bill viola essay The first video viewed was Migration , Viola's 1976 film. He begins the film with sound which seemed to be a common theme in all of the film viewed. There was a sound of faint church bells with the vision of a distorted image. As the bells got louder the image became clearer. You are left with an image of a man, which is Bill Viola sitting at a table. The head fades and is out of the shot.

You are left with his body behind a bowl, cereal box and oranges. The shot begins to close in but not in a normal zoom fashion. It is as if it is a migration. You see the movement of the zoom with a double image which blends into one after a moment. Then you see his face again. This time it is in the reflection of the bowl. There is again the same migration effect done to the image of almost a small faucet which has drops of water dripping into the bowl. Many steps are taken to zoom into this. At the end you again see the reflection of Viola in the drop of water. It is interesting how he uses the repetition of his image each time in water. Cancer Killer Essays? His face is homework grids also decreasing in size each time you see it.

First it is his actual face, then in the bowl and finally in water drops. It is almost as if with migration he feels that his reflection is not worth that large of a space. Bill Viola's The Reflecting Pool created from 1977 to 1979 is largely concerned with water. The camera angle of this film never moves. The camera is positioned in cancer, the same place for the entirety of the piece. In the beginning of the film you see a square pool which has the color and feel of an impressionist painting.

You hear the sound of outside, both airplanes and running water. From the woods you slowly see a man appear and he stands by the edge of the pool. The viewer is captivated with him standing there staring at the pool. Then there is a freeze frame of the man doing a cannon ball into the pool. There is movement of water as if something had dropped but the thesis course image is still lingering above the pool. Cancer Killer Essays? A reflection of a person walking is able to be made out in the water.

There is no person walking to be causing that reflection though. Then you see the db2 resume frozen image over the water disappear. Now there are two reflections walking. Again there is no figure to cause such a reflection. A Silent Essays? There are ripples of for research paper, water in the pool and then the single image reflection appears again. Then the a silent person that was in the cannon ball freeze frame swims to the edge of the pool and get out, walking back into the woods. The Reflecting Pool seems to sample interview for research, be a full circle. Starting from the woods and ending in the woods. Is this an analogy for cancer a silent killer essays life--starting at one point and ending at thesis course, another with many strange things occurring in between?

Sometimes there is no explanation for essays incidents, just like the reflections and you don't necessarily need to see the splash to believe that when you jump you eventually are going to land. The person getting out thesis course, of the pool was a way of answering whether or not he was in a silent essays, that pool. This film made you think about the process of a good statement, human thought. A Silent Killer Essays? How everything doesn't need to physically be shown to know they are there. During Viola's time in thesis, Japan he created Ancient of a silent killer, Days (1979-81). This film begins with the sound of cars and an image of fire. You view the fire and when it is extinguished a man nails something to the table which was in how to a personal reflection, the fire. This section seems to be displayed backwards from the original firing. After the nailing a cup, clock and teapot appear. The shot then switches to a monument. Cancer? Now the sounds of wind entertain your ears.

Much time is spent viewing the monument. As in The Reflecting Pool , the shot is at the same viewpoint the whole time. You are left viewing different skies, background of pastel purple, pink and blue. White clouds increase as the andreas film advances. As it progresses you see different groups of figures walking around to the monument in the distance. Then the shot goes to night and you are left with the view of cancer, a city and cars driving. Defiantly a unique angle atop of a building and moving till you are viewing it upside down. Db2 Resume? There is a great contrast of light sky and dark buildings. Then you are taken out of the city back to the country with a snow covered mountain and a kid squatting playing in a bush. There is a sound of something and the kid runs away.

The color changes over the whole screen. That view of the mountain is now placed on the side of a building on a television in the city. The image changes to windsurfing. The shot moves into the crowd with the sound of someone singing. This all slows down, then stops and goes to a room inside with the view of a clock ticking, a picture on the wall and flowers. You hear people talking, someone sneezes and then the picture disappear and the shot fades. There is an interesting bond between the beginning and then end of this film. The beginning shot has a clock which appears again in the ending. This seems to have a huge correlation with the title being Ancient of Days . Viola connects both the physical and a silent mental landscapes allowing you to spark feeling you may not always be connected to. There is a feeling of losing the homework grids simpler things the way he goes from the lush landscapes to the obscure angle of the fast paced city. Also the way this film ending in a house where the frame goes black really brings the cancer essays point back home.

Viola's 1976 film The Space Between Teeth was the last film viewed. It again begins with this use of running water and then the man sits in the chair. Thesis Course? The guy screams and then sits back to a relaxed position. This is repeated as the shot is slowly moved down a long hallway. Killer? He still screams with a repeated break in between. After he screams you can still hear the questions paper echo as if it is trapped in the hallway. With the camera shooting the view at the end of the a silent essays hall way you can see in the distance the a good thesis statement man still sitting in the chair. On the left side of the hallway the cancer a silent essays windows cast light that looks like gaps in between teeth. There is a black shadow cased from the walls which look like teeth. I find that interesting and would like to how to, find out if that is where the name came from. For a good portion of the rest of the film the camera zooms back into the guy's mouth each time he screams then zooms back out.

Each time the zoom doesn't go as far back until you are close to cancer a silent killer, the starting point in which there is how to a personal reflection essay shots of the kitchen. It zooms in cancer a silent killer, slowly to a bowl of cereal and a radio is playing in the background. Homework Grids? There is then a man at the sink washing dishes but he puts the dish back into the full sink. Then there is a photo in a lake of water, a wave crashes and helicopter end the film. This film is mostly in black and white and portrays the view of memories he has.

The film again ends with water but this time crashing into a picture that disappears. Bill Viola uses the repetition of images through out his films. He uses the idea of killer, water as an important part of his pieces. They help to portray a strong feeling that Viola has and homework grids gives the viewer something that you are able to relate to. He lets you be able to have both an internal and cancer a silent killer external view of his works.

The water seems to drown the idea that he is trying to portray and almost give closer to the viewer. He has an unbelievable creativity which he is homework grids able to let the viewer see through his works.

Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Marcus Tullius Cicero was born on January 3, 106 B.C.E. and was murdered on December 7, 43 B.C.E. His life coincided with the a silent decline and fall of the Roman Republic, and he was an important actor in many of the significant political events of his time, and his writings are now a valuable source of information to us about those events. He was, among other things, an orator, lawyer, politician, and philosopher. Thesis Course. Making sense of his writings and understanding his philosophy requires us to keep that in mind. Cancer A Silent. He placed politics above philosophical study; the latter was valuable in its own right but was even more valuable as the means to a personal essay more effective political action. The only cancer a silent killer periods of his life in which he wrote philosophical works were the times he was forcibly prevented from taking part in sample interview, politics. While Cicero is currently not considered an exceptional thinker, largely on the (incorrect) grounds that his philosophy is derivative and unoriginal, in cancer a silent, previous centuries he was considered one of the thesis course great philosophers of the ancient era, and cancer a silent killer essays, he was widely read well into the 19th century. Probably the most notable example of andreas thesis his influence is St.

Augustine's claim that it was Cicero's Hortensius (an exhortation to philosophy, the text of which is unfortunately lost) that turned him away from his sinful life and towards philosophy and ultimately to God. A Silent Essays. Augustine later adopted Cicero's definition of interview questions for research paper a commonwealth and used it in his argument that Christianity was not responsible for the destruction of Rome by the barbarians. Cicero's political career was a remarkable one. At the time, high political offices in Rome, though technically achieved by winning elections, were almost exclusively controlled by a group of wealthy aristocratic families that had held them for many generations. Cicero's family, though aristocratic, was not one of them, nor did it have great wealth. But Cicero had a great deal of political ambition; at cancer a very young age he chose as his motto the same one Achilles was said to have had: to always be the best and overtop the rest.

Lacking the advantages of a proper ancestry, there were essentially only two career options open to him. One was a military career, since military success was thought to result from exceptional personal qualities and could lead to popularity and paper, therefore political opportunity (as was the a silent killer essays case much later for American presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Dwight D. Eisenhower). Cicero, however, was no soldier. He hated war, and thesis course, served in the military only very briefly as a young man. Instead, Cicero chose a career in the law. To prepare for a silent killer essays, this career, he studied jurisprudence, rhetoric, and philosophy. When he felt he was ready, he began taking part in legal cases. A career in the law could lead to political success for several reasons, all of which are still relevant today. First, a lawyer would gain a great deal of experience in making speeches.

Second, he (there were no female lawyers in Rome) could also gain exposure and popularity from high-profile cases. Finally, a successful lawyer would build up a network of statement political connections, which is important now but was even more important in Cicero's time, when political competition was not conducted along party lines or on the basis of ideology, but instead was based on loose, shifting networks of personal friendships and commitments. Cicero proved to be an excellent orator and lawyer, and a shrewd politician. He was elected to a silent essays each of the sample paper principle Roman offices (quaestor, aedile, praetor, and consul) on a silent killer his first try and at the earliest age at which he was legally allowed to run for them. Having held office made him a member of the Roman Senate. This body had no formal authority -- it could only offer advice -- but its advice was almost always followed. How To A Personal. He was, as can be imagined, very proud of his successes. (Though this is not the place for a long discussion of Roman government, it should be noted that the Roman republic was not a democracy. It was really more of an oligarchy than anything else, with a few men wielding almost all economic and cancer essays, political power).

During his term as consul (the highest Roman office) in 63 B.C.E. he was responsible for unraveling and exposing the conspiracy of Catiline, which aimed at taking over the Roman state by force, and five of the conspirators were put to death without trial on Cicero's orders. Cicero was proud of this too, claiming that he had singlehandedly saved the commonwealth; many of his contemporaries and many later commentators have suggested that he exaggerated the magnitude of his success. But there can be little doubt that Cicero enjoyed widespread popularity at this time - though his policy regarding the Catilinarian conspirators had also made him enemies, and the executions without trial gave them an opening. The next few years were very turbulent, and in 60 B.C.E. Julius Caesar, Pompey, and Crassus (often referred to today as the First Triumvirate) combined their resources and db2 resume, took control of Roman politics. Recognizing his popularity and a silent, talents, they made several attempts to get Cicero to join them, but Cicero hesitated and eventually refused, preferring to remain loyal to homework grids the Senate and the idea of the killer essays Republic. This left him open to attacks by his enemies, and in January of 58 B.C.E. one of them, the tribune Clodius (a follower of Caesar's), proposed a law to be applied retroactively stating that anyone who killed a Roman citizen without trial would be stripped of their citizenship and forced into exile.

