Book Review: And the Birds Rained Down, by Jocelyne Saucier. Special to National Post. October 12, 2012 12:00 PM EDT. Translated by push singh Rhonda Mullins. Essays On Charles! It’s a failing of language that it will never capture what it means for light to fall on a loved one’s face. Photography’s failure, on singh, the other hand, is that it can only evoke narrative the story requires some assembly on our part to figure out afi thesis showcase why that one was loved. Jocelyne Saucier’s And the Birds Rained Down investigates the spaces left open by each of these failures. The short and push singh phd thesis tender novel is a meditation on the kinds of afi thesis light that can be shined on both regional and personal histories, and on the burden of representation. Singh Phd Thesis! What can so many thousand words, or so many photographs, really convey about the richness of even one single life? And the Birds Rained Down was the first Canadian book to win France’s Prix des Cinq Continents de la Francophonie, and Saucier’s use of language retains no small measure of enchantment in Rhonda Mullins’s translation. The novel begins with an unnamed photographer on the hunt for survivors of the great fires that ravaged Northern Ontario at the beginning of the 20th century.
While she is ostensibly interested in phd thesis, portraiture, it becomes clear that what the photographer is really after is experience, or the stories of experience. In the push singh opening pages she’s staring down the end of her compulsive photography project; there’s just one known survivor left, supposedly living in a shack in an unpopulated forest. “Like the collector,” Susan Sontag wrote, “the photographer is animated by a passion that, even when it seems to 2012 be for the present, is linked to a sense of the past.” And so it is push singh phd thesis, with Saucier’s photographer, taken as she is with both history and those who have somehow survived it. Sontag links the photographer’s interest in their subject to the collector’s fascination with the genuineness, or authenticity, of their desired objects, and so does Saucier. Her photographer is after “the precision of the showcase grain that seeks out the light in the creases of the flesh.” She feels a suffusion of kinship with a lonely woman who operates the Matheson Fire Museum, for they both strive to collect the relics of the past, authentic love stories on the one hand, and “old miracle survivors” on the other. The novel’s structure also presents an occasion for Saucier to play with portraiture. There are italicized interstitial sections that sit like cards describing a work on push singh phd thesis, the gallery wall between longer explorations of voice.
The first half of the low residency writing book introduces the dramatis personae one by one in chapters that use each character’s name (or in the case of the photographer, her principal role) for their title. While Boychuck, the survivor our nameless heroine is seeking, turns out to have died, she stumbles on phd thesis, to a strange community of feral old men. Tom and low residency mfa creative writing europe Charlie have forsaken the conveniences of greater civilization and live without modern amenities in neighbouring shacks in the woods. Steve, the innkeeper of an push phd thesis, all-but-abandoned roadside hotel, and Bruno, a shady middle manager in the marijuana business, are Tom and Charlie’s primary links to the outside world. Having chosen to be wild, the old men live in close quarters with death. The animals they trap, for food and furs, and the shortening days of autumn are constant reminders of the franklin autobiography questions precariousness of life, of the inevitability of the end. Push Phd Thesis! By the second half of the novel, each character’s voice has become sufficiently tied up to ocr salters mark a larger story, and the novel’s prose turns over into a study of the ways in which light can shine on histories of both place and self. The horror stories of the great fire begin to surface and smoke seems to fill the pages, though Saucier skilfully funnels that dark bleakness into wonder.
By relying so heavily on metaphors of dark and push light, hot and cool, the novel becomes nearly as sensually evocative as, one imagines, the photographs and paintings described in the text. There’s a subtle magic to the way this short novel moves. The photographer, gathering her stories and taking pictures, is english essay questions, a conduit for an imagined oral history of the Great Fire, and the many losses and the legends it spawned in its devastating wake. Her investigative work makes for short turns and dead ends down memory lane, but these frustrations only add to the fable-like quality of her quest. Saucier’s italicized interstitials double this impression, adding another loving layer to a story about the wilderness of this winter so late in the lives of these characters. • Emily M. a good history essay The following outline is intended as to provide one example of how to write an essay. Push Singh Phd Thesis? Treat it as food for thought, as providing a set of suggestions some of which you might incorporate into your own method for showcase, writing essays. It is useful to push, begin by considering why essay-writing has long been the method of choice for ocr salters, assessment in history. The chief reason is that no other method provides as effective a means of testing a student's comprehension of a topic. We want you to show us that not only have you acquired a knowledge of the topic but also that you fully understand the topic and the issues raised by it. Essays test understanding by asking you to select and re-organise relevant material in order to produce your own answer to the set question.
An undergraduate essay need not be particularly innovative in its approach and singh, insights, but it must be the product of the student's own dialogue with the subject. Essays which do not answer the question can only be regarded as demonstrating some knowledge of the essay questions topic, they cannot be said to show understanding of the topic. Essays which plagiarise or merely reproduce what others have said do not even show knowledge of the topic. Plagiarism is thus not merely a matter of theft, it involves an entirely unacceptable subversion of the learning process. 2. Is there a right and a wrong answer? History essays are less about finding the push phd thesis correct answer to the set question than they are about demonstrating that you understand the issues which it raises (and the texts which discuss these issues). With most historical problems (certainly the most interesting ones) it is a.p. essay seldom possible to arrive at push phd thesis, a definitive answer. The evidence almost always permits a variety of solutions, and different approaches generate divergent conclusions. There are, however, limits to low residency writing, the field of possible solutions, since they must fit in with 'the evidence'. Of course, exactly what constitutes 'the evidence' is almost invariably one of the issues under discussion among the historians who are most deeply engaged with the problem, but in general for each historical question there will be a body of evidence which is recognised as being relevant to it. This body of phd thesis evidence will typically comprise what the primary sources tell us about the events and phenomena under discussion.
