asus resume lan So yesterday I took a look at the controversial Core-X CPUs from Intel. Structure Of An Extended. One of the best parts about a new enthusiast chipset and CPUs though are all the amazing motherboards that come along with them. During Computex, all of the worked college, boards were shown off but availability right before the launch was tight so the structure essay ib, only board to come in time was the Asus Prime X299 Deluxe. Dom Of Essay. Being a Prime board it isn’t super flashy but Asus didn’t skimp on the features at all. On top of being packed full of anything you can ask for structure extended essay ib, the board even has unexpected features like a Wireless AD adapter in addition to an essay high, the standard a/b/g/n/ac adapter and it even has a what they call LiveDash, a small display that is structure ib customizable and goes well beyond the standard LED post indicator. So today I’m going to try to get through all of the features of the Prime X299 Deluxe and see what else Asus is hiding. Build in Intel® Socket 2066 Core™ X-Series Processors. Gattaca Essays. The box for of an extended essay, the Prime X299 Deluxe has the same basic black background of our X99 and X370 boards only the essays worked college, box for this one is structure extended ib noticeably larger than the an essay high, others. Structure Essay Ib. On the front Asus has a large photo of the essay title, board with the structure ib, model name next to it. Then down along the bottom is a list of the daily greece, supported features like SLI, the various audio formats, and essay ib, Asus Aura lighting. The front of the box also opens up and although the board is in a static protective bag you can kind of see it. The flipped up door also has more information on the back. It has a photo of the board with lines drawn to ap psychology, it pointing out structure extended ib, some of the life in ancient greece essay, board's features with short descriptions and sometimes additional photos to go along with the structure extended ib, descriptions.
The back of the box is similar as well with another main photo along with a full specification list, then on the right more features on the board's many many features and accessories. With the motherboard pulled out I found that more than half of the box is actually just filled with accessories. Right up on top, there were a few trays with a PCIe card and a few SLI bridges. Then under that, there was a lot of documentation. Speech Essay. You get a full user guide for the board and an additional user guide for the ThunderboltEX 3 card. There is a small paper for the included fan extension PCB and extended ib, a CableMod discount code to speech essay, pick up some Asus Aura lighting. Then for of an, discs, you get a driver/software disc and dom of speech essay, a second disc for the ThunderboltEX 3 card. So the PCB that we saw when first digging into the box was the included ThunderboltEX 3 card.
It is structure extended essay a short PCIe x1 slot device with a black PCB. It has a thunderbolt header in the top right corner, then on the outside facing slot, you get an speech essay additional USB 3.1 Type A, a USB 3.1 Type C with Thunderbolt 3, and structure of an extended ib, a Mini DisplayPort In. The X299 Deluxe came with another small breakout board. This is the fan extension PCB. It hooks to the motherboard down in the bottom right corner of the daily in ancient greece, motherboard using the EXT Fan plug that is on the bottom left corner with the white header. Basically, this breakout board lets you add four more four pin fan headers. Of An Essay. To power it though you will also need to plug in that four pin Molex. This board also has the three headers for life greece essay, the includes thermal probes as well so if you plan on extended essay ib, using them you will need to integrate this board into college, your build.
The included rear I/O shield has a white and gray stripe finish on it that almost looks a little strange. I personally would still prefer this to be solid black as that normally goes with more cases, but it does match the Prime look. The back has a foam padding to replace the metal springs but if you look you can see that one of the USB ports does still have the metal spring so you do have to be careful not to of an ib, get that inside of the plug when installing the board. The Prime X299 Deluxe also comes with a high bandwidth PCB SLI bridge. Then for gattaca, wireless antennas, they include two. One is for the new Wireless AD adapter and it has a black finished connection so you can spot it, then there is structure of an essay ib also the normal wireless AC antenna as well. They have a new longer shape but still have magnets inside so you can stick them right to your case if needed. Digging through the huge pile of bags of accessories I found three bags with SATA cables, this gets you a total of 6 with three of those having a right angle on one end. The external fan breakout board cable was in dom of essay, the mix.
There was also a mini-display port adapter and structure of an essay ib, the Thunderbolt internal header cable as well. Then they included a 3 way SLI bridge that is gattaca essays perfection blacked out and PCB as well should you be looking to go triple SLI for some reason. There was a pile of screws for of an ib, the fan extension mounting and for the included vertical M.2 mount. There was also a Q-connecter that helps you plug in the front panel connections. Then I was really surprised to see three thermistor cables that you can hook to the board and attach to reader response essay, other items in your PC to of an, keep track of additional thermals. Board Layout and daily essay, Pictures. You most likely have seen Asus Prime boards before now, but if this is your first time Asus goes a different direction for the Prime boards when compared to their Strix, ROG, and TUF lines. Most of those are flashy and all blacked out but with Prime boards, they keep the styling simpler and they use white and shades of gray along with black. The Prime X299 Deluxe is a full ATX board that is 12 inches tall and 9.6 inches wide. Of An Ib. It is the reader, flagship Prime board in a series of structure of an extended ib, Prime X299 boards.
X299 itself is a higher end platform as a whole but with this being on the higher end of that, it is completely packed with features so let's see if we can get through them all. Essay. For cooling the of an extended, board has two main heatsinks. There is essays worked college a large low profile heatsink down next to the PCIe slots that covers and cools the structure of an extended, X299 chipset then the second up above the CPU that keeps the reader essay, power circuitry cool. The power heatsink fits in between the two sections of structure of an essay, ram DIMMS and life in ancient essay, it is just barely wider than the CPU socket. It has an angled design and is machined out of aluminum and finished with a gray anodized finish. Structure Of An. With everything going on the board it blends into the background. The chipset heatsink, on writing, the other hand, is ib large and very visible. Part of that is essay because of the white finish in the middle with a mirrored stripe up the middle. The stripe has Asus Aura lighting behind it when it is of an ib powered on. There is an Asus logo and then it has multiple steps in the same anodized gray finish as the other heatsink. The chipset cooler’s bottom left portion has a screw then you can remove and it will give you access to one of the daily life in ancient essay, two M.2 slots on the board.
This one is a little hidden but you still get full x4 bandwidth. Ib. This is also where you will find the new LiveDash. The small black block in reader essay title, the cover just above the PCIe x16 slot is a small OLED screen. This screen displays temperatures, frequencies, fan speeds, error messages, and it also shows boot information when booting. Of An Extended Ib. The white theme carries over to ap psychology questions, the covers over the rear I/O and the audio chipset. Essay Ib. Initially, I wasn’t sure if I would like all of these I/O covers because I prefer to see the actual board but when it comes to the rear I/O I always prefer a cover. The rear I/O connections never blend in with a black PCB, not that the essays worked college, all white cover on this board blends in either. But it does look good while being simple. The cover also has Asus Aura lighting integrated into the small space between it and the ram DIMMS. As for the audio shield, I prefer these to be metal but this plastic one may have foil under it. It covers up part of the Realtek ALC S1220A 8 channel audio chipset.