This proposal led to rioting and homework grids, physical attacks on Cicero, who fled the city. The law passed. Cicero was forbidden to live within 500 miles of cancer Italy, and all his property was confiscated. This exile, during which Cicero could not take part in how to write reflection, politics, provided the time for his first period of killer essays sustained philosophical study as an adult. After roughly a year and a half of statement exile, the cancer killer essays political conditions changed, his property was restored to him, and he was allowed to return to Rome, which he did to great popular approval, claiming that the Republic was restored with him. This was also treated by many as an absurd exaggeration. Cicero owed a debt to the triumvirate for paper, ending his exile (and for not killing him), and for the next eight years he repaid that debt as a lawyer. Because he still could not engage in politics, he also had time to continue his studies of philosophy, and between 55 and 51 he wrote On the cancer essays Orator , On the Republic , and On the Laws . The triumvirate, inherently unstable, collapsed with the death of thesis course Crassus and in 49 B.C.E. Caesar crossed the Rubicon River, entering Italy with his army and igniting a civil war between himself and Pompey (Caesar's own account of this war still survives). Cicero was on cancer killer essays Pompey's side, though halfheartedly. He felt that at this point the question was not whether Rome would be a republic or an empire but whether Pompey or Caesar would be Emperor, and homework grids, he believed that it would make little difference, for it would be a disaster in either case.

Caesar and his forces won in 48 B.C.E., and Caesar became the first Roman emperor. He gave Cicero a pardon and allowed him to return to Rome in a silent killer essays, July of 47 B.C.E., but Cicero was forced to stay out of politics. Most of the how to a personal reflection rest of his life was devoted to studying and writing about philosophy, and he produced the killer essays rest of his philosophical writings during this time. Caesar was murdered by a group of senators on the Ides of March in 44 B.C.E. Cicero was a witness to the murder, though he was not a part of the conspiracy. The murder led to questions another power struggle in which Mark Antony (of Antony and Cleopatra fame), Marcus Lepidus, and Octavian (later called Augustus) were the key players.

It also gave Cicero, who still hoped that the Republic could be restored, the opportunity for what is considered his finest hour as a politician. Killer. With Caesar dead, the how to Senate once again mattered, and it was to the Senate that Cicero made the series of speeches known as the Philippics (named after the speeches the Greek orator Demosthenes made to rouse the Athenians to fight Philip of cancer essays Macedon). These speeches called for the Senate to aid Octavian in overcoming Antony (Cicero believed that Octavian, still a teenager, would prove to be a useful tool who could be discarded by the Senate once his purpose was served). However, Antony, Lepidus, and how to, Octavian were able to come to terms and agreed to share power. Cancer Killer Essays. Each of them had enemies that he wanted eliminated, and homework grids, as part of the power-sharing deal each got to eliminate those enemies. Antony put not only Cicero but also his son, his brother, and his nephew on the list of those to be killed (the Philippics are not very nice to him at all, especially the Second Philippic ). A Silent Killer Essays. Though Octavian owed his success in part to a good statement Cicero, he chose not to extend his protection to Cicero and his family. Essays. Cicero, his brother, and db2 resume, his nephew tried somewhat belatedly to flee Italy. His brother and nephew turned aside to cancer a silent collect more money for the trip, and were killed. Cicero kept going. Plutarch describes the end of Cicero's life: Cicero heard [his pursuers] coming and homework grids, ordered his servants to set the litter [in which he was being carried] down where they were.

He…looked steadfastly at his murderers. He was all covered in dust; his hair was long and disordered, and his face was pinched and wasted with his anxieties - so that most of those who stood by covered their faces while Herennius was killing him. His throat was cut as he stretched his neck out from the litter….By Antony's orders Herennius cut off his head and his hands. Antony then had Cicero's head and hands nailed to the speaker's podium in the Senate as a warning to others. Killer Essays. Cicero's son, also named Marcus, who was in Greece at this time, was not executed.

He became consul in 30 B.C.E. Db2 Resume. under Octavian, who had defeated Antony after the Second Triumvirate collapsed. As consul, the younger Marcus got to announce Antony's suicide to the Senate. It is a silent killer essays unfortunate that we have no record of this speech. While Cicero is currently not considered an exceptional thinker, largely on the (incorrect) grounds that his philosophy is werr thesis derivative and unoriginal, in previous centuries he was considered one of the great philosophers of the a silent essays ancient era, and he was widely read well into the 19th century. Probably the most notable example of his influence is a good thesis statement St. Augustine's claim that it was Cicero's Hortensius (an exhortation to philosophy, the text of which is unfortunately lost) that turned him away from essays, his sinful life and towards philosophy and ultimately to God. Augustine later adopted Cicero's definition of a commonwealth and used it in his argument that Christianity was not responsible for the destruction of Rome by the barbarians. How To Essay. Further discussion of Cicero's influence on later philosophers can be found in MacKendrick, Chapter 20 and Appendix. Cicero subordinated philosophy to politics, so it should not surprise us to discover that his philosophy had a political purpose: the cancer a silent killer defense, and if possible the improvement, of the Roman Republic.

The politicians of his time, he believed, were corrupt and no longer possessed the virtuous character that had been the main attribute of Romans in the earlier days of Roman history. Sample Questions. This loss of virtue was, he believed, the cause of the Republic's difficulties. He hoped that the leaders of Rome, especially in the Senate, would listen to his pleas to renew the Republic. This could only happen if the Roman elite chose to cancer a silent improve their characters and place commitments to individual virtue and social stability ahead of db2 resume their desires for fame, wealth, and power. Killer. Having done this, the elite would enact legislation that would force others to adhere to similar standards, and the Republic would flourish once again. Whether this belief shows an thesis course admirable commitment to the principles of cancer a silent killer virtue and nobility or a blindness to the nature of the exceedingly turbulent and violent politics of his time, or perhaps both, is impossible to statement say with certainty. Cicero, therefore, tried to use philosophy to bring about his political goals. Like most intellectual endeavors in Cicero's time, philosophy was an activity in which Greece (and especially Athens) still held the lead. The Romans were more interested in practical matters of law, governance, and military strategy than they were in philosophy and art (many of Cicero's writings include justifications for a silent essays, his study of andreas philosophy and a silent essays, arguments that it ought to be taken seriously).

But for Cicero to really use philosophy effectively, he needed to make it accessible to a Roman audience. Homework Grids. He did this in part by cancer a silent killer essays translating Greek works into Latin, including inventing Latin words where none seemed suitable for Greek concepts (including the Latin words which give us the English words morals, property, individual, science, image, and a good thesis, appetite), and in part by a silent killer essays drawing on homework grids and idealizing Roman history to provide examples of appropriate conduct and to illustrate the arguments of philosophy. He also summarized in Latin many of the beliefs of the primary Greek philosophical schools of the time (and he is the source of much of our knowledge about these schools). Killer. These included the Academic Skeptics, Peripatetics, Stoics, and Epicureans. Cicero was well acquainted with all these schools, and had teachers in each of them at different times of his life. But he professed allegiance throughout his life to the Academy. 4. Cicero and the Academic Skeptics. In Cicero's time there were in fact two schools claiming to be descended from the First Academy, established by Plato. Db2 Resume. Cicero studied briefly in both the Old Academy and the New Academy; the differences between the two need not concern us. What they shared was their basic commitment to a silent killer skepticism: a belief that human beings cannot be certain in their knowledge about the world, and therefore no philosophy can be said to be true. The Academic Skeptics offered little in the way of positive argument themselves; they mostly criticized the arguments of others.

This can be annoying, but it requires real mental abilities, including the ability to see all sides of an db2 resume issue and to understand and accept that any belief, no matter how cherished, is only provisional and a silent essays, subject to change later if a better argument presents itself. It is the approach which underlies the modern scientific method, though the Academics did not use it in that way. Even something like evolution, for which there is mountains of db2 resume evidence and seemingly no resonable alternative, is treated as a theory subject to change if needed rather than an eternal truth. And it is essays this approach which Cicero embraced. This is statement not surprising if we consider again why he was interested in philosophy in cancer essays, the first place. As a lawyer, he would need to see as many sides of an argument as possible in order to argue his clients' cases effectively. He would have to marshal all the available evidence in homework grids, a methodical way, so as to make the essays strongest possible case, and he would have to accept that he might at any time have to deal with new evidence or new issues, forcing him to totally reconsider his strategies.

As a politician, he would need a similar grasp of the issues and a similar degree of flexibility in order to speak and to act effectively. Db2 Resume. A lawyer or politician who fanatically sticks to a particular point of view and cannot change is not likely to be successful. Adopting the teachings of the Academy also allowed Cicero to pick and choose whatever he wanted from the other philosophical schools, and he claims to do this at killer various points in his writings. Finally, his allegiance to the Academy helps to explain his use of the dialogue form: it enables Cicero to db2 resume put a number of arguments in cancer, the mouths of others without having to endorse any particular position himself. However, Cicero did not consistently write as a member of the Academy. Skepticism can, if taken to extremes, lead to complete inaction (if we can't be certain of the correctness of our decisions or of thesis course our actions, why do anything at all?) which was incompatible with Cicero's commitment to political activity. Even if it isn't taken that far, it can still be dangerous.

It may not be a problem if trained, knowledgeable philosophers are skeptical about things like whether the gods exist or whether the a silent laws are just. But if people in general are skeptical about these things, they may end up behaving lawlessly and immorally (see Aristophanes' Clouds for a portrayal of this). Thus, while Cicero is sample questions willing to accept Academic Skepticism in some areas, he is not willing to do so when it comes to ethics and killer essays, politics. For doctrines in db2 resume, these areas, he turns to the Stoics and cancer killer, Peripatetics. 5. Cicero and thesis, Stoicism and Peripateticism. Cicero believed that these two schools taught essentially the same things, and that the cancer a silent difference between them was whether virtue was the andreas werr only thing human beings should pursue or whether it was merely the a silent killer best thing to homework grids be pursued. According to the first view, things like money and health have no value; according to the second, they have value but nowhere near enough to justify turning away from virtue to attain them. This was a difference with little practical consequence, so far as Cicero was concerned, and there is no need to take it up here. Since, according to the teachings of the Academy, Cicero was free to accept any argument that he found convincing, he could readily make use of a silent killer essays Stoic teachings, and he did so particularly when discussing politics and ethics. In the Laws , for example, he explicitly says that he is setting aside his skepticism, for it is dangerous if people do not believe unhesitatingly in the sanctity of the laws and db2 resume, of justice.

