Writing introductions to discussion essays. This is in response to a highly intelligent thread started in the forum by one of the scholarship essay spaced readers of this site. Are there particular skills you need for writing introductions to discussion essays? Here is my response! The basics of an IELTS essay introduction. The place to start is to remember what the basics of an real essays IELTS essay introduction are.

These, I will stress, are guidelines not rules – there is always more than one way to do it: keep if brief: it is just the scholarship essay double spaced introduction, you want to spend most of your time on the main body paragraphs. I’d suggest you aim for 3 sentences, but in some cases 2 or 4 sentences can work. Writing! I personally HATE one sentence introductions. keep it clear : it is really important that the examiner knows what your essay will be about double spaced after she/he has read your introduction. Real Essays! Don’t try and be clever. Think clearly and aim to let the examiner know what you want say. Think is the important word in that sentence.

identify the task : all IELTS essay questions ask you to write in a particular way: this is the task. Examples of this are “Say whether you agree or disagree about x”, or “Say what the scholarship essay causes of y are”. For me, it is really important to put this in the intro because if you don’t your essay may not answer the question. Excerpt! A huge mistake. identify your point of spaced, view : this is what some teachers call “thesis statement”. I don’t. The idea is that what you think should be clear throughout the essay.

That means you want to real essays give your answer in essay spaced the introduction and not just the conclusion. Is writing introductions to headshot size resume discussion essays special? I don’t think so. I know lots of candidates and scholarship essay double spaced teachers like to categorise essays. Personally, I’m not sure that this is argumentative and discursive essay writing necessary. Better I think to have one set of guidelines and answer the scholarship essay double question in front of you. Much simpler that way.

It is also much more likely to get you a good score. There are no marks for graduate papers clue writing a “discussion essay”, there are only marks for answering the question. So focus on that. Please avoid “In this essay I will discuss” This is something I personally hate.

Much more importantly, it is an example of scholarship, tired language that almost all IELTS examiners hate too – they want to student see you use your own words and not “learned language” . Spaced! I will show you some examples of how to student essays do this below. Top tip – learn to write different introductions. A lot of IELTS essays go wrong because students try to scholarship write a particular type of essay that they have practised before. Then they get a question in the test that doesn’t quite fit the model. They try to repeat a form of essay they have learned and fail to answer the question. To avoid this it really helps to learn different ways of doing the same thing. Learn how to write introductions that are two and three sentences long.

Two examples of good, introductions to discussion essays. This is the original task posted by Rohit, read my intro: Some people think that the teenage years are the happiest times of most people’s lives. Scholarship Double Spaced! Others think that adult life brings more happiness, in writing spite of greater responsibilities. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. There are different views about spaced whether people are happier as teenagers or in adulthood. While there is something to be said for the idea that the teenage years can be extremely happy, my view is that most people achieve greater satisfaction later in argumentative and discursive life when they have a career and a family of double, their own. This is only two sentences long. that can be fine. Graduate Papers Clue! There are very few rules remember. Scholarship Double Spaced! I clearly identify the resume task.

My point of view is clear too – I also show that I will be talking about the family and scholarship essay careers too. Neat. Elie Wiesel! Note how I use while to connect the two different views I need to discuss. Excellent for your grammar and scholarship helpful for this task. The logical structure of the essay will be one para about how childhood can be best and another about the joys of being 40! Then when I write my conclusion I simply come back to my intro.

This is a slightly more complex question, but asked in the same way: There is an increasing shortage of housing in many countries. Some people believe that governments should build more housing in the countryside, while others believe that this would damage the natural environment. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Most people would accept that some action needs to be taken about the chronic housing shortage that is good for it threatening so many countries around the world. Scholarship Essay Double! One logical solution to this problem would be to essays create more housing in the countryside which is relatively underpopulated.

My view, however , is that this would lead to serious damage to the environment and alternative options need to be found. See how this introduction is three sentences long. It is still clear and simple though. This is the situation. Here is essay a solution. This is what I think about the solution.

