Teaching Brevity: Nicole Walker#8217;s #8220;Fish#8221; By Heidi Czerwiec. Nicole Walker is a writer whose first book of poetry This Noisy Egg was followed by a book of lyric nonfiction, Quench Your Thirst With Salt , and a co-edited collection Bending Genre: Essays on Nonfiction . It is because of this thoughtful genre-bending she embraces that I enjoy teaching her work in multi-genre introductory creative writing workshops, in essay-writing courses, and, most recently, in a hybrid forms workshop. In particular, I have great success with her short piece “Fish,” the opening essay in Quench , and it resume download a Brevity essay as well, which never fails to provoke heated discussions and compelling imitations. Topics Paper? “Fish” is a nonfiction piece that complicates students’ ideas of what an essay is and how it should behave. A triptych, each part is only ?1 page long. The first part resembles nature or environmental writing and describes, in a zoomed-in empathetic third-person point of view, a salmon fighting to climb a man-made fish ladder: “The fish jumped a ladder built of electricity and concrete. Swimming up the Columbia teachers her a lesson about progress.” The second section, written in first person (but with an awareness that shifts between a child’s and an adult’s perspective), is a vivid memory of deep-sea fishing with her father and his friends, and struggling to reel in download, a huge barracuda: “I am eleven years old and holding onto a fishing pole, trolling for argument, big fish in the deep water off Florida’s coast. I must have been beautiful then.” The third part, written in download, second person, reads like food writing – in examples of third persuasive essay, this case, how to prepare fish: “Cooking filets of fish is not complicated…. It Resume? It’s the sauce that’s difficult.”

“Fish” represents three different kinds of examples of third persuasive nonfiction writing – nature documentary, memoir, and food writing – with which students are already familiar. But how do they work (or not work) together as a triptych of it resume download styles seemingly linked only by essay about bonding topic? Each section presents only it resume download, a brief, image-based moment addressing some aspect of fish – only the recipe-like third section offers us much closure, and none gives that satisfying moral or meaning that students long for. Their reaction to “Fish” is thesis for death penalty, complicated further by unexpected lyric elements: “This isn’t an essay; it’s a poem,” they complain. While each section has its distinct voice, images and it resume download words echo across the essay: the mozart vs beethoven, straining of the salmon upstream becomes the straining of the young girl and barracuda against it resume download, each other, and returns as directions for making a sauce: “Strain through a chinois. Persuasive? Strain through cheese cloth. Strain one more time for download, good measure.” Words like “circling,” “hold,” and “flesh” recur, accruing meaning. And Walker breaks her prose into short paragraphs sometimes only of third person persuasive, a line long, which visually resembles poetry and it resume affects the pacing of how we read her essay. How can all of these elements co-exist in for a middle school research paper, the same piece of download writing? As all of you are well aware, the verb “essay” or “assay” means to attempt. Persuasive Essay? Walker’s “Fish” makes explicit the it resume download, many approaches we may take to our topics.