Thus he will rely on Stoicism instead. He puts forth Stoic doctrines not dogmatically, as absolutely and always true, but as the best set of beliefs so far developed. We ought to cancer a silent adhere to them because our lives, both individually and db2 resume, collectively, will be better if we do. It is essentially Stoic ethical teachings that Cicero urges the Roman elite to adopt. Stoicism as Cicero understood it held that the gods existed and loved human beings. Both during and a silent killer essays, after a person's life, the gods rewarded or punished human beings according to their conduct in sample questions for research, life. The gods had also provided human beings with the gift of reason. Since humans have this in common with the gods, but animals share our love of pleasure, the Stoics argued, as Socrates had, that the best, most virtuous, and most divine life was one lived according to reason, not according to the search for pleasure. This did not mean that humans had to shun pleasure, only that it must be enjoyed in the right way. For example, it was fine to enjoy sex, but not with another man's wife. It was fine to enjoy wine, but not to the point of shameful drunkenness.

Finally, the Stoics believed that human beings were all meant to cancer a silent killer essays follow natural law, which arises from reason. The natural law is also the source of all properly made human laws and communities. Thesis Statement. Because human beings share reason and cancer a silent killer, the natural law, humanity as a whole can be thought of as a kind of community, and because each of us is part of a group of human beings with shared human laws, each of us is thesis also part of a political community. This being the case, we have duties to each of these communities, and the Stoics recognized an obligation to cancer essays take part in politics (so far as is possible) in order to discharge those duties. The Stoic enters politics not for public approval, wealth, or power (which are meaningless) but in order to improve the communities of which they are a part.

If politics is painful, as it would often prove to be for Cicero, that's not important. What matters is that the virtuous life requires it. For the Epicurean philosophy Cicero had only thesis disdain throughout most of essays his life, though his best friend Atticus was an Epicurean. This disdain leads him to seriously misrepresent its teachings as being based on thesis course the shameless pursuit of base pleasures, such as food, sex, and wine (the modern day equivalent being sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll). However, this is not what Epicurus, who founded the school, or his later followers actually taught. Epicurus did claim that nature teaches us that pleasure is the only human good, and a silent essays, that life should therefore be guided by the pursuit of pleasure. But he meant by homework grids pleasure the absence of pain, including the cancer a silent killer pain caused by desires for wealth, fame, or power. This did not mean living life as one long Bacchanalia. Instead it meant withdrawing from politics and public life and living quietly with friends, engaged in the study of philosophy, which provided the highest pleasure possible (think of a monastery without the Bible and the rigorous discipline). The notion that the life of interview for research paper philosophy is the most pleasant life, of course, also comes from Socrates.

Epicureans were also publicly atheists. Cancer A Silent. Their atheism was based on db2 resume a theory of atomism, which they were the first to propose. Everything in the universe, they argued, was made up of cancer killer essays atoms, including the heavenly bodies; the gods did not exist. This knowledge was not a cause of despair but a cause of joy, they believed, since one of the greatest human pains is the db2 resume pain caused by the fear of death and killer, what lies beyond it. Sample Interview For Research. According to the Epicureans, death simply meant the end of cancer a silent killer essays sensation, as one's atoms came apart. Thus there was no reason to fear it, because there was no divine judgment or afterlife.

The best known Epicurean is Lucretius, a contemporary of Cicero's at Rome who Cicero may have known personally. Lucretius' On the Nature of sample interview questions for research paper Things , available online, sets out Epicurean teachings. It is easy to see why Cicero, a man deeply involved in politics and the pursuit of glory, would find any doctrine that advocated the rejection of public life repulsive. It is also easy to see why someone concerned with the reform of character and conduct would reject public atheism, since fear of divine punishment often prevents people from acting immorally. Cancer. During his forced exile from politics at the end of his life, however, some of his letters claim that he has gone over to Epicureanism, presumably for the reasons he hated it previously. No longer able to take part in public life, the best he could hope for was the cultivation of private life and the pleasures that it had to offer. Since Cicero abandoned this idea as soon as the opportunity to return to public life arose, there is no reason to thesis course take his professed conversion seriously - unless we wish to see in it an example of cancer killer changing his beliefs to reflect changing circumstances, and thus an example of his commitment to the Academy. Cicero's written work can be sorted into three categories. None can be said to represent the true Cicero, and all of andreas werr thesis Cicero's work, we must remember, has a political purpose. This does not make it worthless as philosophy, but it should make us cautious about proclaiming anything in particular to be what Cicero really thought. Also, as an Academic skeptic, Cicero felt free to change his mind about something when a better position presented itself, and this makes it even more difficult to cancer a silent killer essays bring his writing together into a coherent whole.

The first category of Cicero's work is his philosophic writings, many of homework grids which were patterned after Plato's or Aristotle's dialogues. These writings, in chronological order, include On Invention , On the Orator , On the Republic , On the Laws , Brutus , Stoic Paradoxes , The Orator , Consolation , Hortensius , Academics , On Ends , Tusculan Disputations , On the Nature of the Gods , On Divination , On Fate , On Old Age , On Friendship , Topics , On Glory , and On Duties . Unfortunately, several of them have been lost almost entirely ( Hortensius , on the value of philosophy, the Consolation , which Cicero wrote to himself on the death of his beloved daughter Tullia in order to overcome his grief, and On Glory , almost totally lost) and several of the others are available only in fragmentary condition (notably the Laws , which Cicero may never have finished, and the Republic , fragments of which were only discovered in 1820 in the Vatican). These will be discussed in more detail below. Essays. While each of them is thesis course dedicated and addressed to a particular individual or two, they were intended to be read by a wide audience, and even at the end of his life Cicero never gave up entirely on the hope that the Republic and his influence would be restored. Hence these are not purely philosophical writings, but were designed with a political purpose in mind, and we are entitled to wonder whether Cicero is being entirely candid in the opinions that he expresses. Also, the cancer a silent killer dialogue form is statement useful for an author who wishes to express a number of opinions without having to endorse one. As we have seen, Cicero's skepticism would have made this an especially attractive style.

We should not assume too quickly that a particular character speaks for Cicero. Instead we should assume that, unless he explicitly says otherwise, Cicero wanted all the viewpoints presented to be considered seriously, even if some or all of them have weaknesses. The second category is the speeches Cicero made as a lawyer and as a Senator, about 60 of which remain. These speeches provide many insights into Roman cultural, political, social, and intellectual life, as well as glimpses of Cicero's philosophy. Many of killer them also describe the corruption and immorality of the Roman elite. However, they have to be taken with a grain of salt, because Cicero was writing and delivering them in order to achieve some legal outcome and/or political goal and by his own admission was not above saying misleading or inaccurate things if he thought they would be effective. Db2 Resume. In addition, the a silent killer essays speeches that we have are not verbatim recordings of what Cicero actually said, but are versions that he polished later for publication (the modern American analogy would be to the Congressional Record , which allows members of Congress the opportunity to revise the text of their speeches before they are published in the Record ). In some cases (such as the Second Philippic ) the speech was never delivered at all, but was merely published in written form, again with some political goal in andreas, mind. Finally, roughly 900 letters to and from (mostly from) Cicero have been preserved. Cancer Killer. Most of them were addressed to his close friend Atticus or his brother Quintius, but some correspondence to and from some other Romans including famous Romans such as Caesar has also been preserved. How To. The letters often make an interesting contrast to the philosophic dialogues, as they deal for the most part not with lofty philosophical matters but with the mundane calculations, compromises, flatteries, and a silent killer essays, manipulations that were part of politics in Rome and which would be familiar to andreas werr thesis any politician today. It is important to a silent be cautious in drawing conclusions from paper, them about cancer a silent, Cicero's true beliefs since they rely on an understanding between the sender and recipient not available to others, because they are often not the result of full reflection or an attempt at complete clarity and precision (after all, a friend can be counted on to know what you mean), and because many of them, like the speeches, were written with a political purpose in mind that may make them less than fully truthful and straightforward.

Space does not allow us to discuss Cicero's speeches and letters. The serious student of Cicero, however, will not want to ignore them. How To Write Essay. What follows is a brief summary of the main points each of Cicero's philosophical works. Written while Cicero was still a teenager, it is a handbook on oratory. Cicero later dismissed it and argued that his other oratorical works had superceded it. A lengthy treatise, in the form of a dialogue, on the ideal orator. While it is full of detail which can be tedious to those who are not deeply interested in the theory of rhetoric, it also contains useful discussions of the a silent essays nature of and the relationships among law, philosophy, and rhetoric. Cicero places rhetoric above both law and philosophy, arguing that the ideal orator would have mastered both law and philosophy (including natural philosophy) and would add eloquence besides. He argues that in the old days philosophy and rhetoric were taught together, and that it is unfortunate that they have now been separated.

The best orator would also be the best human being, who would understand the correct way to live, act upon it by homework grids taking a leading role in politics, and instruct others in it through speeches, through the example of his life, and through making good laws. This dialogue is, unfortunately, in an extremely mutilated condition. It describes the cancer a silent ideal commonwealth, such as might be brought about by the orator described in On the Orator . In doing so it tries to provide philosophical underpinnings for existing Roman institutions and to a good demonstrate that until the 20th century (the dialogue is set in 129 B.C.E.) Roman history has been essentially the cancer a silent essays increasing perfection of the andreas thesis Republic, which is now superior to cancer a silent any other government because it is a mixed government. By this Cicero means that it combines elements of monarchy, aristocracy, and democracy in the right balance; the contemporary reader may well disagree. But even this government can be destroyed and is being destroyed by the moral decay of the aristocracy. Thus Cicero describes the db2 resume importance of an active life of virtue, the foundations of community, including the community of all human beings, the role of the statesman, and the concept of killer natural law. Homework Grids. It also includes the famous Dream of Scipio. This dialogue is also badly mutilated, and may never have been finished. In it Cicero lays out the laws that would be followed in the ideal commonwealth described in On the cancer a silent essays Republic . Finding the source of homework grids law and justice, he says, requires explaining what nature has given to humans; what a quantity of wonderful things the human mind embraces; for the sake of performing and fulfilling what function we are born and brought into the world; what serves to unite people; and what natural bond there is cancer killer between them. Philosophy teaches us that by nature human beings have reason, that reason enables us to discover the principles of justice, and a good thesis statement, that justice gives us law.

Therefore any valid law is rooted in nature, and any law not rooted in nature (such as a law made by a tyrant) is cancer killer essays no law at all. The gods also share in a personal, reason, and because of this they can be said to be part of cancer a silent killer essays a community with humanity. They care for us, and punish and homework grids, reward us as appropriate. Much of what remains of this dialogue is devoted to essays religious law. This dialogue too is in a mutilated condition. Db2 Resume. It is a history of oratory in Greece and Rome, listing hundreds of orators and killer essays, their distinguishing characteristics, weaknesses as well as strengths. There is also some discussion of thesis oratory in the abstract. Cicero says that the a silent killer essays orator must instruct his listener, give him pleasure, [and] stir his emotions, and, as in On the Orator , that the true orator needs to have instruction in philosophy, history, and law. Such a person will have the tools necessary to become a leader of the commonwealth. This dialogue is less inclined to the argument that the orator must be a good man; for example, Cicero says that orators must be allowed to distort history [i.e. Homework Grids. lie] in cancer killer, order to give more point to a good thesis statement their narrative. Not a dialogue; Cicero lays out cancer six Stoic principles (called paradoxes) which the average listener would not be likely to agree with and tries to make them both understandable and persuasive to such a listener.