They have impedance sensing headphone amps built in and the Japanese capacitors are visible to round things out. Structure Essay. So starting up in the top left region on the board the main things going on here is the rear I/O panel on the left, the CPU socket on the right, and in between four DDR4 DIMMS that are half of the 8 total on writing high, the board. That said if you look closely you can see a few other things. Of An Extended Essay. Just below the I/O and just above the RAM slots, there are a total of three 4-pin fan headers. Speech. The two up top are for the CPU cooler or a water cooling pump and the one down below is one of many case fan headers. Then for structure extended essay ib, CPU power, there is an 8-pin header with a four pin next to it for additional power. Last but not least there is a small white header for RGB lighting that can be controlled via Asus Aura.
On the top right, the second batch of DDR4 DIMM slots are to the right of the CPU socket. Up in the top right corner just below one of the response essay, mounting holes there is a row of LED lights. These show the part of the boot process you are on so if your PC locks up mid boot it will help point to extended essay, what the issue is. Each LED has a description printed on the PCB next to it. Oddly enough the new OLED screen on the Deluxe also shows this same information, I’m not sure that these are needed with that and a LED readout.
Below the daily greece, LEDs is a 24-pin motherboard power connection. The plug below that might not even be recognizable to structure essay ib, some people. This is an M.2 that plugs in and sits vertically. Asus included a mounting bracket and screws to attach it. The connection runs at x4 so this is gattaca perfection a fast connection and the vertical orientation helps with keeping the drive cool by structure keeping it away from the college, CPU and essay, GPUs while letting airflow get to both sides. Then a half inch farther down the board is the new USB 3.1 internal header. Right now there aren’t many cases that support it, but when they do it will be much easier to use than the current USB 3.0 connection while adding faster speeds and response essay title, Type-C connections. Moving down the right side the chipset heatsink and the M.2 heatsink take up most of the space in structure of an extended ib, this area but that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything going on.
There are two 4-pin fan headers along the right edge and then another just under the heatsink. College. Then there is an older style USB 3.1 header that is positioned at a right angle for better wire management. Below that there are six SATA 3 connections and structure of an extended, a new U.2, all right angled as well. The U.2 is similar to M.2 but for an external drive but right now there aren’t many options other than the Intel 750 Series U.2 drive. Just past the U.2, there is one more SATA plug as well. From there we really get into all of the different connections. There is essays worked college another USB 3.1 header only for some reason this one isn’t listed at all in the specifications and next to it yu have one of the structure extended, two USB 2.0 headers. The white ext_fan connection is where we hook the included breakout board for ap psychology exam essay, the four additional fan headers and essay ib, the three thermal sensors.
Then down in the corner are all of the front panel connections. Over towards the left, there is another RGB header only daily life in ancient greece this one isn’t the of an extended essay ib, standard type, it is ap psychology a digital header for individually controlled LEDs. Extended Essay. Moving across the rest of the bottom edge there is an EZ XMP switch to avoid having to get into the BIOS at all to turn on essay title, a basic XMP mode to clock your ram at its suggested settings and next to it you have a few more buttons. The MemOK button helps when you have memory issues, pressing it will downclock the memory until your PC can boot properly so you can get into of an essay ib, the BIOS and adjust the ram to something that works. If that doesn’t do the job the clear CMOS button is right there in bright red. From there you have a LED diagnostic readout and large power and reset buttons. Last but not least the soundcard on writing, the left has its front panel audio connection right along the bottom edge. For PCIe slots, officially you get four x16 length slots with three of those having the metal shielding on them and structure extended essay, two being gray and spaced in a way to gattaca essays perfection, give two full slots in between them. Then there are two PCIe x1 slots just under the two gray slots. Of course, the slot speeds get more complicated depending on what CPU you are running.
The high end 7900X has a full 44 lanes but moving down the stack you get 28 lanes on structure extended essay, some of the middle CPUs and ap psychology exam essay questions, only 16 for structure extended essay, the two Kaby Lake CPUs. To accommodate this here is the PCI breakdown. If you have 44 lanes you are good to do anything you want, 28 is good for two video cards and two slower slots, and 16 lanes slows things down more but you do still get dual x8 slots just like a Z270 boards basically. 3 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x16, x16/x16, x16/x16/x8) 1 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (max at daily greece x4 mode) 2 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x16, x16/x8) 2 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (max at x4 mode) 2 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x16 or dual x8) 2 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (max at structure extended essay x2 mode) 2 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x1 (x1 mode) For the rear I/O Asus didn’t do too bad with connections. They used the extra space from not having to worry about onboard display connections to double up on response, network connections. Structure Of An Essay. Both are Intel NICs but one is the I219V and the other is the I211-AT. Both have LAN Guard support so you have some protection for power surges through them. Exam Essay. Then there are the structure of an essay ib, three wireless antenna connections. The two gold connections are for the Wireless AC that is also running on an Intel NIC.
The bottom darker port is for gattaca essays, the new Wireless A. It has its own antenna and it doesn’t have backward compatibility like AC but the speeds are crazy 4.6 Gbps over AC’s 1.3 Gbps. Of course, those are in lab numbers. On the far left is a BIOS reset button. Then on structure of an essay, the far right is the standard 5+Optical audio layout. For USB you get four USB 3.1 Gen 1 connections in the dark blue and four USB 2.0 with the black. Speech. The greenish connections are also USB 3.1 but they are Gen 2 that have additional bandwidth and ib, the small Type-C connection is also USB 3.1 Gen 2. Taking a look at gattaca essays perfection the back of the of an extended essay ib, board, there isn’t anything too crazy going on gattaca essays perfection, like M.2s on ITX boards. The back gives us a better look at the black PCB. You can also see the structure, split audio circuitry that goes all the way up to the rear I/O. Dom Of. Beyond that the back f the PC has the certifications and structure of an extended essay ib, overall you can see just how packed full the board Is with just about every area in use. For the reader response, BIOS the structure essay ib, UEFI on the Prime X299 Deluxe stuck with basically the same look and layout as the X370 Prime and gattaca essays perfection, X99 Prime boards that I have in the office.
When you boot into the BIOS you land on the EZ Mode page where you can do and of an extended, change the main offenders. High. You can do an extended auto overclock with the EZ System Tuning, change the boot priority with a drag and drop setup, adjust fan profiles, turn on XMP, and an essay, turn on Intel Rapid Storage. There is also some info about your PC and readouts for key information. Extended Essay. The advanced mode is a lot more like a traditional BIOS only reader response essay with a mouse and I should point out that the mouse moves correctly, something that a lot of other boards still have trouble with. Over on the right of structure of an essay ib, every page, you get CPU, Memory, and Voltage information on the fly. Up top, there are tabs to sort out life greece, all of the options and above that, there are a few main features like Qfan where you can adjust fan speeds. The main page itself just has BIOS versions and basic memory and CPU info. The Ai Tweaker tab is basically where you will do any and structure of an essay, all overclocking. Up top, it shows your target frequencies for the CPU, memory, and ap psychology essay, cache. Then from there, most of the main settings for the CPU and memory are on this page or there are subpages you get to from this page like DRAM timings for example. Asus didn’t skimp on anything.
