Are Emoticons And Emojis Destroying Our Language? If you are on the far side of 70, as I am, you may not even know what emoticons and Emojis are, but trust me, your grandchildren do. You don't need to know the other person's foreign language -- or even how to read! But a number of us older folks, including academics, are more than a little worried about what the popularity of communicating with pictographs is doing to our language and literature. Are We In A Surveillance? The first emoticon was created in 1982 by narrative on respect, Scott E. Fahlman, a computer scientist at Carnegie Mellon University. Pretty much no one had a personal computer or access to the Internet except for real essays geeky scientists and scholarly computer experts who communicated with each other on the earliest on-line bulletin boards. At 11:44 a.m. on research companies, Sept. 19, 1982, Fahlman hit three keys on his keyboard: a colon, a hyphen and essay on respect, a parenthesis -- and the emoticon was born -- a sideways happy face.

While the Smiley emoticon is narrative on respect beloved by are we living, texting teenagers, there are many adults out there who become enraged at the sight of that smiling yellow face. I am deeply offended by them. Maria McErlane, a British journalist, actress and radio personality told The New York Times in 2011.

If anybody on Facebook sends me a message with a little smiley-frowny face . I will de-friend them . I find it lazy. Are your words not enough? Despite the dislike of many intellectuals, it seems that nearly everyone who texts uses the Smiley emoticon. Fifty-seven per cent said that they would rather tell a crush their true feelings with emoticons than words. Emojis are the next generation of emoticons -- images that represent emotions and just about everything else, while emoticons are always about emotions and express them with a face. Speculating About Causes? Emojis are not just Smiley faces but also flags of various countries, musical notes, people, an engagement ring, the Statue of Liberty, a camel, a baby bottle, a green dragon, a butcher knife, a cat making the Scream face, even a stack of dollar bills with wings and a pyramid of excrement with eyes and a grin. How to Write an Essay on Respect - …

10 practical tips for narrative essay writing better exam essays. The key words in the title are practical and exam . Last week I ran a “competition” to write an essay on aid and poverty. The essays I received were spectacularly good and I do suggest you check them out in the comments section. My one worry though was were they really practical essays in an exam. My essay, which you will find below, is I think much simpler than almost all the essays I received and writing research, perhaps a more practical model for essay on respect exams. I should add that these are mostly band score 8.0 writing tips and are written especially for candidates who are aiming high. The moral is: 1. Read write read write read write read write read write read.

What does this mean? It means that you should go back and read the paragraph you have just written before you start the next one. You may think that this is a waste of time. If so, you’d be wrong. It’s important to link your paragraphs together what more practical way to do that than just read what you have written? It helps you with words for on cyrano de bergerac the next paragraph it is good to repeat some words as this improves your coherence.

Look at my sample essay to see how I repeat/reflect language. In one paragraph I talk about the short term, this makes it easy to move onto the long term in the next paragraph. You may also want to check out my series of lessons on the process of writing IELTS essays where you will find a much more detailed explanation of this, 2. Don’t be smart, be clear select your best idea. One of my very first posts/articles on this site was headed “IELTS is not a test of intelligence”. While the post itself now looks a little old, the advice is still good. You are being tested on the quality of your English, not on the quality of your ideas. This advice is particularly important for candidates who come from an academic background where they are used to being graded on quality and quantity of narrative ideas. IELTS is different: it is quite possible to write a band 9.0 essay and not include some key #8220;academic#8221; ideas, let alone all the ideas. The practical advice here is to select your best idea and write about writing research paper in mla, that. That means not writing everything you know leave some ideas out . Don’t worry if it is not your best explanation, worry about whether it is narrative essay on respect, your clearest explanation. 3. Write about what you know relax about ideas.

This is a similar idea. IELTS is an essays on cyrano de bergerac, international exam (that’s the on respect “I” in academic companies IELTS) and narrative on respect, the questions are written to be answered by anyone around the essays on cyrano de bergerac world. Some people stress about finding ideas. They shouldn’t. The ideas you need are generally simple (eg”I disagree”, “This is not a good idea”). The practical solution is to think about essay, what YOU know and what YOUR experience is. If you look at the question, this is are we, what it tells you to do. If you come from Bonn, write about narrative essay, Bonn; if you come from are we surveillance society, Ulan Bator, write about Ulan Bator!

4. Examples are easier to write than explanations. In an exam you are under pressure. You want to make things as easy for yourself as possible. One practical idea to achieve this is to focus as much on narrative essay examples as explanations when you write. Why? It’s simply harder if you only think “because”. Some of the ideas may be very complex and, under pressure, it can be difficult to explain these with reasons. What may happen is that your sentences become too long and the ideas confused. In A Society? The practical bit is to concentrate as much on examples. This is a good idea as examples tend to essay on respect, be easier to write as you are simply describing situations. You should also note that the instructions tell you to use examples!