It is, he says, an exercise in turning the specialized jargon of the Stoics into plain speech for his own amusement (which obviously does not require Cicero to actually agree with any of the Stoic beliefs). The beliefs discussed are as follows: moral worth is the only good; virtue is sufficient for happiness; all sins and homework grids, virtues are equal; every fool is insane; only the wise man is really free; only the wise man is killer essays really rich. These topics are largely taken up again in the Tusculan Disputations . MacKendrick argues strenuously that this work is far more than an idle amusement, and that it showcases Cicero's rhetorical skills as well as being an attack on his enemies. Written in the form of questions a letter on the topic of the perfect orator, it includes a defense of Cicero's own oratorical style (Cicero was never known for his modesty). It emphasizes that the orator must be able to prove things to the audience, please them, and sway their emotions. It also includes the famous quote To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child.

This text is lost except for fragments cited by other authors. Cicero wrote it to diminish his grief over the death of his daughter Tullia through the use of philosophy. From his letters we know that it was not entirely successful. his text is heavily fragmented and we can determine little more than its broad outline. It is written in order to praise philosophy, which alone can bring true happiness through the development of cancer killer reason and the overcoming of passions. In antiquity it was widely read and very popular; it was instrumental in homework grids, converting St. Augustine to Christianity. The positions of the various philosophical schools on epistemology (how we can perceive and cancer killer essays, understand the andreas werr thesis world) and the possibility of knowing truth are set out and cancer a silent killer, refuted by the participants in this dialogue (of which we have different parts of two editions).

Cicero also incorporates a detailed history of the development of these schools following the death of a good statement Socrates (diagrammed nicely in MacKendrick; see below). The nature of Cicero's own skepticism can be found in a silent killer, this work; the sample interview questions paper reader is left to choose the argument that is most persuasive. A dialogue which sets out the cancer a silent case, pro and con, of the several philosophic schools on the question of the db2 resume end or purpose (what Aristotle called the telos) of human life. For Cicero, and arguably for ancient philosophy generally, this was the a silent most important question: What is the end , the final and ultimate aim, which gives the standard for all principles of right living and of good conduct? Today many are inclined to believe that an answer to this question, if an andreas thesis answer exists at all, must be found in killer essays, religion, but Cicero held that it was a question for db2 resume, philosophy, and this text was meant to killer essays popularize among the Romans the various answers that were being offered at a good thesis the time. As with Academics , the cancer reader must decide which case is most persuasive. Another attempt to popularize philosophy at Rome and homework grids, demonstrate that the Romans and their language had the potential to achieve the very highest levels of a silent philosophy. The first book presents the argument that death is an evil; this argument is then refuted. A Good Statement. The second book presents and refutes the argument that pain is an evil. The third book argues that the cancer wise man will not suffer from homework grids, anxiety and fear.

In the fourth book Cicero demonstrates that the wise man does not suffer from excessive joy or lust. And in the fifth and final book Cicero argues that virtue, found through philosophy, is sufficient for a happy life. These positions are all compatible with Stoicism. This dialogue, along with the next two, was intended by Cicero to killer form a trilogy on religious questions. It offers desciptions of literally dozens of varieties of religion. Emphasis is how to a personal reflection especially placed on the Epicurean view (the gods exist but are indifferent about human beings), which is described and then refuted, and the Stoic view (the gods govern the world, love human beings, and after death reward the good and punish the bad), which is similarly stated and refuted. At the end of the dialogue the cancer essays characters have not reached agreement. This is perhaps the dialogue that best illustrates Cicero's skeptical method. This dialogue too, according to Cicero, is meant to set out arguments both for and against a topic, in sample for research paper, this case the validity of divination (predicting the future through methods such as astrology, reading animal entrails, watching the flight of birds, etc.) without asserting that either side is correct. The case for the validity of divination is presented in the first book and then crushed in the second (in which Cicero himself is the main speaker). While Cicero explicitly says that he reserves judgment, it is hard to conclude that Cicero approved of divination, which he saw as drawing on superstition rather than religion.

Religion was useful because it helped to control human behavior and could be used as a tool for public policy; and in this context divination could be useful too (as when an unwise political decision was prevented by a silent the announcement that the omens were unfavorable). The text is db2 resume fragmented. Cancer A Silent Killer Essays. The topic discussed is whether or not human beings can be said to have free will, so much of the book deals with theories of causation and the meaning of truth and falsehood. Cicero apparently rejects the idea that fate determines all our actions and homework grids, argues that human beings, to a significant extent, have free will. In this dialogue, we learn that the cancer a silent killer essays sufferings of old age do not affect everyone equally but in fact are dependent on character; old men of good character continue to enjoy life, though in different ways than in their youth, while men of bad character have new miseries added to thesis their previous ones. Nothing is more natural than to age and die, and if we are to live in accordance with nature (a Stoic teaching) we should face death calmly. If one has lived well, there are many pleasant memories to enjoy, as well as prestige and cancer killer essays, the intellectual pleasures that are highest of all. This dialogue describes the nature of true friendship, which is possible only between good men, who are virtuous and follow nature. This friendship is based on a good virtue, and while it offers material advantages it does not aim at them or even seek them. The dialogue goes on to describe the bonds of cancer a silent killer friendship among lesser men, which are stronger the more closely they are related but which exist even in more distant relationships. The conclusion is reached that all human beings are bonded together, along with the gods, in a community made up of the thesis course cosmos as a whole and based on shared reason.

There is, however, awareness of the a silent essays fact that in the real world friendship can be a difficult thing to maintain due to political pressures and adversity. It also includes the assertion that Cato was better than Socrates because he is statement praised for deeds, not words, which is perhaps the center of Cicero's personal philosophy (recall that he only wrote about philosophy, rhetoric and so on when political participation was denied to him by cancer killer essays force), as well as the claim that love is homework grids not compatible with fear - a claim that Machiavelli found significant enough to explicitly reject in The Prince . A toolkit for orators on cancer the science of argument, touching on the law, rhetoric, and philosophy, and andreas werr thesis, setting out the various kinds of cancer arguments available to db2 resume the orator, rules of logic, and the kinds of questions he may find himself facing. It has similarities to Aristotle's Topics and part of his Rhetoric . Written in the form of a letter to his son Marcus, then in his late teens and studying philosophy in Athens (though, we can gather from the a silent letters, not studying it all that seriously), but intended from the start to reach a wider audience. Cicero addresses the topic of duty (including both the final purpose of homework grids life, which defines our duties, and the way in which duties should be performed), and says that he will follow the Stoics in essays, this area, but only as his judgment requires. More explicitly, the letter discusses how to determine what is honorable, and which of two honorable things is andreas more honorable; how to determine what is expedient and how to judge between two expedient things; and what to do when the honorable and the expedient seem to conflict.

Cicero asserts that they can only seem to cancer conflict; in reality they never do, and if they seem to it simply shows that we do not understand the situation properly. Interview For Research. The honorable action is the expedient and vice-versa. Cancer A Silent Killer Essays. The bonds among all human beings are described, and young Marcus is homework grids urged to follow nature and wisdom, along with whatever political activity might still be possible, rather than seeking pleasure and indolence. On Duties , written at the end of Cicero's life, in his own name, for the use of his son, pulls together a wide range of material, and is probably the best starting place for someone wanting to get acquainted with Cicero's philosophic works.

Treating a College Admissions Essay Like a First Date. This week, The Choice is in the room, panning for tips, at the annual College Board Conference. High school counselors and admissions officers are always reaching for analogies to convey to killer students (and parents) the purpose of thesis statement, a college admissions essay. But it was a revelation to cancer a silent killer me, at a personal reflection essay, least, when Chad Hemmelgarn, an killer essays English teacher at sample paper, Bexley High School in essays, Columbus, Ohio, put it this way: “It’s kind of like a first date. You’re telling us the stuff that makes you special.”

Mr. Hemmelgarn was speaking this afternoon as part of db2 resume, a panel on the junior-year experience at “Forum 2009 New York,” the a silent killer annual convention of the College Board in New York City. Over the next two and a half days, hundreds of thesis course, counselors and admissions officers will attend dozens of sessions on all aspects of the high school and college-admissions experience. In a series of posts on The Choice, several Times colleagues and I will attempt to pass on cancer killer tips and perspectives from those meetings that we think will be useful to applicants and write a personal, parents, as well as counselors and admissions officers. For example, at cancer essays, the panel on thesis course the junior year, Mr. Cancer A Silent Killer. Hemmelgarn and thesis course, Stephanie Krosnosky, a college counselor at Bexley, suggested that juniors begin their college quest with several seemingly simple steps.

These included using a single sheet of paper to collect the dates of all the a silent essays standardized tests they intended to take, which they would then post on the family refrigerator so that “mom and dad” would make sure they didn’t oversleep that day. But it was on the subject of the college essay that I thought the two gave particularly strong guidance. For example, Mr. Hemmelgarn requires his juniors to write 25 sample college essays — using actual questions from the thesis statement University of cancer killer essays, Chicago and Ohio State, among others — in 25 weeks, at home. His mantra? “Practice makes better.” Mr. Hemmelgarn then reviews with each student the four or five essays that he or she believes might best be developed into their actual college essays in thesis, their senior year. For readers of The Choice who are juniors (or their parents), I see no reason why the same exercise couldn’t be repeated by any junior on one’s own — with a counselor or favorite teacher then enlisted as a sounding board. Mr. A Silent Essays. Hemmelgarn said he divides the essay questions into several categories, including “Why you?” and homework grids, “Why us?” As an example of “Why you?” — or why might a particular college want you — he referred to killer an actual prompt on the Common Application that directs an applicant to “evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on homework grids you.”

Part of the advice he gives his students, he said, is that they not write a hackneyed paragraph about a family trip “that changed my life.” Unless, of course, it did. One counselor in the audience immediately raised her hand to say that one of her high school students was in the process of writing just such an essay — about learning Flamenco in Spain — that promised to be unique and memorable. The boy’s theme (and yes, it was a boy)? “When am I ever going to do that again?” Mr. Hemmelgarn said he approved — because the essay sounded like it would meet another of his criteria: “What can you write that’s going to set you apart from cancer a silent killer essays everyone else?” As an example of the question of write reflection, “Why us?” Mr. Hemmelgarn pointed to the following question from an actual application: “Why are you considering The Ohio State University?” In counseling his students on how to a silent essays approach their answer, Mr. Hemmelgarn said he tells them that colleges “want to hear a little about themselves.” And that, he said, usually requires some research. One other tip from db2 resume Mr. Hemmelgarn: When an applicant is asked a question like, “Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you,” as appears on the Common Application, what the college is really seeking is something about you (as in how you are similar to the person, or different.)

