Sony's BDP-S300 Blu-ray Disc (BD) Player delivers admirable picture and statement gps, sound quality, and, as with many BD players, it can upconvert regular DVD movies to 1080p format. It can also play back multimedia files recorded onto relatively spacious (and inexpensive) DVD media. As a budget BD player, though, it lacks support for the latest Blu-ray features, such as picture-in-picture and online services, and term theft, it's sluggish when loading some of the newest BD titles. But ease of use and a strong selection of configuration options make it a compelling choice for statement gps anyone in search of term paper on identity basic Blu-ray enjoyment.

Attractively styled, the gps matte-black chassis measures 3.1 by 16.9 by 14.8 inches (HWD) and weighs 10 pounds. Indicator lights and essay history of gospel, a multifunction display lie behind a strip of blue-tinted clear acrylic across the lower half of the thesis statement gps faceplate. Power and disc-eject buttons, embedded at each end of a dark, metallic strip along the top front edge of the player, are easy to access. Research Paper On Child Obesity. Five small buttons near the thesis top right of the device supply basic playback functions. The narrow, baton-style shape of the remote control is comfortable to grab, with ridges and a notched finger-hold on the back. My thumb landed naturally on the four-way directional pad, which has disc playback buttons positioned within easy reach immediately below. Term Theft. You can program basic TV controls using codes provided in the manual. Dedicated buttons let you dim the player's front-panel display and select the format for video output.

The player's HDMI output supports up to statement, 1080p60, and for BD movies only (not for upconverted DVD video), 1080p24 video. Essay About Christmas Vacation. The component video HD output supports up to thesis statement, 1080i with BD titles and up to 480p with most DVD videos. Admissions. A video output-format option called source direct matches the player output to the native format of the gps source material#x2014;useful for HDTV setups that incorporate an business resume tips external video processor. The S300 also provides a selection of optimized video output presets similar to statement gps, vivid, theater, and others that most HDTVs offer. The setup menu also has custom picture-quality controls. Audio port selection includes coaxial and a high, optical digital output as well as stereo and thesis gps, 5.1-channel analog. The S300 doesn't support HDMI bitstream output of Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD tracks, but the term on identity player can decode these and other popular audio formats to Linear PCM (LPCM) at gps up to 7.1 channels for christmas vacation a practically identical listening experience. Prior to testing the statement gps player, I visited the Sony Web site and downloaded the latest firmware update (version 3.80). The player's lack of an Ethernet connector, USB port, or memory card reader requires you to burn firmware updates to a recordable disc; to apply the updates, you insert the disc into business resume the player. A check of the thesis player's video output levels confirmed that it delivers a full-range response#x2014;unlike the , which crushed dark detail and clipped bright detail during HDMI output. My DVD video test clips from popular 24-fps film-sourced material were detected properly and promptly, ensuring a detailed picture with no distracting artifacts.

But when I performed film-detail tests using the HQV Benchmark DVD and Microsoft Windows DVD Test Annex 3.0, I discovered that the essay of gospel Sony BDP-S300 couldn't properly detect and process film-sourced material that had nonstandard metadata. With most DVD movies that the statement gps player upscales, viewers are unlikely to see any obvious errors, but the odd title may occasionally exhibit flicker or jagged-edge artifacts. Advanced video processors in BD players such as the and the handle such material with ease. The BDP-S300's performance with 1080i video was similar to that of the essay on the history Sharp BD-HP20U#x2014;poor, in thesis statement gps that it failed all my deinterlacing tests, indicating a loss of up to half the potential detail in the video picture. But since the encoding format for most BD movies is mri thesis 1080p (progressive), the lack of effective HD deinterlacing abilities won't be a deal breaker for most people. Unfortunately, the two players share another characteristic: sluggish disc load times, particularly with BD movies. For six BD titles, the thesis BDP-S300 averaged 64 seconds per disc, and the Sharp BD-HP20U was slightly slower at 67 seconds per disc. By contrast, on term paper the same titles, the averaged 33 seconds#x2014;about twice as fast. The time from power-up to tray-open for the BDP-S300 is the slowest I've seen, at 47 seconds. The player is gps sluggish even when generating thumbnails of resume images recorded on DVD media.

And BD titles that take advantage of Java-based interactive features, including advanced menu systems, were especially tough: The player operated at a stuttering crawl. This isn't good news, since new BD releases seem to be adding an gps ever-increasing number of Java-based features. On the essay christmas vacation bright side, like most stand-alone disc players I've tested recently, this one is very energy efficient: Monthly power cost, based on 8 hours of daily operation at .13 per thesis gps, kWh (the local average), is research obesity a minuscule .81. The Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray Disc player provides a quality viewing experience and thesis statement gps, useful multimedia features, and it will be Sony's least expensive stand-alone BD player for some time. But while the savings may please your pocket, they might also test your patience. Paper On Child Obesity. Benchmark Test Results. Passes below black video (HDMI): yes. Passes above peak white video (HDMI): yes. HQV DVD Benchmark score: 20 (out of 130) HD HQV Benchmark score: 10 (out of 100) More Hi-Def Player Reviews: The Sony BDP-S300 full-function or Universal remote control to operate varios devices and you can program the statement remote control to operate most of the popular brands of term paper on identity theft audio/video equipment like a TV, a DVD player (or VCR), or a Network satellite receiver. See Programming for Other Equipment on This remote control may have features not used by your receiver.

This guide makes it easy to set up and use your remote control this guide contains in-depth information to help you get the most from your remote control, including controlling other equipment like TVs, VCRs, and DVD players. Thesis Gps. If you press power button pointing to the device if it powers off then its already programmed and a high school admissions essay, do not need further programming. If the device is not responding check the batteries in the remote it may be that batteries are exhausted. Use the statement gps remote control's mode buttons to set the remote to research obesity, the correct mode for the equipment. Be sure to program the remote control to operate the statement other equipment as described on manual. To change the mode, press the button for the equipment you want to control.

The mode button lights for three seconds to show you've set the on the music remote to thesis gps, that mode. Depending on how the business tips remote is thesis set up, the resume remote control may use UHF radio signals, IR signals, or both to statement, control the receiver. However, only IR signals are used to control other equipment. IR signals travel short distances generally 20 feet or 7 meters they can go up to 40 feet, and vacation, cannot go through walls or other solid objects. Point the remote control directly at the equipment you want to control, with no objects to statement, block the signal path. This manual shows you how to program the remote control to operate a TV. The following section uses a different method to a high school essay, program the thesis statement gps remote control to operate a TV or other equipment (such as a DVD player or VCR, tuner, amplifier, audio receiver or a second TV).

You can program the remote control by either following the instructions in Programming Using Equipment Remote Code Tables, or the Scanning for Equipment Codes procedure. When programming the remote control to operate combination equipment, such as a TV/DVD or a TV/VCR, program the remote control in one mode, and then repeat the procedure in essay the other mode. For example, to program the thesis statement gps remote control to operate a TV/DVD player using code 765, follow the instructions to program the remote to operate the TV using codes, and then repeat the instructions for the DVD using the obesity same code. Gps. Put the remote in paper TV mode to statement, use TV functions, or DVD mode to use the DVD player (or VCR) functions. A good friend of mine was kind enough to drop by mri thesis and allow me to check out his new Sony (9) Blu-ray player.

You know me, check out turned into a five and gps, a half hour review. On The History Of Gospel. Sony#x2019;s BDP-S300 at 9 has sparked a fair amount of interest among those who have, thus far, remained on the sidelines of the hi-def disc battle. The player outputs at resolutions up to thesis gps, 1080p/24 and handles all of the essay christmas vacation commonly used lossless audio formats, HDMI 1.3 1.1 and thesis, supports x.v.color. Of course as with any other new piece of gear, we#x2019;re just as, if not more, interested in how the unit operates as much as its specifications. So let#x2019;s get at business resume tips it. The BDP-S300 is a bit slimmer than its predecessor (the BDP-S1) and the overall design is pleasing enough, with one notable exception.

Chalk it up to personal preference, an unwillingness to accept change or just downright stodginess, I don#x2019;t like function buttons on the top of equipment. The S300#x2019;s eject and thesis, power buttons are placed to topics, the left and right top-edge of the thesis statement gps unit#x2019;s front facade. I feel this was a mistake but the writing a high school admissions essay top edge does slope down a bit so while annoying (at least to me) it shouldn#x2019;t offer any real-world hurdles in day to day operation. The back panel of the statement gps player has the usual assortment of component, HDMI, composite and s-video connections but one interface in topics particular is notably absent. Entry level (most to be exact) Blu-ray players typically lack Ethernet connectivity so nothing new here in that regard but I have to scratch my head every time I spin a BD player around and thesis gps, see a feature that#x2019;s mandatory, even on the cheapest of HD DVD players, missing from its Blu-ray counterpart.

Here#x2019;s the thing that I#x2019;ve come to realize about interactivity and networking features on theft hi-def disc players, it isn#x2019;t about what you can/can#x2019;t do with them today, it#x2019;s about what you can/can#x2019;t do with them tomorrow. Even Blu-ray#x2019;s new minimum 1.1 profile slated to become mandatory after October 31st, only mandates 256mb of memory and a secondary video decoder, something that HD DVD players have had since day one, but I digress. It appears as if fully functional Ethernet connectivity will only be mandated with players conforming to gps, profile 2.0 aka BD-Live, at research on child the risk of beating a dead horse, no 2.0 compliant BD playback devices are currently available. It#x2019;s assumed that the thesis gps PS3 could achieve profile 2.0 compliance by means of a firmware update but this remains to be seen. Either way the BDP-S300 will no doubt receive firmware updates as well, we#x2019;ll just have to burn them to a CDR and term theft, or wait for official firmware updates by mail, directly from Sony. Setup and General Observations: One of the first things I encountered with this player was actually one of the best features/implementations I#x2019;ve seen on any HD disc player to statement gps, date and business, all I had to do was turn the player on. The player defaults to language and resolution settings on first boot, which of course would be quite advantageous to those with odd/unusual display settings. Nice touch, simple but nice. The player also did a good job at recognizing our display#x2019;s (JVC DLA-HD1) native resolution and adjusting its output accordingly.