All you need to do is make sure that your examples are relevant to the main idea. 5. Don’t write too much the examiner is speculating causes, paid by the minute. There is no upper word limit I know of, but it really isn’t a good idea to write 350 words or more. Here’s why: Examiners will only spend so much time looking at any essay. Narrative On Respect? Write too much and they will read what you wrote “less carefully”. It is easier to read/grade a 300 word essay than a 400 word essay! The more you write, the more likely you are to make language mistakes. On Cyrano De Bergerac? The more you write, the more likely you are to on respect, go off topic. The examiner won’t read/grade anything that doesn’t directly relate to the question. If you write less, you give yourself more time to essays, choose the best words and that’s what you are being graded on.

If you write less, you give yourself more time to on respect, go back and check what you have written. One of the real essays most famous philosophical thoughts is “know yourself”. How does this apply to narrative essay on respect, exam writing? Did Plato really have IELTS in powerpoint services mind when he wrote his dialogues? Well, no, but#8230; The idea is that you should check for your mistakes when you write. The practical part here is that you shouldn’t check for mistakes generally that’s too hard and narrative, probably a waste of time in the exam. What isn’t a waste of time though is to look for academic research companies mistakes you know you can correct the ones you normally make! The really practical thing is to have your own checklist in essay on respect your head before you start writing. 7. See the whole essay in your head before you start writing.

It’s very important that your essay is a whole that all the bits fit together. If you don’t do that, you may lose significant marks for about essays both coherence and task response. This means planning of on respect course. Planning bothers some people and bores others. Are We Living In A Surveillance Society Essay? There are different ways to do this, but at the very least have a map of your essay in your head. Narrative Essay? 8. Focus on the backbone of your essay. This is a related point. All the essay matters of course, but perhaps some bits matter more than others. I’d suggest the practical thing to do is concentrate on the backbone of your essay, the bits that help you write better and the examiner to essays on cyrano, understand better. The backbone is: The introduction : this should identify the question and outline your position.

Don’t rush it as it is the first thing the narrative examiner will read. First impressions count. The first/topic sentences of each paragraph : these should be clear and to the point. They should identify exactly what that paragraph is about and show how it relates to the rest of the essay. The practical tip is to keep the professional powerpoint services detail/clever ideas for the body of the paragraph. Narrative On Respect? Start off general and then build towards the specific. The conclusion : this is the easiest part of the essay normally. Most often, all you need to do is go back to the introduction and rephrase it. Academic Research Writing Companies? Get these bits right and narrative, the rest of the essay tends to take care of itself. 9. Don’t just practice whole essays. The best way to learn to academic research writing, write essays is to essay, write essays?

True or false? My answer is a bit of both. Yes, you do need to practise writing complete essays, but it may be a mistake to do only that. The different part of real essays require slightly different skills. Essay? To write an on cyrano, introduction, you need to be able to paraphrase the question. Essay On Respect? To write a body paragraph, you need to be able to explain ideas. To write a conclusion, you need to be able summarise.

The practical suggestion is to practise writing introductions, body paragraphs and conclusions separately. Focus on in a skills. 10. Focus on the question and refocus on the question. I have left this one to last as it is for me the most important idea.

Essays go wrong for different reasons. Some of on respect these you may not be able to avoid: the about causes essays quality of your English may not be good enough yet. Narrative? The one mistake you can always avoid is that you didn’t answer the question. Too many essays go wrong because candidates didn’t read and think about the question properly. The practical suggestion: before you write each paragraph, refer back to the question to remind yourself about what you are meant to write about. It is academic research writing companies, very easy to get carried away in exams. You may start off on topic, then you have a “good idea” as you write. So you write about that.

Sadly, that “good idea” may not fully relate to the question. Big problem. My sample essay on poverty and on respect, aid. This essay which you can download below is intended to be an example of the ideas in this post. It is fairly simple in structure.

It focuses clearly on the question I left many of my best ideas out. I concentrated on what I could explain clearly. Real Student Essays? It comes in at only just over 300 words. This is where I catalogue all my writing materials. If you are looking for narrative essay on respect more specific advice, this is the place to start. Being famous has a significant number of positive points which will be discussed in more details. Celebrities receive huge amounts of money, so they can buy luxurious cars, devices and gadgets. As a result, superstars always should hide themselves from the eyes of journalists who want to intrude their privacy. Essays On Cyrano? Hi Dominic plz tell me whats is the level of this essay.Kindly suggest me corrections. The rising trend of an increasing number of women turning as major bread earners of the family is pervasive these days. This essay will first accentuate that women empowerment is the essay on respect major cause of this shift and then it will highlight its effect of abstained family and societal duties. Are We Surveillance Society Essay? Firstly, the most significant reason behind the women contributing to the proportionate amount of family earnings is, the orientation of the society towards revolutionary women empowerment . The Long felt need for the contribution of women to the economic and societal decisions was propelled by their inner thrust of self accomplishment . Hence, they broke the shackles of household chores and moved out of the houses to earn money and equal status as that of men.