“The college is cancer a silent not accepting grandpa,” Mr. Hemmelgarn said. “They want to db2 resume know what qualities of grandpa do you have.” Do readers of The Choice have similar advice to pass along? Please use the comment box below to let us know. Comments are no longer being accepted. My advice to cancer a silent killer all is to be yourself. Andreas Thesis. Let your writing reflect who you are and how you approach problems in your life.

Write that, and the college that recognizes individuality (something I highly prize) will come calling with financial aid. I don’t care what the colleges are looking for, YOU know what YOU are looking for, and cancer a silent, you know what type of person you are. If the college wants you for you, they’ll admit you. My younger brother is a high school junior, and db2 resume, he has Asperger’s. A Silent. While my parents are focusing on helping him find schools that will accommodate his condition, I want to sample interview for research encourage him to essays make his applications to those schools as good as they can be.

I anticipate that he will find the college essay especially difficult, since he’s never been good at “selling himself” in werr thesis, the way that colleges ask you to. Does anyone know of cancer a silent, resources to help students on the autistic spectrum navigate the college admissions process? 25 admissions essays over the course of a personal, 25 weeks is ridiculous overkill. As those of you who read my recent article ( know, I’m not a big fan of the College Board. However, this is some really good information about how to make the most of cancer killer essays, your college admissions essay. By the time you write your essay, there are only 3 parts of thesis course, your college application that you have control over: your senior mid term exams, your last chance at the SAT, and cancer killer essays, your college essay. Everything else is already in the books. I’ve been working with kid applying to college for a long time, and andreas werr thesis, I strongly recommend taking this advice to a silent essays heart and really putting your mind to answering the questions, “Why you?” and “Why us?”. It can really make a difference.

Yeah, I agree. That is completely ridiculous. Statement. Nice idea–but if your kid was like my kid, he was already doing homework on most Saturday nights. So were the other highly competitive kids in a silent, his class. Werr. (Believe me, this was not my idea–he was just incredibly driven. And he did get into the top college he wanted, so I guess it was worthwhile–at least he thinks so!). Yes, it’s good to write a good college essay, but not if it comes at killer essays, the expense of the grades that are going to get you into that great college you want to go to! My daughter has written eight different essays so far for scholarships and applications, and she is only half-way through the process. I wish she had generated more ideas when she was a junior. A possible resource is Realizing the College Dream with Asperger Syndrome by Anne Palmer and/or Succeeding in Colleg with Asperger Syndrome by John Harpur, Maria Lawlor and thesis course, Michael Fitzgerald.

My wife and I had suggested a topic to our daughter but her essay came out forced. A few days later, she surprised us us with an essay on another topic that was literate and flowed naturally. This took place over the summer when the pressure was much less. She is seeking admission to schools where she has a good chance of being accepted, anyway, based on her high school record and interests. The world does not start with Yale and a silent killer, end with Harvard.

Her essay is clearly in db2 resume, the ballpark and cancer a silent essays, it is done. Let’s not hype these kids into more stress than they already have. Thesis Course. Aim for appropriate and well-written and avoid the hackneyed. (Bravo to cancer killer essays Nicola for thesis course Comment No. 1.) As aparent who just completed the a silent college application with my daughter, I have two peices of advice. One, have students start drafting their essays during the summer before senior year. It is a time where they have little pressure. Second and most important, have someone other than a parent review the essay. Homework Grids. No matter how hard we try, parents are jaded when it comes to killer their kids. Have someone who does not know your child review the essays.

The feedback can be valuable. I agree with Sam (#3). And I’m also a writer and writing teacher (as well as a college counselor). Sure, students should be honing their essay writing (and reading) skills, but it seems myopic to repeat this exercise that many times, especially since students would also be well served by thesis course, working on critical writing and reading, as well as the personal essay. For those applying to a silent killer Harvard or Yale: the essay is the first date, the interview is the db2 resume second date and the third date is when your parents make a huge donation to cancer essays the school. I’m so glad I went to college 40 years ago. I’m also glad I went to college a while ago (only 10 years ago), but I never felt the pressure these kids feel. I love your tips here. Such good advice. Thesis Course. One of our student bloggers over at myUsearch wrote a great article about the college essay she wrote to get into a silent killer, Yale. Hope this helps:

Also, beware the over-edited-overworked-by-five-critics essay result where the fresh original voice of the db2 resume 17-18 year old applicant has been lost. As a parent, I make it a point to go back to the very first draft quite often, and ask (out loud) “what was catchy about this essay idea to being with?” and “is it still there in killer, this current draft?”. This also means that one should not actually write anything for the applicant (you know who you are, parents!) — not only is it unethical, it also puts the idea in questions, your voice, not theirs. Discussing ideas around the dining table (on cell phone, more realistically?), is fair and good I think, much as they would do with a teacher in school. I remember writing my college essays. My high school class started with 269 members. We graduated 180. Only about cancer killer half went to college. I remember seeking advice from a guidance counselor about liberal arts colleges, and he told me not to get my hopes up because I likely wouldn’t get a good enough scholarship to attend.

I ended up getting nearly full rides to everywhere I applied, and statement, a full ride to school that I did attend. I never showed my guidance counselor my essays, because if he was so stupid as to suggest that I would not get scholarships as an Appalachian student from a poor school district with an ACT composite of cancer a silent killer, 32 who had qualified for one of the homework grids national forensic competitions 3 out of a silent killer, 4 years, then he was probably too stupid to offer valid critique. I suppose that what I’m saying is that I’m jealous of high school students who come from a world where their parents and andreas thesis, teachers are supportive of cancer killer essays, their college application efforts. Instead, coming from a poor rural school district, I got teachers who accused me of plagiarism when I showed them my writing and thesis course, guidance counselors who told me I’d never get into Bryn Mawr. I’m wondering which is cancer more common for thesis course American high school students. Sam, 25 admissions essays over the course of 25 weeks is so not ridiculous overkill. It’s a lot like a real job, innit?

An intro to the world of work, you might say. My daughter began her college essay, “All my life there have been bugs.” She had fun with it. She is now a junior at Swarthmore College. Wow – my essay was nothing like that. I think it was about a favorite book I read, and cancer a silent killer essays, why I liked it. Geez, like a first date? I’m not marrying my college. And really, I can write an essay (or a cover letter) gushing about U of homework grids, Fill-in-the-blank, or XYZ, Inc. but I’m just gonna copy and killer essays, paste five other names into that space, and everyone knows it. This whole process is becoming too overwhelming and too emotionally charged. I took the SAT once, sent my scores and transcript, got two teachers to write recommendations, wrote my essay (ONE essay was written ONCE), and werr, sent my app in. End of story.

The best advice my daughter received was to have confidence in her essay and not worry about WHAT SHE SHOULD do! A first date?? Are you kidding? Robert Frost once said that people who don’t understand comparisons aren’t safe to cross the essays street. I’d say that people who pick up a silly comparison and thesis, consider it seriously are in even more danger. How absolutely ridiculous to cancer a silent essays have junior write that many college essays. When it’s time for kids to write the college essay, it’s time for kids to consider the topics. The summer before senior year is the time to start thinking–at the thesis course very earliest. On another note, you might want to investigate the killer essays merit of this practice at Bexley by asking the students who were subjected to that regimen of college essay writing. You might be surprised at their answers. 25 essays over 25 weeks is “like a real job”?

Try a second job. If you’re talking about a job, how about the questions paper job of being a high school student? — that’s what I wish students were focused on, instead of the fetishized industry of college admissions. In a way, I like that idea, but I’m not convinced that 5 essays over 5 weeks won’t accomplish a good chunk of the cancer killer same idea. Thesis Course. 25 over 25 weeks extends from the spring of a silent killer, junior year, when kids should really be focused on their schoolwork, into the beginning of db2 resume, senior year, when kids should be focused on the most college-like tasks they’ll have to take on during high school (assuming, that is, that their school is giving them enough of a challenge). I’m also a teacher of writing, but mainly I’m a teacher of teenagers. I’m sickened when I hear such overwhelming tasks and a silent, pressures put on students who are busy with being students and kids. Werr. As suggested by #1, 5, 17, 18, and 19, you will end up in a college that is suitable for you, and you will be fine. As a high school drop-out, I had no school counselors advising me about killer my college essays; I was oblivious re: need to tell a story that set me apart from for research my peers. Cancer A Silent. etc. etc. etc.I applied to only one university, a US News #038; World Report top 20. I got in, and graduated in May ’09. My first semester, I audaciously asked an admissions officer, why me, and not someone more worthy, she stated that my essays were forthright and werr, free of the usual highly edited and coached quote unquote drivel.

My advice re: writing good admissions essays: do not under any circumstances show your parents, or any present or former teachers your essays until after you get accepted, be humble, don’t show off. (Sorry: didn’t make my disagreement clear enough [#21]. The teacher who did 25 in 25 weeks did it during the school year, for killer his English course. My concern was with people trying to replicate that without it being a teacher assignment — in thesis, other words, on a silent top of the existing schoolwork. I quibble with the effort required even within a class, and wonder what else those students were working on during those 25 weeks, but I respect the teacher’s inclination to have his class write extensively and reflectively.)

dungeon craft essays Confessions of a Dungeons Dragons™ Addict. Your contribution via Patreon or PayPal Me keeps this site and cancer a silent essays, its author alive. It is homework grids important that you accept the fact that I am a Christian. To this end, and cancer, recognizing that I am saved by grace, not by works I have done, I would recount just a part of my Christian experience so that you may know me by my works. I was as a youth raised in thesis statement Baptist Sunday Schools until the age of twelve, when a business relocation landed me in cancer killer essays a Presbyterian congregation. By then I had learned the scriptures well enough that the Presbyterians chose me as one of two youths to represent them on WNBC (New York) radio's Bible quiz. My partner and I advanced to the finals. More importantly, in 1968, when I was thirteen, my cousin (now a Presbyterian minister) showed me that the truth I knew could become a personal truth. Using a Campus Crusade Four Spiritual Laws leaflet, he led me into a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. To trace in detail the fellowships and ministries through which I grew would take too much space.

