Windows PowerShell: Scripting Crash Course. This extended Windows PowerShell column will jump-start your knowledge of this powerful technology. More of you are getting used to Windows PowerShell and realizing its advantages. With that in mind, this month’s column is going to be a long one. This is dead poets society a lightning overview of jena research, Windows PowerShell scripting, including how to build parameterized scripts. Over the next few months, I’ll focus on specific topics that build on this foundation. If you’re not used to running Windows PowerShell commands in the console, you might find this too advanced, but try to society thesis plow through anyway. You should have a thorough understanding of Windows PowerShell security features. Jena Research Papers? You should already know about execution policy, and dead poets thesis, know what setting you’re using. Essays Brockovich? If you don’t already know the difference between “RemoteSigned” and “AllSigned,” and why one might be better than the other, you might not be ready for society, the following material. You should also know how to execute scripts in the shell, and jena papers, should recall that you always have to provide a path and filename in order to dead poets execute a script.
Finally, you should also know the difference between running a script in english, the Integrated Scripting Environment (ISE) and the console. Dead Poets Society? In the ISE, scripts run in the global scope. Splendid? In the normal shell console, scripts get their own scope. I'll review scope, but you should already have an idea of dead society thesis, what it means and essays websites, what it does. If you’re not feeling quite up to speed, take a look at my book, “Learn Windows PowerShell in a Month of Lunches” (Manning Publications, 2011), and the companion Web site and see if those resources can help you build a better foundation. Try to follow along as you read this column. Try the examples.
If you type (or copy and dead, paste) the script examples into the Windows PowerShell ISE starting on line 1, then your line numbers will correspond with the line numbers in on erin brockovich, the descriptions. A Windows PowerShell script file is nothing more than a plain-text file that has a .PS1 filename extension. The “1” doesn’t refer to the version of Windows PowerShell, but rather the version of the poets thesis language engine. Windows PowerShell version 1 and 2 both use language engine version 1. That’s why both versions of the shell are installed into a v1.0 folder under WindowsSystem32WindowsPowerShell. A Windows PowerShell script isn’t exactly like a command-line batch file, and running a script isn’t precisely the same as running the same commands yourself in the same sequence. For example, open a console window and run the essays following, pressing Enter after each line (remember not to type the line numbers): Now type those exact same lines into a script file, or the ISE script editing pane, and run the script. Dead Thesis? You’ll get different-looking results. Each time you hit Enter in Windows PowerShell, you start a new pipeline. Whatever commands you typed are run in that single pipeline.
At the end of the pipeline, Windows PowerShell converts its contents into brockovich a text display. When you run the dead society two commands in the normal console, you’ve done so in two distinct pipelines. Windows PowerShell was able to construct a unique display for each set of output. When entered into a script, however, both commands ran in the same pipeline. The Windows PowerShell formatting system isn’t sophisticated enough to construct the same unique output for two different sets of results. Essays On Erin? Try running this in the console: Those results should look the same as they did when you ran the script containing those two commands. Poets? In this case, both commands ran in a single pipeline. That’s what happened when you ran the script. The practical upshot of all this is that a script should produce only one kind of output. It’s a bad idea, due in large part to the limitations of the formatting system.
There are other considerations, as well. You don’t want a script dumping several different kinds of things into the pipeline at economic research the same time. Focus on that as a rule for everything we’ll cover. A script should generate one, and only one, type of output. Dead Poets? The only exception would be if it’s a script being used as a repository for multiple functions.
In that case, each function should generate one, and only one, type of output. Think of economic, variables as a box. You can put one or more things, even dissimilar things, into poets society thesis this box. Essays Brockovich? The box has a name, and in Windows PowerShell that name can include almost anything. “Var” can be a variable name, as can “ ”. In that second example, the curly brackets enclose a variable name that contains spaces, which is pretty ugly. As a good practice, stick with variable names that include letters, numbers and underscores. Using a variable’s name references the entire “box.” If you want to reference the contents of the dead society thesis box, add a dollar sign: $var. You’ll often see Windows PowerShell variables preceded with the dollar sign because the whole point of using one is to get at the contents. Essays On Erin? It’s important to remember, however, that the dollar sign isn’t part of the variable name.
It’s just a cue to tell Windows PowerShell that you want the contents, rather than the box itself. For example: Those examples show you how to place items into dead thesis a variable using the assignment operator (=). That last example creates an essays array, because Windows PowerShell interprets all comma-separated lists as an dead poets thesis array, or collection, of items. The first example assigns a string object, with the characters in essays on erin brockovich, the string contained within quotation marks. There’s one aspect of dead poets, Windows PowerShell that can confuse newcomers.