Load times were on par with other current generation BD/HD disc players, about thesis statement gps, 18 seconds from a high admissions essay, open tray to video on-screen, not bad at all. The remote however leaves a bit to be desired. It#x2019;s not bad per say but the smallish buttons combined with the thesis gps fact it#x2019;s not back-lit doesn#x2019;t exactly make for an intuitive user experience in a darkened room, of course learning the term theft codes into thesis gps a back-lit universal remote will remedy this. Narrative About Christmas Vacation. HQV Benchmark Results: The BDP-S300 scored quite nicely with the standard definition HQV benchmark disc, not only thesis statement gps, did in pass most of the tests with flying colors it was able to lock onto on the history, the 3:2 film cadence test faster than many of the DVD and BD/HD players I#x2019;ve tested recently. Statement Gps. Image Quality: The display device for this review was a ISF calibrated JVC DLA-HD1 #x2013; 1080p projector with the writing a high school audio being handled by a Denon AVR-4806 paired with PSB G-Design towers, center and rears and statement gps, a PSB SubSeries 9 subwoofer. Right off the bat everyone in the room noticed the image quality from the S300, it#x2019;s always comforting when the results right out of the box are at mri thesis least on par with expectations, surpassing them is of course a nice bonus. The only SD DVD I had on hand was #x2018;Pirates of the thesis gps Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl#x2019; (pulled specifically to compare to the BD version). As an SD DVD player the BDP-S300 appeared to perform quite capably, surprisingly well as a matter of fact. I#x2019;ve always found this disc to be mediocre at best and just plain bad at resume worst, in all honesty much of what we viewed looked quite nice. Perhaps the disc wasn#x2019;t quite as bad as I#x2019;d first thought.

Moving on to some BD playback, it didn#x2019;t take long to start noticing something that I#x2019;ve long suspected about the PS3. (In my opinion, at least for the foreseeable future, all BD playback comparisons should at thesis statement gps least include some cursory comparison of the PS3 as it#x2019;s undeniably the most used BD playback device in service.) While the PS3 is indeed a #x201C;good#x201D; Blu-ray player, it isn#x2019;t necessarily the end all in BD playback. I quickly noticed scenes in several discs that I had previously written off as mediocre or worse, suddenly having a tad more detail and sharpness. Essay Of Gospel Music. After setting the unit up and taking a few minutes to get an thesis statement gps overall feel for its performance we broke for lunch and grabbed a few BD#x2019;s on the way back. (My BD collection needed freshening up.) I picked up #x2018;Pirates of the writing a high school admissions Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl#x2019; while the BDP-S300#x2019;s owner opted for #x2018;Hellboy#x2019;. Back from lunch we watched a bit of Hellboy, which looked excellent sans a bit of macro-blocking in thesis several of the scenes with explosions, overall however the essay image was quite nice. It actually made me want to finish the film which is more than I can say for previous viewings. Moving on thesis statement to #x2018;Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the mri thesis Black Pearl#x2019; however wasn#x2019;t without incident.

The player struggled loading the disc for what seemed to be an eternity, followed by yet another loading screen (presumably for the discs advanced Java menus and animations). Needless to say actually navigating the thesis disc was also a chore, no doubt a firmware update could and likely will remedy the player#x2019;s sluggishness. I just hope that fix is already in the works, if not playing discs like POTC and other advanced Java titles will prove to be a less than ideal experience for new users. Note: Afterwards I took my POTC disc home and narrative about vacation, tried it with my PS3, it was a night and day difference, the statement gps disc loaded immediately and the second layer of interactive feature (after the essay on the history of gospel trailers) loaded up within seconds. Also once loaded, the menu commands responded crisply without any of the statement gps lag present earlier with the BDP-S300. Later we popped in #x2018;Casino Royale#x2019; and term, found it to look quite nice through the BDP-S300. The colors were bold and faithfully rendered while the overall image was sharp and detailed. One scene in particular, the thesis gps fight pit scene between the mongoose and snake really stood out. I#x2019;d never noticed just how much detail is present in the scene, overall resolution certainly doesn#x2019;t seem to writing a high school admissions, be one of the BDP-S300#x2019;s shortcomings. Audio Performance: We used PCM audio whenever available and found the bass extension and upper frequencies all sounded great, as mentioned earlier the player supports all the commonly used lossless audio codec#x2019;s/formats sans DTS HD Master Audio. Either way we were impressed with the S300#x2019;s audio performance and feel you will be as well.

Summary: I#x2019;m in a bit of a pickle here as to thesis statement, a recommendation based on on the the Java sluggishness alone but I#x2019;m going to go out on a limb for Sony. (Yes mark your calendars) Having seen first-hand how other hi-def disc players have been firmware updated to overcome quirky menus and other minor incompatibility issues, I#x2019;m relatively confident that once those inevitable updates reach the BDP-S300 it will warrant a full recommendation. Given the gps fact that dealer discounting and further price drops will eventually soften the 9 (MSRP) blow even further, perhaps my real recommendation would go something like: the BDP-S300 is paper on child a good player now but with further incentives combined with a firmware update or two it would be even better. Thesis. If you#x2019;re sure this is the player for you, the real question is business tips when to jump in, enjoy it now quirks and all or wait a bit longer for extra incentives and firmware updates. #x2013;Update#x2013; It looks as if the BDP-S300 isn#x2019;t HDMI 1.3 equipped after all. from statement, A/V Magazine (Italian) clearly shows a Silicon Image chipset which is HDMI 1.1 only. #x2013;Update#x2013; Folks when I#x2019;m wrong I#x2019;m wrong what can I say, the whole TrueHD thing has been eating at me since the review was posted and I just couldn#x2019;t take it anymore. Yesterday afternoon we went out and purchased #x2018;Ghost Rider#x2019; on BD (One of the few BD#x2019;s with a TrueHD track) and christmas vacation, you guessed it, the thesis BDP-S300 in its current state doesn#x2019;t decode the track. I#x2019;ll admit the writing a high school admissions TrueHD notations in thesis the owners manual even had your#x2019;s truly fooled. It appears as if TrueHD decoding simply hasn#x2019;t been implemented into the player as yet, without knowing the specifically hardware inside the player it would be hard to say with any certainly if its even a possibility at a later date by means of a firmware update. Given the essay about vacation lack of TrueHD compatibility (in its current state) and thesis statement, the previous unearthing of the HDMI 1.1 transmitter chip, I#x2019;ll have to temper my recommendation even further. At this point if you#x2019;re looking for school essay a stand-alone Blu-ray player I can#x2019;t wholeheartedly recommend the thesis gps BDP-S300 quite as easily as before these issues came to light. It#x2019;s still a good player, but certainly not quite as good as our first impressions indicated.

For what it#x2019;s worth; I feel I#x2019;ve paid my penance for my original oversights, #x2018;Ghost Rider#x2019; was truly abysmal. an essay on statement gps criticsm The Harvard Classics. 1909#150;14. The significance of the essay in the formation and perpetuation of critical doctrine is also apparent if one turns to on child the formal histories of criticism. Systematic treatises on the theory of the fine arts, including literature, have appeared at intervals since the time of Aristotle. Thesis Statement? The science of ?sthetics, as we know it, was developed in Germany during the latter half of the eighteenth century, and it forms an school admissions essay integral portion of the philosophical system of Kant and of many other philosophers. But these formal treatises upon the nature of beauty, involving as they do the analysis of the beautiful as it exists in the natural world and in works of gps art, appeal primarily to a few thinkers and scholars, and not to the general public. It is true that men of genius like Goethe, Schiller, and Burke have the faculty of discussing the philosophic basis of ?sthetic theories in such a way as to make them interesting and highly instructive to the general reader.

But as a rule the systematic treatises upon the nature and history of the fine arts, and of literature in particular, have been necessarily addressed to a limited audience. The discussions which have really caught the ear of the public have been the casual utterances of brilliant men in the act of attacking or defending a literary creed, of writing a preface to a book or a play, or of hazarding, in some dialogue, pamphlet, or essay, a new opinion about beauty, a new theory of poetry or of prose. To understand, therefore, the history of actual critical opinion, one must study the essay. It is a very variable, highly personalized literary form: resembling now a dinner-table monologue or dialogue, and tips now a letter to a friend. Thesis Statement? Here it is a mere sparkling fragment of some solid mass of philosophical theory, and there it is a tiny jewel of paradox, interrogation, or fancy; here an echo of admissions some great historical debate over tragedy or comedy, and there the first faint stirring of some new, living idea, which by and by will be tossed about with all the winds of doctrine. But however changeable this literary type may be, one who reads the various essays in gps, The Harvard Classics can hardly fail to get a general notion of the nature of #147;the essay.#148; The type will gradually make itself clear to him, as something different from the formal treatise, the music dialogue or the letter or the magazine article. He will learn to watch the type emerge into clear outline with Montaigne 1 and Bacon. 2 He will see that it modifies itself under the influence of national traits or of the fashions of successive historical periods, that it differentiates itself into species and varieties, precisely as other literary types undergo variation and thesis statement gps development under specific conditions. Narrative About Christmas Vacation? It will flourish in thesis statement, one age and decline in another, as do the drama and the lyric, although, like them, the essay represents a certain permanent mood which never goes wholly out of fashion. The reader who is mri thesis interested in literary criticism will soon find that the essay has been a particularly convenient form for conveying literary theories from one mind or age to another.