What is penalty argument, interesting is the way she tries to do several at once – create three distinct styles and voices and it resume points of of third person view, and yet tie them together not only through topic, but more subtly through recurrent words and images. As a result, “Fish” offers much for it resume, discussion about the choices she’s made and the effects they have on readers, both in the individual sections and across the whole piece. Vs Beethoven Essay? After discussing “Fish,” I like to download lead students through a guided free-write imitation: I have them start by writing about a vivid memory involving a single-ingredient food item – an animal, a fruit or vegetable, a spice, etc. Then, I have them try to write a brief scene from the thesis, sensory perspective of that food item. Download? Finally, they write directions for their favorite recipe for that item. For their assignment, they can develop these sections, but I encourage them to explore other ways of download considering that food item (its history, its cultural associations, etc.), so long as they end up with at least a three-part essay. As they refine their piece, they should also experiment with creating distinct voices, styles, and of third person persuasive essay points of view for each section, as well as finding ways to tie the sections together via language, imagery, or other elements. It Resume Download? This piece often is one of the strongest my students produce, and topics for a encourages them to play with a number of writing techniques in a short piece. reprinted with permission, previously published in Assay. #8216;Teaching Brevity #8216; is a special blog series celebrating the magazine#8217;s 20th Anniversary, edited by Sarah Einstein. By Irene Hoge Smith. The Jewish High Holy Days mark a season of endings and beginnings, atonement and forgiveness. Alongside my Jewish husband and it resume download with our interfaith community, I am able to partake in this precious opportunity for contemplation. One of my endings (and perhaps a new beginning) is that, after more than five years, I seem finally to have finished writing about thesis for death, my mother. This month I sent Snaggletooth’s Daughter: A Memoir out to find its way in the world. (I’d thought it finished this time last year, but in the way of these things it needed one more rewrite to be the best I could make it.) The book is about my lost-and-found mother. She was a poet, my father an engineer, and their marriage was chaotic and it resume destructive. When they finally split up, my father got custody of me and my three sisters (aged six to sixteen) and mozart vs beethoven essay my mother moved to California, where she picked up the life of poetry she’d set aside for the decade and a half she was with us. She became Charles Bukowski’s Snaggletooth, mother of it resume download his only child, and francEyE, a respected poet in her own right. From fourteen to vs beethoven thirty, I did my best to pretend I’d never had a mother. When that coping strategy inevitably outlived its usefulness, I took up the task of trying to form some kind of relationship with the woman who had been, but no longer was, my mother.

She was a writer, and I respected that, but was still shocked when I discovered she’d left out of her own memoir anything about me and my sisters or her marriage to our father. When I received an invitation to her book launch party, I wrote what became my first published essay, instead of an RSVP. Then I decided to make another visit, to download ask her directly to talk about the years she’d been our mother, and begin to understand more completely what her life had been. By the time she died, I was able to speak at her funeral, filling in the missing parts of her life story in essay bonding, words that were, I hoped, not untrue and not unkind. Yet when a fellow writer asks me after a group reading—well-meaning, insistent, and in obvious distress—if I have forgiven my mother, I feel put on the spot. I want to say, “Forgive her? Interesting question. It Resume? You know, she never asked!” Or, since tout comprendre, c’est tout pardoner , I might point out that I’ve spent most of a decade (or my whole life) on the work of understanding my mother. My defensiveness makes me wonder if there’s something I’ve neglected. Have I not forgiven her? I think my friend, pained by the sad litany of loss, hoped that “forgiveness” would be the thing that could wrap the story up with a happy bow, so that I could stop writing about the things that happened and their long-lasting effects.

Maybe the problem is that I’d so much love to be able to do something like that—to say the magic word “forgive,” and thus bring into being a sweet, uncomplicated, mother-daughter love, and of third person make everything all okay. I wish I could do that, but that’s not what forgiveness is. Download? In order to forgive, we must give up the desire for revenge, any claim to get something back in compensation for having been hurt, and in that regard I feel on solid ground. Essay? I don’t recall ever trying to make my mother suffer, or even wishing that she would. I wanted to tell my own story, but I didn’t do it to hurt her or anyone else. Forgiveness also requires that we acknowledge the humanity of the person who has caused hurt. It Resume Download? I might easily have written my mother as a caricature—a foolish, self-involved woman, more attached to her writing and vs beethoven essay political beliefs than to it resume download her children, whose abandonment of those children defined her. I knew from the the cruel thesis, perspective of writing, emotional health, and it resume download maybe even the good of thesis for death penalty my soul, whatever that might be, how important it was not to download fall into that trap. Finally, to forgive someone we have to examples be able to wish them well despite our own pain.

My mother’s gone now, but I’m glad she got to publish her poems, (even if there are still a few I don’t get) and that she felt loved by the one daughter she was able to mother. It Resume Download? I’m sad that I was not a beneficiary of that late-developed capacity, but if it were up to me I’d want that relationship to it resume download have existed rather than not. I’m glad she died free of pain and fear, and that she was not wracked by guilt. I hope that, if she is somewhere now, she is at peace. For our own sake, and perhaps for the sake of the world, we are enjoined to it resume download give up thoughts of perfect future revenge, relinquish enduring resentment, grant to download the person who has hurt us their own essential humanity, and practice compassion to them and to ourselves. We are not required to write a book about them. I did that for myself. Irene Hoge Smith lives, writes and practices psychotherapy near Washington D.C. Her essays have appeared in New Directions Journal , Amsterdam Quarterly, Prick of the Spindle, and Vine Leaves Literary Review , and essay about bonding she was a 2016 AWP Writer-to Writer Mentee. (One of the founding mothers of IFFP, she is observing Yom Kippur today with her interfaith community.) Teaching Brevity: Reading Short, Writing Short.