With the number of of an extended ib, features built into the board, it also means a lot of on and off switches and tweaks you can do. Writing An Essay High. Basically, anything that isn’t overclocking is on the Advanced tab. Each of the options seen here have their own pages with even more options and of an, pages inside. The Monitor page is gattaca simple, this is extended essay ib where you turn all of the dom of, sensors on and off and structure of an essay ib, check all of the detailed readouts that the X299 Deluxe has. Remember on an essay, top of all of the essay, fan headers and normal sensors they also included three external sensors as well, it’s all here.
So the boot page isn’t as easy as drag and essays worked college, drop from the EZ Mode but you have that option and a lot more. You can change all of the boot order, dive into structure extended, secure boot, turn compatibility modes on and off for Windows 10 and response essay, older OS’s, and anything else booting related. The tool page is the catch all for just about everything else and really the ib, EZ Tuning and Qfan should also be here but they are already up on essay, top. You can secure erase your hard drive or set overclocking profiles. Mostly though I use the EZ Flash 3 Utility where you can reflash your BIOS. You actually get the open to download it or you can pull the new BIOS that you already downloaded off any installed drive including your OS drive, in the downloads folder for example for a simple upgrade. Structure Extended Essay. Then I also included a look at response the QFan page.
You can basically create your own fan profiles to help better tune your cooling to keep things cool and extended essay, quiet. Test Rig and ap psychology questions, Procedures. For testing, most performance tests are really only good for verifying that there are no big issues but I did still hook up our GTX 1080 Ti and run through a few tests. If nothing else this helps give you an of an extended idea of daily, performance expected with an i7-7900X and a GTX 1080 Ti. I tested in 3DMark as well as with two in game benchmarks for of an essay, gaming performance. For overall benchmarks, I followed up with Passmarks Performance Test 9 with its overall score and the new PCMark 10 with a few different scores. Right now with this being the first board in the office there isn’t much to perfection, compare to though I will say the performance numbers in game look great. The network tests were really the only big area of interest and even without another board to test against the X299 Deluxe had so many different connections itself that we can get a good idea of of an extended essay, overall performance.
There are two wired NICs and ap psychology, they were both Intel but the I211-AT performed a little better in our test. Then for structure of an extended, Wireless AC, the writing high, performance was in structure, line with what I’ve seen on Z270 and X370 boards. Sadly I couldn’t test the essays worked college, new WiGig Wireless AD as our access point didn’t support it at all. That said having WiGig AD support is huge, AC theoretically supports 1.3 Gbps and structure of an extended essay ib, AD does 4.6 Gbps for comparison. Of course in the real world, those numbers are much lower, but there is a reason they call it WiGig. Asus Prime X299 Deluxe. PCMark 10 Score. Asus Prime X299 Deluxe. An Essay High. Beyond the daily life in ancient, numbers, we also have features like the built in structure extended essay, Asus Aura lighting. Typically I only run single color lighting that matches my build but I kind of dig the default colors of the Aura lighting.
Both of the two arrays have individual LED controls so as you can see as they rotate through the colors more than one color shows at a time. There was lighting in the rear I/O cover and then again above the chipset cooler. When the lighting is worked college turned off Asus used a two-way mirror finish so if you don’t want lighting at essay all you can go that route and essays, keep the of an extended, clean Prime look. Then slipped in just above the top PCIe x16 slot was this small OLED screen. It caught me a little off-guard the ap psychology exam, first time I saw it but it ended up helping when getting our system up and running initially. You already have a standard LED debug readout at structure essay ib the bottom but this screen when booting will go through more detail, showing exactly what it booting up at writing the time. In the case of our photo, it was booting up the structure essay ib, SSD. When I had issues getting things started it also showed the error code and when up and running it showed temps. An Essay High. You can also set it to of an extended essay ib, show a logo or a PC name if you want. The location was questionable as the video card was really close to it, but I like the idea of the screen on ap psychology essay, a high-end board like this.
Overall and Final Verdict. Of An Extended. So I mentioned it in my initial Intel coverage but I should probably bring it up again here. Ap Psychology Exam Essay Questions. Most people are used to Intel’s mainstream boards that are, even at extended ib the highest end, limited by low PCIe lanes and daily in ancient greece essay, chipset features. So when you get into the Intel enthusiast platforms these motherboards seem a little ludicrous. It doesn’t help that boards like this have never existed on AMD platforms at all, Asus even had to come up with a new product name for structure essay ib, the high-end Threadripper boards introduced at Computex this year. But when it comes to wanting or needing the response title, highest possible end hardware this is where boards like the Prime X299 Deluxe come in structure extended ib, and Asus really delivered on writing high, that front. Structure Essay. They did a good job sticking with the Prime theme while adding a little 80’s Miami Vice feel with the large striped heatsinks on the chipset and M.2 slot, especially with the Asus Aura powered lighting across the daily life greece essay, top. Ib. If you didn’t look too close it might even seem like a standard board, but when you start to look closer you will notice that Asus didn’t leave any area unused. For example, they slipped in 6 different fan headers but that wasn’t enough. They added a breakout board that adds another four along with thermal sensor connectors as well.
You get two USB 3.1 headers, one USB 2.0, and a new style USB 3.1 as well, connections shouldn’t be a problem. They also did a good job on the rear I/O, especially with USB ports but they included a PCIe Thunderbolt card to expand on that even more if needed. Gattaca. The excessiveness continues even to the network connections where you get two different Intel NICs and two wireless options. Of An. One of those is the new WiGig Wireless AD, there are hardly any Wireless AD access point or router options out there but the Prime X299 Deluxe is high ready. This is the only area where I thought Asus could have gone crazier, 10G on one of the structure of an ib, NICs would have been nice to see at this level of essays, craziness. So I don’t think you could ever look at the Prime X299 Deluxe and extended, want for more features or connection options. Is it too much? For most builds, yeah, but when you start looking at daily throwing down $999 for of an essay ib, the currently available i9-7900X or a lot more for writing an essay high, the upcoming CPUs you can expect people to structure of an ib, also be going crazy with the rest of the dom of speech essay, hardware and structure of an extended essay ib, the Prime X299 Deluxe fits with that. Gattaca Essays Perfection. Stuff like the built-in OLED screen just adds to what you can show off. But all of that leads me to the price.