The #147;critical essay,#148; while conforming in general to the flexible laws of #147;the essay,#148; is used for a specific purpose. It deals with the emergence, continuance, and disappearance of critical opinions; it records, in an informal but none the less effective manner, the judgment of Europe upon books. Let us take a specific example. Charles Lamb#146;s #147;Essay on the Tragedies of Shakespeare#148; 3 is a singularly perfect specimen of #147;the essay#148; type. It is personal and casual. It opens with the sentence: #147;Taking a turn the other day in the Abbey, I was struck with the gps affected attitude of writing school essay a figure, which I do not remember to have seen before, and which upon examination proved to be a whole-length of the celebrated Mr.

Garrick#148;; and then Lamb passes, with apparent artlessness, from the affectations and thesis statement gps tricks of actors to the profound question of the possibility of an adequate representation of the personalities of Hamlet and Lear upon the stage. This personal essay, with its odd whims and fancies, deepens page by page into a masterly critical essay, which makes a distinct phase of the attitude of the English mind toward England#146;s greatest poet. The two essays which have just been mentioned#151;personal in their immediate character, and yet even more significant as representing doctrines which came to be held by a generation or a school#151;may also serve to illustrate a third aspect from which essays may be regarded. One may study them, in chronological order, as successive indications of a national point of view. Thus the narrative christmas English critical essay, in thesis, the Elizabethan period, in the seventeenth century, or in any subsequent epoch, reveals the precise extent to which the English mind accepts, modifies, or rejects the a high school admissions essay main body of European critical doctrine. As affording material for such a chronological study, it is not essential that any particular English critical essay should be marked by personal distinction of style, or by special critical acumen. The undistinguished mass of book reviews, of thesis statement gossip about writers, about the stage and other forms of contemporary art, is often the most valuable evidence of the instinctive working of the English mind.

What does an average bookish Englishman, in a given decade, understand by resume tips the words #147;tragic,#148; #147;comic,#148; #147;heroic,#148; #147;the unities,#148; #147;wit,#148; #147;taste,#148; #147;humor,#148; #147;Nature#148;? The historian finds the answer in a thousand casual expressions, each one of which bears the statement stamp of the period and the race. The Englishman interprets the general laws and phrases of European criticism in terms of his own neighborhood and time, and a collection of English critical essays thus illustrates the traits of the English national character. Let us now turn from the broader relations of the term paper on identity theft essay with criticism, and thesis statement endeavor to ascertain precisely what the word #147;essay#148; means. The older English form of the word is #147;assay,#148; i. e., a trial or experiment. It is derived, through the French, from on the history, a late Latin word #147;exagium,#148; which means a standard weight, or more precisely, the act of weighing. The word #147;examine#148; comes from the same Latin root. As defined by the #147;Century Dictionary,#148; #147;essay#148; means I, A trial, attempt or endeavor; 2, An experimental trial or test; 3, An assay or test of thesis metal; 4, In literature, a discursive composition concerned with a particular subject, usually shorter and less methodical and finished than a treatise; a short disquisition. Dr. Samuel Johnson, who was himself one of the most famous essayists of narrative about christmas vacation his day, defines #147;essay#148; in his Dictionary as #147;A loose sally of the mind; an thesis irregular indigested piece; not a regular and orderly composition.#148; Possibly it was the Doctor#146;s happy word #147;sally#148; which suggested to a recent writer, Mr. F. N. Zabriskie, the following excellent definition: #147;The essay is properly a collection of notes, indicating certain aspects of a subject, or suggesting thoughts concerning it; #133; not a formal siege, but a series of assaults, essays or attempts upon it.#148; It is for this reason that Mr.

Zabriskie calls the essayist the excursionist of literature, the theft literary angler, the meditator rather than the thesis gps thinker; and he points out that the German mind is not adapted to the essay, since the Germans are not satisfied to make mere assaults upon a subject, mere excursions into it; they must go through a subject from end to end and leave it a conquered territory. Montaigne, who was the initiator of the topics modern essay (1580), laid stress upon its essentially autobiographic nature. He confesses that he writes #147;not to discover things, but to lay open myself.#148; He thinks that an essay should be spontaneous and free from every artificial trammel. It should have the characteristics of open, varied, wide-ranging talk: #147;I speak unto paper as unto the first man I meet.#148; Lord Bacon, whose first edition of essays appeared in 1597, is gps more orderly than Montaigne. Term Paper On Identity Theft? He masses his material more closely, keeps to his topic, packs his sentences as full as they will hold. He is too austere for the leisurely, personal method of Montaigne; he imparts his concentrated worldly wisdom coolly, almost impassively; he loves the thesis pregnant opening and close. #147;To write just treatises,#148; he says, #147;requireth time in the writer and leisure in the reader, which is the cause that hath made me choose to write certain brief notes, set down rather significantly than curiously, which I have called essays; the word is paper theft late, but the statement thing is ancient. On Child Obesity? For Seneca#146;s Epistles to Lucilius, if one mark them well, are but essays#151;that is, dispersed meditations.#148; And finally, Addison, whose essays sum up the early eighteenth century as completely as Montaigne and Bacon represent the late Renaissance, is quite as explicit as they are in emphasizing the statement informal character of narrative essay about christmas this type of literature: #147;When I make choice of a subject that has not been treated on by others, I throw together my reflections on it without any order or method, so that they may appear rather in the looseness and freedom of an essay, than in the regularity of a set discourse.#148; #147;The thing is statement ancient#148;; there is no doubt of that. Paper On Child? Analogies to the mood of the modern essay and to its urbane, free, flexible methods of discussion, may be found in the #147;Dialogues#148; of Plato, 5 in thesis, the #147;Lives#148; 6 and #147;Morals#148; of Plutarch, in the letters of Cicero, 7 Horace, and on the history of gospel the younger Pliny, 8 in the gossipy #147;Attic Nights#148; of Aulus Gellius, in the talks of Epictetus, 9 and the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius. 10 There is nothing new under the sun; and statement there were Greek and writing essay Roman gentlemen quite as capable as Montaigne of writing with frankness, ease, quaintness, and an open-minded attitude of skeptical inquiry.

But though they often revealed the spirit of the modern essayist, they were groping uncertainly after the appropriate literary form. Montaigne#146;s great achievement was to hazard his fortunes in an unsurpassed series of thesis statement gps #147;sallies,#148; #147;assaults,#148; #147;assays#148; upon a hundred entrenched topics, and writing a high always to come bravely off#151;so that his tactics became the thesis statement gps model for all literary skirmishes. To think and feel and write like Montaigne was to produce the modern essay. Business Resume? Without his example, it is doubtful if we should have had the essays of Lamb, of Emerson, and of Stevenson. Supporting the whole theory and practice of Montaigne, undoubtedly, stood the Renaissance itself.

This #147;re-birth#148; of the human mind, this new awakening of vital energies and gps intellectual powers, involved a new way of writing a high school looking at the world. Nothing seemed quite the same as it had been. Church and empire and thesis feudal system were apparently weakening; new nationalities, new languages were to be reckoned with; new continents were explored, new inventions altered the face of daily life; a new intellectual confidence, inquiry, criticism, supplanted the medi?val obedience to authority. Resume? There was a new #147;weighing,#148; #147;assaying#148; of all things. The actual world was changing before men#146;s eyes, and the inner world changed no less. There was universal curiosity about individual capacities and opinions, experiences and tastes. The whole #147;undulating and various#148; scheme of things#151;to use a favorite expression of Montaigne#151;was a direct provocative of the essay state of mind; and thesis statement the essay form, in turn, in its looseness, vagueness, and range, was singularly adapted to the intellectual spirit of the period. One type of Renaissance essay, for example, concerned itself with a casual survey of the fragments of the classical and medi?val world.

Modern books like Taylor#146;s #147;Classical Heritage of the Middle Ages,#148; and #147;The Medi?val Mind,#148; Einstein#146;s #147;Italian Renaissance in England,#148; Sir Sidney Lee#146;s #147;French Renaissance in obesity, England,#148; Spingarn#146;s #147;Literary Criticism in the Renaissance,#148; and Saintsbury#146;s #147;History of Criticism#148; set before us, with abundance of detail, the kind and extent of knowledge of the past which was possessed by Renaissance essayists. Caxton#146;s naive Prologues and Epilogues 11 to the popular classical and medi?val books which he issued in English, Sir Philip Sidney#146;s chivalrous #147;Defense of Poesy,#148; 12 and Edmund Spenser#146;s explanation to Sir Walter Raleigh of the purpose of thesis statement gps #147;The Faerie Queene#148; 13 are good illustrations of the attitude of typical Englishmen toward the imaginative life of the writing school admissions essay past. Gregory Smith#146;s collection of thesis statement #147;Elizabethan Critical Essays#148; affords a fairly complete view of the on the of gospel critical ideas which sixteenth-century England had inherited from Europe. The evolution of the English critical essay, during the three hundred years which have elapsed since then, is mainly the story of the preservation of these ideas and their modification or transformation under the gps successive impacts of new intellectual forces, and of differing social and a high literary conditions. Another type of essay, originating in the Renaissance, and a favorite with Montaigne, deals not so much with books as with life itself. The new culture, the novel intellectual perceptions, altered at once the gps accepted theories of man#146;s duty and destiny. Montaigne does not dogmatize about these matters: he asks questions, he suggests possible answers.

The speculative essay, the term paper on identity philosophical and thesis statement scientific essay, the social essay which draws its materials from the ever-renewed revelation of the actual life of man, all find their source in an awakened curiosity. The enthusiasm, the topics gusto, with which sixteenth-century men discussed every topic within their range of vision, has remained an integral element of the effective essay. A man may set himself sadly and grimly to statement work upon term on identity theft, his formal treatise, and write it through to the end with disillusion in thesis statement gps, his soul. But the born essayist, though knowing well enough that his raids into unconquered territory must be merely a perpetual series of sallies and retreats, nevertheless advances gayly to the assault. Like Lamb and Stevenson, he preaches without being a preacher; like Huxley and Tyndall, he teaches when he means only to inform; so communicable and infectious is this gift of topics curiosity about life. Thesis Gps? There is a third type of essay, originating in the Renaissance emphasis upon research, individualism, and confidently asserting itself upon statement, the pages of Montaigne, 14 Addison, Hazlitt, De Quincey, 15 Emerson, 16 Thoreau, 17 and a hundred other men.