Windows PowerShell doesn’t “understand” any meaning you may associate with a variable name. A variable like $computername doesn’t “tell” the shell that the variable will contain a computer name. Similarly, $numbers doesn’t “tell” the shell that a variable will contain more than one number. On A? The shell doesn’t care if you use a plural variable name. The statement. is equally valid to the shell, as is. When a variable does contain multiple values, however, you can use a special syntax to dead poets access just a single one of them.
You would use $numbers as the first item, $numbers is the second, $numbers[-1] is the last, $numbers[-2] is the second-last and acid, so on. As a best practice, use single quotes to delimit a variable unless you have a specific reason to do otherwise. There are three specific instances where you would want to use double quotes. The first is when you need to poets society insert a variable’s contents into a string. Within double quotes only, Windows PowerShell will look for the $, and will assume that everything after the $, up to the first character that’s illegal in a variable name, is a variable name. Research Papers? The contents of that variable will replace the variable name and thesis, the $:
The $prompt will now contain “My name is Don” because $name will be replaced with the variable contents. Jena Economic? This is a great trick for joining strings together without having to concatenate them. Within double quotes, Windows PowerShell will also look for its escape character, the backtick or grave accent, and act accordingly. Here are a couple of examples: In the dead poets thesis first example, the first $ is being “escaped.” That removes its special meaning as a variable accessor. If $computer contained 'SERVER,' then $debug would contain $computer contains SERVER. In the second example, `t represents a horizontal tab character, so Windows PowerShell will place a tab between each Column. You can read about other special escape characters in the shell’s about_escape_characters help topic.
Finally, use double quotes when a string needs to contain single quotes: In this example, the literal string is name='BITS.' The double quotes contain the rain research whole thing. Both $filter1 and poets society, $filter2 end up containing exactly the same thing, but $filter2 gets there by summary, using the variable-replacement trick of double quotes. Note that only the outermost set of quotes actually matters. Poets Society? The single quotes within the string don’t matter to Windows PowerShell. Those single quotes are just literal characters. Windows PowerShell doesn’t interpret them. Everything in Windows PowerShell is an acid object. Even a simple string such as “name” is an object, of the type System.String.
You can pipe any object to Get-Member to see its type name (that is, the kind of object it is) as well as its members, which includes its properties and dead poets, methods: Use a period after a variable name to tell the shell, “I don’t want to access the entire object within this variable. I want to access just one of thesis on a thousand splendid, its properties or methods.” After the period, provide the property or method name. Method names are always followed by a set of poets society, parentheses. Some methods accept input arguments, and those go within the parentheses in a comma-separated list. Other methods require no arguments, and so the parentheses are empty, but don't forget the parentheses: Notice line two. Thesis Thousand? It starts by accessing the first item in the $svc variable. The period means, “I don’t want that entire object.
I just want a property or method.” This accesses just the name property. Line five illustrates how to access a method, by providing its name after a period, followed by dead poets, parentheses. A period is normally an illegal character within a variable name, because the period means we want to access a property or method. That means line two in essays, the following example won’t work the way you might expect: On line two, $name will contain Service is BITS.ToUpper() whereas on dead poets thesis line four $name will contain ”Service is research BITS.” Aside from their use with object methods, parentheses also act as an order-of-execution marker for Windows PowerShell, just like in algebra. In other words, parentheses tell the shell to “execute this first.” The entire parenthetical expression is replaced by whatever that expression produces. Here’s a mind-bending couple of poets society thesis, examples: On line one, $name will contain the name of the first service on the system. Acid Rain Information? Reading this takes a bit of effort.
Start with the parenthetical expression. Dead Poets Society Thesis? That’s what Windows PowerShell will start with as well. The “Get-Service” resolves to faithfullness a collection, or array, of services. The accesses the first item in an array, so that will be the first service. Because it’s followed by a period, we know we’re accessing a property or method of dead thesis, that service, rather than the entire service object. Finally, we pull out on erin brockovich, just the poets society name of the summary service. On line two, the parenthetical expression is reading the contents of dead, a text file. Assuming the file contains one computer name per summary, line, “Get-Content”” will return an array of computer names. Dead Poets Society Thesis? Those are fed to the “–computerName” parameter of “Get-Service.” In this case, the acid research information shell can feed any parenthetical expression that returns an array of strings to the. “–computerName” parameter, because the parameter is designed to accept arrays of strings. Scope is society thesis a programming concept that acts as a containerization system.
Things like variables, aliases, PSDrives and other Windows PowerShell elements are all stored in acid research, a scope. The shell maintains a hierarchy of scopes, and poets society, has a set of rules that determine how scopes can interact and share information with each other. The shell itself is a single scope, called the global scope. When you run a script, it constructs a new scope and the script runs within that. Research Information? Anything created by thesis, the script, such as a new variable, is stored within the script’s scope. It isn’t accessible by the top-level shell. When the script finishes running, its scope is discarded, and anything created within that scope disappears.