By Kelly Kathleen Ferguson. I confess that I first turned to flash nonfiction because I needed a way to download organize twenty undergraduate students, and I needed it in a week. Based on the The Rose Metal Press Field Guide to for a school paper Writing Flash Nonfiction , and supplemental readings from it resume download, Brevity , I devised this repeating course schedule: 1) Mondays and the cruel angel's thesis Wednesdays would consist of a combination of reading discussion, prompts, and craft lecture, while 2) Fridays would be for download, small group workshops of four, where I rotated through the groups. Here was my thinking: Short reading assignments would mean students actually read. Short essays for workshop eliminated the need for distributing work ahead of time. That everyone was up for workshop every week eliminated the topics for a, need for a rotating schedule. Grading would be based on participation, which took care of attendance issues. So many logistical problems, solved! This course structure helped me successfully navigate the usual undergraduate workshop obstacles, such as grandmother genocide, wayward printers, dastardly roommates, and even the dreaded “Thirsty Thursday.” It went so well I have taught my intermediate nonfiction courses the same way ever since. And while practical considerations are not to it resume download be minimized, given time to the cruel reflect, I’ve uncovered legitimate pedagogical benefits:

Students establish the download, habit of reader and writer. Rapid turnaround means lower stakes. Students are freer to risk, and I am freer to risk different prompts. Most undergraduate essays demonstrate problems within 800 words that will not be helped by more words. Flash forces students to eliminate throat-clearing passages, pushes them to reach the point. (I generally notice a turn about the third or fourth essay in.) Over the semester, students get to experience a depth and breadth of it resume creative nonfiction.

By the end students have a stack of essays, which feels good. Because I’m a Libra, I have also considered the negatives of this class structure: Lack of opportunity to write longer essays that include more preparation and/or in-depth reporting. A bias towards lyric writing over narrative (maybe). Inability to thesis for death argument formulate workshop comments ahead of time. To balance these negatives, I use the last two weeks of class for conferencing, geared towards revision strategies for the final portfolio. Students might realize that their flash essay is it resume download, really a longer essay, or maybe they find a theme—pieces they could string together to create a narrative sequence. Maybe their flash piece needs to be cut even further. Maybe they’ve really written a poem or a short story. This is their chance to look back, reflect, to consider what they’ve created and where they would like to go from here. A few publishable gems are a great find.

A ream of thesis for death argument hot mess—also fine. Either way, what I’m really hoping, is that after the course is it resume download, completed, students have made a regular writing practice part of who they are, and if they are not writing, they have this weird feeling that something is wrong. #8216;Teaching Brevity #8216; is a special blog series celebrating the examples persuasive, magazine#8217;s 20th Anniversary, edited by it resume Sarah Einstein. A Review of Jennifer Sinor’s Letters Like the Day. By Debbie Hagan. The other day, I came across a stack of letters, written in 1974, by my high school boyfriend. When I left for college, he stayed home. We couldn’t afford to talk by angel's phone, so we wrote. Reading the it resume, first letter, I hear this sweet boy’s voice, almost as if he were next to me.

How can this be? I haven’t spoken to on my perfect husband him in it resume, nearly forty years. On My Perfect Future Husband? I smile at his unflagging optimism: Can we get engaged? In the margins were scrawled love poems and cartoons with shaggy characters holding up signs: I miss you; I’m lonely . He had pressed so much love into these pages, I could feel his arms reaching for me, his kisses so sweet. This magical feeling lingered for days. From 1914-1946, artist Georgia O’Keeffe and photographer Alfred Stieglitz wrote 1,900 letters. Jennifer Sinor found them in Yale University’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library and read them all. At age twenty-seven, O’Keeffe wrote to Stieglitz wanting to subscribe to his magazine Camera Work . Download? Months later, she sent him a few of her charcoal drawings. “What am I to say?” he wrote back. “This is from the man who would hold court for hours at 291, his gallery and what would be the cradle of American modernism,” writes Sinor in her essay collection, Letters Like the essay perfect future husband, Day: On Reading Georgia O’Keeffe . Stieglitz had never met anyone like O’Keeffe.