It is the autobiographic, #147;egotistic#148; essay#151;in which there is rarely any insolence of egotism, but only an insatiable curiosity about oneself, and an entire willingness to discuss that question in public. Research Paper On Child? If you like the man who is talking, this kind of essay is the most delightful of all. But it betrays a great deal, and like lyric verse#151;the most intensely personalized mode of poetry#151;it sometimes betrays too much. When the gps right balance is struck between openness and conceit, or when, as with Emerson, the research paper obesity man is sweet and sound to the core, the self-revealing essay justifies itself. Indeed, it is thought by some critics that the subjective or lyrical quality of the essay is a part of its essential character. Thus Professor A. C. Bradley has asserted: #147;Brevity, simplicity, and singleness of presentation; the strong play of personality, the subjective charm, the statement delicate touch, the limited range of theme and topics of treatment, and the ordered beauty through exclusion of all disordered moods and fiercer passions#151;these flow directly from the presence and dominance of the thesis lyrical element, and these are the business resume tips constant features of the Essay.#148; In fact, one of the most interesting studies made available through The Harvard Classics is the survey of various national moods in successive historical periods. Statement Gps? Take, for instance, the English essayists of the eighteenth century. Here are characteristic utterances of men so differently yet richly endowed as Addison and research paper obesity Swift, Steele and Defoe, 19 Sidney and Samuel Johnson, Hume 20 and Burke, 21 yet the student of the thesis gps eighteenth century, whether he is reading Hume or Burke on Taste, or Johnson explaining the plan of his great Dictionary, 22 Defoe#146;s ironical scheme for writing, ridding the world of Dissenters, or Addison#146;s delicately sentimental musings in Westminster Abbey, detects, beneath all the differences in style and varieties of personal opinion, the unmistakable traits of race, nation, and period. These essays are thus historical documents of high importance. One understands better, for reading them, the England of Marlborough and of Walpole, the England of the Pitts and thesis the four Georges.

Any one century, as Carlyle said long ago, is the lineal descendant of all the preceding centuries, and an intelligent reading of the narrative essay christmas vacation English essays of the gps seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries is one of the best ways of learning that significant lesson. Even if the reader of these essays has no special knowledge of English history, and has hitherto paid but little attention to mri thesis topics the influence of one school of thought upon thesis statement, its successors, he cannot help discovering one difference between what we have called #147;the essay#148; and its more specialized from #147;the critical essay.#148; #147;The essay#148; moves in a circle. Its orbit tends to return perpetually upon research, itself. One may even say that the type was already complete in Montaigne, and that since then it has made no real advance; that we have only a succession of essayists, doing, of course with infinite personal varieties of statement gps pattern, precisely what Montaigne showed them how to do. Business Resume? But the critical essay advances, albeit by zigzag lines. It is statement obliged to tack, as the winds of doctrine shift and christmas the tides of opinion ebb and flow, yet it is always steering, and not merely drifting. Take, for thesis, example, the most famous critical essay of the Greeks, the #147;Poetics#148; of Aristotle. Mri Thesis? It is an attempt to establish certain fundamental principles of ?sthetic criticism, such as the laws of statement epic poetry and the nature of tragedy. It analyzed the structure of contemporary works of paper literary art, tested the thesis statement psychological effect of poem and play upon the mind of the reader and spectator, and laid down some shrewd rules for the guidance of about poets.

It is an essay rather than an exhaustive treatise, but it is by no means the sort of essay which Montaigne would have written had he been a Greek. It is impersonal, analytical, scientific. And so logical is its matter, so penetrating its insight, that it became a model of sound critical procedure. The writer of the critical essay, in short, finds that his course has been laid out for him by the very nature of the task which he has undertaken. The mere essayist, as we have seen, can sail in a circle, starting and thesis statement ending with his own fancies; but the man who uses the essay as the vehicle of criticism must use chart and compass; must proceed from mri thesis topics, a given starting point to a definite point of arrival. And he cannot do this if he is ignorant of the efforts of his predecessors, and unaware of the general aims and methods of critical procedure. Thesis Gps? If he is writing, for business, instance, on the theory of thesis gps poetry, he does not wish to research on child obesity leave the matter where he found it: he desires to make, if he can, a contribution to thesis gps that branch of human knowledge. But he is not likely to succeed unless he has a tolerably clear notion of just how far the world-old discussion has proceeded at the point where he himself takes up the business debate.

When Horace wrote that clever versified essay on gps the poet#146;s art, an essay which has been irreverently termed #147;the business man#146;s guide to poetry,#148; he had no intention of slavishly imitating the rules of the mri thesis Greek theorists. But after all, his father had sent him to a Greek University, and the ghosts of his old professors were peeping over his shoulders as he wrote. And when, long afterward, the Italian Vida and the Frenchman Boileau came to write their own verse essays on the same topic, the ghost of the clever Roman held their pens. Sidney and Shelley, in composing their eloquent Defences of Poetry, 23 had probably no conscious thought of continuing the formal discussion of poetic theory which the Greeks began and the Renaissance resuscitated; nevertheless, their confessions of statement gps faith in poetry form an essential chapter in the evolution of topics criticism. So with the prefaces of gps Wordsworth and Coleridge and Walt Whitman. 24 These men are innovators in theory and practice of their craft, but, like most of the successful innovators and #147;modernists#148; in art, they possessed a fairly accurate knowledge of the ancient defenses which they were trying to carry by history assault. Yet these assaults, no matter how brilliant, never really end the siege. The final truth escapes complete analysis and definition. The history of the critical essay shows only a series of approximations, a record of endeavors which must be constantly renewed. Out of all this variety of effort, however, three tendencies of criticism emerge. They are usually called the statement #147;judicial,#148; the #147;interpretative,#148; and the #147;impressionistic.#148; The theoretical distinction between these tendencies of criticism is clear enough. #147;Judicial#148; criticism passes judgment upon established facts.

It deals primarily with rules, with the #147;canons#148; of criticism, although it may, of course, examine the principles upon which these rules are based. Its estimates are likely to be dogmatic and magisterial. It says bluntly, in the voice of Jeffrey, that Wordsworth#146;s #147;Excursion#148; #147;will never do#148;; that his #147;White Doe of writing a high admissions essay Rylstone#148; is thesis gps #147;the very worst poem we ever saw imprinted in a quarto volume.#148; It declares, with Professor Churton Collins, that #147;Criticism is to literature what legislation and government are to states.#148; The aim of #147;interpretative#148; criticism, on the other hand, is not so much to pass judgment upon a specific work, as to explain it. It seeks and establishes, if possible, correct texts; it makes clear the biographical and writing essay historical facts essential to an understanding of the work in question. It finds and reveals the meaning and beauty there contained.

It points out the ethical and social significance of the literary product. To explain a book, no doubt, is often tantamount to statement judging it; for if the book be demonstrated to be full of corruption, that is the most effective way of paper on identity declaring it a corrupt book. Nevertheless, the object of the #147;interpretative#148; or #147;appreciative#148; critic is primarily expository, and he prefers that the reader himself should pass ultimate judgment, in the light of the exposition which has been made. He puts the needful facts before the jury, and then rests his case. Sainte-Beuve 25 is a master of this sort of criticism, as Jeffrey is of the magisterial. Thesis? The #147;impressionistic#148; critic, finally, does not concern himself overmuch with the of gospel music canons. He leaves #147;universal considerations#148; and #147;the common sense of most#148; to his rivals. Textual criticism bores him. The examination of principles strikes him as too #147;scientific,#148; the massing of biographical and historical details seems to thesis him the tips work of the historian rather than the critic. He deals frankly in his own #147;impressions,#148; his personal preferences, the adventures of his soul in the presence of masterpieces.

He translates the sensations and emotions which he has experienced in his contact with books into symbols borrowed from all the other arts and from the inexhaustible stores of natural beauty. His rivals may call him a man of caprice rather than a man of taste, but they cannot really confute him, for such are the infinitely varied modes of physical and psychological reaction to gps the presence of the beautiful, that nobody knows exactly how the other man feels. We must take his word for it, and a high school admissions the words of impressionistic criticism have often been uttered with an exquisite delicacy and freshness and radiance that make all other types of literary criticism seem for the moment mere cold and formal pedantries. So much for the theoretical distinction between the statement gps three tendencies. But no one can read many pages of the masters of modern criticism without becoming aware that all three tendencies frequently reveal themselves in the same man, and even in the same essay. Some of the famous #147;impressionists,#148; like Lamb, Stevenson, Lemaitre, and Anatole France, know a great deal more about the writing admissions essay #147;canons#148; than they wish at the moment to confess. They play so skillfully with the overtones of statement gps criticism because they know the fundamental tones so well.

Stevenson attempts #147;scientific#148; criticism in mri thesis topics, his essay on thesis statement #147;Style,#148; #147;historical#148; criticism in on the music, his essay on Pepy 26 Jeffrey occasionally writes #147;national character#148; criticism quite in the expository method of Sainte-Beuve. Coleridge and Emerson, Arnold and Ruskin, 27 are too many-sided and richly endowed men to limit their literary essays to any one type of criticism.

