patent resume format This application claims priority of a provisional application, Ser. No. 60/008,700, filed Dec. 15, 1995.

The invention relates to electronic resume storage and 3 types of essays english exam, retrieval systems and methods. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION. Resumes are a primary communication medium between employers and job applicants (candidates). Employers annually spend billions of dollars to solicit resumes using newspaper advertisements, job fairs, college recruitment seminars, and other methods. In response, job applicants spend billions more to democracy america topics, compose, typeset, print, and ship those resumes. Unfortunately, present resume delivery practices are expensive and frustrating for of essays, job applicants. Identifying potential employers, obtaining addresses, producing resumes for each, and organic conclusion, finally delivering them is of essays on ap english burdensome and time-consuming. The success rate for such efforts is and point of english composition essays discouragingly low, and the associated expenses can be quite significant.

This makes the entire process quite inefficient from the applicant's point of view. Employers, too, suffer from the inefficiencies of resume collection and 3 types on ap exam, handling. The solicitation, receipt, storage, management, search, and retrieval of dozens, hundreds, and in some cases thousands of resumes can be a difficult, unwieldy, and psu dissertation, expensive burden on the employer. Physical, paper-based resumes are often stored in desk drawers and filing cabinets. The numerous limitations of 3 types of essays exam, present resume practices include consumption of food conclusion, substantial physical space; difficulty in searching through large quantities of paper documents; the near-impossibility of correlating applicants whose resumes may vary widely in organization, content, and of essays on ap english exam, clarity; and significance and point, the lack of uniformity in 3 types of essays on ap, the search process from one practitioner to another. From the annotated apa above discussion, it is clear that a very significant need exists for on ap exam, an improved method of resume solicitation, sorting, delivery, handling, and organic food conclusion, management. English. Yet prior attempts to resolve some of these problems have achieved only limited success. Document scanners have been used in some attempts to reduce the physical space consumed by physical resumes.

However, search methods do not work well on scanned images because scanned resumes are stored as pictures, not searchable words or text. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) has been used in some attempts to convert paper-based resumes to pure text. However, employers are typically unwilling to forgo the traditional resume because of the teaching skills to fourth grade students identified as gifted and talented widely held belief that the ability to review the format, style, and presentation of the resume itself is of value. Still other attempts have employed the aforementioned OCR conversion to allow the use of 3 types of essays english, keyword search methods on the resulting text of full resumes, in an attempt to democracy america essay, find those which contain key words or phrases. However, such methods have proven inefficient because of the nature of written language. As just one example, an employer seeking applicants residing in of essays on ap english, the state of Indiana will find numerous false matches when searching with the standard postal service abbreviation IN. The letter pair in appears frequently in the English language (many times in this sentence alone), yet most such matches in the full text of a resume would have little or nothing to do with the searcher's true intent. A further difficulty with keyword search methods is the requirement that the words or phrases in question must match with near-perfect accuracy. Essay. The diversity of job applicant writing skills and 3 types on ap english, vocabularies causes many resumes, which otherwise might describe applicants with similar attributes, to be written using very different terms and apa, phrases.

Such wide variation causes keyword search methods to often erroneously exclude qualified applicants--without notification to the searcher--while simultaneously including unqualified ones. Prior attempts at applying computer technology to resume management have been limited in scope, applicability, and 3 types exam, usefulness. For example, many have been intended for use only by employers, employment specialists, or headhunters. Job applicants themselves are completely excluded from accessing such systems. One prior attempt, described in binding, U.S. Pat. 3 Types On Ap. No. 5,164,897 to Clark et al. (incorporated by reference), is binding illustrative. 3 Types On Ap. The first sentence of the annotated bibliography prior art section of this patent describes the prior art as applying to employment agencies (sometimes called search firms).

The preferred embodiment section of the patent then describes a system designed for use by such agencies and firms--without direct applicant involvement of any kind. Other attempts have allowed applicants to initially enter some data, but make no explicit provision for ongoing involvement. Such approaches can result in outdated information and of essays english exam, questionable results. Other attempts have required the installation of food, specialized computer hardware and/or software, or personnel training at the employer's place of business. The difficulty in learning and using the system often effectively restricts access to just those who have been appropriately trained. Other attempts have incorporated rudimentary computer-based searching methods.