A good answer will need to harmonise with all of afi thesis showcase 2012 this evidence, or explain why particular items have been dismissed as having no bearing on the problem. It follows from all of this that there certainly are wrong answers that is, answers which fall outside the field of possible solutions or which fail to take account of received evidence even though there is no 'absolutely right' answer. Essential steps: select a question; identify the subject of the question; what are you being asked to do - that is, what kind of information will you need to singh phd thesis, answer the question, and how will you have to titles, treat it? Circling the key words in the question is sometimes a helpful first step in working out exactly what you need to do. It is useful to note that there is usually a natural way of structuring your answer: that is, a way of organising an answer which follows naturally from the format of the question and which will put the fewest obstacles in the way of the reader: 'Explain' and push, 'why' questions demand a list of english questions reasons or one big reason; each reason will have to be explained - that is, clarified, expounded, and illustrated. 'Assess', 'evaluate' and 'define-the-significance-of' questions require judgements supported by reasons, explanation and evidence.
You must show why your assessment is the singh best by benjamin essay, considering its merits vis--vis alternative evaluations. It might be useful to define and singh, defend the criteria on which your judgement depends. That is, to explain why they are the best criteria for judging the historical phenomenon at issue. A.p. Essay Questions? 'What-role-did-X-play-in-Y' questions imply a functionalist approach - that is, they require that you identify the function of some phenomenon, group or institution within some specific system. Thus, the subject of the question is the 'Y' rather than the 'X' element. That is, the question requires a discussion of the system as a whole and the consideration of alternative explanations of how 'X' worked within it. Push Phd Thesis? 'To-what-extent' questions involve a judgement of measure. One way of mfa creative answering the question would be set up a series of 'tests', as it were, that can be investigated in turn. This essay will examine five spheres which cast light on the extent of Jewish influence in high medieval France: namely, their role in the commercial life of the towns, the role of Jewish banking in the agrarian economy, their influence on Christian intellectual life, .. [and so on]. The essay would need a conclusion in which you pulled together the results of your test cases: It has been seen that the singh phd thesis Jews exerted a profound influence on the intellectual life of the universities but almost none on that of the established monastic orders.. 'Quote-and-discuss' questions require you to identify the issue at stake and to produce a reasoned response.
You may respond, for example, by agreeing with the quotation in which case you will need to a.p. essay, explain why agreement is the singh best response, why it would be wrong to disagree. You should consider the merits of a variety of responses. If possible you should always examine the book or article from questions, which the quotation has been taken in order to push singh, discover what its author meant by it, to discover how the author has understood the issues. 'Compare-and-contrast' questions demand the identification of similarities and differences. Franklin Essay? One method of tackling such an essay would be to distinguish five or six areas of similarity and contrast, and to devote a section of the essay to each area - a section in which you would assess the degree of similarity and reach a sub-conclusion. The conclusion would then require a summation of the various 'sub-conclusions'. It needs to be stressed that none of these types of question calls for a narrative approach . You will never be asked to singh phd thesis, produce a narrative of what happened. Essays On Charles? In rare circumstances, a few sentences of narrative may form part of the evidence cited in support of a point, but the essay as a whole should be organised according to a logical structure in which each paragraph functions as a premise in the argument. The analytical and expository voice will always prove more effective than the narrative mode of writing. Singh? The aim of your initial reading should be to identify an argument which answers the question - one which you find plausible and can carry through with conviction. For this purpose, it will be useful to showcase 2012, read at least two or three items, including a recent book covering the general area in which the topic falls. Articles in reference books such as an singh encyclopaedia can provide an showcase overview, but they rarely provide adequate coverage of the push singh phd thesis issues.
Citing such works will undermine the credibility of your essay. Do not forget to make notes as you go. Making notes helps you to summarise arguments and ideas, to select points relevant to your essay, to clarify and adjust your understanding of the essay question and on charles darwin, of the topic it bears upon. But your main priority should be to discover an argument. Once you have come up with a working argument, you need to draw up a plan to singh, guide the next stage of your research. It should comprise a list of the chemistry scheme points which each paragraph will attempt to demonstrate, and rough notes on supporting examples. It may be useful to begin by thinking again what type of question you have chosen and by looking the natural way of answering it. In order to draw up a plan you will need to evaluate its merits: What points will I need to make in order to sustain this argument? Are there alternative points of push singh view which will have to be considered and refuted in order to make this argument work?
Do I have enough examples and evidence to support the points which are crucial to my argument? Do I need to know more about the benjamin essay questions examples I'm planning to use? Perhaps there is another way of looking at phd thesis, this piece of afi thesis showcase 2012 evidence which I'll have to mention or even refute? Having decided on the line of argument you intend to use, and identified areas where you need more material, search the singh phd thesis reading list and bibliographies of the texts you've been using for books and writing europe, articles which will help you to solve these problems. Go and collect the phd thesis information, making notes and adding notes to your plan as you go along. Do not forget to make careful bibliographical notes for every book and article you consult. You will need this information when it comes to footnoting your essay. Inevitably, the essays on charles previous stage will turn up things you hadn't thought of and books with better things to say about the topic. Do not panic.
Ask yourself: can your argument be saved with a few adjustments? Does the argument need to be re-constructed from scratch? If so, how can I recycle the singh phd thesis information I've already begun to collect? Much will depend upon how confident you now feel about benjamin franklin essay questions, your argument. Follow your instincts: if the argument feels wrong, look for a better one. Singh? It is better to start again than to write an essay that lacks conviction. If complete reconstruction is unavoidable, go back to '5. Drawing up a Plan'. Having revised you argument (and plan), it's time to write your essay.
If you've carried out steps one to five properly, it should be possible to write the first draft up in two or three hours. (a) Writing an Introduction. An introduction should show how you intend to afi thesis showcase 2012, answer the phd thesis question, by (1) indicating the line of argument you intend to low residency mfa creative writing europe, take, by (2) giving an overview of the organisation of what follows, and by (3) indicating the sort of material or evidence you will be using. It is an effective strategy, especially when writing a short essay, to begin with a bold, attention-grabbing, first sentence which shows the marker that you know what you are doing: that is, answer the phd thesis question as briefly as possible with your first sentence. The second sentence should then enlarge upon the argument indicated by the first. Darwin? (b) The body of the essay. Intelligent use of paragraphing is crucial to the success of an essay. Often, it is best to organise the paragraphs so that each makes and phd thesis, defends a point or premise essential the argument of the low residency writing essay. (By 'premise' is meant a point which is part of and essential to the argument of the essay.) It must be entirely clear how your points fit into the argument: essays which meander around the topic leaving the push marker to join the dots to comprise an answer are not acceptable, since they fail to demonstrate understanding.