Combined effects of precipitation and nitrogen deposition on native and invasive winter annual production in California deserts. Primary production in deserts is limited by gps, soil moisture and paper, N availability, and thus is likely to be influenced by both anthropogenic N deposition and statement, precipitation regimes altered as a consequence of climate change. Invasive annual grasses are particularly responsive to increases in N and water availabilities, which may result in competition with native forb communities. Additionally, conditions favoring increased invasive grass production in arid and semi-arid regions can increase fire risk, negatively impacting woody vegetation that is not adapted to on the history of gospel, fire. Gps? We conducted a seeded garden experiment and a 5-year field fertilization experiment to investigate how winter annual production is altered by research on child, increasing N supply under a range of water availabilities.

The greatest production of invasive grasses and native forbs in the garden experiment occurred under the highest soil N (inorganic N after fertilization = 2.99 g m ?2 ) and highest watering regime, indicating these species are limited by both water and thesis statement, N. A classification and regression tree (CART) analysis on the multi-year field fertilization study showed that winter annual biomass was primarily limited by business tips, November–December precipitation. Biomass exceeded the threshold capable of carrying fire when inorganic soil N availability was at least 3.2 g m ?2 in pinon-juniper woodland. Due to water limitation in statement gps creosote bush scrub, biomass exceeded the fire threshold only under very wet conditions regardless of soil N status. The CART analyses also revealed that percent cover of invasive grasses and native forbs is primarily dependent on the timing and amount of precipitation and secondarily dependent on soil N and site-specific characteristics. In total, our results indicate that areas of high N deposition will be susceptible to grass invasion, particularly in wet years, potentially reducing native species cover and increasing the risk of fire. The online version of this article (doi: 10.1007/s00442-009-1516-5 ) contains supplementary material, which is available to thesis gps, authorized users. Climate change models indicate that many regions will experience an increase in the severity of tips, extreme climatic events such as droughts, heat waves, and statement gps, floods (Solomon et al. 2007 ). These climate changes will cause vegetation distributions to paper, shift, such as in California where the extent of thesis gps, arid grasslands is predicted to mri thesis, increase due in part to statement, increased fire size and frequency (Lenihan et al. 2003 ). Many studies from arid and semi-arid regions have shown a linkage between climate and fire (Swetnam and Betancourt 1998 ; Grissino-Mayer and Swetnam 2000 ; Harris et al. 2008 ; Drury and Veblen 2008 ; Miller et al. 2009 ). Fire may also be promoted by invasions of non-native species (D’Antonio and Vitousek 1992 ; Brooks et al. Business Tips? 2004 ), which themselves are associated with increased disturbance, including climate change, land use change, and N deposition (Dukes and Mooney 1999 ). In western North America, invasion by statement gps, non-native grasses has resulted in increased fire frequency and intensity (Zouhar et al.

2008 ). Mri Thesis? This so called “grass-fire cycle” occurs because the invasive grasses create a persistent and continuous fine fuel load that allows fire to statement gps, carry between widely spaced shrubs (D’Antonio and Vitousek 1992 ; Brooks et al. 2004 ). Paper On Identity? The invasive grasses recover more quickly than shrubs, increasing fire frequency until the shrubs are lost from the landscape. This type-conversion has occurred in thesis gps several ecosystems including sagebrush, coastal sage scrub, and creosote bush scrub (Minnich and Dezzani 1998 ; Menakis et al. 2003 ; Brooks and Matchett 2006 ; Zouhar et al. 2008 ). An increase in fire size and frequency has been observed in the Sonoran and Mojave Deserts resulting in reduced shrub density and diversity (Brown and Minnich 1986 ; Brooks and Berry 2006 ; Hereford et al. 2006 ). Fires in these deserts often occur in years with below-average precipitation but that are preceded by 1–2 years of above-average rainfall (Swetnam and Betancourt 1998 ; Grissino-Mayer and Swetnam 2000 ; Lenihan et al.

2003 ; Brooks and Matchett 2006 ). The years of research on child obesity, high rainfall result in high production by native and invasive annuals thereby increasing the fine fuel load (Brown and Minnich 1986 ). Arid land winter annuals have also been found to thesis statement gps, be sensitive to obesity, within-season precipitation timing, which differentially affects germination of invasive grasses and native forb species (Beatley 1974 ; Brooks 1999 ; Lundholm and Larson 2004 ; Sher et al. 2004 ). While several large native annuals produce persistent fuel beds (Minnich 2008 ), the thesis, fuel components of greatest concern are invasive annual grasses red brome ( Bromus madritensis ), cheatgrass ( Bromus tectorum ), and Mediterranean split grass ( Schismus barbatus and Schismus arabicus ) that may increase in about christmas vacation productivity in thesis statement gps years of high rainfall (Brooks 1999 ; Brooks 2003 ; Salo 2004 ; Brooks and Minnich 2006 ). No threshold of fine fuels has been determined for desert biomass, although thresholds for fine fuels needed in grass-dominated systems are estimated to be 70–150 g m ?2 (Anderson 1982 ; Scifres and Hamilton 1993 ; Fenn et al. 2003a ). Narrative Essay About? In the desert this range is more likely to be reached under high invasive grass abundance because grass litter does not disarticulate as rapidly as native forb litter (Brooks and Minnich 2006 ). Additionally, invasive grasses are responsive to both increased precipitation and increased N availability (Monaco et al. 2003 ; Fenn et al. 2003a ; Salo et al. 2005 ).

After precipitation, N is statement gps, considered most limiting to plant production in arid and semi-arid regions (Hooper and Johnson 1999 ). In arid regions downwind of paper, major urban or agricultural centers, dry N deposition is increasing and thesis gps, is likely influencing plant communities through fertilization effects (Brooks 2003 ; Fenn et al. 2003b ; Allen et al. 2009 ; Rao et al. 2009 ). The co-limitation of production by history music, N and water suggests that the build-up of fine fuels sufficient to carry wildfires would most likely occur when both N deposition and above-average precipitation are present. Thus, the hypothesis addressed by this study is: N and precipitation interact such that the biomass produced by annual vegetation exceeds the fire threshold more frequently under N deposition. We tested the thesis gps, hypothesis using a seeded garden experiment and a multi-year (2004–2008) field fertilization of natural vegetation to evaluate the business resume tips, interactions between N fertilization and water availability on biomass production. By using classification and regression tree analysis (CART) on the long-term fertilization experiment results, we were able to examine the data for thresholds of thesis statement, soil N and term paper on identity theft, consider the gps, implications of paper on identity theft, uncertainty regarding fine fuel thresholds. Additionally, we examined the thesis, response of total annual production, native forb cover, and paper obesity, invasive forb cover to changes in thesis gps precipitation timing to better determine the effects of within-season precipitation variability on production and winter annual community composition. General soil characteristics for the garden and field fertilization of natural vegetation experiments.

Fenn, personal communication) c Gravel only, rocks 2 cm excluded during sample collection. There were five replicates of each water treatment, for a total of fifteen 1.7 ? 2.5-m plots that were subdivided into six 0.65 ? 0.6-m subplots with a 20-cm buffer around each subplot. Three subplots were planted with A. tessellata and three subplots with B. madritensis in a randomized manner, with each species fertilized with either 0.5, 3.0 g N m ?2 , or left unfertilized as a control. Fertilizer additions were chosen to be comparable to the JTNP field fertilization experiment. We took one 8-cm-deep soil core from each subplot prior to fertilization for thesis gps extraction with 1 M KCl and colorimetric determination of NO 3 ? and NH 4 + (Technicon Instruments, Tarrytown, NY). After the writing a high school admissions, first rain and before seed planting, N fertilizer was added as granular NH 4 NO 3 . We collected seeds from multiple areas within JTNP where both species were abundant.

Within 1 week of the first rain seeds were planted to achieve a density of 150 plants m ?2 . After establishment, average densities were 110 and 29 plants m ?2 for B. madritensis and A. tessellata respectively, which were within observed field densities (Hunter 1991 ). All plants that germinated naturally from the seed bank (primarily Pectocarya sp., Schismus sp., and Erodium cicutarium ) were removed by hand-weeding. Our three water treatments included low (or drought), intermediate (or average precipitation), and high rain. The drought precipitation regime was achieved by installing rainout shelters that were modeled after the design by Yahdjian and Sala ( 2002 ) and constructed to intercept 80% of statement, incident precipitation. Shelter roofs were constructed from strips of clear corrugated plastic and were removable in order to narrative essay vacation, reduce shading of treated and nearby plots. Thesis Gps? We installed 25-cm-deep plastic lined trenches around the term paper, plot perimeter to prevent movement of statement, water into the plot. Writing A High School Admissions Essay? A gutter collected rainwater and channeled the water to a 38-l storage unit. Collected rainwater was applied to thesis statement, the high-rainfall plots, which were also trenched and lined to prevent movement of resume, water out of the plot. All plots contained ECH 2 O volumetric soil water sensors (Decagon Devices, Pullman, WA) that were field calibrated by relating actual volumetric water content to sensor millivolt readings.

Rainout shelter roofs were not installed on the shelters until the gps, seedlings established, and the threat of a storm was imminent. Only one storm occurred after establishment and so the rainout shelter roofs were used for a total of 1 week. Because of a lack of rain during the late winter and early spring, water was added to writing a high school admissions, the intermediate and high-rainfall plots. Yucca Valley tap water was used to water the plots and contained 3.5 mg NO 3 ? l ?1 with non-detectable amounts of thesis statement, NH 4 + . On The History Music? Intermediate rain plots received three applications of water equivalent to 0.25 cm of precipitation per application and high-rainfall plots received six applications of 0.84 cm of thesis statement, water. In total, the plots received 16, 11, and 9 cm of natural + artificial precipitation in the high-, intermediate-, and low-water treatment plots, compared to mri thesis topics, the 70 year mean ± SD of 10 ± 8 cm of winter precipitation as determined from a nearby weather station. We harvested eight individual B. madritensis plants from each subplot 4 times throughout the spring (Online resource 1). Because of the small number of A. Gps? tessellata that germinated, an allometric relationship between plant width and height and resume tips, plant weight was developed for each harvest period using a total of 15 individuals. The harvest-period specific allometric equations were used to calculate the weight of eight individuals from each treatment for which height and width were measured. At the final sampling eight individual A. Statement? tessellata plants were harvested from each subplot. Term On Identity Theft? All plants were oven dried at 60°C to constant mass and weighed.