The most common method involves the aforementioned keyword searches on the contents of entire resumes, such as offered by Online Career Center, Indianapolis, Ind. and 3 types of essays exam, TMP Interactive, Framingham, Mass. The inherent limitations of such methods have already been discussed. Another attempt at incorporating computer-based searching methods is seen in food conclusion, the services available from Intellimatch, San Jose, Calif., (Internet address: http://www.intellimatch.com). This attempt accepts weighted ranking data provided by applicants and english, employers. There are several disadvantages of this type of and arms government essay, method: First, the user interface for interacting with such ranking systems can be complex, non-intuitive, unfamiliar, difficult to english, learn, and slow to operate. Significance Composition Essays. Second, there is no objective reference for of essays, ranking standards--individual applicants are asked to rank themselves, leading to an extremely subjective collection of personal opinions. Third, employers are asked to rank their requirements in a like fashion, again without reference to an objective standard. Fourth, these highly subjective data are then compared to each other, compounding assumptions upon assumptions and often yielding startlingly mismatched and valueless results.

Another attempt at providing resume services on the Internet is annotated bibliography rubric provided by Beverly Hills Software, 469 South Bedford Drive, Beverly Hills, Calif. 90212, (Internet address: http://www.Bhs.Com). This attempt prompts applicants to enter text-only information using a template. However, keyword searches still involve searching the entire contents of resume data; no searching by fields is available. A visual template is 3 types of essays english exam provided for applicant data, but the resulting pure text is sorted as one large text file, like other systems. There is also no provision for organic food conclusion, charging or collecting fees. Some of the aforementioned examples have attempted to of essays exam, incorporate various remote connection means. Such remote methods have traditionally been limited to text-only resume storage and keyword-based searches of the full resume text. None have succeeded in addressing all of the problems described above.

Mr. Kennerly’s post inspired one of the longest comment threads we’ve seen on Lens. He wrote to us on Monday to address both the criticism and the support that he received: I’d like to thank everyone who responded to my Sept. 17 article about 3 types of essays, Newsweek’s misuse of significance of english composition essays, one of my photos. The dialogue was robust and the volume of responses make it clear that the topic of fair and unbiased reporting is still one about which Americans have passionate feelings. The most telling statement came from Newsweek’s own spokesperson Frank De Maria, who said: ‘Did we use the image to make an editorial point-in this case, about the former vice president’s red-blooded, steak-eating, full-throated defense of his views and values? Yes, we did.’ I agree with Frank A. 3 Types Of Essays On Ap! Binder, who commented that Newsweek’s spokesman ‘confirms the photographer’s protest. Institutions Government Essay! A photo was cropped to 3 types of essays, support a bias in bibliography apa, reporting.’ The issue, of course, is not just about cropping. It is about the erosion of 3 types on ap english exam, credibility in the news business in general.

The great journalist Edward R. Murrow said, ‘In seeking the truth, you get both sides of the story.’ In this instance, and by its spokesman’s own admission, Newsweek never intended to seek the truth — but instead, and unapologetically, skewed imagery to advance its editorial agenda. I’m grateful to essay, my professional colleagues for their thoughtful responses, and their deep concern about the trend away from Murrow’s truth-seeking journalistic model. Original post | David Hume Kennerly is a former contributing editor of Newsweek. 3 Types Of Essays On Ap Exam! He won a Pulitzer Prize in 1972 for institutions and arms government essay his photographs of the of essays on ap english exam, Vietnam War. A response from Newsweek follows immediately below.

The Sept. 14th Newsweek cover line — “Is Your Baby Racist?” — should have included a sub-head, “Is Dick Cheney a Butcher?” Featured inside the magazine was a full-page, stand-alone picture of former Vice President Dick Cheney, knife in hand, leaning over a bloody carving board. America Essay! Newsweek used it to illustrate a quote that he made about C.I.A. interrogators. By linking that photo with Mr.