It is a good idea to use 'topic sentences' to 2012, signal the singh subject and make explicit the low residency mfa creative point of each paragraph. These ought not to be too repetitive in form but should show how the paragraph fits into the argument of the phd thesis essay as a whole. The following topic sentences (here marked in red for ocr salters a2 coursework scheme, clarity) would, for example, be appropriate as a way of introducing paragraphs that comprised a series of 'tests' in a 'to-what-extent' essay that called for an assessment of the push singh phd thesis effects of the Black Death on the development of english essay medieval Europe. It is also possible to assess the extent of the catastrophe by looking at the level of demand for land in push singh phd thesis the major urban centres. Essays? In Genoa, for example, land prices fell sharply from a high in 1310 of. [several sentences of examples] . The dramatic fall in the prices of land within urban centres implies an equally sharp fall in push phd thesis the numbers of people wanting to live in cities and, thus also, a sudden decline in the actual number of people living there. Notice how the point briefly introduced in the topic sentence is developed naturally by the second sentence of the paragraph.
It is better to avoid trying the explain everything in a single sentence: clusters of mfa creative writing europe sentences that flow from one to another are much more effective! Signposting your evidence will give the essay that all important sense of singh phd thesis critical depth and ocr salters a2 coursework, originality: Seapower was a crucial to European expansion. This much is illustrated by the way in which Europe expanded between the tenth and sixteenth centuries. Southwards and eastwards expansion in the eastern Mediterranean was heavily dependent upon the availability of effective fleets of warships and trading vessels. There were critical moments, such as in the late eleventh-century conquests of Sicily and Sardinia, when. [and so on.] You need to singh phd thesis, give the marker a sense of where your opinions end and of where the supporting evidence begins.
But remember to vary your signposts: using the same phrase over titles, and over again will distract and phd thesis, bore the reader. If the phd thesis supporting evidence is not a well-known and irrefutable fact, it will probably need to be given the additional support of phd thesis a footnote indicating where you have obtained your information or which historian's interpretation of the piece of evidence being deployed you have chosen to follow. It will sometimes be useful to quote other authors, especially primary sources, but do not overdo it. It is essay often better to put things in your own words while still clearly signalling the source of the idea and push, using a footnote (e.g. 'According to phd thesis titles, Mayer the first crusade.'), since this helps to show that you have understood what was being said - providing that you have indeed grasped what was being said! (c) The Conclusion. All essays need a carefully thought out singh phd thesis, conclusion which follows logically from the points made and affirmed in the course of your essay. It need not rehearse the points you have rejected. Always check to see that the conclusion you have drawn is the one which follows logically from the points and evidence you have assembled. (d) Footnoting. Opinions differ over whether to phd thesis titles, footnote after completing the first draft or as you write.
Sometimes, it is best to go back and footnote the essay after you have finished, because inserting footnotes can disturb the flow of your writing. On the push phd thesis other hand, it is useful to consider what will need to be footnoted as you write, since footnotes are part of the rhetorical apparatus of a formal essay and give weight and power to showcase, an argument. For the same reason, it is best to put the notes at the bottom of the page rather than at the end of the essay. It looks more impressive (especially if you cite well and widely), and saves the marker flicking back and forth. The markers, it should be noted, are under instructions to check footnotes. (e) Once you have finished you should compile your bibliography . (f) Now save your essay, print out push, a text, put it aside for a couple of days, and work on mfa creative writing europe, something else. Inevitably, when you come to re-read your essay, you will always think of better ways of putting things. You may even think of supporting evidence you could add to the text, but make sure that any additions do not spoil the flow.
You may find that some of push singh your points are irrelevant: this material should be disregarded. You should also ask yourself whether the mfa creative links between the paragraphs are clear and singh phd thesis, logical? Perhaps the essay would be more effective if they were put in a different order? If the essay has been written on ocr salters chemistry mark scheme, a word processor it should be easy enough to push singh phd thesis, achieve this by cutting and pasting paragraphs. Your essay should have a clear and consistent structure throughout, so that one paragraph follows another logically and carries the argument forward. You will need to edit: for grammar, spelling and punctuation; to remove unnecessary verbiage, colloquialisms and jargon; to ensure that the footnotes and bibliography conform with the required style sheet; and for the coherence and quality of your writing. You should always check the printed text of your essay before submitting it. The eye tends to overlook errors on the screen, and spell checkers almost invariably allow a significant number of mistakes to slip through. 'Their' and essay, 'there', for example, will both be accepted as correct by a word processor regardless of which one you should actually have used in a given context.

Writing Better University Essays/Referencing. By referencing the sources you use in your essay, you do a number of push singh things. First of all, you comply with an academic convention. Secondly, you make your essay look more professional. In fact, it not only looks more professional, but its argument becomes more powerful. Thirdly, you allow others to check your sources. This is often only essays a hypothetical issue, but a look through the list of push singh your references will allow others to judge your argument quickly. Fourthly, you acknowledge your sources and a.p. english questions thus admit that like everyone else, you’re a dwarf on the shoulders of the giants. The essential bits of referencing require you to provide enough information to others so that they can identify the push, source. What exactly is phd thesis, meant by push phd thesis, enough is open to phd thesis titles, debate, and this is also where conventions come in. Essential is push singh, that you do provide references.
Ideally, you would do so properly. It’s not so difficult, and the sooner you get into the habit of referencing, the better. There are two forms to scheme, do the referencing: including them as footnotes, or use a variation of the Harvard system. Your institution may have a preference, or even a house style. Push! In most cases, your markers will be happy with a consistent and appropriate system. The Harvard system is also known as author/date, and will be described here in more detail. Within your essay, whenever you make a statement that is essentially based on somebody else’s work, you should attribute the source. You do this by phd thesis, stating the push singh, author(s) and the year of the english, publication you consulted.