Flowers or seed heads from red brome were counted and weighed separately from the shoots. The average shoot biomass from the thesis gps, eight individuals harvested from tips each subplot was used as one data point in subsequent analyses. Field fertilization of thesis statement gps, natural vegetation. We established fertilization plots at four sites within JNTP. A High Admissions Essay? Two sites were in creosote bush (CB) scrub located in the lower elevation Sonoran Desert (33°49?52.2?N, 115°45?26.6?W; 33°56?36.5?N, 116°23?44.3?W). The other two sites were pinon-juniper woodland (PJ) in the higher elevation Mojave Desert (34°2?13?N, 116°4?29.6?W; 34°0?48.7?N, 116°18?39.9?W).

In each vegetation type one site was located on the western edge of the statement, park, which was subjected to high levels of N deposition (high N), and one site was located in the interior of the park where there were low levels of N deposition (low N; Allen et al. Term On Identity? 2009 ). Selected site characteristics are listed in Table 1 and site-specific vegetation data are in Allen et al. ( 2009 ), with general descriptions in Keeler-Wolfe ( 2007 ) and Schoenherr and Burk ( 2007 ). The dominant shrub at the CB sites was Larrea tridentata with an understory of native forbs and invasive annual grasses, S. arabicus and S. barbatus (hereafter Schismus spp.). Total live shrub cover was 9.5 ± 2.7 and 18.1 ± 3.8% for CB-low N and CB-high N, respectively. The dominant trees/shrubs at the PJ sites were Juniperus californica and Pinus monophylla with an understory of shrubs, native forbs and thesis, invasive annual grasses, B. madritensis , B. Research Obesity? tectorum , and Schismus spp. Live tree + shrub cover was 20.8 ± 0.9 and 22.7 ± 1.4% at PJ-low N and PJ-high N, respectively.

Annual invasive forbs, primarily Erodium cicutarium , were not a major component of the cover at any of the sites (Allen et al. 2009 ). Cumulative winter precipitation (mm) for the years in which vegetation was sampled at the four Joshua Tree National Park sites: creosote bush (CB)-low N ( a ), CB-high N ( b ), pinon-juniper woodland (PJ)-low N ( c ), and PJ-high N ( d ). The 70-year average winter precipitation for each site is indicated by the dashed line. Shading indicates years that did not receive sufficient precipitation to elicit germination and statement gps, thus were excluded from the statistical analyses. We centered each plot on an individual tree or shrub, with the plot size determined by the shrub or tree size (6 ? 6 m for writing a high admissions essay creosote bush, 8 ? 8 m for juniper, and 10 ? 10 m for pine). Two levels of thesis statement gps, fertilizer were used, 0.5 and 3.0 g N m ?2 year ?1 , plus unfertilized controls.

In the writing a high school, winter 2005, a lower fertilization treatment (0.2 g N m ?2 year ?1 ) was added because the 0.5 g N m ?2 year ?1 treatment had significant effects on biomass in the spring 2005 and we were interested in determining if a lower N threshold existed. The fertilization levels bracket the observed range of N deposition found in this region (Sullivan et al. 2001 ; Tonnesen et al. 2007 ). Thesis Gps? In addition, the high level of fertilization was chosen to be comparable to other desert fertilization studies where 3.0 g N m ?2 year ?1 has induced responses by the invasive grasses (Brooks 2003 ). Ten replicates of each shrub or tree species were fertilized and selected across the landscape in a randomized block design, with the exception of narrative essay about, PJ-low N where the limited availability of trees and shrubs resulted in nine blocks. At the PJ sites, both pine and junipers were fertilized with 0, 0.5, and 3.0 g N m ?2 year ?1 in thesis statement gps each block, but only juniper 0.2 g N m ?2 year ?1 plots were added to each block in 2005 due to limited numbers of pines at these sites.

Plots were fertilized with granular NH 4 NO 3 each December beginning in 2002. We sampled vegetation each spring (March–May) at the peak of production, which varied by history, site and year depending on temperature and thesis gps, precipitation. Percent cover of invasive grasses and native forbs was determined in a 1.0 ? 0.5-m gridded quadrat placed outside the drip line of writing school essay, each shrub (i.e., just outside the edge of the shrub canopy) on the north- and south-facing sides. Biomass was calculated from the percentage cover data using equations developed for one CB site and one PJ site relating percent cover to biomass using 0.25 ? 0.5-m clipped plots. Biomass relationships were determined in 2005 and 2008 for fertilized and statement, unfertilized plots, with the 2008 data applied to all years except 2005 due to the very high amounts of precipitation received during the 2004–2005 growing season. Percent cover was generally a good predictor of biomass with R 2 -values ranging from 0.77 to 0.97 (2005 regressions n = 11, 2008 regressions n = 21). A relationship between percent cover at the drip line and the percent cover in the interspaces (i.e., the business, spaces outside the influence of the thesis statement gps, shrubs) was developed using 2008 cover data from narrative essay vacation PJ-high N. Thesis Statement? Because interspace vegetation carries fire through the paper on child obesity, desert by creating a continuous fine fuel source between shrubs and is the basis for the fire thresholds, it was necessary to convert all drip line percent cover values to thesis, interspace cover estimates. Percent cover, measured in on identity theft 1 ? 0.5-m gridded quadrat in thesis statement gps the interspaces of a subset of PJ plots was found to term theft, be 0.76 of the thesis statement gps, percent cover on the south side of the writing school admissions essay, shrub.

This conversion was applied to all sites and treatments in all years and biomass calculated from the interspace cover estimates. Prior to fertilization, we took soil cores to thesis statement, a depth of 5 cm from interspace areas in all plots for paper extractable soil N analysis. Soils collected in 2003 and 2004 were extracted with 1 M KCl and analyzed colorimetrically for NO 3 ? and NH 4 + (Technicon Instruments). Beginning in 2005, soils were sent to the DANR Analytical Laboratory for NO 3 ? and NH 4 + determination based on published protocols ( http://www.danranlab.ucdavis.edu/ ). Statement? Extractable soil N was converted to essay vacation, an aerial basis using average site rock content and bulk density measurements and summing the measured soil N with the N fertilizer added. In the thesis gps, cases of outliers or missing data, the mean value from resume tips all plots in a treatment was used in the statistical analyses.

The shoot weight from the garden experiment was analyzed using a residual maximum likelihood ANOVA to thesis statement, account for the split-plot design. The ANOVA was run for each species and sampling period to determine the effect of N, water availability, and the N ? water interaction on essay about vacation biomass using JMP version 7 (SAS Institute, Cary, NC). Significant effects were determined with post-hoc Tukey’s honest significant difference test using an statement ? = 0.05. All data were transformed as necessary to writing a high admissions, meet requirements for equal variance and normal distribution of error. For the field fertilization of natural vegetation experiment, CART was conducted using JMP version 8 (SAS Institute, Cary, NC). We chose to use regression tree analysis due to its ability to handle non-linear combinations of predictor variables and identify thresholds (De’Ath and Fabricius 2000 ; Vayssieres et al. 2000 ). In CART, decision trees are generated through recursive partitioning of the data set into subsets that are more homogeneous in terms of the response variable (Breiman et al. 1984 ). Regression trees can be advantageous over traditional linear techniques because they allow for interactions and non-linearity when numerous predictors are present (Prasad et al.

2006 ). In addition, CART is robust with respect to thesis, outliers and does not require that the data be normally distributed (De’Ath and tips, Fabricius 2000 ; Vayssieres et al. 2000 ). Variable descriptions used in regression tree analysis. For vegetation type analyses only; identifies the site location in each vegetation type (low N or high N) For PJ only; identifies the species of tree or shrub about which the statement gps, plot was located. Amount of precipitation that fell during March and April. Amount of soil N measured prior to fertilization each winter + the amount of fertilizer added, converted to topics, g m ?2.

Total interspace biomass calculated from % cover of invasive grasses and native forbs measured outside the thesis, shrub dripline and multiplied by a reduction factor. Average percent cover of invasive (exotic) grasses measured outside the dripline of the north and south sides of shrubs. Average percent cover of native forbs measured outside the dripline of the north and south sides of shrubs. The 2007–2008 winter rain season in the Yucca Valley region was characterized by four precipitation events; one each in business December and thesis, January, and two in February (Online resource 1). After the water treatments were applied, the low-water plots showed a decrease in volumetric water content (VWC), approaching zero in tips early April.

The decrease in VWC in the control plots was more gradual due to three applications of water and approached zero in mid-April. In the high-water plots the VWC was above that of the two lower water treatments until the water applications were stopped in mid-April and VWC decreased to zero by the final harvest. Average individual plant biomass (g per plant ± SE) for each harvest of Amsinckia tessellata ( a ) and Bromus madritensis ( b ) across the water and soil N treatments. Thesis Statement Gps? At the end of the topics, growing season the largest individuals were found in the high water, high-N ( black bars ) treatments. Thesis? Asterisks indicate the most significant response. ANOVAs on term on identity theft biomass of thesis statement gps, B. madritensis at each harvest also showed a significant effect of N throughout (in all sampling periods P 0.0001).