At $489.99 the X299 Deluxe is expensive. Do I think you get a lot of features that help justify that price? yes. But unless you are planning on of an ib, spending $3000 or more on your PC this isn’t really in most budgets. That said, just like that Lamborghini Countach poster I had on daily life essay, my wall when growing up. The Prime X299 Deluxe is part of extended essay ib, that dream PC that most people won’t ever be able to afford, but you could pick up something like the Asus Prime X299-A and pretend you are driving the Deluxe right?

Sansom described a system in which swaggering samurai used their swords to cut down commoners. Miserable peasants barely eked out of an extended a living, and urban merchants were scorned as unethical profiteers.
According to Sansom, change was loathed. Gattaca Perfection? The government kept the rest of the world out, denying “themselves all the gifts which the West then had to structure ib offer.” This move, said Sansom, “arrested the cultural development of Japan” (Sansom 1932, 455, 457). Scholars today largely dismiss this view. Yet it remains pervasive. Films and manga comics glorify samurai bravado. But they ignore much else about the period. Thus, even the gattaca perfection well-informed often are surprised when they read more recent histories of the period. Such newer works describe the political system as a rational “integral bureaucracy.” This system was “not merely a samurai institution.” Rather, it depended on non-elite “commercial agents and activities” (Totman 1981, p. 133). Newer histories call the era “a time of extraordinary social growth and change. In terms of population and production, urbanization and commercialization, and structure of an extended essay ib, societal sophistication and elaboration, the daily life greece century was one of unparalleled development.”
What should readers make of these discrepancies? What do teachers and extended essay ib, students really need to perfection know about the Tokugawa period? This brief essay addresses these questions by (1) sketching the outline of extended essay ib Tokugawa history, touching on politics, economics, society, and culture; (2) introducing some historical debates regarding the Tokugawa period; and (3) giving references for further reading on important topics. The Tokugawa Political Settlement. The first Tokugawa shogun was Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616). He came of age in an era of ap psychology essay questions violence and conflict.
During the structure ib Warring States period (c.1467-1590), centralized political authoritythe imperial court and the military government (shogunate, or bakufu )had lost its effectiveness. Practical political power had passed into the hands of approximately 200 local warlords, or daimy#333; . The daimy#333; controlled their own territories. These territories were called domains. By the end of the period, some daimy#333; had become extremely powerful. Each commanded large swaths of life greece territory and tens of thousands of warriors. One such leader was Oda Nobunaga (1534-82).
Nobunaga was a daimy#333; from the province of structure of an extended essay ib Owari in central Honshu. Using strategic alliances and brutal military tactics, Nobunaga brought about one-third of the country under his control. When he was assassinated in 1582, his most able general, Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-98), took his place. Hideyoshi was a brilliant military and political tactician. His talent and ambition had allowed him to rise from a humble peasant background. Building on an essay Nobunaga’s achievements, Hideyoshi brought all of Japan under his control by about 1590. Two problems marked Hideyoshi’s later years. One was his growing belief that his power was unlimited. This megalomania was reflected in unsuccessful attempts to structure of an extended essay ib invade Korea and China. The second problem was his difficulty in dom of speech, producing an heir.
At his death in 1597, he had only one infant son. Structure Of An? He entrusted his son’s fate to five trusted allies. Each swore to ap psychology protect the heir and help ensure the Toyotomi clan’s future. Among these allies was Tokugawa Ieyasu. Ieyasu controlled significant territory in extended essay ib, northeastern Honshu. Ieyasu’s castle headquarters was located in the city of Edo (now Tokyo).
Hideyoshi had been dead scarcely three years when Ieyasu turned on his former lord. In 1600, his forces defeated the gattaca Toyotomi. In 1603, Ieyasu established a new shogunate in his family’s name. He went to war once again in 1615 to completely wipe out the Toyotomi and their allies. Structure Of An Essay Ib? From then on, the Tokugawa maintained political authority for 253 years without resorting to military combat. The primary political goal of Tokugawa Ieyasu and writing, his heirshis son, Hidetada (1578-1632) and structure extended, grandson, Iemitsu (1604-1651)was to cut off the roots of potential dissent and rebellion. In the late 1630s, Tokugawa Iemitsu expelled Portuguese and Spanish Catholic missionaries and traders. Speech? This decision was motivated more by the political threat posed by converts, especially daimy#333; converts, than by dislike of Christian doctrine or the of an extended essay foreign presence in an essay, Japan. The early shoguns were wary of other daimy#333; . Many of these daimy#333; were recent allies who were not totally committed to Tokugawa rule.
The Tokugawa shoguns built on the ideas and tactics of essay ib Nobunaga and Hideyoshi. They developed a form of political rule that was authoritarian but not dictatorial. This can be seen in perfection, the way the early shoguns distributed land to their daimy#333; allies. The Tokugawa kept only about a quarter of the land available for redistribution for themselves. Of the remaining lands, the shogunate allocated about 10 percent to essay ib blood relations (known as the collateral, or shinpan daimy#333; houses).
Another 26 percent went to longtime loyal allies, the ap psychology questions fudai daimy#333; . The remaining 38 percent went to the most recent, less stable allies. These allies were the extended ib “outside,” or tozama daimy#333; . The early Tokugawa shoguns’ use of land distribution to both win the allegiance and writing an essay high, encourage the dependence of daimy#333; illustrates the blend of resourcefulness, pragmatism, and foresight characteristic of Tokugawa political rule. In its policies, the extended essay shogunate was careful to balance demands on daimy#333; with privileges granted to them. For example, the shogunate never directly taxed the daimy#333; . Instead, it exercised indirect levies such as requiring daimy#333; to supply labor and raw materials for the construction and maintenance of writing an essay castles, roads, post stations, and the like. The shogunate also forced all daimy#333; to commute between their home domains and extended, the shogunal capital of Edo, a time- and resource-consuming practice. The shogunate exercised authority by compelling the wives and dom of essay, children of structure extended ib all daimy#333; to reside permanently in ap psychology essay, Edo. There, they were under the shogun’s watchful eye. Daimy#333; were also required to secure shogunal approval before marrying. At the same time, daimy#333; were for the most part free to govern their domains as they saw fit.
They issued their own law codes and administered justice. Some printed and circulated their own currency. The shogunate intervened only if requested to do so. In these ways, the Tokugawa governing system balanced authority and autonomy. Economic Growth and Social Change. Studying the Tokugawa era reveals many seeming contradictions. Of these, perhaps none is extended essay ib more striking than the contrast between the Tokugawa rulers’ vision of the ideal economic system and the reality of economic growth and change. With a few notable exceptions, the shogunate and daimy#333; viewed the economy in simple agronomist terms. Essay? In this view, the peasant’s role was to produce basic foodstuffs. Peasants were to give a good portion of their products in tax to support the ruling classes.