They include independent fellowships, Full Gospel Businessmen, Scott Ross, Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Assembly of God churches, and many others. Thesis Course? Before I finished high school I took the essays, opportunity to carry Bibles into Romania with a high school choral group, and started an evangelistic music ministry in New Jersey. Over the next decade, my music, evangelism, and teaching were heard from how to write reflection, Maine to cancer a silent killer essays, Maryland. Seeking to better serve God with my music, I went to db2 resume, college to killer essays, study the thesis course, Bible. In five years of study I earned an Associate of cancer Arts from Luther College of the Bible and Liberal Arts in Teaneck, New Jersey, and thesis course, a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Biblical Studies from Gordon College. I took all this accrued study, and cancer a silent essays, wound up on a small Christian radio station where for five years I struggled to thesis course, fight management pressures to convert to a silent killer, a more financially profitable format while preaching and teaching the gospel on homework grids the air and in local churches. I also continued with my music; some of my songs are still sung as choruses in fellowships in the area.

During this time I taught New Testament at a small Bible College which unfortunately did not prosper; sometime after part-time faculty (including me) were released, the school closed. It was also during this time that my wife and I began to play Dungeons Dragons(tm). I should also make it clear that we are not idiots. Cancer Killer? On the contrary, my wife is a registered nurse who graduated from her program with a perfect 4.0 average. I eventually went on to complete my Juris Doctore, receiving an American Jurisprudence Award in Jurisprudence, and being listed in Who's Who Among American Law Students 8th and 9th editions. I also became a member of homework grids American Mensa.

We were not fools. But we were game players. A Silent Killer? We played many kinds of games with many kinds of people. Andreas Werr? Apart from the fact that it was a relaxing and stimulating recreational activity, it enabled us to maintain relationships with people who were not Christians and, by sharing our lives with them, to cancer a silent killer essays, move them slowly toward the gospel and into growth. How To A Personal Essay? We constantly kept our eyes open for new games, even subscribing to cancer killer, magazines which provided information about them. Thesis Course? Then one day in about 1980, my wife brought home an article in Psychology Today(tm) praising the cancer, new game Dungeons Dragons(tm), which the andreas werr, author had used as a group therapy technique for teenagers. We were intrigued. From the sound of it, this was a game that would enable us to create adventures like those in some of our favorite Christian fiction--C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkein, George MacDonald. We immediately sought it out, and purchased a basic set.

We were not disappointed. A Silent? The game lends itself extremely well to creating mortal battles with spiritual ramifications. We quickly expanded into the advanced rules. I became the referee--the dungeon master--and created worlds for sample for research, my friends to explore. After a time, I mentioned the game on the air as part of an illustration in a teaching.

I was abruptly made aware of something I could not then understand: that there were Christians who believed the game was itself evil, demonic, and dangerous. They showed their concern for me (I was, fortunately, established and well loved by the Christians in the audience) by showering me with tracts by various and sometimes highly respected writers explaining why this game was so horrible. Perhaps the volume of a silent essays material and the respectability of the authors should have caused me to abandon the db2 resume, game. The problem was, everything that was said about the game in these tracts was either completely wrong or completely meaningless. For example, it was pointed out cancer a silent essays, that the Monster Manual--one of the rulebooks for thesis course, the game--contained the cancer, words devil and demon many times--the authors had counted how many--between certain page numbers. However, the book in question is a sourcebook, essentially an encyclopedia of good and evil creatures, some very weak, others very powerful, which may be used at the referee's discretion to create encounters in his campaign. The words appear far more frequently in andreas werr thesis similar sections of the Encyclopedia Brittanica, which to my knowledge nobody advocates burning. Furthermore, if these monsters were exactly the killer, same but for the names--if they were called orthnips and ognogs--no one would complain.

However, the db2 resume, swords and sorcery milieu (and the fictional and inspirational writings of many Christian authors) include many encounters with such creatures. They are recognized by those names, and any brave Christian knight who faces such a being knows what he faces. Killer? The game would be stripped of much of homework grids its Christian potential without them. It should also be noted that on killer essays the grand scale good is greater than evil. Solars, planetars, and devas--the ranks of angels--are greater in power than the demons, daemons, and devils who might be arrayed against a personal reflection them, even without recognizing (as the game does) that the cancer a silent, evil creatures cannot cooperate in mutual trust. Furthermore, many of the character types (called classes) which are the most powerful--paladin, ranger, cavalier--must be good without blemish or face severe consequences including the homework grids, loss of all their spiritually-derived powers.

And a high-level paladin--a knight of holy orders trained for many years in defending his lawful good faith--although a mere mortal is more than the equal of a devil, as he can bring to bear not merely his physical prowess but also the powers of cancer killer good. Another attack is made upon the book Deities Demigods(tm), replaced eventually by Legends Lore(tm). These books contain a great deal of information about false gods from many lands. However, this again is a sourcebook, permitting a referee a great deal of choice as to db2 resume, what kind of essays world he will create. The question of the religious background of the campaign is andreas werr specifically left in the hands of the referee who creates the world. I--and most of the referees I have met--always maintained that there was one God of gods, but that there were many so-called gods vying for cancer a silent killer, worship who were some more and some less aligned with the truth, all of whom would eventually kneel to the God of gods.

Following C.S. Lewis, I accepted the possibility that many of the pagan gods may have been spiritual beings, and some in ancient times may actually have not yet been forced to chose between God and Lucifer. In fact, the game gave us the opportunity to talk about moral, ethical, and spiritual questions with nonbelievers in sample interview a way we had never done before. It is a strong point of Dungeons Dragons(tm) that it contains alignment: every player must decide whether his character is good or evil, lawful or chaotic. Cancer Killer Essays? The character must then abide by that decision, and face the consequences of his actions whether he chooses something required by his beliefs, or turns against those beliefs to act otherwise. The player is homework grids also bound by that decision, but in a different way. The player controls his character in exactly the same way as the author of a book.

Alignment is a major decision about cancer essays a character, and the player must follow the alignment decision in other decisions he makes for the character in order to remain in character. However, it is unfair to suggest that the player who runs an evil character is himself doing evil in the same way that it is unfair to suggest that an author who creates well-developed evil characters in homework grids his stories must himself be evil. C.S. Lewis has given us many fictional examples of good characters--King Peter, Queen Lucy, Ransom, and Aslan himself--and also many powerful evil characters--the white queen, the green serpent, Weston, and Screwtape. The ability to understand evil does not make the killer, author or the player--or the game--evil. This aspect of the game creates the opportunity to discuss the nature of thesis statement good and cancer a silent, evil in db2 resume a way that chess never did. In this regard, someone somewhere quoted a game player who alledgedly said that it was easier to play an evil character than a good one. I do not know who said it--and any game is only as good as the referee and the players--but it was not so at my table nor at the table of killer essays any referee I ever met. Evil characters rapidly face obvious consequences: they become distrusted, have no allies, and are soon eliminated either by those they trust or by those they misuse. Andreas Thesis? It is as in real life: evil has consequences. Even more so, it is a silent killer as we Christians perceive it: evil has eternal consequences.

There are many circumstances in which it is clear that the evil character who makes a fatal mistake is carried away by homework grids, his own gods to eternal punishment. So many of these arguments proved to be without merit. Others merely misunderstood the cancer a silent essays, game. It is pointed out werr thesis, that there are a large number of magic spells and magical devices described in the various rule books. Critics claimed that players pretended to cast these spells by saying spell words and making motions. These critics do not understand that the a silent, player is not the character. As it is, the books contain descriptions of what a spell or device does, and indeed says whether the character must speak, move his hands, and/or have materials available, but no words are given and rarely are motions described (and then only as a joke). While the character is perceived as doing these things, the player merely says that his character will cast the spell. He does not himself act out db2 resume, spell casting. The objection is a silent killer essays still raised that the game suggests the involvement of magic.

Those of us who are fond of those Christian authors who write so much fantasy (and I would add Charles Williams and John Milton to those already mentioned) do not have a problem with the andreas thesis, fictitious use of magic. Swords and sorcery books and movies are not a problem per se, and the idea of killer incorporating these into a game is not significantly different. But some still feel uncomfortable about the sample interview questions for research, idea of magic. Magic is merely a device of the story. Cancer A Silent Killer Essays? For example, a character in a good thesis statement a game picks up a device and fires it. It sends out a blast of heat. If you are playing Gamma World(tm), it is a flame thrower; if you are playing Dungeons Dragons(tm), it is a wand of fireballs. A character is killer essays injured, and another character comes to thesis course, his aid, attempting to heal his injuries. In Star Frontiers(tm), it is a medic administering biocort; in Dungeons Dragons(tm), it is a cleric prayerfully ministering with a cure light wounds spell.

A character assaulted by missile fire creates an invisible barrier which blocks many of the attacks. A Silent Essays? If it is Metamorphosis Alpha(tm), the character is a mutant using mental force field generation; if it is Dungeons Dragons(tm), then the character is questions for research paper a magic user casting a shield spell. Magic is used because we are attempting to cancer killer, create the worlds of medieval fantasy. It is not different in play from a world which uses advanced technology or presumed mental and a good statement, physical mutations or for that matter from those games which recreate the wild west (Boot Hill(tm)), counter-espionage (Top Secret(tm)), or cops and robbers (Gangbusters(tm)): characters are assumed to perform the a silent essays, actions the player specifies; players no more cast spells in Dungeons Dragons(tm) than shoot each other with revolvers in Boot Hill(tm). But it was still argued by some that the background of magic was inherently dangerous in db2 resume that it might spark interest in the supernatural, through such outlets as witchcraft. There are at least four answers to this suggestion. First, Christian writers during the cancer a silent, first half of this century (again Lewis, Tolkein, Williams) used magic, mysticism, and paganism in their own stories specifically because they wanted modern materialists to begin to consider whether the reflection, supernatural might exist. Here we have a game with enormous popular potential which might well get that idea to many more people, and we condemn it. Is it merely because it was not our idea? Second, even if we assume that those authors were wrong, that it is dangerous to attack materialism with generalized spiritualism, does it not make sense that we should put ourselves in a position which makes us available to cancer, answer the questions of write reflection those who do become so involved, rather than signaling them that we despise them and condemn them for such curiosity? Third, it is not the cancer a silent, mission of the church to create respectable sinners; it is the mission of the church to thesis course, hold out the hope of redemption.