In all cases the 2.99 g soil N m ?2 plots had larger plants, with no difference in plant size between 0.95 and 1.54 g N m ?2 . The only harvests with a significant water effect were the last two, where the plants in the high-water treatment were larger than those in the intermediate and low-water treatments (1st, P = 0.54; 2nd, P = 0.46; 3rd, P = 0.0002; 4th, P 0.0001). In all N treatments the plants reached the business resume tips, maximum size by second harvest in thesis the low- and intermediate-water plots; in the high-water plots individuals continued to grow until the final harvest (Fig. Essay Christmas Vacation? 2 b). Statement? No N ? water interactions were observed at any harvest for research on child either species. Field fertilization of natural vegetation. Summary of regression tree results. Individual regression trees for native forb and invasive grass cover at the low- and paper on child obesity, high-N-deposition CB sites had fewer terminal nodes than those for the combined sites (Table 3 ). Gps? For both invasive grass and native forb cover at CB-low N, precipitation explained the majority of the about christmas, model variance. In both cases there were several precipitation periods that explained equal variance (as indicated by asterisks in Fig. Statement Gps? 3 and Online resources 2 and 3); the most frequently occurring variable from the writing school, cross-validations is presented in the figures. At CB-low N, soil N was a significant explanatory variable for thesis statement both invasive grasses and native forbs, but at CB-high N, only precipitation was found to be significant in explaining invasive grass cover (Table 3 ). Tips? Native forb cover was primarily explained by precipitation, with soil N explaining 4% of model variance and resulting in greatest cover when soil N 3.8 g m ?2 (Online resource 2). The combined and individual site regression trees for PJ generally explained less variance than the CB regression trees (Table 3 ). The regression tree on joint-site total biomass indicated that precipitation was the primary explanatory variable, with NDP and JFP precipitation having equal explanatory power for the first split. Soil N explained 15.6% of the statement, model variance, and when late fall-early winter precipitation was high and soil N 4.2 g m ?2 , biomass exceeded the fire threshold. Business Resume? Except for gps two other cases, average biomass was less than the fire threshold (Fig. 3 ). The first split of the writing admissions, joint-site regression tree for statement gps invasive grasses was on the site variable, while native forb cover was primarily influenced by winter precipitation (NDP and JFP with equal variance explained for the first split) and was maximized when soil N was between 0.37 and 0.67 g m ?2 . The site-specific PJ regression trees revealed that the greatest cover of invasive grasses occurred with JFP 15 mm at essay christmas vacation, PJ-low N and high fall rains (SOP 50 mm) and soil N (between 1.4 and 3.5 g m ?2 ) at PJ-high N (Online resource 3). Overall, these models explained relatively little of the total variance in invasive grass cover (Table 3 ). Native forb cover at PJ-low N was more responsive to soil N than invasive grasses; the thesis, greatest cover of forbs occurred with between 3.4 and essay on the of gospel, 4.0 g m ?2 or greater than 0.5 g m ?2 of soil N depending on the timing and amount of thesis gps, early and on the, late season precipitation (Online resource 2).

Native forb cover at gps, PJ-high N was greatest under the topics, influence of pine trees when soil N between 0.37 and 0.42 g m ?2 . The CART results indicate that the primary limiting factor for production at these arid sites is water, with the thesis statement, first split occurring on precipitation and music, explaining 77 and 69% of model variance in thesis statement CB and PJ, respectively. The greater explanatory power of on identity, precipitation at CB is likely because CB occurs in areas with less mean annual precipitation (Rowlands 1995 ); at our sites the mean winter precipitation in PJ was 17 mm greater than in CB over the study period. Studies in arid systems have shown that water availability is most limiting for annual production (Noy-Meir 1973 ; Beatley 1974 ; Patten 1978 ; Gutierrez et al. Statement? 1992 ; Brooks 2002 ). However, while some researchers have found that annual production exhibits secondary limitation by N (Whitford and Gutierrez 1989 ; Gutierrez et al. 1992 ; Hooper and Johnson 1999 ), the results are not always straightforward. Often the response to obesity, increased soil N is species or site specific, depending on antecedent soil N conditions (Gutierrez and Whitford 1987 ; Ludwig et al. 1989 ; Brooks 2003 ). In our CART models, soil N is a significant explanatory variable for both CB and PJ biomass, but only statement weakly so in narrative about vacation CB (2%) compared to thesis statement gps, PJ (16%). Again, this is likely because CB is more water limited than PJ.

However, we have a limited dataset (2004–2008) and narrative christmas vacation, do not include the severe drought year of 2007. Given the importance of precipitation timing on gps production and population dynamics (Went 1948 ; Bowers 1987 ; Brown 2002 ; Levine et al. 2008 ), additional years of data would be needed to fully understand the interacting effects of soil N and precipitation on production. An additional factor that may confound our results is that the four sites are spread throughout JTNP in areas with different soil textures, amounts of rock cover, and paper on identity theft, long-term patterns of precipitation and N deposition. Statement Gps? These site characteristics are known to impact community composition (Noy-Meir 1973 ; Wood et al. 2005 ; Kelly and Goulden 2008 ), the on identity, effect of thesis gps, which is observed through the on child obesity, PJ CART analyses where Site is a significant explanatory variable of both exotic grass and native forb cover. In spite of differences between the sites, there are consistent results regarding the response of native forb cover to soil N. Native forb cover is greatest at statement, all sites except PJ-high N when soil N is less than 3.8–4.0 g N m ?2 (Online resource 2), suggesting that above this soil N level native forbs are either directly harmed or outcompeted by nitrophilous species such as invasive grasses (Brooks 2003 ; Salo et al. 2005 ). At PJ-high N, the greatest percent cover of topics, native forbs occurs under low-N conditions (0.4 g m ?2 ) and in the influence of pine trees. The second highest cover of native forbs at this site is under intermediate soil N levels, 1.5 g m ?2 N 3.8 g m ?2 , which is consistent with the threshold identified at the other three sites. The garden experiment also indicates that native forbs benefit from inputs of thesis, N between 1.5 and 3 g m ?2 , supporting the findings from other studies showing that native forbs in arid environments are N limited (Romney et al. Essay Music? 1978 ; Mun and Whitford 1989 ; Salo et al.

2005 ). Exotic grass cover is more influenced by precipitation than native forb cover (Online resource 3), particularly at PJ-low N and CB-high N where there is thesis, inherently low grass cover. When grass cover is high, soil N concentrations as low as 0.9 g m ?2 promote increased grass cover but no threshold of soil N emerged as with the native forbs. Paper Theft? It is unclear whether the thesis, lack of a soil N threshold is due to an inherent property of the resume, exotic grasses or because soil sampling occurred at individual points, resulting in high within-treatment variability and obscuring threshold identification. Understanding the factors promoting grass invasion is particularly important given that exotic grasses are associated with increased fire frequency in the deserts due to their persistent standing litter on the landscape through the dry season when fire threat is greatest (Brown and Minnich 1986 ; Brooks and Minnich 2006 ). Our CART analysis is also useful for statement investigating the factors influencing biomass production and fire thresholds in the desert. There is on identity theft, currently a great deal of uncertainty regarding the amount of fine fuel needed to gps, carry fire through arid landscapes. Studies of fire thresholds in grass-dominated systems have shown that the amount of fine fuel needed to carry fire is between 70 and a high school essay, 150 g m ?2 (Anderson 1982 ; Scifres and Hamilton 1993 ; Minnich and Dezzani 1998 ; Fenn et al.

2003a ). As a first approximation, we set the fire threshold for both ecosystem types at 100 g m ?2 and found that the conditions leading to biomass production above this threshold are high amounts of rain in CB, and high amounts of rain combined with high amounts of soil N in PJ (Fig. 3 ). Although years with greater fine fuel buildup increase the fire risk in both vegetation types (Brown and Minnich 1986 ; Rogers and Vint 1987 ; Brooks and Minnich 2006 ), PJ is thesis statement, more prone to history of gospel music, burning than CB due to greater amounts of woody fuels (Brooks and Matchett 2006 ; Brooks and thesis statement gps, Minnich 2006 ). Thus, it is likely that the fine fuel threshold is closer to the low range (70 g m ?2 ) in narrative essay about christmas vacation PJ and the high range (150 g m ?2 ) in CB. When we re-evaluate the CART results with these adjusted fire thresholds, we find that the thesis, only case when the fire threshold is paper obesity, exceeded at CB is when SOP is greater than 1 mm and NDP is greater than 93 mm. The precipitation record from the past 75 years indicates that this precipitation pattern occurred 17 times, primarily in the late 1930s–1940s and the late 1960s to early 1980s. This is consistent with the findings of Brown and Minnich ( 1986 ) who determined that fires in CB increased during the late 1970s, which they attributed to increased rainfall and exotic grass invasion in that period. Brooks and Matchett ( 2006 ) examined factors influencing fire spread in the Mojave Desert and showed that the high-elevation woodlands and desert montane zones show little change in the size distribution of fire in response to rainfall amounts because of the amount of woody biomass in statement gps these zones. A High Essay? In the middle elevation zone they found that native fuels are generally just below the thesis, threshold allowing fire spread and thus are influenced by essay of gospel music, increased precipitation. Our PJ sites are in statement gps between the essay history of gospel music, high-elevation woodlands and mid-elevation zone examined by statement, Brooks and Matchett ( 2006 ) indicating that there is likely a fine fuel threshold for mri thesis our sites that may be as low as 70 g m ?2 . There are four cases when biomass exceeds this threshold; three are when NDP is greater than 73 mm and one is when precipitation is intermediate but soil N is high, greater than 3.2 g m ?2 . In the thesis, garden experiment invasive grass biomass was greater in all water treatments when soil N was 3 g m ?2 , although the greatest biomass was observed under the highest precipitation and N. Similarly, a field fertilization experiment in narrative christmas vacation the Mojave by Brooks ( 2003 ) showed that invasive grass biomass was largest when 3.2 g N m ?2 was added in the year with 300% above-average December precipitation, whereas no effect was observed when that amount of gps, N was added in a year with average December precipitation.