Artisans used their skills to craft necessary non-food items. Finally, goods that could not be acquired through any other means could be purchased from essay merchants. Merchants were deemed the necessary evil of the economic system. In fact, however, the early Tokugawa period (until about the mid-eighteenth century) saw rapid and sustained economic growth. This growth occurred first in the agricultural sector.
But growth also occurred through merchant-driven trade and market activity. The concentration of population in cities served as a major impetus for daily in ancient essay, growth and change. Yet many Tokugawa authorities clung to their old notions of a static, agrarian-based economy. The samurai class, who were forbidden from engaging in profitable trade or farming, were disadvantaged by structure of an essay, Tokugawa policies and attitudes toward the economy. The ruling class was prevented from taking advantage of economic growth.
At the same time, substantial benefits went to merchants and even to essays worked college market-savvy peasants. Economic growth thus contributed to the inversion of the status hierarchy enshrined in the “four class system.” An increasingly wealthy, educated, and structure essay ib, powerful commoner population was created. Daily In Ancient Greece Essay? Meanwhile, samurai, especially those of low rank, steadily became economically weaker. Growth in Agricultural Production and structure of an ib, Population. During the Warring States period, agricultural production grew. Production increased by about 70 percent overall between 1450 and 1600.
Growth continued into the early Tokugawa period. Tokugawa policies that promoted land reclamation and land clearance supported increased production. In addition, the disarming of peasants and essays college, local religious communities that came with the “Tokugawa peace” put more people back on the land. The net result was a 140 percent increase in land under cultivation between the years 1600 and 1720. Peasants not only farmed more land, they also increased the intensity with which they worked it. Through careful monitoring and the spread of information about cropping patterns, fertilizers, and the like, Japanese peasants in of an extended essay ib, the Tokugawa period continued to increase their land’s productivity. The overall growth in agricultural productivity caused a rise in the general well-being of the essays people. This trend can be seen in the significant rise in population during the seventeenth century. Extended Ib? Although scholars argue over exact figures, Japan’s total population around the year 1600 was most likely 12 to 18 million.
The population at the time of the first reliable national census taken by the shogunate in 1720 was around 31 million. These data indicate that the population more than doubled in a little over 100 years. For a number of reasons, including family planning and voluntary limitation of gattaca family size among the peasantry, population growth leveled off in of an, the eighteenth century. Exam Essay? Japan’s population grew at a negligible rate between the early eighteenth and late nineteenth centuries. Structure Of An Extended? The economy, however, continued to essays college grow, leading to an economic surplus.
That surplus was a key factor in Japan’s rapid industrialization in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Growth in Markets and Trade. Increased agricultural production and population growth provided the base for subsequent growth in trade. Structure Of An Extended Ib? Increases in trade were also enabled by such developments as the creation of reliable and effective transportation networks. Ap Psychology Questions? The road system in particular was expanded and improved under Tokugawa rule.
Shipping networks on sea routes were also expanded, especially those linking the major commercial centers in western and eastern Japan. Along with growth in trade came growth in the use of money. Tokugawa Ieyasu and his immediate successors worked to systematize the minting and use of coinage and to standardize currency. Structure Of An Extended Essay? In turn, this greatly facilitated domestic trade. These factors comprised the building blocks for a well-developed local and national economy. Regional and domainal capitals were linked by reader response title, good roads. Smaller market towns and settlements grew along these roads. Extended? Local areas developed specialty goods and products. These goods were shipped to and through Japan’s growing cities in an increasingly integrated national economy.
Growth of Cities. During the Warring States period, local lords began to gather their warriors around them in headquarters centered on fortified castles. This tendency was formalized by Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu, who demanded that their retainers live in the capital cities rather than in their domains. As a result, so-called castle towns ( j#333;kamachi ) sprung up in questions, the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Structure Of An Ib? Some 90 new towns appeared between 1572 and 1590 alone. The number continued to grow in subsequent decades.
The emergence of in ancient castle towns and later of cities had a significant economic impact. Building cities required assembling, equipping, feeding, housing, and supervising huge numbers of of an extended ib laborers and technical specialists. It also required importing vast amounts of gattaca essays perfection resources: soil, stone, lumber, thatch, kilns for baking roof tiles, charcoal, and the like. From the late sixteenth century on, these labor forces came to number in the tens of thousands. As a result, as castle towns grew, laborers and service personnel settled in of an, and around towns. Samurai settled near the castles of their lords. The commoners who served the samurai moved into adjacent areas. Over time castle towns evolved into urban areas.
Development of the city of Edo is a prime example of the urbanization process. When Ieyasu made it his capital in 1590, Edo was a swampy backwater of a few hundred residents. Out of this unpromising location, Ieyasu built a magnificent shogunal capital. Laborers cut down forests, leveled hills to fill in wetlands, rerouted rivers, and dredged creeks and canals. They built bridges and walls, erected shrines and temples, and constructed buildings. Worked College? Among the buildings erected were opulent daimy#333; mansions and the magnificent castle of the structure of an extended essay ib shogun. Warehouses, storefronts, and common dwellings were also built. By 1600, Edo was a town of some 5000 dwellings. By 1610, it was reportedly a clean, well-organized city of about 150,000 people.
As samurai retainers of the shogun and of daimy#333; flooded into the city in the early seventeenth century, the population zoomed upward. By 1657, Edo had about exam essay 500,000 residents. By 1720, it was the world’s largest city outside of China, with a population of about 1.4 million. Half a million of these residents were samurai. Edo was the shogunal capital, so its population was exceptionally large. But smaller, regional castle towns also grew significantly. Essay? Kanazawa, headquarters of an extensive domain on the Japan Sea coast, was a town of 5,000 in 1580. Ap Psychology Exam Essay Questions? It grew to 120,000 in 1710.
Nagoya, a small town in the early seventeenth century, had become a regional center of 64,000 residents by 1692. Osaka, always a major city, grew from 200,000 people in 1610 to 360,000 by 1700. It hit a peak of half a million by the late eighteenth century. Growth was good for the economy in general. Essay Ib? It affected different classes differently, however. In particular, merchants benefited from the increase in trade, markets, and urbanization. Samurai suffered from those same phenomena. Why did the high samurai lose out? First, samurai were paid in fixed stipends, disbursed in rice. These stipends were based on an individual’s rank and office and did not increase at a pace equal to the rise in essay ib, prices. Second, with the growth of the market and monetization of the economy, samurai had to trade their rice stipends for daily life greece, cash.
This process was controlled by merchants in Edo and Osaka. It put samurai at the mercy of both the unstable market price for rice and the greed of merchant moneychangers. Finally, samurai were forbidden by law from engaging in farming or commerce, which might have afforded them some economic relief. All of these factors made it almost impossible for samurai to benefit from the growth occurring in the economy. As samurai became increasingly impoverished, they began to borrow on future stipends to meet present needs. Thus they put themselves in debt to merchant lenders. Extended Ib? Having samurai at their mercy not only earned the merchants a measure of college profit, it also gave them significant symbolic leverage over their samurai superiors. For the extended essay samurai, being indebted to lowly merchants was extremely galling. Many low-ranking samurai whose stipends gave them barely enough to get by felt they had to scrimp and save while merchants prospered.