I am still discussing both view and giving my opinion. Just in a different way. See how I link the different part of my introduction together with this and however. You want to make sure that your introduction is well-written. Don’t write too quickly.

Just like the previous introduction, I Identify the task and argumentative writing I clearly state my view. I am not afraid to use personal opinion language – indeed I really need to because the question asks me what I think. If you like you can leave me an introduction as a comment to this lesson. The alternative is to scholarship essay double spaced pop into the forum and post there. Real Student! Actually, I’d prefer that as that would allow you to scholarship double share your language and ideas better. If you follow my advice, you will: write 2/3 introductions – don’t bother with the whole essay – focussing on essay a skill is better for learning write different types of introduction – this will help in the test – you can’t predict the scholarship essay double spaced question you will have. More advice on IELTS task 2 writing.

If you like this lesson, why not share it? Get more help with IELTS preparation on the main pages of my site. Keep up with me on Facebook - all the elie thesis updates and even more advice there. Or just get all my free lessons by email. 21 Responses to Writing introductions to discussion essays. Thanks Dominic for the wonderful lesson! Earlier, I always tried to categorize the essay questions and focused on using different learned languages from internet.

Now, after this lesson I start thinking in different direction. I really feel easier and more confident now to answer the double spaced essay question which satisfy the task response. I hope I can satisfy the examiner now completely from the Task Response point of view. However, I believe much practice is still required to stay on the task response through all parts of the essay. Excellent. I hope it works for you.

Different things do work for different people. I’m not wholly against categorising different types of essay, questions and I know it does work for some people. I’m not sure if this makes sense but I think the best way ahead is to see that there are different types of question, practise thinking and scholarship writing about those types of questions but concentrate on using good essays writing skills. I do have another – rather old – lesson on this that I need to review. I’ll try and essay excerpt post again on scholarship essay this in the near future.

Hi Dominic, I just learned about your website today and I am very impressed with the graduate papers contents and techniques. I am planning to write my IELTS on May 10th for the first time. I got 95 in double spaced my TOEFL last December with 23 in reading. My weakness is real student essays also writing. I am familiar with writing hospital charts and reports but seems to having difficulty with IELTS/TOEFL writing. I am hoping to learn more from your site to essay spaced score at least 7. Thanks again. Best of luck.

Do let me know how it goes. I guess you’re a doctor – a breed I know well being married to one – that may be the problem in writing. What I mean is that you may just be too academic/intelligent for IELTS. Essay! In a way, you need to forget academic training and go back to school. If you learn to keep it simple, then progress may be faster. hi dear Dominic, i receive your website address from scholarship double dr Andalibi. i found it something. here i wrote an introductory for that topic: There is an inseparable part of our life, unforgettable memories, lots of energy; I mean teenage times. sometimes it is jumping step for our adulthood or prevent us for our goals. I am looking forward to your reply. Problems I’m afraid.

My best advice in this case is to keep your language simpler. Say what the student issue is and then say what you think about it. Also a major problem is that you are not really writing in scholarship sentences. Hi Dear Dominic, Last few days, i have been spending most of my free time trying to find the an thesis answer “how to write essay” ” where to find the scholarship essay ideas” etc. for IELTS test as i am finding very hard the writing tasks of IELTS.

I don’t even know where to real student start. I read dozens of iELTS writing task samples but every time i sat down to write, nothing comes to my mind. I am very happy that i found your website as you find time and effort to answer every question. Please, Help! Where should i start? What it would be the first step to write a successful essay. I really do hope for your answer. Thank you very much.

Can I direct you to this lesson? and this may help too. If in doubt, just look for the search box at the top left of the essay double spaced site. There are around 600 lessons here. Sometimes not easy to find – the site is so big nowadays. i hope my better answer simple ist easy. Why the hate for ‘In this essay I will discuss…’ sentences? I often encourage my students to papers crossword introduce their essay using a similar structure to ‘The following essay will…’ or ‘The purpose of this essay is…’, as that’s a very common feature of abstracts and introductions in (English language) academia, at scholarship spaced, the level of student essays and also in resume academic journals. It may be formulaic but the whole structure of a 3-part essay is formulaic isn’t it?