Cheney’s comment and giving it such prominence, they implied something sinister, macabre, or even evil was going on there. I took that photograph at his daughter Liz’s home during a two-day assignment, and was shocked by its usage. The meat on the cutting board wasn’t the only thing butchered. In fact, Newsweek chose to 3 types english, crop out students identified as gifted and talented two-thirds of the original photograph, which showed Mrs. Cheney, both of their daughters, and one of their grandchildren, who were also in 3 types on ap english, the kitchen, getting ready for a simple family dinner. However, Newsweek’s objective in teaching critical skills and talented, running the cropped version was to of essays exam, illustrate its editorial point of view, which could only thinking grade identified as gifted and talented, have been done by shifting the content of the image so that readers just saw what the editors wanted them to see. On Ap! This radical alteration is photo fakery. Newsweek’s choice to run my picture as a political cartoon not only embarrassed and humiliated me and ridiculed the composition essays, subject of the picture, but it ultimately denigrated my profession. Photojournalists fight the 3 types english, credibility battle every day, from combating digitally faked photos to being lumped in with the paparazzi, a group of significance and point of english composition essays, camera-carrying cretins who have no respect for anything, particularly the people they hound. In the case of my Cheney photo, Newsweek is guilty not just of blurring but of blowing up that line between tabloid-style sensationalism and honest photojournalism. This incident is another example of why many people don’t believe what they see or read.

And America clearly notices these shifts in journalism. This week, the respected Pew Research Center for the People and the Press released a poll stating that nearly two-thirds of Americans surveyed believe that news stories are inaccurate and biased — 25 years ago, the number was half that. We photojournalists have a long and storied tradition of striving for objectivity. Many of my colleagues have died flying that banner. I consider myself as much historian as photographer, having spent a 40-year career endeavoring to make photographs that inform, not misinform. My heroes are the likes of Joe Rosenthal, who photographed the Marines raising the flag over Iwo Jima; Eddie Adams, whose photo of a South Vietnamese police officer shooting a Viet Cong suspect changed the course of a war; and countless others who have hung their lives out to capture the facts through the lens of a camera. Their photos have provided a raw and unflinching view of the world and have contributed to a free society’s understanding of sometimes harsh reality. The advent of digital photography and the proliferation of instant images have dulled the power of on ap, historical photos against the steady and relentless 24-hour drumbeat of the “breaking story” syndrome, which holds publications and networks hostage to binding, the relentless demands of feeding the News Monster. It doesn’t help to have the photos misrepresented on top of that.

However, I still believe in the power of the image to 3 types exam, empower, embolden and inspire. Photojournalists, editors and writers must continue the struggle to turn their trained minds and eyes to telling and showing the truth, and holding that quivering line of credibility against what is beginning to feel like insurmountable odds. Frank J. De Maria, the vice president of corporate communications at Newsweek, issued this statement Wednesday in significance of english composition essays, response: We doubt any reasonable reader would, in David’s phrase, think something “sinister, macabre, or even evil” was going on in that image as presented. Yes, the picture has been cropped, an accepted practice of photographers, editors and designers since the invention of the of essays on ap english exam, medium. We cropped the photograph using editorial judgment to binding, show the most interesting part of it. Is it a picture of the former vice president cutting meat? Yes, it is. Has it been altered? No. 3 Types Of Essays! Did we use the image to democracy america topics, make an editorial point — in this case, about the former vice president’s red-blooded, steak-eating, full-throated defense of his views and of essays on ap exam values?

Yes, we did. [ Readers are reminded that we do not permit crude or vulgar words — or their surrogates — in comments. Food Essay! If we find them, we have to reject the entire comment, since we do not undertake internal editing, except in 3 types english, consultation with the writer. At least two dozen otherwise thoughtful remarks about this post have been withheld because of their language. ] Comments are no longer being accepted. I agree with David Kennerly, that to take his photograph and crop it to america essay topics, the extent that the editorial board did is seriously wrong.

Let me first say that Dick Cheney is of essays not my favorite American but I believe the original shot is so completely different than what the scene is depicting as to render it a true distortion. And as such, it discredits David, the former VP and and talented his family and more than anyone else Newsweek Magazine. Journalism requires ethics and to undermine ethics undermines all that we hold to be true. So pay attention Frank Maria and give David a sincere apology and create a published list of ethical editing guidelines that is 3 types of essays on ap exam peer reviewed to firmly set a photo journalist standard for the magazine. It’s not fakery, but it’s a different photograph, making a different point. I think when a person’s creation is repurposed it always stings, but it should hardly be surprising. Nicely put defense of photojournalism. Well done. I missed any butcher reference or evil intent that Mr.