For example, create a script that contains the following (don’t forget to macbeth not type the dead poets line numbers), and summary, then run that script from the console window: After running the script, manually run “Dir SYS:” and poets thesis, you should see an error. That’s because the SYS: drive was created in the script. Once the script was done, everything it created was discarded. The SYS: drive no longer exists. Not everything in the shell is scoped. Items such as modules are handled globally at all times. A script can load a module and economic research papers, the module will remain loaded after the script is dead poets society done.
If a scope tries to economic research access something that wasn’t created within that scope, then Windows PowerShell looks to the next-higher scope (the “parent” scope). That’s why the dead society thesis Dir alias worked in that script you just entered. Although Dir didn’t exist in the script’s scope, it did exist in the next-higher scope: the global scope. Brockovich? A scope is dead poets free to create an item that has the same name as an item from a higher-level scope, though. Essays Of Gods Faithfullness? Here’s another script to dead poets society try: That may look weird, but the first time it ran “Dir,” it didn’t exist in the script’s scope. It used the brockovich higher-level Dir alias. Dead Poets Society Thesis? That alias points to Get-ChildItem, so it displayed a familiar directory listing. Then, the script creates a new alias named Dir. This points to Get-Alias.
That’s what was run the second time. None of this affected the top-level Dir alias. Try running Dir in the shell after running the previous script, and of gods faithfullness, you’ll still get a directory listing. Scope can be especially confusing when it comes to variables. As a rule, a given scope should never access out-of-scope items, especially variables. There’s a syntax for dead society thesis, doing so, such as using $global:var to forcibly access the macbeth summary essays global scope’s $var variable, but that’s a bad practice except under very specific circumstances. Windows PowerShell Scripting Language. Windows PowerShell contains a very simplified scripting language of less than two dozen keywords. That’s a stark contrast to a full programming language such as VBScript, which contains almost 300 keywords. Simplified though it may be, the Windows PowerShell language is dead poets more than sufficient to do the job.
I’ll review its major scripting constructs now, although you can always get more help on on erin brockovich these by reading the appropriate “about” topic within the shell. Poets Society Thesis? For example, help about_switchcontains information on the Switch construct, while help about_if contains information on the If construct. Run help about* for a list of macbeth summary essays, all “about” topics. This is the Windows PowerShell main decision-making construct. In its full form, it looks like this: The “If” keyword is a mandatory part of this construct. A parenthetical expression follows that must evaluate to either True or False. Windows PowerShell will always interpret zero as False, and any nonzero value as True. Windows PowerShell also recognizes the built-in variables $True and $False as representing those Boolean values.
If the expression in poets thesis, parentheses works out to True, then the commands in the following set of curly brackets will execute. Faithfullness? If the expression is False, then the commands won’t execute. That’s really all you need for a valid If construct. You can go a bit further by dead society thesis, providing one or more “ElseIf” sections. Research? These work the same way as the If construct. They get their own parenthetical expression.
If it’s True, the commands within the following curly brackets will execute. If not, they won’t. You can wrap up with an Else block, which will execute if none of the dead thesis preceding blocks execute. Only the block associated with the essays brockovich first True expression will execute. For example, if $this did not equal $that, and $those did not equal $them, then the commands on line four would execute—and nothing else.
Windows PowerShell won’t even evaluate the second elseif expression on line five. The # character is a comment character, making Windows PowerShell essentially ignore anything from there until a carriage return. Also notice the dead society thesis care with which those constructs were formatted. You might also see formatting like this from some folks: It doesn’t matter where you place the macbeth curly brackets. However, what does matter is that you be consistent in your placement so your scripts are easier to read.
It’s also important to indent, to the exact same level, every line within the curly brackets. The Windows PowerShell ISE lets you use the Tab key for that purpose, and it defaults to society a four-character indent. Indenting your code is a core best practice. If you don’t, you’ll have a tough time properly matching opening and closing curly brackets in acid rain research, complex scripts. Dead Society Thesis? Also, all of the other Windows PowerShell kids will make fun of macbeth, you. Consider this poorly formatted script:
That’s a lot harder to read, debug, troubleshoot and maintain. While the space after the closing parentheses isn’t necessary, it does make your script easier to read. The indented code isn’t necessary, but it makes your script easier to follow. Consider this instead: Placing a single closing curly bracket on a line by itself isn’t required by the shell, but it’s appreciated by human eyes.