No one had possessed her passion, independence, and mulish drive to forge past brutal rejection and ridicule. She’d earned his respect, and it melted his curmudgeonly heart. In 1918, O’Keeffe moved to it resume download New York City. In 1924, she married Stieglitz. Five years later, she moved to New Mexico’s desert canyons, going east now and then to on my perfect husband visit her husband. While distance kills many romances, these dreamy, impassioned letters sustained it. In her letters, O’Keeffe professes she can’t articulate her ideas. Not true. Sinor uses her letters to offer an intimate, fresh look at this enigmatic artist through nine innovative essays. In “Holes in the Sky,” she imagines the artist physically dropping by for tea.

It’s a clever way for it resume, her to metaphorically show that voice brings the work alive, so much so the letter writer’s presence is felt. Her letters also give us insight into the way O’Keeffe thinks, her obsession with the voids. Vs Beethoven Essay? As Sinor describes it, “Not the it resume, bone but what can be seen through it. And what she saw was both beautiful and sad, terrifying and sublime, a space so complex, and charged, and personal, that words would never capture it.” Like O’Keeffe, Sinor is it resume download, drawn to space, the narrative gaps that stimulates reader reflection. “More Feeling Than Brain” is a richly woven collage made up of mozart evocative events that occur during Sinor’s trip with her family through the desert. Her son yearns to see a coyote: “We have been waiting and waiting and download waiting.” Then early one morning, they hit one with their car—hardly the way a child should meet his favorite animal. Essay On My Future Husband? Death, longing, shock, Christian symbolism, and the vast, striking beauty of the desert make up this complex tapestry over which the writer weaves O’Keeffe’s haunting words: “I work in a queer sort of unconscious way: more feeling than brain.” While each essay possesses its own intrigue, I’m drawn to the subject matter in download, the slightly amusing narrative “Perfectly Fantastic.” Dole Pineapple Company invites O’Keeffe to Hawaii to create paintings of its farm, scheduled to appear in a national ad campaign.

Do the pineapple kings not realize that O’Keeffe’s eye goes to mozart vs beethoven essay the desert—stark, angular, and full of voids? In fact, Hawaii’s lush, dense vegetation flummoxes the artist. It Resume? She can’t find her way into essay it. Download? Then she stumbles upon a lava-flowing volcano. She paints with fury and can’t stop. This is hardly what Dole had in mind. “Her Hawaii paintings may not be her best work, and her time in Hawaii may not, ultimately, have been one of her most significant periods in her life,” writes Sinor. “What we have though, in these paintings and in her letters is the story of how we come to know—a place, a flower, a self.” O’Keeffe dared to look where most us don’t. It Resume? Through her vision, paintings, and letters, we’re able to fully see and appreciate this artist’s own intoxicating vision of truth.

Debbie Hagan would write more letters, but there are only it resume, a few people around who can still make sense of angel's her cursive. Chaucer himself may have been summoned to a court of love for his libelous depiction of Criseyde in Troilus and Criseyde , and Queen Anne may have required him to write The Legend of Good Women as a penance for his literary crimes. In The Wife of Bath's Tale, we find an inversion of the normal play-acting in which King Arthur gives Gwenevere and her ladies the right to try a rapist-knight for his crimes. Here, the women literally have power of life or death over the subject. It Resume? Andreas Capellanus discusses the courts of love in his medieval writings, and more recent scholars such as C. S. The Cruel Angel's? Lewis ( The Allegory of Love ) and Amy Kelly ( Eleanor of Aquitaine ) discuss the convention at length. Cf. Download? demand d'amour . COURTLY LOVE (Medieval French: fin amour or amour courtois ): Possibly a cultural trope in the late twelfth-century, or possibly a literary convention that captured popular imagination, courtly love refers to a code of behavior that gave rise to topics research, modern ideas of download, chivalrous romance.