I’d welcome your comments on this. Apologies for the late reply but I’ve only just found this. I do say it’s a personal opinion! To expand on the reason I state above it’s a formula that I believe is overused especially in scholarship double IELTS. 1. IELTS essays are not “academic essays” by any means, rather they are English language test essays. It seems slightly bonkers to introduce the thesis language of academic papers into this format. More to double spaced the point if you do, then you should consistently use that level of good, language throughout the essay. 2. It is very often wrongly used. i.e. The formula doesn’t fit the question. 3. By using this formula students very frequently fail to outline their position in scholarship essay spaced the introduction. Most examiners I know look for headshot size a clear statement of the writer’s position in the intro – there is justification for essay this in the examining criteria. if you use this language, then that position is often unclear or resolves down to a unsatisfactory “I’m going to talk about”.

4. Night Wiesel! I dislike this kind of formulaic approach. The best essays are almost never formulaic – they address the essay double question directly. And Discursive Essay! My experience of double, IELTS candidates is argumentative and discursive essay that the more they tend towards a formula the scholarship spaced less they engage with the question. The formula can ensure they maintain a certain standard but progress stops. I have tried using your tips. Could you please comment on my introduction. Thank you. “There are different views whether everyone has the rights to headshot size resume enter a university or college program regardless their academic abilities. While other people think that this is not possible and only suitable candidates should be allowed to. In my point of view, higher level education may not be suitable for everyone when there are possibly better pathways for them.” Hi Dominic Cole.

I am from scholarship essay spaced Hong Kong; I am looking for tips for my promotion writing examination and elie here I have found your site. Hello Dominic, thanks for such a great web site, please, would you mind to check my intro ? ” successful sports professionals can earn a great deal more money than people in scholarship essay other important professions. Some people think this is fully justified while others think it is resume unfair” The view that sports professionals receive an income higher than other careers has generated controversy.

While there are those who say this is fairly fair, I shall argue that there are strong reasons why state should regulate this situation. Please evaluate the below introduction paragraph for the housing topic mentioned above: Due to proliferation of scholarship essay double spaced, population, there is a deficiency of homes in good many countries. Some people are expecting from the government to construct homes in the countryside which would lead to serious damage to the environment. Instead, my view is that government should build the essay double spaced multistorey apartments to accomodate people in papers the cities. Sorry I simply don’t have the time to look at individual answers.

But thank you for posting I’m sure others can learn from this. Could you please help me check my introduction? Thanks in advance, Topic: There is an increasing shortage of housing in many countries. Essay Double Spaced! Some people believe that governments should build more housing in the countryside, while others believe that this would damage the natural environment. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. In the contemporary world these day, the lack of accommodation is a global issue. While some people hold the view that the authorities can tackle this problem by constructing more housing in suburb, as far as I am concern, this solution will play havoc with the environment with serious damage. Sorry I simply don’t have the time to look at individual answers.

But thank you for for it posting I’m sure others can learn from this. hi diminic,i found ur website realy helpful. hers my intro fo hapines task. there are different views regarding the age when people feel happier themselves either childhood or adulthood. While i accept that people are more satisfied at their achieving age say in essay spaced adulhood.I ,however, holds the night wiesel thesis opinion that people found themselves more happy at young age ,being free of responsibilities and stresses of life. intro fo house shortage snerio. This type of smog was marked in London in 1952 where the smog prevailed for spaced, five days killing few thousands. The pollution was caused due to sulphur dioxide (SO 2 ) and graduate papers crossword clue, smoke during temperature inversion. The effects were more severe in essay double morning hours and became deadly after sunrise because of photochemical oxidation. The smog caused bronchitis, pneumonia, respiratory distress, and eye diseases. Since it is a mixture of graduate, reducing pollutants, it is scholarship double spaced, also known as reducing smog. 2. Los Angeles Smog: Such type of cite essay excerpt, smog was recorded at Los Angeles in essay double 1944 and thereafter it#8217;s known as Los Angeles smog. It is a type of photo-chemical smog. Essays? The smog contains different compounds at different times of scholarship double spaced, a day. In the morning, when nitric oxide (MO) is discharged from automobile exhausts build up and react with oxygen to form nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) which is a yellowish brown gas with pungent and chocking odour. Since MO 2 gas produces a characteristic brown haze, the real essays cities where this type of smog predominates, are called brown air cities.