Where the name of the singh, author occurs naturally in the text, it does not need to ocr salters scheme, be repeated. The references are usually included at the end of push singh phd thesis a sentence, or where inappropriate in a place where the text flow is not interrupted too much, such as in front of a comma. This may be necessary, for example, if only the first half of your sentence is based on someone else’s work. Switzerland seems to be the ideal place for studying the effects of essays on charles darwin direct democracy, since no other country has gone as far in terms of implementing such means (Franklin, 2002). The name of the author is included in push phd thesis, brackets, together with the benjamin autobiography, year of publication. Some styles put a comma between the two, others just a space: (Franklin 2002). Where there are two authors, both names are included: (McLanahan Sandefur, 1994). Some styles prefer the word and , others prefer the ampersand ( symbol). Where there are more than two authors, the name of the singh, first author is given, followed by et al. (which literally means and others ): (Almeder et al. , 2001). Franklin Autobiography Questions! Some styles put et al. into italics, others don’t. If you have two or more references for the same argument, you should separate the push singh phd thesis, references with a semicolon (; symbol): (McLanahan Sandefur, 1994; Steinberg, 1999).
If there are very many references to an argument, use your own judgement to select the most relevant ones. What should you reference? Basically references should be included to any argument made by someone else, including numbers you cite. However, statements of europe general nature need not be attributed to anyone. Singh Phd Thesis! A statement that the questions, sky is singh phd thesis, blue alone does not require a reference. However, if you state that the sky is blue because of a specific reason, then you should include a reference. If you use the exact words of an author (quotation), you’ll need to give the number of the page where you copy from. This is benjamin questions, needed so anyone can quickly check the original words, should he or she feel so. See the push phd thesis, separate section on a2 coursework quotes. It’s not uncommon that you want to use the arguments of say Max Weber, even though you have not actually read this particular book. Strictly speaking, you should not reference Weber’s work for such a statement, because you have not actually read it.
Can you really be sure this is what Weber said or meant? The technically correct trick is to add cited in push, after the a.p. english essay, reference: (Weber, 1918, cited in Hamilton, 2002). You should always reference the push, work you consulted, and this includes the year of publication. Ocr Salters Chemistry Mark Scheme! Many books are published in their second and third editions, so giving the singh phd thesis, correct year can be helpful. Similarly, even if a book is merely a reprint by a different publisher, give the year of the edition you consulted. The page numbers may differ. If it’s just a second print of the exact same book, use the original date. Some readers find this unsatisfactory, since Weber surely did not publish anything this year. The convention to circumvent this issue is to give both years: the essays on charles, year of the original publication, together with the one of the work you consulted. Sometimes slashes are used between the dates (/ sign), others prefer the used of square brackets ([ and ] sign): Burke (2004/1774) or Burke (2004 ). Another small issue occurs where an author published more than one book or article in a single year, and you want to cite more than one of them.
The trick here is to add letters from the alphabet after the year to identify which of the works you refer to. Use the letter a for the first of your references, the letter b for the second and so on: (McManus, 1994a) and (McManus, 1994b) are two different works. To sum it up, inside the push phd thesis, text, you give the family name of the author, followed by the year of the publication. Always cite the text you consulted, because in the end it’s your responsibility that the references are correct. At the end of your essay you should include a list of references. Such a list of references provides more details than just the name of the ocr salters chemistry scheme, author and the year of push singh publication. It’s this list that allows identifying the work cited. Benjamin Franklin Autobiography Questions! Each work you cited in the essay is cited once, and listed in alphabetical order. Note that a bibliography and push list of references is not technically the same. A bibliography is a list of relevant sources that may or may not be cited in the main text. References are the sources you cited, even if they are rather trivial.
Use the heading references for your references. For books, you put the family name of the benjamin autobiography questions, author(s) and their initials, followed by the year of publication in singh phd thesis, brackets, the title in darwin, italics, the place of publication, and finally the name of the publisher. If there are editors, give their names instead of the authors’. If there is a subtitle to the title, this is usually separated using colons (: sign). Push Singh! Where there are more than four authors, it’s common to use et al. Mfa Creative Europe! after the first three, but some styles insist on singh phd thesis citing all authors. Sometimes a book is co-published by benjamin, two publishers, and this can be indicated by using a slash (/ sign). Where you give the editors rather than the push phd thesis, actual authors, you indicate this by adding (eds) after their names, or (ed.) if there is only one. The title is capitalized. For example: Anderson, C. Zelle, C. (eds) (1998) Stability and Change in German Elections: How Electorates Merge, Converge, or Collide , London, Praeger.
Granovetter, M. (1974) Getting a Job: A Study of Contacts and Careers , Chicago, Chicago University Press. Grass, G. (1963) Katz und Maus , Neuwied am Rhein, Rowolth/Hermann Leuchterhand. Hall, S. (ed.) (1997) Representation: Cultural Representations and Signifying Practices , London, Sage. Halsey, A., Heath, A. Ridge, J. (1980) Origins and Destinations , Oxford, Clarendon Press. Chapters in a book are cited separately, especially if the book is edited. You give the family name of the author and his or her initial, the year, the name of the chapter in single speech marks (‘ and ’ sign; not capitalized), followed by the word in , and the name and year of the editor(s).
If you cite only one chapter, you can give the whole reference at the end; otherwise it’s enough to give the name and year of the franklin essay questions, editor. In this case, however, the phd thesis, book itself needs to phd thesis titles, be included in the list of references, too. For example: Allen, J. (1995) ‘Global worlds’ in singh, Allen, J. Massey, D. (eds) (1995). Hardin, R. (1990) ‘Public choice versus democracy’ in Chapman, J. Essays Darwin! Wertheimer, A. (eds) (1990). Singh Phd Thesis! Leroy, P. Verhagen, K. Darwin! (2003) ‘Environmental politics: Society’s capacity for political response’ in Blowers, A. Push Singh! Hinchliffe, S. (eds) (2003) Environmental Responses , Chichester, Wiley. An entry in a printed encyclopaedia or a dictionary can be cited if it was a chapter in a book. The editors are often given on the front of the reference book.
For example: Jackman, R. (2001) ‘Social capital’ in Smelser, N. Baltes, P. (eds) (2004). Journal articles are cited in a way that is benjamin essay, quite similar to chapters in a book. The main difference really is that details about the volume and page numbers are included, too. The reference starts with the name and initial of the author, the year in brackets, the title of the article in single speech marks (not capitalized), followed by the name of the journal in italics (capitalized), and singh phd thesis further details. The details of journals are commonly abbreviated as follows: the volume number followed by a colon and the page numbers of the article. If there are different numbers to a volume, this is darwin, indicated by including it in brackets before the colon, if known.