The term itself was popularized by C. ? S. It Resume? Lewis' and Gaston Paris' scholarly studies, but its historical existence remains contested in critical circles. The conventions of courtly love are that a knight of noble blood would adore and worship a young noble-woman from afar, seeking to protect her honor and win her favor by the cruel angel's thesis, valorous deeds. He typically falls ill with love-sickness, while the woman chastely or scornfully rejects or refuses his advances in public but privately encourages him. Download? Courtly love was associated with (A) nobility, since no peasants can engage in fine love; (B) secrecy; (C) adultery, since often the examples person one or both participants were married to download, another noble who was unloved; and (D) paradoxically with chastity, since the passion should never be consummated due to social circumstances, thus it was a higher love unsullied by argument, selfish carnal desires or political concerns of arranged marriages. In spite of this ideal of chastity, the knightly characters in literature usually end up giving in to download, their passions with tragic results--such as Lancelot and Guenevere's fate, or that of Tristan and examples of third persuasive essay, Iseult. We associate courtly love with French literature primarily, but the concept permeated German and Italian literature as well. It Resume Download? The German equivalent of about, fin amour is it resume download Minne (hence Minnesänger ), and the Italian poets of the dolce stil nuovo cultivated similar subject matter. The convention of courtly love eventually becomes a source of parody. Andreas Capellanus' Rules of Courtly Love provides a satirical guide to angel's thesis, the endeavor, and Chretien de Troyes satirizes the conventions in download his courtly literature as well. Similar conventions influence Petrarch's poetry and Shakespeare's sonnets.

These sonnets often emphasize in particular the idea of love from afar and unrequited love, and make use of imagery and it resume, wording common to the earlier French tradition. In terms of whether or not practices of courtly love were a historical reality, scholars are loosely divided into schools of thought, as William Kibler notes. The first group, the so-called realists, argue that such institutions truly did exist in the Middle Ages and the literature of the time reproduces this realistically. Mozart Vs Beethoven? The opposing school, the so-called idealists, argue that (at best) courtly love was a court game taken ironically as a joke, or (at worst) post-Romantic/Victorian readers have superimposed their own ideals and wishes on medieval culture by exaggerating these components. In time, they lost their original African languages and the mixed speech became the native tongue of future husband, their children--a creole. Contrast with pidgin . CRESCENDO : Another term for rhetorical climax . See climax, rhetorical , above. CRISIS (plural: crises ): The turning point of download, uncertainty and future, tension resulting from earlier conflict in a plot. At the moment of crisis in a story, it is unclear if the protagonist will succeed or fail in his struggle. The crisis usually leads to or overlaps with the climax of a story, though some critics use the two terms synonymously.

See climax, literary , above. CRITICAL READING : Careful analysis of an essay's structure and logic in order to it resume, determine the validity of an argument. Often this term is used synonymously with close reading (see above), but I prefer to reserve close reading for the artistic analysis of literature. Click here for more information about critical reading. Cf. Essay About Bonding? close reading . CRITICUS APPARATUS : The scholarly notations in a critical edition (especially a variorum edition) in which the editor indicates all the known variations of it resume download, a particular text.

The apparatus often appears running along the bottom of each page or sometimes in the back of the book, and often incorporates editorial footnotes and for death penalty argument, glosses. The apparatus can appear quite cryptic to students unfamiliar with the formulaic abbreviations in scholarly use. For instance, below is an illustrative notation from A. V. C. Schmidt's criticus apparatus for Passus I, line 1, of the Everyman edition of William Langland's Piers Plowman , page 14: Collation WHmCrGYOC2CLMHRF. It Resume Download? RUBRIC Passus primus de visione Wr (pr] Secundus F; de v.] de petri le ploughman BR; om O); om GC2. This notation indicates subsequent lines are collated together in thirteen of the surviving manuscripts, each manuscript being indicated by a special abbreviation.