Together these results indicate that, in average years, soil N must be greater than 3 g m ?2 for the fire threshold to be reached. Studies of fire in essay on the of gospel other arid and statement gps, semi-arid regions have linked fire frequency with wet years that were followed by research obesity, periods of statement gps, below-average precipitation (Swetnam and Betancourt 1998 ; Grassino-Mayer and Swetnam 2000; Harris et al. 2008 ). Thus, with the exception of areas under very high N deposition loads, PJ in business resume tips transitional mid- to thesis, high-elevation zones may be unlikely to burn in the absence of a period of wet years. One purpose of the narrative essay about vacation, CART analysis was to statement, understand the term on identity, influence of precipitation timing on invasive grass and native forb cover. Climate change models indicate that precipitation variability is likely to increase across the southwestern United States and that the timing of precipitation may also shift (Lenihan et al. 2003 ; Bell et al. 2004 ; Bell and Sloan 2006 ). Gps? Such changes in the precipitation regime may favor either invasive grasses or native forbs if there are differences in the responses to precipitation timing by these two groups. Germination studies have shown that the term, common invasive grasses at thesis statement gps, our sites tend to topics, germinate rapidly with small inputs of rain and without strict temperature requirements (Beatley 1974 ; Gutterman 1994 ; Salo 2004 ). In contrast, native winter forbs have strict germination requirements, generally needing at least 25 mm of thesis statement gps, precipitation and cold nighttime temperatures (Juhren et al.

1956 ; Gutterman 1994 ; Levine et al. 2008 ). The exception is a small group of summer-germinating plants that flower during the paper obesity, following spring (Went 1948 ). In years of gps, late-August early-September rains, individuals from this species group can grow very large and make up a significant portion of the biomass (Went 1948 ). The CART model for CB native forb biomass indicates that NDP 28 mm provides conditions favorable for native forb cover, with the topics, greatest cover observed in combination with SOP 56 mm. Thesis Statement Gps? These results lend support to the findings that fall precipitation of at least 25 mm allows desert native plants to germinate, and that under conditions of writing school admissions, early fall precipitation summer-germinating spring-flowering annuals can greatly increase native cover. For CB invasive grasses, JFP and MAP have equal explanatory power for the first split, indicating that invasive grasses are favored not only by a wet winter, but an extended rainy season. Our garden experiment resulted in an extended growing season in the high-water plots since natural precipitation ended in gps late February. Essay? The results from this controlled experiment show that by prolonging the growing season, the individual biomass of B. madritensis continues to increase, which translates to increased cover in thesis the field. Unlike in CB, PJ native forb cover is more influenced by about vacation, late fall (NDP) and thesis statement, early winter (JFP) rain, while invasive grasses are influenced by SOP in the high-N site and NDP/JFP at the low-N site. The reason for the virtual flip in the seasonality effects on invasive grass and native forb cover between CB and PJ may be due to the influence of temperature. Writing A High School Admissions? The high-elevation PJ sites are much colder than the statement gps, low-elevation CB sites, and as such exhibit later season maturation of native forbs in the spring. Temperatures are rarely cold enough to result in decreased survival of writing a high admissions, native forb seedlings once they have germinated (Juhren et al.

1956 ), but having sufficient moisture in the late winter months appears to allow the rosettes to grow, resulting in thesis gps larger individuals and total cover at peak. The invasive grass cover in paper theft our PJ sites is thesis, primarily governed by site effects, making it difficult to draw generalizations based on our data. Obesity? Additional plot-scale measurements on soil and thesis, landscape characteristics might be useful in business resume further understanding the factors controlling invasive grass cover in this region. We combined a garden experiment, where the invasive grass B. madritensis and statement, the native forb A. tessellata were grown in monoculture, with a multi-year field fertilization of natural vegetation experiment to examine the interaction between soil N and writing essay, water availability on production of desert winter annuals. We found that while native forbs and invasive grasses are limited by statement, water availability, the response to increased soil N is dependent on factors such as the a high admissions essay, degree of water limitation, site characteristics (e.g., soil texture, soil C), and degree of grass invasion. However, our results also show that in some cases added soil N increases production above the statement gps, fire threshold, thereby increasing the risk of fire in some polluted areas.

In addition to research on child obesity, increasing fire risk, increased soil N promoted invasive grasses and decreased native forb cover at some sites. These results provide further evidence that native forb and shrub communities, and thesis gps, the associated wildflower displays, may be threatened by non-native grass invasions particularly in areas such as JTNP that are subjected to increased N deposition. This research was funded by the National Park Service PMIS no. 72123, National Science Foundation DEB 04-21530, the Community Foundation of San Bernardino and paper theft, Riverside Counties, and statement gps, a grant from the business tips, University of thesis gps, California, Riverside Graduate Division. Guidelines for a Great Thesis Statement A thesis statement is the GPS

Introduction to statement gps Management Report. In large organisations, management represents the term paper theft, key factor that propels businesses and industries to attain growth and development. The rise of modern organisations is not only due to the rapid advancements in technology and communications but on statement gps the ability of competent managers to term paper on identity theft struggle and confront emerging challenges to the organisation’s very existence. There are a variety of views about management. Practically, the term management refers to planning, organizing, leading, and controlling of organisational activities and thesis statement their resources (McNamara). Planning involves identifying goals, objectives, methods, resources, and paper obesity responsibilities and dates for the completion of tasks. Thesis Statement Gps! Planning and organizing human resources can be quite a challenge given the complex structure of term paper theft, today’s organisations. Establishing the strategic direction and vision for gps, the organisation involves influencing people to follow that direction and share the same vision.

Management is also about controlling the human resource processes, the human resource systems, and the human resource structure of the organisation in order to make it more adaptable to change in its internal and external environment. This report will try to make an writing school admissions essay analysis of the existing organisational culture, structure, and management style of statement gps, Harvester Restaurant. It is presented with adequate emphasis on essay history of gospel how management, when confronted with a new reality, was able to thesis statement identify its weaknesses in business resume tips, its management structure, style, and existing culture and the corresponding remedies and management initiatives through empowerment and other changes in the style and structure of their management. Harvester Restaurant is a wholly owned brand within the Forte Restaurants Division and was recently purchased by the Bass Group (Ashness and Lashley, p. 18). By 1995, it had 78 chains of restaurants around the United Kingdom. Today, it has over 2,000 drinking and entertainment establishments (Wikipedia). Its previous management setup was thought to be obstructing the way its employees commit themselves to the quality of their service to statement gps customers. Management Structure and Problems. Harvester was initially managed in a traditional hierarchical manner.

Each restaurant unit was managed by a restaurant manager and essay about vacation two to three assistant managers. This management team was responsible for statement, the day-to-day running of the unit which includes ordering stocks, maintaining the security of materials and money, cashing up and banking takings, locking premises, staffing and management of all the people within the unit (Ashness and Lashley, 1995). The restaurant unit manager reports directly to a regional manager. Four regional managers are directly accountable to the operations managers (north and south divisions) while the essay, operations managers report to the managing director. Gps! This structure produced five layers between the customers and the managing director. The management team then became aware of the new emerging demands and discerning attitude of customers. At this point, there seems to be a problem with the layers of management. In this structure, decisions are made at the top and research paper on child obesity passed down through several intermediaries.

Senior managers decide what’s best for customers which employees follow without hesitation. But according to gps studies made, people resist solutions imposed by people who lack familiarity with day-to-day operations (Harvard Business Essentials, 2003). Today’s organisational structures need to mri thesis topics have collaboration between willing and motivated parties in order to effect changes. The problem then is that in this structure, senior level managers are better at telling people what to do than at getting employees to collaborate and made significant contributions. Under this Harvester management setup, a lot of problems emerged. There was low commitment from their employees. The rate of turnover was high. The organisation itself was too dependent on gps their managers for resume, decisions. Resources and skills were under-utilized (Ashness and Lashley, 1995). Too much attention was given to processes and not on the attentive values.

Employees, who are usually the ones in direct contact with customers and who usually hold direct knowledge on the day-to-day operations are usually not listened to. But there are other factors which might have been influencing these happenings. According to Duck (2001), most leaders do not have enough vertical contact with others in the organisation or enough time to thesis statement stay in touch. She notes that most members of the management team of organisations are not actively using information networks that keep them up-to-date on what’s happening and who’s saying what. While most leaders recognize the value of history of gospel music, being connected with people at every level and of getting unfiltered information, very few know how to make it happen without investing more time than they feel they have available. In short, the organisation’s strategy was not consistent with the management of its untapped human and intellectual resources. While it has set up long term goals and mechanisms to satisfy its customers, it has failed to thesis address their immediate needs and concerns.

It is not altogether uncommon for conflict to occur inside the organisation. Conflict occurs when individuals or groups are not obtaining what they need or want. People in organisations bring with them different educational backgrounds, interests, preferences, religious and ethical values, and personalities. Usually, it causes the flow of real communication which results to the identification and resolution of problems. In a hierarchical structure however, there is a greater chance that conflict would occur. The communication process passing through different layers does not always guarantee that the right information flows correctly. On Child! Conflict resolution usually hinges around a certain layer of management. Thesis Gps! The situation at Harvester is no different. There was selective communication going on. Accountability was limited to a few.

The present management setup has instilled a culture not bent on proactively managing the focus on guests. There was a lack of trust and feeling of ownership prevailing at this time. Essay On The History Music! Information was not valued either. In planning for thesis, change, it is mri thesis topics, important to identify the dimensions of change. Theory E and gps Theory O includes the organisational goals, leadership, and focus (Harvard Business Essentials, 2003). Essay On The Music! Theory E and Theory O Change involves embracing the paradox between economic values and organisational capability. It also encourages setting management directions from the top while encouraging participation from the people below. It also focuses simultaneously on the hard (structures and systems) and the soft (corporate culture).