Rebuking and condemning Dungeons Dragons(tm) players merely drives them away from that hope. If Dungeons Dragons(tm) is wrong, if it leads to a downward path (there is no evidence to essays, support such a contention), then the task of Christians is to love the players regardless of questions where their lives lead. It is killer said that for some alcoholics and drug addicts there is db2 resume no hope for them until they finally reach what for them is the bottom. Some people may need to see the full face of cancer killer evil before fleeing in terror to the only hope of safety--and, as Lewis often said, the devil's best defense in this age is convincing people that he does not exist. Fourth, this feared spiritism is not the most horrible thing which can affect a person. There are far more insidious evils which creep into our beliefs: even as Christians, we accept lies without realizing what we have done. The inherent greed of our society, the belief that success is measured by having the most toys, may be the most insidious lie in thesis course this century. A Silent Killer? This lie is promoted by many games, including Monopoly(tm) and Life(tm). No one recognizes how dangerous these games might be in the lessons they teach. Meanwhile, although Dungeons Dragons(tm) includes the pursuit of sample for research paper wealth, it is not the measure of success in the game, and many characters are expected to contribute large portions of their wealth to essays, churches and charitable organizations. Interview Questions? Also, most games incorporate the competitive notion that only one player or team can win, encouraging the belief that winning requires defeating everyone else.

Some games, notably Risk(tm), Stragego(tm), and chess, have elevated this to the status of a silent essays war. While conflict, even war, is integral to the Dungeons Dragons(tm) world, it is generally the case that players quickly learn to join forces, cooperating against a common non-player enemy, overcoming problems as a team. In a good campaign, all the players come away as winners. No, the real dangers of Dungeons Dragons(tm) lay elsewhere. The spiritism it alledgedly fosters is neither so strong nor so dangerous an idea as those insidious philosophies permeating other games which can so undermine our lives. Then there is the argument that Dungeons Dragons(tm) players commit suicide. Those authors who have said so should be embarrassed. The original case of this appears in sample interview for research paper the book Mazes and Monsters by Rona Jaffee, a work of cancer killer fiction written in the early 1980's when Dungeons Dragons(tm) was still a new game.

I know of no real case of thesis a Dungeons Dragons(tm) related suicide or killing. It seems unlikely: the game teaches hope and resourcefulness. It encourages people to believe they can defeat the obstacles they face. Even so, with the vast number of teenage suicides, it is likely that some were Dungeons Dragons(tm) players. Cancer A Silent Essays? Some were honor students, some sports heroes, some scouts and choir members and Sunday School members and leaders in their communities. Db2 Resume? I am certain that far more suicides can be clearly shown to cancer killer essays, be directly caused by sample questions, the stock market than can be even remotely connected to Dungeons Dragons(tm). That does not make the stock market the tool of Satan. These arguments were all clearly invalid; they did not touch the true dangers of Dungeons Dragons(tm). Thus, we continued to play. We found that we had large numbers of Christians and cancer, non-Christians playing together, and sometimes discussing the morality and spiritual realities behind the game. Through the relationships we built, we saw a number of them become Christians and grow in grace and understanding.

In fact, there is one story I must tell. It is the story of a friend who, long before I met him, had heard the gospel on television and andreas, given his life to Jesus. But before he had had the opportunity to learn and grow in this new life, some well-meaning misguided local minister singled him out as an example of someone who, because he played Dungeons Dragons(tm), was clearly of the devil. This condemnation rattled my friend, who decided that if that was what God thought of him, he would pursue evil. This he did with a vengeance for many years. He was introduced to me because we were both Dungeons Dragons(tm) players, and for that reason he did not immediately dismiss me as a Christian fool; because I did not condemn him for this (indeed, I was not interested in condemning but in cancer a silent killer essays reaching him), he was willing to discuss the spiritual and moral ramifications of the game and thesis course, the spiritual realities of his own life. Ultimately--after years wasted--he returned to the truth he had abandoned, and began to grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ Jesus. So what are the cancer a silent essays, problems of Dungeons Dragons(tm) and other role playing games? There are several, and Christians should be aware of them and guard against db2 resume them.

First, like most games--all those which use dice or cards--Dungeons Dragons(tm) assumes that dice and cards fall in a random pattern along statistically predictable probabilities. It is cancer killer essays extremely difficult for us to deal with this assumption. The question of whether dice and cards fall at random or are divinely controlled is db2 resume far beyond the scope of this article, but the answer goes directly to essays, the nature of the db2 resume, sovereignty of God. Christians who play such games should grapple with the issue and form an opinion about it. Note that it is possible to essays, avoid all such games by only playing those games which pit skill against skill--athletic competition, chess, checkers, reversi, competitive puzzles such as tic-tac-toe and thesis course, dots--but these are the games most susceptible to the problems of the competitive spirit, the idea that one wins and killer essays, therefore all others lose. That may be a far more dangerous challenge to reflection, the principles of the gospel than the more intellectual question of whether the cancer a silent killer essays, assumption of sample questions for research paper statistical randomness is an affront to cancer, the sovereignty of God. The second problem with Dungeons Dragons(tm) is that it, like nearly any hobby or recreational activity, takes time and money. The stewardship of our time and andreas werr thesis, our money is killer essays a difficult personal issue, and each of us must determine the costs of our choices. The time and money I spent learning Dungeons Dragons(tm) and developing my game world and playing it (as well as additional time spent playing in other less controversial game worlds such as Star Frontiers(tm) and interview paper, Gamma World(tm)) might have been spent in other pursuits. I might have memorized several more books of the Bible, or spent time and money passing out killer essays, literature on street corners. I might have written more music and devoted time to the business problems of expanding a concert ministry.

I might have volunteered at any of several missions to help reach and teach people who had hit bottom. Thesis Course? I cannot say what impact I would have had. But today I have about twenty young men from twelve to thirty years old who come to my house regularly to play a game which I referee, most of whom are either not Christian at all or very much unaware what their commitment to a silent essays, Christ means. As part of a good thesis statement that game, they must each come to grips with how I understand good and evil, what moral standards I think are appropriate to cancer a silent killer essays, characters professing faith in sample interview for research a good god, and what consequences will fall upon those who do right and those who do wrong. I have had the opportunity to cancer, give Bibles and instruction to thesis, teenagers whom I would not have met were it not for the game, and to sing songs of faith to some who would never have darkened the door of a Christian concert let alone an cancer killer essays, evangelical church. I have been able to andreas thesis, demonstrate that Christians are permitted--no, required--to think, to understand life from the perspective of the truth revealed. I have changed lives which might not otherwise have changed. In assessing how well my time and money are spent--and I confess to a tendency at times to overspend even on unquestionably worthwhile pursuits--I must take into account what has happened in these lives. The third problem about a silent killer essays Dungeons Dragons(tm) is that Christians have by and large abandoned it to the enemy. Those who complain and condemn a game which they have never even watched let alone played have in attempting to revile the game merely blackened the eye of the church.

The game is thesis course replete with players who believe that all Christians are idiots because of what some Christians have said. The game itself is not a stumbling block to faith, but the attitudes of those who would rebuke a Dungeons Dragons(tm) player in the name of Jesus and walk away rather than use the valuable lessons of the game as a building block for a true faith are. A Silent Killer Essays? What the game needs is great players and intelligent referees who can incorporate their Christian faith into the game, debate the issues it raises on its own terms, and in so doing can say to thesis course, the other players, I am a Christian, and as a Christian I believe. . . . Most people are reached by someone they know. Killer Essays? Most Dungeons Dragons(tm) players do not know any Christians who have not called them satanists. Most ongoing Dungeons Dragons(tm) games do not have the insights to be gained from people of the sample questions paper, Book sitting at the table bringing faith to bear on the worlds of human fantasy.

I still play Dungeons Dragons(tm), Star Frontiers(tm), and Gamma World(tm), and see no reason to stop. I referee two games, and have characters in seven others. I think C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkein, and Charles Williams would approve--I know that many Dungeons Dragons(tm) players have the opportunity to read their books because of exposure through other players. I said at the beginning that I wanted you to understand how a Christian could become a Dungeons Dragons(tm) player. By now I hope I have made it clear why many more should.

The fears and misgivings of many concerning the game are misguided and cancer a silent, unfounded. It is a fabulous opportunity to explore and understand our own faith, and to share that faith with others. For more on Faith and Gaming, visit the Christian Gamers Guild, and read more articles about faith and gaming in the Chaplain's Corner. I've expressed a few thoughts on the integration of faith and gaming in thesis response to a letter I received.

Essay On Man - Poem by Alexander Pope. The First Epistle. To low ambition, and the pride of Kings. Let us (since Life can little more supply. Than just to killer look about a personal essay, us and to a silent essays die) Expatiate(2) free o'er all this scene of Man; A mighty maze! but not without a plan; A Wild, where weeds and flow'rs promiscuous shoot, Or Garden, tempting with forbidden fruit.

Together let us beat this ample field, Try what the open, what the thesis course covert yield; The latent tracts(3), the giddy heights explore. Of all who blindly creep, or sightless soar; Eye Nature's walks, shoot Folly as it flies, And catch the cancer essays Manners living as they rise;

Laugh where we must, be candid where we can; But vindicate(4) the ways of God to Man. 1. Homework Grids? Say first, of God above, or Man below, What can we reason, but from what we know? Of Man what see we, but his station here, From which to reason, or to which refer? Thro' worlds unnumber'd tho' the cancer essays God be known, 'Tis ours to trace him only in our own. He, who thro' vast immensity can pierce, See worlds on thesis course, worlds compose one universe,

Observe how system into system runs, What other planets circle other suns, What vary'd being peoples ev'ry star, May tell why Heav'n has made us as we are. But of this frame the cancer a silent killer essays bearings, and the ties, The strong connections, nice dependencies,

Gradations just, has thy pervading soul. Look'd thro'? or can a part contain the whole? Is the great chain, that draws all to agree, And drawn supports, upheld by God, or thee? Why form'd so weak, so little, and so blind! First, if thou canst, the db2 resume harder reason guess,

Why form'd no weaker, blinder, and no less! Ask of thy mother earth, why oaks are made. Taller or stronger than the cancer essays weeds they shade? Or ask of thesis course, yonder argent fields(5) above, Why JOVE'S Satellites are less than JOVE?(6) Of Systems possible, if 'tis confest. That Wisdom infinite must form the best, Where all must full or not coherent be,

And all that rises, rise in cancer killer essays, due degree; Then, in the scale of reas'ning life, 'tis plain. There must be, somewhere, such rank as Man; And all the db2 resume question (wrangle e'er so long) Is only this, if God has plac'd him wrong? Respecting Man, whatever wrong we call, Nay, must be right, as relative to all. In human works, tho' labour'd on with pain, A thousand movements scarce one purpose gain; In God's, one single can its end produce; Yet serves to a silent killer essays second too some other use.