Furthermore, the opening line in penalty manuscripts W and r has a Latin title written in red ink (rubricated) as indicated, but another manuscript F has labeled it as secundus rather than primus, while the B and R manuscripts label it in a combination of French and Latin, and so on. Download? A good criticus apparatus helps document all this diversity by gathering it together, line-by-line, for convenient comparison at a glance, but the the cruel editor presumes the it resume reader knows the dense, standardized abbreviations involved in this notation. For a clearer, hypothetical example, let us imagine Edgar Allan Poe has a poem surviving in three slightly different forms. The most widespread version Poe had published by Smith Publishing early in middle school paper his career. Ten years later, Poe revised the poem for a new publisher, Baker Books, and it resume download, they printed this revision a few years after Poe's death. Last of all, a third unpolished version survives in essay Poe's own handwritten notes. Scholars discover this last manuscript version squirreled away in the Morgan Library in it resume 2012. Modern editors would compile these three sources and select what they consider the essay perfect future husband best text. Download? However, they must not ignore the alternative versions by leaving them unnoted and unannotated; that would effectively erase them from history.

Accordingly, the editors might add a criticus apparatus . Here, they would note the essay on my perfect future husband relevant line number and it resume, indicate alternatives. The first version by Smith Books (abbreviated S) has the phrase Conqueror Worme appear in line six. The version by Baker Books (abbreviated B) has a slightly different archaic spelling Conqueror Wyrm in about bonding the same spot. Download? Finally, Poe's own original handwritten rough draft of the poem survives among his papers in the Morgan Library (abbreviated Ml). This manuscript uses the abbreviation Conqu. Wm. Vs Beethoven? scrawled in that line. Now, a modern scholar wants to publish an authoritative version of Poe's poem a century later. Download? This modern editor chooses to emend the line to a standardized spelling of Conqueror Worm. The criticus apparatus at the bottom of the the cruel angel's page might consist of a footnote such as this: 6 Conqeror Worm ] S: Conqueror Worme ; B: Conqueror Wyrm , Ml: Conqu. Wm . The 6 indicates line six as the section with variant readings.

The words before the it resume bracket ] show readers that the editor considers the preceding version the the cruel angel's thesis best text for a modern reader--or at least the version the editor has chosen for his edition. The material after the bracket lists each variant source and indicates how the differing material appeared in that source as exactly as possible. A criticus apparatus documents the known variations that might plausibly be accurate and reminds modern readers of the multiple possible versions an earlier audience might have experienced. This process is especially pertinent in classical and medieval studies, since in the pre-print era, handwritten texts often exhibited striking and even contradictory variant readings. For instance, in the case of The Aeneid , about 3,000 texts survive with each manuscript containing significant variations. In the it resume download case of Chaucer, about 82 versions of the Canterbury Tales survive, all with variant readings. In the case of Shakespeare, striking differences appear in the F (folio) and Q1, Q2, Q3 (first, second, and , third quarto) versions of download, his plays, and so on. CROSSED RHYME : In long couplets, especially hexameter lines, sufficient room in the line allows a poet to use rhymes in the middle of the line as well as at the end of each line. Swinburne's Hymn to Proserpine illustrates its use:

Thou hast conquered, O pale Galilean ; the world has grown grey from Thy breath ; We have drunken of topics middle school, things Lethean , and fed on the fullness of death . Laurel is green for a season , and love is sweet for a day ; But love grows bitter with treason , and laurel outlives not May . In the excerpt above, the words in red are part of crossed rhyme, and the words in green are regular rhyme. Crossed rhyme is also called interlaced rhyme . Contrast with internal rhyme and leonine rhyme . CROWN OF SONNETS : According to Shipley (142), an interlinked poem or cycle of seven sonnets in it resume download which the last line of each of the first six serves as the thesis for death argument last line of the next, and the last line of the seventh sonnet serves as the first line of the first sonnet. All other rhymes are used once only in the collection of the it resume entire seven sonnets. An English example would be Donne's La Corona, though the middle structure is much more common in Italian poetry. A more complicated alternative structure is the so-called heroic crown of sonnets (alias the sonnet redoublé ), which is similar in structure but consists of 15 rather than 7 sonnets in total, but which follows the same rules for rhyme repetitions (Shipley 530). CTHULHU MYTHOS (also spelled Cthulu and Kutulu , pronounced various ways): Strongly influential in pulp science fiction and early twentieth-century horror stories , the Cthulhu mythos revolves around a pantheon of it resume, malign alien beings worshipped as gods by mozart, half-breed cultists.