Online journals may not have page numbers. For example: Burt, R. (1987) ‘Social contagion and innovation: Cohesion versus structural equivalence’, American Journal of Sociology , 92:1287–335. Thoits, P. Hewitt, L. (2001) ‘Volunteer work and push singh phd thesis well-being’, Journal of a.p. english essay Health and Social Behaviour , 42(2):115–31. Phd Thesis! Small, C. (1999) ‘Finding an invisible history: A computer simulation experiment (in virtual Polynesia)’, Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation , 2(3). Phd Thesis Titles! Valente, T. (1996) ‘Social network thresholds in the diffusion of information’, Social Networks , 18(1):69–89. Pages on the internet should be cited where used. You should bear in mind the quality of the site before citing from it, but if you use a web site, reference it, too. There are many internet sites that are perfectly acceptable as sources for phd thesis your essays. The reference includes the name of the author and titles initial, the year in brackets, the push singh phd thesis, title of the document in italics, the word online in square brackets, the essays, place of publication, the publisher, the words available from : followed by the URL, and the date when the phd thesis, document was accessed in brackets.
The date is important, because unlike printed works, web sites often change their content or even disappear. Many web sites include a copyright note at the bottom, giving you an indication when the content was written. For example: Moser, P. (2005) Politik im Kanton Zurich—eine Synthese [online], Zurich, Statistisches Amt des Kantons Zurich, available from: http://web.archive.org/web/20051224111845/http://www.statistik.zh.ch/statistik.info/pdf/2005_15.pdf [accessed 27th October 2005]. Chan, T. Goldthorpe, J. (2004) Social Status and Newspaper Readership [online], Oxford, Oxford University, available from: http://users.ox.ac.uk/ sfos0006/papers/news4.pdf [accessed 31st March 2005]. Newspaper articles are very similar to journal articles in the way they are cited. The key difference is that rather than the volume, the phd thesis, date is given. The reference therefore includes the name and initial of the author, the year of publication in brackets, the title in single speech marks, the name of the newspaper in push singh phd thesis, italics (capitalized), the date, and finally the page where the phd thesis titles, article was found. For one page it’s customary to push phd thesis, use the abbreviation p. , for mfa creative writing articles running over two or more pages, the abbreviation pp. is common. For example:
Cockburn, P. Usborne, D. (2004) ‘Burning with anger: Iraqis infuriated by new flag that was designed in London’, The Independent , 28th April, pp.2–3. Handouts from a lecture can be referenced and should be referenced if they are used as the basis of what you write. It’s normally a better idea not to use lecture notes, but try to find the original referred to in the lecture. Not only will you have more control over what was actually said, but also can your readers more easily access books and journal article than lecture handouts. The reference to a lecture handout includes the name and push singh initial of the lecturer, the showcase 2012, year in bracket, the title of the singh, handout in single speech marks, the words lecture notes distributed in followed by the name of the course in italics, the word at low residency mfa creative writing, and the name of your institution, the place, and date of the lecture. Singh! For example: Burt, S. (2005) ‘Survey sampling and administration’, lecture notes distributed in chemistry a2 coursework mark scheme, Survey Research Methods at Cambridge University, Cambridge, 9th February 2005. Personal conversations are not commonly considered good sources, but if they are what you use as the basis of your essay, you should include such conversations.
It’s usually a good idea to have another reference to a printed piece, but sometimes this is not an option. In terms of phd thesis giving the reference, personal conversations are very easy: the name of the franklin essay, person you spoke to, the singh, year in brackets, the words conversation with the author and the date of the conversation. For example: Smith, E. (2004) conversation with the essays on charles darwin, author 6th July 2004. The same format can also be used for personal e-mail, or instant messengers. Phd Thesis! Once again, bear in mind the credibility of your sources. With e-mail messages it’s customary to include the english, e-mail address of the sender in brackets after the name, but it’s essential that you obtain consent from the author. The subject line of the singh phd thesis, e-mail is franklin autobiography, often included as the title. With all forms of personal conversation, the issue of consent is important.
It’s always a very good idea to check with the author first. There are sometimes cases that are not so straightforward as the average book or journal article. For everything there is a solution in the academic conventions. Singh! If you refer to musical works, television programmes, or pieces of art, check with your institution how this should be done. If everything else fails, remember the function of referencing, and provide a reasonable amount of information for essays darwin others to chase the work.
Common problems include the lack of authors, unpublished documents, or lack of publisher. Where there is no author, often there is an push singh phd thesis organization. Put the name of the organization. If there is no-one, it’s customary to put the word “Anon” instead of the benjamin autobiography, author’s name. Push! For example: IDEA (1998) Women in Parliament: Beyond Numbers [online], Stockholm, International IDEA, available from: http://archive.idea.int/women/parl/toc.htm [accessed 28th February 2006]. Essay! UN Statistics Division (2006) Social Indicators [online], New York, UN Statistics Division, available from: http://unstats.un.org/unsd/demographic/products/socind/inc-eco.htm [accessed 20th February 2006]. Sometimes the year of push singh a document is not known. Where you have a rough idea, you can put a c before the phd thesis, date, such as in (c.1999). Where you just have no clue, there is push singh, no need to phd thesis titles, panic: simply put the push singh, word unknown instead of the year. Documents that are unpublished as such, for example a thesis or a draft article you were sent, should come with the indication that they are not published.
This is low residency mfa creative, easily done by including the word unpublished in brackets at the end of the reference. With articles sent to singh, you, you should always ask permission to cite; just like you would with an ordinary e-mail. For theses it’s common to include the a.p. english questions, kind of thesis after the title, such as PhD thesis or MA thesis . Push Phd Thesis! Where the name or place of the publisher is unknown a very simple solution is benjamin, used: leave the information blank. Phd Thesis! This is particularly an issue with internet sites. Including the URL is in this case much more helpful than trying to guess the name of the essays, publisher. Course materials provided to you are treated very similar to the lecture handouts. Give the push, name of the author, the year in brackets, the course code if there is benjamin essay, one, the course title in italics (capitalized), the kind of singh phd thesis material and its title in single speech marks, place of publication, and publisher.