Matters were made worse by the fact that samurai had to keep up appearances. Protocol deemed that they dress properly, live in good style, and engage in the social activities (which involved expensive gift-giving) that were required of them, but were increasingly beyond their economic means. Tokugawa authorities were aware of the problems facing samurai. They repeatedly tried to shore up the political and moral order by elaborating on the unique role of perfection samurai as moral exemplars and scholar/administrators. By definition, commoners could not fulfill those roles. Through the Ky#333;h#333; Reforms of the early eighteenth century and the Kansei Reforms at the turn of the nineteenth century, the shogunate enacted measures aimed at stabilizing and ib, strengthening the economic and political status of the samurai. But the authorities’ reassertion of essays worked college proper political order could not change reality. Neither shogun nor daimy#333; could offer much practical help to financially strapped samurai.
More broad-minded thinkers such as the philosopher Ogy#363; Sorai (1666-1728) proposed radical reforms. One such reform was returning the samurai to the land so they could farm. Another was overhauling the structure of an extended office and rank system so that lower-ranking “men of gattaca talent” could rise to positions of power. Extended Essay? These men often languished in exam essay, idleness while less deserving sons of high-ranking families inherited their fathers’ positions. In the end, economic growth in the Tokugawa period favored commoners over the elite.
The Emergence of Commoner Culture. While they were not shy about commenting wryly on the state of society, urban commoners were not political activists. Peasant protests did break out in the eighteenth century, largely due to authorities’ failure to of an extended provide relief during times of crop failure and food shortage. But the new urban bourgeoisie did not attempt to overthrow the warrior government. Rather, urban commoners tended to turn away from the troublesome world of writing an essay high politics. They used their newfound wealth to fashion a new style of life and art. Structure Of An Extended Essay Ib? While the new style borrowed aspects of elite “high” culture, it was in many ways utterly new to the early modern urban scene. By the Genroku period (1688-1703), one could see in Edo and other cities a flourishing merchant class that was developing a cultural style all its own. Merchants flaunted their wealth, building enormous houses and dressing in finery that exceeded that of samurai. The shogunate was not at all happy about this. Essays Worked College? It repeatedly issued laws forbidding merchants to wear fine silk clothes and restricting the construction of large and showy homes in merchant quarters.
However, such laws were difficult to essay enforce. Various sources show repeated examples of merchants’ conspicuous consumption. By the mid-eighteenth century, popular representations abounded of the poor samurai pawning the clothes and essay questions, swords off his back for a little extra cash. Then a merchant redeemed them and paraded around the city in the purchased finery. Such sights enraged samurai. Yet they had to suppress their anger and keep up the façade of of an essay ib reserve and prosperity appropriate to their status. As a popular saying of the life in ancient time went, “if a samurai is starving, he uses a toothpick all the same.” Despite their economic plight (or perhaps to of an gain relief from the misery of it), samurai frequented the entertainment areas originally created by and for merchants. These areas consisted of theaters, teahouses and daily in ancient essay, restaurants, brothels, and structure of an essay, street entertainersfortune-tellers, jugglers, and story-tellers. Brothels were a new feature in daily in ancient, the cultural life of cities. Of An Extended Essay Ib? Prostitution had a long history in reader response title, Japan.
Not until the Tokugawa period did the government seek to control it through licensing and surveillance. Legal brothel activity was confined by the government to structure extended ib certain geographic areas in dom of, most of Japan’s cities. These areas were referred to as the structure of an extended ib licensed quarters. Of course, there was also much illegal prostitution in exam, cities. The shogunate could scarcely control it, much less eradicate it. The high-ranking courtesans ( y#363jo ) of the Yoshiwara were not common prostitutes.
Apprenticed as young girls, they trained intensively in various arts, most notably music, dance, and singing. They were ranked according to their level of training and experience, much like the geisha that still exist today. The most famous courtesans were respected as artists and professionals. Of An Extended Essay? They were also made famous through their depiction in worked college, plays, fiction, and the visual arts. Indeed, many became movie-star-like trendsetters. Men wanting to meet with a high-ranking courtesan had to go through an elaborate and expensive process of courting her before he could even lay eyes on extended essay ib her. Technically, the essay pleasure quarters were enclaves for structure extended ib, commoners.
Samurai were banned on the grounds that they were supposed to be upright, moral, and frugal characters with no time for crass indulgences. In spite of the warnings to stay away, samurai were frequent clients in the pleasure quarters. They attempted to exam disguise their identities by structure essay, removing their swords and hiding their faces behind large straw hats. The themes of honor and sacrifice inherent in such highly dramatic stories made commoners feel their culture had something in common with that of the elites. Yet there is gattaca perfection a distinct commoner twist to these ideas. This twist both honors and degrades the great samurai tradition of self-sacrifice. Actual incidents of love suicide seem to have proliferated in the late 1600s, perhaps becoming even more common in the 1700s. Of An Essay Ib? They became a cultural fad encouraged by the romanticization of the act on stage. In 1722, the shogunate forbade the treatment of shinj#363 on stage, seeing it as an worked, offense against proper family order. The phenomenon of love suicideboth actual and stagedbrings to the fore the issue of cultural fads and their spread: How, exactly, did ideas circulate?
Literacy, Education, and the “Library of Public Information” Assessing popular literacy before the advent of structure of an extended modern universal education is difficult. Essays Perfection? Historians use many techniques to estimate the nature and level of literacy in pre- and structure of an ib, early-modern societies. Essays Worked College? Still, their findings are often tentative. Among the structure most common techniques is analyzing signatures on official documents (wills, marriage records, etc.) as a measure of people’s ability to write. Other techniques include studying educational infrastructures and questions, determining school attendance rates. Historians also look at of an extended, data on cultural phenomena such as publishing and circulation of books and other printed matter. In Tokugawa Japan, as in many parts of the early modern world, literacy varied widely.
Variations occurred by class and occupation, by geographic region, and, to some extent, by gender. The ruling elites, Buddhist and Shinto clergy, and commoner intellectuals on the fringes of the elite (Confucian scholars, doctors, and writing, minor officials) tended to be quite learned. They possessed considerable knowledge of Japanese and Sino-Japanese (or kanbun , the style of writing derived from classical Chinese, which was used in formal discourse). They also knew the classical works of both the Japanese and Chinese literary and philosophical traditions. By the end of the seventeenth century, literacy and learning were beginning to spread more widely. Rural village headmen and extended essay, well-to-do urban townsmen and women were becoming literate and, as time went on, impressively learned.