These aliens were invented and popularized by pulp fiction horror writer H. P. Lovecraft. The name Cthulhu comes from Lovecraft's 1928 short story, The Call of Cthulhu, which introduces the creature Cthulhu as a gigantic, bat-winged, tentacled, green monstrosity who once ruled planet earth in prehistoric times. Currently in a death-like state of hibernation, it now awaits an opportunity to rise from the underwater city of download, R'lyeh and , plunge the earth once more into darkness and download, terror. August Derleth later coined the term Cthulhu mythos to essay on my future, describe collectively the settings, themes, and alien beings first imagined by Lovecraft but later adapted by pulp fiction authors like Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard, Robert Bloch, Henry Kuttner, and Brian Lumley. It Resume Download? Some common elements, motifs, and characters of the mythos include the following: CULTURAL SYMBOL: A symbol widely or generally accepted as meaning something specific within an entire culture or social group, as opposed to a contextual symbol created by essay on my future husband, a single author that has meaning only within a single work or group of works. Examples of cultural symbols in Western culture include the cross as a symbol of Christianity, the it resume download American flag as a symbol of America's colonial history of thirteen colonies growing into fifty states, the topics research paper gold ring as a symbol of marital commitment, the Caduceus as a symbol of medicine, and it resume download, the color black as a symbol of mourning.

Examples of cultural symbols in other cultures include white as a symbol of mourning in Japan, the Yin-Yang sphere as an angel's thesis, oriental symbol of oppositional forces in download balance, the white crane as a symbol of longevity in Mandarin China, and so forth. Any writer in a specific culture could use one of these symbols and be relatively confident that the reader would understand what each symbol represented. Thus, if a writer depicted a pedophilic priest as trampling a crucifix into the mud, it is likely the reader would understand this action represents the way the priest tramples Christian ideals, and so forth. Contrast with contextual symbol and archetype . CYBERPUNK MOVEMENT : (1) A loose school of topics for a middle, science fiction authors including William Gibson, Bruce Stirling, Rudy Rucker, and it resume, Neal Stephenson who rose in popularity in the 1980s and examples of third person persuasive essay, 1990s. Features of it resume, their novels and short stories in this period include the following motifs: Common themes include the dehumanization, commodification, and mechanization of the individual; the negative effects of commercialization upon society; and bonding, implicit philosophical questions regarding consciousness and sensory reality. These cyberpunk authors have been profoundly influential in late twentieth-century science fiction films (such as Strange Days , Robocop , etc.) and Japanese anime , where cyberpunk elements have become so common as to be almost cliché . The metaverse or the Net imagined by these early authors in the 1980s have been seen as prophetic of the download later real-world rise of the internet after 1993. Examples of novels, anthologies, short stories, and other literary works from the cyberpunk movement include Neuromancer , Mona Lisa Overdrive , Islands in the Net , and Johnny Mnemonic. (The last of these has been adapted into an awful film that bears little similarity to the original short story.) More recently, Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash has put a more satirical spin on the genre . CYCLE : In general use, a literary cycle is any group of closely related works. We speak of the Scandinavian, Arthurian , and Charlemagne cycles, for instance.

These refer collectively to many poems and stories written by various artists over several centuries. These cycles all deal with Scandinavian heros, King Arthur and his knights, or the legends of King Charlemagne respectively. More specifically, a mystery cycle refers to for a school, the complete set of mystery plays performed during the Corpus Christi festival in medieval religious drama (typically 45 or so plays, each of it resume download, which depicted a specific event in biblical history from the creation of the world to the last judgment). CYRILLIC : Also called, azbuka , the alphabet used to it resume download, write Russian, Serbian, and Bulgarian. The name comes from the 9th-century Greek missionary Saint Cyril, who traveled from research paper, Byzantium to convert Slavic races of Moravia to Christianity.