Moreover, this movement was further supported by narrative, the governments of various countries. For instance, reservations were made for women to living surveillance, occupy significant positions in public enterprises, services and other institutions. On the other hand, this positive development in the society has resulted into more number of impoverished families.Women being considered the heart and soul of the families are more proficient in accomplishing family affairs than their male counterparts. However, more and more number of narrative on respect women moving out of the families for professional work has affected the essay family and societal bondings negatively to a considerable level. It is evident from the fact that younger generations are now more interested in hangout with friends than attending family and speculating causes, social rituals. In conclusion, while women are giving remarkable economic contribution to narrative essay on respect, their families resulting in better living standards nonethless, this has led to an anomaly of a weak society. This aberration however can be overcome through collective effort of the family members in sharing role and responsibilities, thus framing better work -life balance. I#8217;m sorry but I really don#8217;t have time to paper in mla, give individual feedback of this sort.

Click on the highlighted text for comments about academic writing conventions; click on the notes in professional powerpoint services the margin for commentary on narrative on respect the essay. Birth rates are falling in developed countries. There is one simple reason for this - young people nowadays are just too selfish and too self-centred to have children. And this is particularly true of writing companies women. To what extent do you agree with this view? Support your argument with relevant readings and evidence.

Countries in the developed world have seen a big shift in attitudes to narrative, population growth. Several generations ago, it was generally believed that too many babies were being born, and that societies should try to reduce their populations. Nowadays, however, the paper in mla, concern is the reverse - that birthrates are falling too low and that urgent action is needed to encourage people to have more children. But what are the causes of this trend? And how much are the attitudes and lifestyles of young people to blame? This essay will consider a number of explanations for the so-called baby crash. My argument will be that to hold young people responsible is essay on respect neither valid nor helpful.

The best explanation, I believe , is to be found in writing in mla format the condition of increased economic insecurity faced by the young. The birth rate has fallen dramatically in many parts of the world. To take several examples, in Europe in 1960, the total fertility rate (TFR) was about 2.6 births per female, but in 1996 it had fallen to 1.4 (Chesnais, 1998) . Narrative Essay. In many Asian countries, similar declines have been experienced. Japan now has a birthrate of only real student, about 1.3, and Hong Kong#039;s has fallen to below 1.0 (Ichimura and Ogawa, 2000) . A TFR of below 2.0 means that a country#039;s population is not replaced, and narrative essay on respect thus there is a net population decline. This ageing of the population has the speculating causes essays, potential to create serious problems. Fewer children being born means that in on respect the long term, a smaller proportion of the populace will be economically productive, whilst a larger proportion will be old and economically dependent - in the form of pension, health care and other social services. Most experts agree that these greying societies will not be able escape serious social and economic decline in the future (Chesnais, 1998). So what are the causes of this trend and what can be done to stop it? One common approach has been to lay the blame on academic research companies young people and essay their supposedly self-centred values.

It is argued that in developed societies, we now live in a post-materialist age, where individuals do not have to essays de bergerac, be so concerned about on respect, basic material conditions to survive (McDonald, 2000a). Thus people, especially the young, have become more focussed on the values of self-realisation and the satisfaction of personal preferences, at the expense of traditional values like raising a family. Essays On Cyrano De Bergerac. A strong version of essay this view is put forward by Japanese sociologist, Masahiro Yamada (cited in Ashby, 2000) . He uses the term parasite singles to refer to grown children in their 20s and 30s who have left school and are employed, but remain unmarried and continue live at professional, home with their parents. These young people are spoilt, he says, and interested only in their own pleasure - mainly in the form of shopping. According to Yamada , it is this focus on essay self, more than any other factor, that is responsible for Japan#039;s languishing birth rate (Ashby, 2000). Professional Services. In other developed countries, there is a similar tendency for the young to remain at home enjoying a single lifestyle - and a similar tendency for older people to essay, interpret this as selfishness (McDonald, 2000a). But is it reasonable to writing in mla, attribute the baby crash to the pleasure-seeking values of the young? The problem with this view is that whenever young people are surveyed about their attitudes to family, not only do they say they want to narrative essay, have children, they also express preferences for family sizes that are, on average, above the replacement level (McDonald, 2000a). As an example, McDonald quotes an Australian study that found that women aged 20-24 expected to have an average of 2.33 children in their lifetime.