These people became the primary consumers of perfection popular literature and of an essay ib, of the arts. The infrastructure for popular education developed considerably in the Tokugawa period. Learning moved out of the religious establishments and private academies and into much more accessible venues. In these venues, commoner children were able to gain basic functional literacy and often much more. The demand for dom of essay, books was thus extremely high. Publishers in the major cities churned out texts of all sorts.
While Buddhist and Confucian texts remained the mainstays of structure extended highbrow publishing, many more publishers produced for the general reading audience. Illustrated fiction and poetry were popular. So were nonfiction manuals, primers, encyclopedias, travel guides, almanacs, and maps. An Essay? As printed materials circulated among ever-greater numbers of readers, they conditioned in people certain patterns of thought and ultimately of behavior. As one scholar has put it, there emerged in Tokugawa Japan a broad-based and structure extended essay ib, widely read “library of public information,” which produced commonly held forms of daily in ancient greece essay social knowledge (Berry 2006, 13, 17). When faced with the question of precisely what percentages of what sorts of structure of an extended ib people were literate, historians do not give a precise answer. The data simply is not conclusive. The best we can do is point to figures that may serve as broad indicators of the dimensions of literacy.
Among samurai, who made up 6 to 7 percent of the exam population, literacy was almost universal and generally of a very high level. The degree of learning varied, however, according to rank, office, and wealth. There are accounts of illiterate samurai, especially later in the Tokugawa period. Of An Extended Essay Ib? These cases occurred among the lowest, most impoverished ranks. Though it is unclear how prevalent samurai illiteracy was, it was probably rare. It was certainly the source of great shame for the unlettered individual and his family. High literacy is common in an elite ruling class.
As we have noted, however, commoners in the Tokugawa period practiced considerable self-governance. The Tokugawa state was very bureaucratic. Its officials, samurai and commoner alike, were required to keep detailed records. They also had to essay write a great deal of correspondence. Official duties thus demanded high levels of literacy not only among samurai, but also among the of an extended essay ib upper strata of urban and speech, rural commoner populations who held such responsible positions as city ward official or village headman. Recent research indicates that, by extended essay ib, the end of the seventeenth century, the rural elitenumbering some 200-300,000 out of a total population of around 30 million, or less than 0.1 percent of the populationpossessed “extraordinarily high literacy and reader response title, numeracy” in order to fulfill their many administrative duties (Rubinger 2007, 30). Below the structure of an essay ib rural elite were the landowning farmers. Their numbers varied over time and by region.
They probably comprised about 50 percent of the overall farming population. Essays Worked? The farming population constituted about 90 percent of the total population. Most landowning farmersagain, roughly half of the totallikely possessed “high functional literacy.” They could read and understand tax accounts computed by village officials. They could file grievances and extended essay, petitions to authorities when necessary. Literacy among urban commoners, who were fewer in number than their rural counterparts, was almost certainly higher. Educational opportunities were more accessible and educational texts more available to urban-dwellers. Literacy among urban commoner women in particular probably far outstripped that of rural women. Literacy and essays worked college, education were by no means monopolized by the elite in essay, Tokugawa Japan. Common knowledge and common culture spread widely among the common people. This widening of the knowledge base greatly facilitated the dom of essay subsequent development of the modern industrial nation-state. The Discontented and the End of an Era.
In other times and places, learning among the common people has been a recipe for dissent. Eventually, learning among commoners has led to structure extended ib the overthrow of aristocratic governments. This was not true in college, Tokugawa Japan. Unrest did occur. Structure Extended? Peasant protest in particular was widespread and sometimes intense in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Ultimately, however, those responsible for overthrow of the Tokugawa regime were members of the ruling class itself: the samurai.
This kind of gattaca essays “aristocratic revolution” is unusual in extended essay, world history. Samurai grievances were compounded by the events of the early decades of the nineteenth century. Bad crop harvests in the 1830s resulted in widespread famine, disease, and death. The problems were especially acute in the poor northeastern part of the country. When officials failed to essays provide adequate relief, peasant protests skyrocketed in number and severity. At the same time, Japanese leaders watched nervously as the great Qing empire in China was decimated by the British in the first Opium Wars of 1839-1842. China was thereafter “carved up like a melon” by the other Western powers.
The Japanese had already fended off advances by structure of an essay, the Russians in the 1790s and early 1800s and by the British in the 1820s. By the response title 1840s, it seemed likely that the Americans would try their hand at “opening” Japan. In 1853, a U.S. naval delegation led by Commodore Matthew C. Perry arrived with demands from U.S. President Millard Fillmore. Fillmore demanded that Japan agree to structure extended essay ib trade and diplomatic relations with the United States. The shogun was given a half-year to consider Perry’s request. Observers, especially powerful daimy#333; , saw that the shogunate had no new ideas about college how to handle the foreign threat, much less the domestic problems wracking the country.
In the end, shogunal officials agreed, in spite of the emperor’s disapproval, to sign trade and diplomatic treaties with the United States. Structure Ib? As in China, the essays worked college terms gave great advantages to the Western powers. Japan was relegated to semi-colonial status. For pro-imperial, anti-shogunal forces, the foreign crises, in particular the of an essay ib signing of the treaty with the United States, were the daily in ancient last straw. Plans to overthrow the Tokugawa regime began in earnest in the 1860s. Essay Ib? Radical samurai staged direct attacks on foreigners in Japan, resulting in several international incidents. The most serious of these incidents sparked the bombardment of domains in Satsuma and Ch#333;sh#363 by Western naval forces.
Finally, in January 1868, combined military forces of the domains of Satsuma and Ch#333;sh#363 marched into Kyoto, took control of the imperial palace, and ap psychology essay questions, proclaimed the structure essay ib restoration of the emperor and the abolition of the essays Tokugawa shogunate. Court nobles and daimy#333; would form a new government in place of the old. Although its exact structure was unclear in early 1868, the restoration was a clear denunciation of Tokugawa rule. The last shogun, Tokugawa Yoshinobu (or Keiki), retreated to Edo. He held out for another few months before officially resigning in April 1868. Remnants of pro-shogunal forces staged a resistance until later that year. They were ultimately defeated. Although the Tokugawa regime ended in 1868, it bequeathed a deep and rich political, economic, and ib, cultural legacy to worked modern Japan. One cannot properly understand Japan’s modern history without understanding its Tokugawa past. Indeed, the story of how Japan became modern begins not in 1868, but in 1603. Historians have characterized the type of of an ib government practiced in the Tokugawa period in various ways: “an integrated yet decentralized state structure,” the daily life essay “compound state,” and Edwin O. Reischauer’s celebrated oxymoron “centralized feudalism” are only a few of the often awkward terms devised to describe the essential Tokugawa balance of authority and autonomy. “Integrated yet decentralized state structure” comes from Eiko Ikegami, The Taming of the Samurai: Honorific Individualism and the Making of Early Modern Japan (Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1995), pp. 164-176. Ikegami also uses the term “neo-feudal” in a comparative context. “The compound state” is used by Mark Ravina, following Mizubayashi Takeshi, in “State-building and Political Economy in Early-modern Japan,” Journal of Asian Studies , Vol. 54, No. 4 (November 1995), pp. 997-1022. “Centralized feudalism” appears in Edwin O. You need to take a side and dom of speech, make a compelling argument. Now, let's look at two sample essay questions, and how to answer.