For example: Peake, S. (2003) U216 Environment , Video 4 ‘Shanghai Boom’, Milton Keynes, The Open University. The Open University (2004) DD305 Personal Lives and Social Policy , CD-ROM 2 ‘Interviews and Interviewing’, Milton Keynes, The Open University. The capitalization of titles may seem a bit confusing, but it follows a simple logic: it’s the main title that is capitalized. In the case of a book, the main title is that of the book. Phd Thesis Titles! In the case of journal articles, on phd thesis the other hand, the main title is thought to be that of the journal itself. It might be confusing that within the journal, the title of an article often is capitalized. Capitalization is not very hard to achieve. A.p. Questions! Put in capital letters are all nouns, proper names, the first word, verbs, and adjectives.
This is in fact almost everything. Phd Thesis! Not put in capital letters are words like and , in , or , or with . Unfortunately most word processors don’t capitalize properly when told to, and put every single word in capital letters, including the ands and chemistry a2 coursework withins that should not come with capital letters. Different publishers have different house styles, and you might come across a title with a word you would normally spell differently. This is common with British and American variants, but there are other words, too, such as post-modernity . No matter how strongly you might disagree with the spelling, you should always use the original spelling in the references. It’s perfectly fine to change them in your essay itself, but not in the references.
A good manual of singh style, such as the Oxford Style Manual (Ritter, 2003) will be able to writing europe, give you further guidance. Many course providers have their own preferences or house styles, and it’s advisable to singh, follow these conventions. Where there are no house styles, using a system such as the one outlined in this guide in a consistent manner will be well received. You’ll find full references to every work mentioned in this book at the end. It’s difficult to write about referencing without mentioning plagiarism. Plagiarism describes the act or result where you take the words or ideas of somebody else and present them as your own. Plagiarism is considered serious academic misconduct and low residency writing can be punished severely. Most importantly, however, your reputation is on the line. The origin of the word plagiarism gives you an idea what others will think of you when you plagiarize.
The word goes back to the Latin plagiarius , a thief and kidnapper—in particular a child snatcher and somebody abducting slaves. The modern use in academia brands you a literary thief (OED, 2005). There are a number of reasons why plagiarism occurs. The worst case is deliberate plagiarism (for whatever reason). Careless work may lead to plagiarism, but is push singh phd thesis, not commonly considered as severe an offence as the deliberate case. Phd Thesis Titles! Careless work is singh phd thesis, often a sign of students working too closely to the original, and this can be easily remedied. Without changing your habit, simply by phd thesis titles, including references to push phd thesis, where you got the ideas from, and putting speech marks where you quote, you technically are done. In practice, you still might rely too much on essay the original and not deliver as good an push essay as you could. Deliberate plagiarism, often motivated by laziness, can’t be remedied directly.
At the time, it may seem a reasonable risk to copy from the titles, internet, but is it really worth it? Bear in mind that there is something in for you, too—that is something in addition to the grades. The more you write, the easier it gets. If you work too closely to the original, there is a simple solution: don’t write the essay with the books in front of you. By so doing, there is very little danger that you copy word by push phd thesis, word.
In a way, you force yourself to make the benjamin franklin autobiography essay, material your own: and that is a good thing—it makes a better argument, your essay will be more original, and not least, you’ll also get better grades. Singh Phd Thesis! Rather than having the a2 coursework, original works in front of you, try using your notes. As you still will need to put those references for the ideas you take from others, make a note whenever you do so. I use brackets with three X inside, to remind myself that I need to put a proper reference. Often I remember very well who said this, so I include, for example, (Granovetter XXX) inside the text. When checking the essay, it’s hard not to notice the triple X; and there is always the search facility in push phd thesis, the word processor.
By putting a place holder, I can get on with the job of writing without interrupting my thoughts. Ocr Salters A2 Coursework Mark Scheme! Equally important, I leave some traces indicating to myself that there is some more work to be done: finding the proper reference, for example. If you think plagiarism is hard to detect by push singh phd thesis, your marker, think again. There are a great number of signs that give plagiarized work away. Technology-wise, your markers are likely to english questions, have the same possibilities than you have if not more. If you can copy and paste something you found on the internet, it’s equally easy for push singh phd thesis your marker to find it on a search engine, again. It would, of course, be possible, to change plagiarized work to the extent that the deed is no longer easy to essays darwin, spot. Usually, however, this is just as much work as writing the essay yourself. Just to give you an idea, the markers of your essay will not only have access to push, the same search engines than you have. There is software to scan essays for duplicates; and many institutes even have access to essay banks (sites on the internet where complete essays are sold). Mfa Creative! The most successful tool, however, is probably the human brain with its incredible ability to remember.
If you copy from a colleague, chances are that your marker has read this one, too. If you copy from a set reading, chances are that your marker has read this one, too. Knowing what is on the reading list helps spot essays that refer to other works a great deal, or don’t refer to some of the core reading. Your marker can estimate how many readings you had time to read, or whether you’re likely to have read a great number of papers on the Belgian perspective of whatever issues is set in the question. An even easier sign is having the same paragraph twice in the same essay, for example. There are more subtle signs, too, such as sudden changes in phd thesis, style or formatting. Many people are unaware of how idiosyncratic one’s writing style is. Writing! They are in fact so individual that writing styles can be used to determine how many people wrote a document, such as the Christian Bible (Jakoblich, 2001). Writing style includes the tenses we use, the level of formality, our own choice of push singh phd thesis words, the kinds of low residency writing europe metaphors we put, whether we use American or British English, choices over punctuation, the length of sentences, or the use of singh phd thesis specialist terms. Typographic signs include font size, choices of where to essays on charles darwin, break paragraphs, spaces in between lines, and things like proper m- and push phd thesis n-dashes (when copying from electronic articles).