As the scholarship essay spaced sun rises, the UV-rays cause a rapid conversion of elie wiesel, NO 2 to MO and nascent oxygen atom. The peak is essay, obtained in- between 10 A.M., and 4.00 P.M. Headshot Size? The nascent oxygen atoms react with oxygen molecules of air to give Ozone (O 3 ), the concentration of which is maximum at scholarship essay, around 10 A.M. The other highly reactive chemical forms are hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), hydroxy radicals (OH) etc. The presence of oxides of essay, nitrogen in scholarship double the environment induces the formation of other potent species like ozone (O 3 ), hydrogen. Peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), hydroxyl radical (HO + ), carbony radical (R CO + ), acetly peroxy radical (CH 3 COOO) + etc. The smog brings about for it a disaster in the living world possibly through the species like ozone, H 2 O 2 , hydroxyl radicals ( + OH), acetyl peroxy radicals, peroxy acyl nitrate (PAN), hydroperoxy radical etc.

The accumulation of oxides of nitrogen in the environment induces the formation of other potent species as per the given mechanism. NO 2 hv (traction) > NO + O. R- CO + + O 2 >R-CO O- O + (Acyl peroxy radical) R- CO – O –O + + NO 2 > R- COO – NO 2 (Peroxy acyI nitrate) The formation of smog is highly destructive and influences both the physiological and metabolic activities of living organisms#8217; some important effects of smog are discussed as given below: 1. The presence of ozone, PANs and aldehydes in essay double smog lead to eye irritation and affects respiratory tracts and cite excerpt, throat. 2. The presence of NO 2 in smog causes nose and eye irritation and chronic diseases in lungs and heart. 3. The presence of PANs in smog causes extensive agricultural and forestry damage, such as damage to leave and stomatal tissues. 4. PANs cause dizziness and headache in man. 5. Smog includes early maturity of scholarship spaced, plants and hence induces senescence and reduces rate of photosynthesis. 6. Smog damages metals, paper, rubber and fabrics.

7. The particulate matters in smog induce lung cancer. 8. Ozone decolourises the paintings. The following are the methods to real student, control smog: 1. The production of essay spaced, nitrogen oxide (NO x ) and good, hydro-carbon should be controlled which checks the production of scholarship double spaced, ozone and PANs. 2. The process like incineration, absorption, adsorption and condensation should be employed to reduce the different harmful constituents of smog such as oxide of argumentative and discursive writing, sulphur and nitrogen, hydrocarbon, carbon-monoxide, dust etc. Now-a-days, one of the major consequences of environmental pollution is the acid rain. It has become serious threat to water bodies like ponds, rivers, lakes and reservoirs and also to scholarship spaced, the terrestrial eco-systems like grasslands and forests. Acid rain may be defined as any precipitation such as rain, fog, mist or snow etc. which is more acidic than the normal i.e. having a lower pH than that of normal rain water. Normal rain water means rainfall in absence of any major pollutants in air. The normal rain water is also slightly acidic (pH approximately 5.6) because the basal level of CO 2 gas present in excerpt the air can also be solubilised in essay double rain water giving carbonic acid (H 2 CO 3 ), weak acid. However, when the atmospheric air is and discursive essay, highly polluted containing the major pollutants like oxides of sulphur and nitrogen and halogen radicals, these pollutants react with water vapours or rain droplets to scholarship essay spaced, form different types of headshot, strong acids like sulphuric acid (H 2 SO 4 ), nitric acid (HNO 3 ) and hydrochloric acid (HC1) which have grave environmental impact. Hence, acid rain means the presence of excessive strong acids in rain water which lowers the pH of water from normal.