Findings like this suggest that the values of the young are not at all incompatible with the idea of having a family. It seems then that, as young people progress through their twenties and essays thirties, they encounter obstacles along the way that prevent them from fulfilling their plans to be parents. Some conservative thinkers believe the main obstacle is the changed role and status of women (eg. Norton, 2003). According to this view, because young women now have greater educational and career opportunities than in previous generations, they are finding the idea of family and motherhood less attractive. Thus, educated middle class women are delaying marriage and childbirth or even rejecting motherhood altogether. It is claimed that women#039;s improved status - which may be a good thing in itself - has had the unfortunate consequence of threatening population stability.

But there are several problems with this argument. For one, the lowest TFRs in Europe are found in Spain and Italy (around 1.2), both more traditional, male-oriented societies, which offer fewer opportunities to essay on respect, women. Research Writing Companies. In comparison, Sweden which has been a leading country in advancing the rights of women enjoys a higher TFR (1.6 in 1996) - even though it is still below replacement. Chesnais (1998: p. 99) refers to this contrast as the feminist paradox and essay concludes that empowerment of women [actually] ensures against a very low birth rate (my emphasis) . Another problem with trying to link improved education levels for women to low birth rates is that fertility in developed countries seems to be declining across all education and class levels. In a recent survey of Australian census data, Birrell (2003) found that, whereas the non-tertiary-educated group was once very fertile, its rate of professional services partnering is now converging towards that of on respect tertiary educated women. We can summarise the discussion to this point as follows: Young people today, in spite of what#039;s said about their values, still express a desire to have children. Essays De Bergerac. However, few end up having as many as they say they would like. The improved education and narrative essay on respect career opportunities for women does not seem to are we in a, be the narrative essay on respect, decisive factor in reducing the number of real student essays children that a woman has. These conclusions suggest that there must be something else involved.

Many writers are now pointing to a different factor - the economic condition of young people and their growing sense of insecurity. Peter McDonald (2000a) in his article #039;Low fertility in narrative Australia: Evidence, causes and policy responses#039; discusses some of the things that a couple will consider when they are thinking of research in mla having a child. One type of thinking is what McDonald calls Rational Choice Theory, whereby a couple make an assessment of the relative costs and benefits associated with becoming a parent. On Respect. In traditional societies, there has usually been an on cyrano, economic benefit in having children because they can be a source of labour to help the essay, family. In developed societies, however, children now constitute an economic cost, and so, it is speculating about causes argued, the benefits are more of a psychological kind - for example, enjoying the status of being a parent, having baby who will be fun and will grow up to love you, having offspring who will carry on the family name etc. On Respect. The problem, McDonald suggests, is that for many couples nowadays the economic cost can easily outweigh any perceived psychological benefits.

McDonald (2000b) discusses another type of decision-making - Risk Aversion Theory - which he says is also unfavourable to the birth rate. According to writing companies, this theory, when we make important decisions in our lives life, if we perceive uncertainty in our environment, we usually err on the side of safety in order to avert risk. McDonald points to a rise in economic uncertainty which he thinks has steered a lot of narrative essay young people away from life-changing decisions like marriage and parenthood: Jobs are no longer lifetime jobs. There is a strong economic cycle of booms and busts.

Geographic mobility may be required for real student essays, employment purposes (McDonald, 2000: p.15). Birrell (2003) focuses on increased economic uncertainty for men. Referring to the situation in Australia, he discusses men#039;s reluctance to form families in terms of perceived costs and risks: Many men are poor - in 2001, 42 per cent of men aged 25-44 earnt less than $32,000 a year. Only two-thirds of men in this age group were in full-time work. Young men considering marriage could hardly be unaware of the risks of marital breakdown or the long-term costs, especially when children are involved (Birrell, 2003: p.12). And Yuji Genda (2000) in Japan, responding to Yamada#039;s analysis of parasite singles, argues that the failure of young Japanese to leave home and start families is not due to narrative on respect, self-indulgence, but is an understandable response to increasingly difficult economic circumstances. Real. Genda (2000) notes that it is the young who have had to bear the brunt of the decade long restructuring of the Japanese economy, with youth unemployment hovering around 10% and a marked reduction in narrative secure full-time jobs for the young. Young people around the world seem to have an de bergerac, increasing perception of economic uncertainty and contemplate something their parents would have found impossible - a decline in living standards over their lifetime.

According to a 1990 American survey, two thirds of respondents in the 18-29 age group thought it would be more difficult for their generation to live as comfortably as previous generations (cited in Newman, 2000: p.505). Furthermore, around 70% believed they would have difficulty purchasing a house, and around 50% were worried about their future. Findings like these suggest that the younger generation may be reluctant to on respect, have children, not because they have more exciting things to research paper, do, but because they have doubts about their capacity to narrative essay, provide as parents.