The presence or lack of references is english essay questions, often an push phd thesis easy sign: for example, where there are many references inside the text, but few at the end, or where the citation style changes within a single essay. A marker may get suspicious where there is suddenly a section with many references, or suddenly none. Sometimes, students even include hyperlinks in references when copying from phd thesis, electronic journals; and have them automatically underlined by the word processor. Even where you take care of these issues, a paragraph copied from the internet will very unlikely link well with the rest of your essay. The style may be inappropriate, or just different. Essays from an essay bank may be internally consistent, but very rarely are they really relevant to the exact question you have been set. In summary, you can avoid plagiarism easily. This is done by push, writing freely without having the books right in front of you.
Instead, work with your notes, and a.p. english essay take care to push singh phd thesis, put references where you use the ideas from others. Benjamin Autobiography Questions! Don’t use the internet to copy from, no matter how tempting it is. Push Singh! It will hardly ever be worth it. There is an important difference between citations and quotations. Unfortunately, confusion is commonplace; and the terms are frequently used incorrectly. Knowing your citations from your quotations is a.p. questions, useful when writing essays. It’s essential, in fact, if you want to reference properly. Citations are about ideas you take from others.
Quotations are about the exact words used by others. This is really the whole distinction. So, when using your own words, you cite; when you use the words of someone else, you quote. “Why can’t a man be more like a woman?” (Blankenhorn, 1995, p.117) is a quotation, because I use the push singh phd thesis, exact same words Blankenhorn did. English Essay Questions! However, when stating that families in the US are increasingly defined by the absence of a father (Blankenhorn, 1995), I only push use the idea, not the titles, exact words. When putting a reference, the difference between a citation and a quotation is that for a quotation we always put a page number. This is done to enable the reader to check the words in the original context. Push Phd Thesis! In the list of references at the end of the text, there is no difference. Short quotations are included in the text, and enclosed by speech marks. Longer quotations are set apart from the main text by indenting the quotations, and usually putting in a slightly smaller font.
Longer means about 3 to 4 lines or more. Essays On Charles! For example: It is true that many voters may be voting for reasons wholly unconnected with social inequalities in any of the three dimensions. They may attach greater importance to some specific issue such as foreign affairs, or they may vote out of singh phd thesis personal reasons or habits with which egalitarianism has nothing to do. (Runciman, 1966, p.136) When quoting someone else, you should take great care to copy the words exactly. Sometimes, you might want to change a quote slightly in order to make it fit your essay. If these changes are substantial, you should use your own words and cite the afi thesis, work instead. If the changes are small, use square brackets to indicate that you have changed the text. For example, you might quote Rawls (1999, p.87) that intelligent people don’t “[deserve their] greater natural capacity”. I have included the words that I changed in square brackets, leaving the rest the same. This indicates to my readers that the push, words in square brackets are not the ocr salters chemistry mark scheme, exact same as Rawls used.
For reference, the original reads: “No one deserves his greater natural capacity” (p.87). I made the changes, because I wrote about intelligent people, and Rawls was talking in more general terms. Whilst quotations can lighten up an push singh essay, you should not rely on them too much. Your own writing is much more important, and often text you quote was written for a different purpose. The consequence is that the essays on charles darwin, quotations may be relevant in push singh phd thesis, content (what is being said), but in terms of style don’t fit well with what you wrote. If you rely too much on quotations, you run the english questions, risk that your readers will think that you maybe don’t really know what you’re writing about: that you have not understood the material well enough. When writing an essay, particularly when writing an extended essay, it’s easiest to put the references whilst you write. This is the case, because you still know where you got the idea from. I keep a place holder to push, remind myself that a reference is ocr salters chemistry a2 coursework mark scheme, needed if I can’t remember the author right away. Push Singh! Often, I will know at least some of writing it, and write this down. By putting a place holder rather than chasing the reference right away, I can stay focused on the writing.
However, I also indicate that the essay is not completed. Place holders like (Baudrillard, XXX) or (XXX last week’s reading) will help me find the full references once I completed the essay or section. References are needed whenever you write an academic piece of writing. Even where you can get away without referencing, by including references your essay will be taken more serious. It’s a good habit to put references all the time, so when you really need to—such as in your thesis—you’ll not struggle, or spend days trying to find out how to reference a chapter in a book. There are a number of software packages such as Endnote , Refworks , Scholar’s Aid Lite , or Bibus that help you putting references. These computer applications interact with your word processor, and automate much of the referencing process.
They manage citations, and usually let you search libraries and journal databases. Push Phd Thesis! Useful and flexible as they are, such software packages need some time to get used to. Titles! It’s thus a good idea to familiarize yourself with their working before the deadline is menacing. For example, make sure you know how to put page numbers for quotations. Even if you don’t use a dedicated computer program to manage your references, it might be useful to collect references in a separate file. Push! So, after completing your essay, copy all the references to a separate file.
The next time you cite the same paper, it’ll be a simple case of copying and pasting, without the work of formatting the reference. Keeping the full references with your notes can safe a great deal of time, too.

How to Write an push, Evaluation Paper with Sample Essays. VirginiaLynne has been a University English instructor for over 20 years. She specializes in helping people write essays faster and benjamin franklin autobiography essay, easier. Evaluation essays are just like reviews. They judge whether something is good or bad, better or worse than something comparable. We are familiar with this sort of phd thesis writing if we've read book, movie, restaurant, or product reviews. Essays On Charles Darwin! Evaluation papers can be serious or funny, earnest or sarcastic. Push Singh! We all love to read the review of a really bad movie or restaurant experience.
If you like to write satire, this can be a great opportunity to display your humor. Chances are you will have a great time, and so will your reader. Your topic can be something you've experienced once or many times. Keep in mind that you will write a better paper if you: Have a strong opinion—positive or negative—about this topic. Choose something you've experienced recently or that you can review again before you write your paper. Know a lot about this type of chemistry experience. Use the following list of categories to brainstorm ideas for what you might want to evaluate. Finding Criteria for Evaluation Essays.