The term acid rain was first referred by Robert Angus in 1872. It has become a serious problem in most of the industrialised countries like U.S.A., U.K., Germany, Norway, Sweden, Russia, Canada, etc. In India, it is also known that acid rain is destroying the greatest monument Taj Mahal in Agra. Here, the acid rain is caused due to Mathura Oil Refinery, an industry discharging a number of poisonous gases into the atmosphere. Acid rain is due to the presence of essay spaced, various pollutants like oxides of nitrogen, oxides of sulphur and halogen radicals or molecules in the atmosphere. These pollutants are discharged into the atmosphere by good for it several natural processes and human activities. Natural phenomena like volcanic eruptions, forest fires, lightening, burning of fossil fuel, decomposition of spaced, organic matters etc release large quantities of these pollutants into the atmosphere. Human activities like burning of fuels, automobile exhausts, industries and smelting plants, thermal power plants, petroleum refineries etc. release large quantities of these pollutants into the atmosphere. After the release of the pollutants (oxides of sulphur and nitrogen and halogens) into the atmosphere, these can travel thousands of kilometres. The longer these stay in the atmosphere, the more likely these are to be oxidized into cite essay excerpt, acids. The conversion of the pollutants into their corresponding acids are shown in the.

Equations given below: (a) Formation of Nitrogenous acids: (b) Formation of Sulphuric acid: (c) Formation of Hydrochloric acid: (d) Formation of scholarship double spaced, carbon acid: All these acids with naturally occurring carbonic acid (H 2 CO 3 ) form acid rain with rain water and pH falls to 4,0, at times the headshot size resume pH can also fall to 2.0. The concentration of these acids as well as the quantity of scholarship spaced, water in which the acids are dissolved determines the pH of rain water. Heavy rains are usually less acidic as there is relatively more water. On the other hand, fogs and mists are more acidic as the acid molecules are dissolved in relatively little water. Acid rains create complex problems and their imports are far reaching. Some major impacts of acid rain on the eco-system are discussed below: 1. Acid rain increases the student soil acidity affecting land flora and fauna. 2. It causes acidification of aquatic bodies which leads to the killing of aquatic plants and animals.

The increase in scholarship essay acidity also affects the metabolism, growth and development of aquatic organisms. 3. It induces senescence of plants thereby reducing the productivity of the eco-system. 4. It leaches various metals such as aluminum, zinc, copper, manganese, cadmium, lead etc. from the soil into aquatic bodies. When the concentration of these metals (in soluble form) increases beyond the safe limit, it affects development and leads to the death of many aquatic organisms in general and fishes in particular. 5. Good? It corrodes buildings, monuments, statues, bridges, fences, railings etc. 6. Acid rain affected plants and double, animals are easily attacked by pathogens. 7. Diseases caused by bacteria and pathogens can be spread by acid rain water. 8. Acid rain may cause respiratory and skin diseases.

Some important air pollution disasters are given in graduate papers clue Table 7.8. Acid rain can only be controlled by managing the source of pollution. Several control methods are adopted to manage acid rain. Scholarship Essay? Some important control measures are as discussed below: 1. The aquatic bodies and farmlands should be periodically limed to student, neutralise the acidity due to acid rain. 2. Essay Double Spaced? The fuels, devoid of sulphur or having low sulphur amount should be used to minimise the quantity of sulphur dioxide gas in the atmosphere. 3. The leakage of chlorine or its discharge should be stopped. Night Elie Wiesel Thesis? 4. The vehicular exhaust should be minimised by using control valves in the outlet of the exhaust pipeline of the automobiles. 5. The scrubbers should be used to reduce the emission of SO 2 during coal burning. 6. SO 2 gas released is essay double, sprayed with water containing lime which precipitates SO 2 as calcium sulphate (CaSO 4 ). 7. General public awareness should be created regarding the ill effects of real, environmental pollution and spaced, consequences of acid rain.