Kennerly sees but I can see why Mr. Kennerly feels so offended about the crop. Plain and simple, the Newsweek crop was horrible. Strike one! And choosing that photo for a reference to annotated, an interrogation story?

Strike two! I think Newsweek photo editors should go back to of essays on ap english, editorial judgment school. I feel for the photographer, since he feels his work has been misused. I appreciate the essay, and annotated bibliography being able to see the original. That said, it does seem like it is the 3 types of essays on ap english, same as quoting someone out of context… which also happens frequently in media. And, as far as photo manipulation goes, fairly small compared to the other photo manipulations. Institutions And Arms Government Essay! In the cropped image, you can tell he is at a home in a kitchen and that other people are there.

It doesn’t take a huge jump of imagination to english exam, figure out what is going on. Poor taste? Yes. But, far from unreasonable. What’s the organic conclusion, big deal?

Could anyone really think that the photo shows something “evil” going on in the english, Cheneys’ kitchen? Lighten up! Is the issue the annotated, cropping of the photo or the use of it for editorial purposes. If the photo was cropped the same way and used in on ap, an article about politicians who are comfortable in the kitchen would there still be an objection. The response by Newsweek–claiming the editorial point they were making was about Cheney’s “red-blooded, steak-eating, full-throated defense of thinking skills students identified as gifted, his views and values”–is stunningly revealing in 3 types, its duplicity. Has any major magazine ever been so willing to lie so transparently, to treat the reading public so contemptuously? The cropping changes the organic conclusion, meaning of the picture; I used to do freelance photography for Newsweek and Time, and 3 types of essays on ap english it bothered me when pictures were cropped in this way. On the other hand, photo fakery was common even before Photoshop made it easier. This happened to a picture of mine in the late 1960s — I had taken a picture of Coretta King after a speech she gave at Harvard. In the food essay conclusion, original photo, she was talking to Martin Peretz (then an instructor at Harvard) and John Glenn. The Newsweek editorial people managed to remove Martin Peretz by airbrushing him out, leaving a picture just showing Mrs.

King talking to Mr. Glenn. “Yes, the picture has been cropped, an accepted practice of photographers, editors and designers since the invention of the medium.” -Frank J. De Maria, Vice President of corporate. communications at Newsweek. Absolutely false. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Historically, cropping has been considered a cardinal sin by the vast majority of professional photographers. I went to art school where I majored in of essays english exam, photography, and annotated bibliography rubric where students were encouraged to use “artistic license” to express their ideas. Even there we were forbidden by our professors to crop our negatives. Of Essays Exam! It was done very rarely, was always obvious, and teaching thinking skills to fourth grade identified and talented considered cheap and lazy. The students themselves respected the history of the medium, and if they couldn’t express their ideas within the format they were working, they were told to try harder.

It was an issue of integrity and creative competence. If you cropped your negatives (this was in the late 90’s by the way, not 40-50 years ago), it was “weak” and “square”. 3 Types Exam! Many of the photographers we studied are/were Magnum legends. I wonder if Mr. De Maria would care to ask the folks over at Magnum what they think of cropping and government essay journalistic integrity. It reminds me of the famous case of the Mountain of the Holy Cross, photographed in 1873 by William Henry Jackson on an expedition in 3 types of essays on ap english exam, Colorado to document the American west. A natural feature of the mountain is a craggy cross-shape defined by the contours of the mountain on one side. It is only visible, and only when the conditions are just right, in winter when a thin layer of snow settles into the contours of the mountainside. Not many people know that Jackson altered his glass plate negative afterwards to exaggerate the and arms government, visible cross-shape. His images were shown in Washington and the cities of the east, where Congress and devout Christians interpreted his “photograph” of the cross as a message from God, justifying westward expansion and the U.S. policy of Manifest Destiny. Photography is a powerful medium, and has the unparalleled ability to touch passions and inflame public opinion.

It should be respected. Put down the 3 types exam, pitchfork, Mr. Kennerley. Cheney looks like he’s getting ready for dinner. Even in psu dissertation binding, the cropped photo. He looks like my dad. Relax. This sounds like a photographer expressing “sour grapes” that he did not maintain control of his photograph. 3 Types On Ap Exam! Kennerly needs to grow up.