So Man, who here seems principal alone, Perhaps acts second to some sphere unknown, Touches some wheel, or verges to thesis some goal; 'Tis but a part we see, and a silent killer essays, not a whole. When the proud steed shall know why Man restrains. His fiery course, or drives him o'er the plains; When the dull Ox, why now he breaks the clod,

Is now a victim, and now Egypt's God:(7) Then shall Man's pride and dullness comprehend. His actions', passions', being's, use and end; Why doing, suff'ring, check'd, impell'd; and db2 resume, why. This hour a slave, the next a deity. Then say not Man's imperfect, Heav'n in fault; Say rather, Man's as perfect as he ought; His knowledge measur'd to cancer a silent killer his state and thesis course, place,

His time a moment, and killer essays, a point his space. If to be perfect in andreas werr thesis, a certain sphere, What matter, soon or late, or here or there? The blest today is as completely so, As who began a thousand years ago. All but the cancer a silent killer page prescrib'd, their present state; From brutes what men, from men what spirits know: Or who could suffer Being here below? The lamb thy riot dooms to bleed to-day, Had he thy Reason, would he skip and play? Pleas'd to the last, he crops the a good statement flow'ry food,

And licks the a silent essays hand just rais'd to write a personal reflection shed his blood. Oh blindness to the future! kindly giv'n, That each may fill the circle mark'd by Heav'n; Who sees with equal eye, as God of all, A hero perish, or a sparrow fall, Atoms or systems into ruin hurl'd, And now a bubble burst, and now a world. Hope humbly then; with trembling pinions soar;

Wait the great teacher Death, and God adore! What future bliss, he gives not thee to know, But gives that Hope to be thy blessing now. Hope springs eternal in the human breast: Man never Is, but always To be blest: The soul, uneasy and confin'd from home,

Rests and expatiates in a life to cancer killer essays come. Lo! the poor Indian, whose untutor'd mind. Sees God in clouds, or hears him in the wind; His soul proud Science never taught to stray. Far as the solar walk, or milky way; Yet simple Nature to andreas his hope has giv'n, Behind the a silent killer cloud-topt hill, an humbler heav'n; Some safer world in depth of woods embrac'd, Some happier island in the watry waste,

Where slaves once more their native land behold, No fiends torment, no Christians thirst for gold! To Be, contents his natural desire, He asks no Angel's wing, no Seraph's(8) fire; But thinks, admitted to that equal sky, His faithful dog shall bear him company.

Weigh thy Opinion against Providence; Call Imperfection what thou fancy'st such, Say, here he gives too little, there too much; Destroy all creatures for thy sport or gust,(9) Yet cry, If Man's unhappy, God's unjust; If Man alone ingross not Heav'n's high care, Alone made perfect here, immortal there: Snatch from homework grids his hand the balance(10) and cancer a silent killer, the rod, Re-judge his justice, be the GOD of GOD!

In Pride, in thesis, reas'ning Pride, our error lies; All quit their sphere, and rush into a silent the skies. Pride still is aiming at the blest abodes, Men would be Angels, Angels would be Gods. Aspiring to be Gods, if Angels fell, Aspiring to be Angels, Men rebel; And who but wishes to homework grids invert the laws. Of ORDER, sins against th' Eternal Cause. Earth for whose use?

Pride answers, Tis for mine: For me kind Nature wakes her genial pow'r, Suckles each herb, and cancer killer, spreads out ev'ry flow'r; Annual for me, the grape, the rose renew. The juice nectareous, and the balmy dew; For me, the mine a thousand treasures brings; For me, health gushes from a thousand springs; Seas roll to waft me, suns to light me rise;

My foot-stool earth, my canopy the skies. But errs not Nature from this gracious end, From burning suns when livid deaths descend, When earthquakes swallow, or when tempests sweep. Towns to one grave, whole nations to the deep? No ('tis reply'd) the first Almighty Cause. Acts not by partial, but by gen'ral laws;

Th' exceptions few; some change since all began, And what created perfect? -- Why then Man? If the sample for research paper great end be human Happiness, Then Nature deviates; and can Man do less? As much that end a constant course requires. Of show'rs and sun-shine, as of Man's desires; As much eternal springs and cloudless skies,

As Men for cancer a silent, ever temp'rate, calm, and a personal reflection, wise. If plagues or earthquakes break not Heav'n's design, Why then a Borgia,(11) or a Catiline?(12) Who knows but he, whose hand the cancer a silent killer light'ning forms, Who heaves old Ocean, and who wings the werr storms, Pours fierce Ambition in essays, a Caesar's(13) mind, Or turns young Ammon(14) loose to scourge mankind? From pride, from pride, our very reas'ning springs; Account for interview questions paper, moral as for nat'ral things:

Why charge we Heav'n in those, in cancer killer essays, these acquit? In both, to reason right is to submit. Better for homework grids, Us, perhaps, it might appear, Were there all harmony, all virtue here; That never air or ocean felt the cancer a silent wind; That never passion discompos'd the mind: But ALL subsists by elemental strife;

and Passions are the elements of Life. The gen'ral ORDER, since the whole began, Is kept in Nature, and werr, is kept in killer, Man. And little less than Angel,(15) would be more; Now looking downwards, just as griev'd appears. To want the strength of db2 resume, bulls, the cancer a silent fur of bears. Made for his use all creatures if he call, Say what their use, had he the pow'rs of all? Nature to these, without profusion kind,

The proper organs, proper pow'rs assign'd; Each seeming want compensated of course, Here with degrees of swiftness, there of how to reflection, force; All in exact proportion to the state; Nothing to add, and nothing to abate. Each beast, each insect, happy in its own; Is Heav'n unkind to Man, and Man alone?

Shall he alone, whom rational we call, Be pleas'd with nothing, if not bless'd with all? The bliss of Man (could Pride that blessing find) Is not to a silent act or think beyond mankind; No pow'rs of body or of andreas werr thesis, soul to share, But what his nature and his state can bear. Why has not Man a microscopic eye? For this plain reason, Man is not a Fly.

Say what the cancer use, were finer optics giv'n, T' inspect a mite,(16) not comprehend the heav'n? Or touch, if tremblingly alive all o'er, To smart and agonize at homework grids ev'ry pore? Or quick effluvia(17) darting thro' the brain, Die of a rose in aromatic pain? If nature thunder'd in his op'ning ears, And stunn'd him with the music of the spheres, How would he wish that Heav'n had left him still. The whisp'ring Zephyr,(18) and the purling rill?(19) Who finds not Providence all good and wise,

Alike in killer, what it gives, and what denies? The scale of sensual, mental pow'rs ascends: Mark how it mounts, to Man's imperial race, From the green myriads in the people grass: What modes of sight betwixt each wide extreme, The mole's dim curtain, and the lynx's beam: Of smell, the headlong lioness between, And hound sagacious(20) on the tainted(21) green: Of hearing, from the life that fills the flood,(22) To that which warbles thro' the interview questions for research paper vernal(23) wood: The spider's touch, how exquisitely fine!

Feels at each thread, and lives along the line: In the nice bee, what sense so subtly true. From pois'nous herbs extracts the healing dew:(24) How Instinct varies in the grov'ling swine, Compar'd, half-reas'ning elephant, with thine: 'Twixt that, and Reason, what a nice barrier; For ever sep'rate, yet for ever near! Remembrance and Reflection how ally'd; What thin partitions Sense from a silent Thought divide: And Middle natures,(25) how they long to join, Yet never pass th' insuperable line!

Without this just gradation, could they be. Subjected these to db2 resume those, or all to thee? The pow'rs of all subdu'd by thee alone, Is not thy Reason all these pow'rs in one? All matter quick, and bursting into birth. Above, how high progressive life may go! Around, how wide! how deep extend below! Vast chain of being, which from God began, Natures ethereal,(26) human, angel, man. Beast, bird, fish, insect! what no eye can see, No glass can reach! from Infinite to a silent thee,

From thee to Nothing! -- On superior pow'rs. Were we to press, inferior might on ours: Or in the full creation leave a void, Where, one step broken, the great scale's destoy'd: From Nature's chain whatever link you strike, Tenth or ten thousandth, breaks the thesis course chain alike. And if each system in cancer killer essays, gradation roll, Alike essential to th' amazing whole;

The least confusion but in one, not all. That system only, but the andreas whole must fall. Let Earth unbalanc'd from her orbit fly, Planets and Suns run lawless thro' the sky, Let ruling Angels from their spheres be hurl'd, Being on being wreck'd, and world on world, Heav'n's whole foundations to their centre nod, And Nature tremble to the throne of essays, God: All this dread ORDER break -- for whom? for thee? Vile worm! -- oh, Madness, Pride, Impiety! Or hand to toil, aspir'd to be the head?

What if the head, the eye, or ear repin'd(27) To serve mere engines to the ruling Mind? Just as absurd, to mourn the tasks or pains. The great directing MIND of statement, ALL ordains. All are but parts of one stupendous whole, Whose body, Nature is, and God the cancer a silent soul; That, chang'd thro' all, and db2 resume, yet in all the same, Great in the earth, as in th' ethereal frame,

Warms in the sun, refreshes in cancer a silent killer, the breeze, Glows in thesis statement, the stars, and blossoms in the trees, Lives thro' all life, extends thro' all extent, Spreads undivided, operates unspent, Breathes in our soul, informs our mortal parts, As full, as perfect, in a hair as heart; As full, as perfect, in vile Man that mourns, As the rapt Seraph that adores and burns; To him no high, no low, no great, no small; He fills, he bounds, connects, and equals all.

Our proper bliss depends on cancer essays, what we blame. Know thy own point: This kind, this due degree. Of blindness, weakness, Heav'n bestows on thee. Submit -- In this, or any other sphere, Secure to thesis course be as blest as thou canst bear: Safe in the hand of one disposing Pow'r,

Or in the natal, or the cancer a silent killer mortal hour. All Nature is but Art, unknown to thee; All Chance, Direction, which thou canst not see; All Discord, Harmony, not understood; All partial Evil, universal Good:

And, spite of Pride, in erring Reason's spite, One truth is clear, Whatever IS, is a good statement, RIGHT. to study himself. The proper study of Mankind is Man. Plac'd on a silent killer essays, this isthmus of a middle state,(28)

A being darkly wise, and a good thesis statement, rudely great: With too much knowledge for the Sceptic side, With too much weakness for essays, the Stoic's pride, He hangs between; in doubt to act, or rest, In doubt to deem himself a God, or Beast; In doubt his Mind or Body to prefer, Born but to die, and reas'ning but to questions err; Alike in a silent essays, ignorance, his reason such,

Whether he thinks too little, or too much: Chaos of Thought and Passion, all confus'd; Still by homework grids himself abus'd, or disabus'd; Created half to rise, and half to fall; Great lord of all things, yet a prey to all; Sole judge of Truth, in endless Error hurl'd: The glory, jest, and riddle of the world! 4[explain or defend] 5[silvery fields, i.e., the heavens] 6[the planet Jupiter]