In view of the above detrimental impacts of writing, air pollution on mankind, plants and vegetation, we have to adopt some control measures in order to reduce the level of air pollutants in environment. Some important control measures are as follows: (i) Pollution from domestic fire should be controlled to double spaced, the house holder#8217;s use. Alternative methods of the fuels like smokeless chullah should be used in order to increase the fuel efficiency and reduce the emission of solid particulates. (ii) Welled air house with high chimneys and scattered dwellings can reduce the problem of air pollution. (iii) As the plants absorb mainly air polluting gases like CO 2 , there should be massive afforestation programme in industrial areas and thesis, big cities. (iv) Setting of scholarship essay, air quality standard for protection of environment and human health is argumentative essay writing, highly essential. Ventilation and scholarship essay, air-conditioning should be introduced. (v) Particulate emissions should be controlled in a gravity settling chamber, cyclone collector, cyclonic separator, filter, scrubbers and electrostatic precipitator. (vi) More and more flyovers, bridges, bylanes, footpaths for pedestrians, steamers and ferry launches and other modes of navigational metropolitans public transport systems should be developed with a view to minimize the usage of individual auto vehicles and thereby smoke emissions. This will ultimately lead to ecological and environmental preservation. (vii) More and more diesel multiple unit trains (DMU Trains) should be introduced in town area so that the people#8217;s dependency on the individual and public road transport may be minimized. (viii) Environmental education and awareness programmes need to be institutionalized by incorporating these in the essential activities of educational institutions. (ix) Use of unleaded petrol and diesel should be made compulsory. (x) Adequate legislation (Air Act) should be enacted to compel to control air pollution.

Severe punishment should be specified to the defaulters. (xi) The use and real student, production of CFCs should be banned with suitable substitute in order to check air pollution. (xii) The fuels devoid of sulphur or having low quantity of sulphur should be used to minimize the amount of sulphur dioxide gas in the atmosphere thereby reducing acid rain. (xiii) The production of Nitrogen Oxide (NO x ) and hydrocarbons should be controlled which will minimize the generation of ozone and PANs thereby declining smog formation. (xiv) The vehicular exhaust should be minimised by using control valves in the outlets of the exhaust pipeline of the automobile. Air quality shows a combination of the physical and chemical characteristics which makes air, an important resource for better existence of scholarship, all living organisms including man. The physical characteristics are described by factors like temperature, density, moisture content and air movement in the troposphere. The chemical characteristics include the concentration of different gases and pollutants. Mainly the natural processes are responsible in altering the physical characteristics whereas changes in chemical characteristics are due to anthropogenic activities.

The emissions from cite automobiles, industries, agricultural processes etc. Double Spaced? add a number of obnoxious gases which adversely affect the air quality and render it unfit for living organisms on earth. It is, therefore, necessary to argumentative essay, know to what extent the pollutant present in air can result in a situation in which the latter can be termed as polluted. The Pollution (Prevention and Control) Boards, of different countries have fixed standards for ambient air quality (in India under Air Act 1981) beyond which an scholarship ambient air can be considered as polluted. In India, the night Air Act 1981 prescribes emission standards for many industries. Scholarship Spaced? Thus, air quality standards is a limit on the amounts of a given pollutant permitted in the air around us and emission standard signifies the maximum amount of pollutants those can discharged from a specific point source. Till recently, limited, attention has been focused on vehicular pollution control in India.

The environment (Protection) Act, 1986 puts the responsibility of laying standards for vehicular emission to the Central and State pollution Control Boards so that standards can be incorporated in motor vehicle Acts and Rules. The ambient air quality standards of different primary pollutants are shown in Table 7.9. The governments of many countries have their legal standards for ambient air quality. The purpose of these standards is to reduce the headshot size resume pollutants to a certain level which would avoid undesirable effects. The prescribed standards may vary slightly from scholarship spaced country to country depending upon their meteorological and geographical features and the population density.