This should give you some idea of what to essay, expect. When answering this question, the first thing you need to be aware of is the speech, definition of patriotism itself. Patriotism is defined as having an emotional attachment to and pride in a nation, which an individual recognises as their homeland. Extended Essay? This question is asking you to analyse two things. -Firstly, it wants you to consider the reasons that you believe people should or shouldn't be patriotic. -Secondly, the question wants you to look at the consequences of patriotism, and consider whether we should or shouldn't be patriotic in ap psychology a wider context.
For example, you could look at the positive effects of patriotism; i.e. taking an interest in the affairs of one's nation, paying taxes, providing social support etc., and contrast these with the negative effects of patriotism; i.e. Structure Of An Ib? nationalism, war and dom of, hatred. Introduction . You should start off your essay by defining what patriotism is, before moving on to stating whether you believe it to be a good or bad thing. Then, you should state (briefly) why you believe this. Essay? For example, if you are against patriotism you could state that there are a number of social and economic reasons for this. If you do include any assumptions, then make sure you tackle these in your essay. For. If you are arguing for an essay high, patriotism, there are a number of ways in which you can make your argument: -Primary amongst these, you could argue, is the positive impact that patriotism has upon the citizens of a nation. Patriotism encourages people to structure of an extended ib, keep to the laws of the country, work for essays, the greater good of the nation and provide support to other citizens within that nation. -Patriotism often has the result that people of one nation are seen as a 'family', and will stand up for one another, living in unity and respect.
The more patriotic the citizens of structure of an extended ib, a nation, the more they will work to build a stronger and healthier nation. This is worked, particularly true for moments of national crisis. It's important for people not to feel alone in these circumstances, which can often be extremely emotionally testing. A good example of this is the 9/11 attacks in America. Of An Extended? The people of the USA banded together to daily life greece, support one another, making the events much easier to cope with from an emotional standpoint. -On a more minor level, patriotism also leads to structure of an extended essay ib, positive events such as the World Cup or the Olympics, where national teams compete. Against . In order to argue against patriotism, there are a number of perfection, points which you could make: -You could start by enforcing the idea that patriotism is subconsciously xenophobic. We are all members of the human race, and are no different to one another. Countries are just arbitrary borders designed to enforce the of an extended essay ib, idea that English are different from essay questions Spanish, Italians from Germans etc. This is not healthy, and often leads to a severe clash of cultures.
-Secondly, there are numerous examples from structure history that indicate patriotism being a negative thing. Exam Essay? Primary amongst these is the world wars. In particular, World War 2 was caused by extreme national pride (in Germany). Combined with severe social unrest, this led to an uprising which resulted in essay ib the deaths of millions of essays worked college, people. -You could also argue that despite the success of events such as the World Cup, there is structure extended ib, still an underlying xenophobia prevalent from the citizens of each nation towards other nations. I.e. the English are rooting against essays college, the Italians, or the Germans, or the structure of an extended, Spanish. Such events could easily be held without this. Often, it leads to people who aren't patriotic being ostracised or treated as traitors. This is not healthy. Counter . To counter the above, you could argue that there is a difference between patriotism and speech, nationalism. Patriotism means having a healthy respect for your nation, whereas nationalism is the term for taking this to extreme levels.
World wars were caused by nationalism and not patriotism. Patriotic people are not encouraged to hate people of other nations; just to take pride and respect in their own. Patriotism should not be blamed for the behaviour of extremist individuals. Rebuttal . You could respond to the above by stating that although there is a difference between patriotism and nationalism, patriotism breeds nationalism. Of An Extended Essay? By enforcing an unnecessary and speech essay, unhealthy idea that people of one nation are different from those of another, we generate tension between countries, which leads to a sense of hatred from disenchanted individuals.
This results in extremist behaviour, and of an, accelerates global conflicts. Conclusion . In your conclusion, you should pick a side, and then summarise the points that you have made for gattaca essays perfection, this side. Just as in the essay, it is a good idea to of an essay, acknowledge the other side of the argument or one particular key facet of reader response essay, this side; before dismissing it with a strong counter argument. Make sure you clearly define the side that you have chosen, and the reasons that you have done this. This question requires you to examine the question of whether schools should have a uniform for their students. For . In order to argue that schools should have a uniform, there are a number of points you could make: -Firstly, you could argue that having a uniform encourages discipline. Just as you would set rules for writing, children to abide by, in order to ib, encourage order, you would set out a uniform as a code of conduct. -Secondly, you could argue that children don't have the maturity to choose clothing that is appropriate for the school environment. They are at a rebellious age, particularly in their teens, and giving them the choice of what to wear to school could have negative consequences. -Thirdly, it could be argued that allowing children to dom of speech, wear their own clothes to school will detract from their learning. Schoolkids and teenagers are at a vulnerable age, where they should be focusing on their education. Structure Ib? Allowing them to wear their own clothes gives them another thing to think and worry about.
-Finally, you could argue that by having a uniform, schools reduce the chances of bullying. Schoolchildren are competitive, and there is a danger that certain individuals will be singled out for their choice of clothing, leading to conflict and distress. Against . In order to reader essay title, argue against school uniforms, there are a number of points you could make: -Primarily, you could argue that we should be encouraging children and teenagers to express their individuality. Structure Extended Ib? Their choice of clothing is worked, a fantastic way to of an essay ib, do this, and is a key form of expressionism.
People are unique, and shouldn't be grouped together in a communist fashion. -You could argue that having a uniform is actually more distracting than not having one, as having a uniform involves sometimes complex rules of formality; i.e. keep your shirt buttoned up to this area, keep your socks this high, that can distract from their learning. Allowing children to wear a relaxed and comfortable choice of exam essay questions, clothing will have positive effects in the long run. Counter . To add to the above, you could also incorporate a discussion about whether schools should have a dress code, as a pose to a uniform. This would be a more relaxed code of of an essay ib, dress, which allowed children to wear their own clothes, whilst still keeping to a set of essays worked college, ground rules i.e. Structure Extended Ib? no offensive t-shirts, skirts above knee height, etc.
If you are in favour of having a uniform, you could also discuss at what age you believe the need for dom of speech, a uniform becomes obsolete or loses its value. Conclusion . To conclude your essay, you should state clearly which side you are on, using the points made in your essay to back this up. You should also summarise any other arguments that you have made in the essay, for example on whether schools should have a more relaxed dress code instead of a uniform.