Ethics? Yawn. Did they pay the agreed fee? They did? Case closed. What the food, hey! Cheney and family are eating nearly raw meat. Don’t get me started on Toxoplasmosis and what it does to your brain. The two women to the left could have been cropped and used to 3 types of essays on ap exam, illustrate a story ‘Mom and and point Daughter: They don’t talk any more’. A crop of just Dick Cheney’s hands and fish could have been used to 3 types on ap english, illustrate a cooking story. In short I am in complete agreement with Frank J. De Maria of Newsweek.

p.s. Your attempts to link the above photo (‘a raw and unflinching view’ of the Cheney’s at home?) to the raising of the flag at Iwo jima and significance composition the shooting in South Vietnam does you no favors. I would not have expected Newsweek’s response to David Kennerly’s eloquent defense of his profession to be quite so arrogant and self-righteous. All Newsweek is saying is It’s right because we decided it’s right. I will study the magazine’s photographs and 3 types of essays english exam stories, whenever I chance to see them, with far greater skepticism from now on, thanks to Kennerly’s tip-off. Another victory for the whistle-blowers. Cleveland Moffett, Brussels, Belgium. As a photographer, I understand your contempt for cropping. But given its widely used nature, I don’t understand why this particular case is significance essays so disturbing.

To me, the more disturbing part is not the cropping of the 3 types of essays english exam, photo, but the clear, admitted intent of Newsweek to vilify the subject matter. Conclusion! How does that have any place in 3 types english, journalism? “Did we use the image to make an editorial point — in this case, about the former vice president’s red-blooded, steak-eating, full-throated defense of his views and annotated rubric apa values? Yes, we did.” quick…call the waaaaaaambulance. But did you go to magazine publishing school? compare the aspect ratios of the 3 types of essays on ap, original image and the front page of the magazine, and you’ll see that the democracy topics, main subject of both the article and the photo would have been rendered considerably smaller if reproduced as shot – to the point of looking inappropriate for a front cover of a weekly newsmagazine. While I admire the Kennerley’s work, in this case, I think he’s overreacting.

As to your art school profs: setting rules in order to teach technique is on ap english one thing – getting the job done in the real world is quite another. Photographs get cropped all the time. I too don’t like too much freedom being taken by news editors with pictures, and I understand this is teaching thinking skills to fourth students identified as gifted not about the 3 types of essays, merits of the organic conclusion, picture itself although the on ap english exam, photographer himself is discussing it, but I’m afraid this very example is not the best case in point. This is not exactly a newsworthy picture and could otherwise at best be published in an essay on the private moments of high profile people. Still the organic conclusion, photographer did release it through Getty for all to use. As published you don’t get the full wide angle family kitchen reunion thing and unfortunately for the photographer the published picture looks more like an of essays english, very average corporate hotel buffet ad. You still get he’s in a kitchen, could be a buffet, in a private sphere, not looking anything”bad” and obviously not chopping a BBQd Iraqian terrorist. Actually, Newsweek caption would have even hit stronger on the original picture.

If photographers retain control of their work, then surely cropping must meet their approval. I imagine Kenneryl took Newsweek’s money for his work and then signed off. Photojournalists who think their photos are beyond cropping think too much of their work, to bibliography rubric apa, say nothing of themselves. It’s interesting to use the 3 types on ap exam, Iwo Jima photo as an example as it is widely known to have been staged. When I was a college journalism student photographers were taught to shoot both horizontal and vertical images, several of each, because at rubric, the time the photo was shot there was no way to know the of essays english exam, layout requirements. Cropping from horizontal to vertical, as was done here, drastically reduces the technical quality of the image. However, even with the crop it is composition essays evident that other people are in what is clearly a kitchen. The problem with this usage is that the photo, vertical or horizontal, is generally irrelevant to the point of the story. Mark Helprin, in an econtalk interview (Helprin on Copyright, June 29,2009), makes the point that copyright can be used to retain control over how a work is 3 types on ap used. Psu Dissertation! This is a powerful example of why that is important. No different than the photo lies of of essays exam, Stalin, Hitler and Mao who cut people out of pictures and otherwise adjusted them to psu dissertation, suit their ideological positions and changes.

There are many ways to lie, distort and english exam misdirect, and Newsweek is using them – proving how untrustworthy they are. Mr. Kennerly is right to feel insulted and binding denigrated. He should refuse any more Newsweek money. Pictures of the Day: Wednesday, Sept. 16.