To turn your opinion into an evaluation, you will need to use criteria to push singh phd thesis judge your subject. On Charles! What are criteria? Criteria are the parts of your topic that you will judge as good or bad, better or worse than something else. How can you find criteria? Criteria are the parts of the singh phd thesis thing you are evaluating. Here are some examples of criteria: movie criteria : plot, actors, scenery, score, directing, chemistry between actors, humor. restaurant criteria: service, atmosphere, food quality, taste, value, price. website criteria: ease of navigation, design, visuals, writing, content. Finding the best criteria for your evaluation: In order to do this kind of franklin essay writing well, you need to determine what sort of a topic you are evaluating. Push Singh! If it is a movie, then what genre is it: horror, romance, drama, etc.? Then you need to decide what would make an excellent movie in that genre in your opinion. For example, you may decide that a good romantic comedy has to afi thesis 2012 have three things: humor, surprising plot twists, and actors you enjoy getting to know.
Next, you will evaluate the movie you have chosen to see how well it matches those criteria, giving specific examples of how it does or does not fulfill your expectations of an excellent romantic comedy. In order to push singh evaluate something, you need to compare it with the best example of that particular thing. So, to help you develop your topic into an essay, there are two important questions to ask when you are choosing your topic to evaluate: First question: What category of a thing is it? Second question: What is the ideal example of something in that category? What category is it?
For the benjamin franklin questions best evaluation essay, you want to compare your topic with things that are very similar, so try to singh phd thesis narrow the showcase 2012 category as much as possible. To get there, you want to keep on asking the question, What kind is it? What category does McDonald's fit into? Answer to first question : Restaurant. (What kind of restaurant?) Fast food restaurant. (Better, but what kind of push singh fast food?) Hamburger-serving fast food restaurant. (This is what you want!) So if you were evaluating McDonald's, you would want to ocr salters scheme compare it to other fast food restaurants that mostly serve hamburgers.
Now the singh second question: What is the ideal example of something in that category? What makes that example better than others? Thinking about what you consider to be the very best example of something in the category of what you are reviewing can help you decide what criteria you will use, and also what judgement you can make. For example, here is mfa creative writing a list of criteria my students have come up with for an ideal burger fast food restaurant: looks clean serves food fast makes it easy to push singh phd thesis order has great fries has options on the menu offers large drinks with free refills serves juicy burgers with lots of grease doesn't cost a lot of money.
No two people will come up with exactly the same list, but most restaurant reviews look at the following criteria: Answer to second question: A great fast food burger joint offers great service, atmosphere, and food at a fair cost. Now you know what your paper is going to phd thesis titles be about how close McDonald's comes to this ideal. Is This an Effective Advertisement? Using the list of criteria above, we can make a very fast outline for push an essay about an imaginary fast food hamburger restaurant called Bob's Burgers: Thesis Statement : While you may have to wait a while to get your meal at Bob's Burgers, that is because everyone finds the meal is worth the wait; Bob's Burgers offers not only showcase, great service, but a fun atmosphere for eating with friends or family, terrific food, and a good value for push the price.
Topic sentence for paragraph 1: Service : Bobs Burgers offers great service that makes you feel at home. Food served quickly Easy to order Friendly Not pushy They get the order correct. Topic sentence for paragraph 2: Atmosphere : Walking into phd thesis, Bob's, you know you will enjoy eating there. Looks clean Attractive colors Interesting pictures or other decorations Comfortable tables and chairs. Topic sentence for paragraph 3: Food: Most importantly, Bob's burgers are the best in town. Juicy burgers with lots of grease Many choices for toppings, including grilled onions, mushrooms, and singh, peppers Small or large burgers Have great fries One downside: No options for those who don't like burgers.
Topic sentence for paragraph 4: Value : While Bob's doesn't have the cheapest meals, they do offer a good value for the price. Quality ingredients Burgers and essays darwin, fries fill you up Toppings on burgers are free Large drinks with free refills. Using this quick outline, most of you could probably write your own essay on singh Bob's or another fast food hamburger joint pretty easily. Comparison/Contrast: Evaluate your subject by comparing it to one of the best of that genre (use something everyone would know to save time). You will not do an extended comparison, but just use the comparison as a lead-off into your own judgment. Darwin! Expectations Unfulfilled: This is especially easy to do for this essay type. Use the intro to push phd thesis describe what you were anticipating before seeing the titles subject, then describe how the subject was either better or worse than you expected. Frame : Use a description of the subject to frame the essay.
That way you get right into phd thesis, the action. Then break off half-way through to showcase keep your reader in suspense. Give your evaluation and singh phd thesis, then conclude with the end of your frame. Low Residency Mfa Creative Writing! Define Genre and Compare: In this essay, you would start out by describing the push singh typical expectations of whatever subject you have (ex: rock album, romantic movie, baseball game, jazz club). After describing the “typical,” you will then tell how your subject either exemplifies the genre or deviates from the low residency norm.
Probably this type of organization is singh best used for a satire or for a subject that deliberately tries to break out of the normal expectations of that genre. Analysis by Criteria: In this type of paper, you introduce the subject, tell why you are evaluating it, what the competition is, and how you gathered your data. Then you order your criteria chronologically, spatially, or in order of importance. Chronological Order : You might use this for all or part of your paper. It means telling what happened in the order it happened. This is particularly useful for a performance or restaurant review. Causal Analysis: This measures the effect on benjamin autobiography the audience. How does this subject cause a certain effect? Analysis Focused on singh phd thesis the Visual: This organization plan works well for analyzing works of art and pictures. Showcase 2012! The analysis focuses on composition, arrangement, focus, foreground and background, symbols, cultural references, and key features of that visual genre.
It also notices the tools of the phd thesis artist: color, shape, texture, pattern, and media. This paper analyzes these details in order to explain how they are related to the cultural and low residency mfa creative europe, historical context of the work of art and then tells how they relate to push phd thesis the overall meaning of the piece. Titles! Be sure to evaluate if and why this piece is effective or ineffective. Analysis Focused on phd thesis the Social Context or the Story : This type of evaluation takes an image and essay questions, analyzes how it is effective for a particular point. Usually, the image is about a controversial or emotionally charged cultural or historical event. Your analysis can describe how this image either demonstrates or contributes to the emotion or debate surrounding the event. Singh Phd Thesis! It may be that the image is ironic or misleading. The only english essay questions, problem with our example above is singh phd thesis that it is so easy to write, and english questions, so it might seem rather trite and push singh phd thesis, unoriginal.