Be a neat formatter, and you’ll have fewer problems in your scripts. This is a looping construct in Windows PowerShell. Dead Poets Society Thesis? It’s designed to repeat a block of commands as long as some condition is True, or until a condition becomes True. Here’s the basic usage: In this variation of the construct, the commands within the jena economic research curly brackets will always execute at dead thesis least once. The While condition isn’t evaluated until after the first execution. You can move the While, in which case the commands will only execute if the condition is True in the first place: Notice the on a thousand splendid suns second example doesn’t use a comparison operator such as -eq. That’s because the dead Test-Path cmdlet happens to return True or False to suns begin with.
There’s no need to compare that to True or False in order for the expression to work. The parenthetical expression used with these scripting constructs merely needs to poets thesis simplify down to True or False. If you’re using a command such as Test-Path, which always returns True or False, that’s all you need. Jena Research Papers? As always, there’s an “about” topic in dead society thesis, the shell that demonstrates other ways to summary use this construct. This construct is similar in operation to the ForEach-Object cmdlet. It differs only in its syntax. The purpose of ForEach is to take an dead thesis array (or collection, which in Windows PowerShell is the same as an array) and enumerate the objects in the array so you can work with one at a time:
It’s easy for newcomers to overthink this construct. Keep in mind that the plural English word “services” doesn’t mean anything to essays brockovich Windows PowerShell. That variable name is used to dead society remind us it contains one or more services. Essays Websites? Just because it’s plural doesn’t make the shell behave in a special fashion. The “in” keyword on line two is part of the society ForEach syntax. The $service variable is made up.
It could easily have been $fred or $coffee and it would have worked in just the same way. Windows PowerShell will repeat the construct’s commands—the ones contained within curly brackets—one time for each object in of gods, the second variable ($services). Each time, it will take a single object from the second variable ($services) and place it in the first variable ($service). Within this construct, use the poets society thesis first variable ($service) to work with an individual object. On line three, the period indicates “I don’t want to work with the entire object, just one of its members—the Stop method.” There are times when using ForEach is inevitable and desirable.
However, if you have a bit of macbeth essays, programming or scripting experience, you can sometimes leap to using ForEach when it isn’t the poets society thesis best approach. The previous example isn’t a good reason to use ForEach. Wouldn’t this be easier: The point here is to evaluate your use of ForEach. Make sure it’s the only way to accomplish the task at hand. Jena Research Papers? Here are some instances where ForEach is dead thesis probably the only way to go: When you need to execute a method against a bunch of objects and there’s no cmdlet that performs the equivalent action.
When you have a bunch of essays of gods, objects and need to perform several consecutive actions against each. Poets Thesis? When you have an action that can only be performed against one object at a time, but your script may be working with one or more objects, and you have no way of knowing in advance. Windows PowerShell has several other scripting constructs, including Switch, For and so on. These are all documented in “about” help topics within the shell. Sometimes, you can use the essays brockovich constructs covered here to replace those other constructs. For example, you can replace Switch with an society thesis If construct that uses multiple ElseIf sections. You can replace For with ForEach, or even with the ForEach-Object cmdlet. For example, having a loop that executes exactly 10 times: It’s up to you to macbeth summary select the best construct to dead society thesis get the job done.
If you’re browsing the Internet for scripts, be prepared to thesis on a splendid suns run across any and all variations. A function is a special kind of construct used to contain a group of related commands that perform a single, specific task. Poets Society? Generally speaking, you can take any Windows PowerShell script and rain research information, “wrap” it within a function: This defines a new function called “Mine.” That basically turns Mine into a command, meaning you can run the function simply by entering its name. That’s what line five does. It runs the function.
Functions are typically contained within a script file. A single script can contain multiple functions. Poets Society Thesis? Functions can themselves even contain other functions. However, functions are scoped items. That means you can only use a function within the macbeth essays same scope in which it was created. If you put a function into a script, and then run that script, the function will only dead society, be available within the script and only for the duration of the script. When the script finishes running, the function—like everything else in the script’s scope—goes away.
Here’s one example: Suppose you enter this into a single script file and jena economic research papers, run that script. Line seven executes the function One, which starts on line one. Line five executes a function named Two, which starts on line two. So the dead poets society thesis result will be a directory listing, which is on essays faithfullness line three inside function Two. However, the next line to execute will be line eight, and poets society thesis, that will result in an error. The script doesn’t contain a function named Two. Function Two is buried within function One. Essays Of Gods Faithfullness? As a result, that exists within the function One scope. Only other things within function One can see Two. Attempting to call Two from anyplace else will result in an error.
It’s rare to create a script that’s intended to do exactly the same thing every time it runs. More frequently, you’ll have scripts that contain some kind of variable data or variable behavior. You can accommodate these variations with parameters. Parameters are defined in a special way at the top of the script. Dead Poets Thesis? You can precede this definition with comments, but it must otherwise be the first executable lines of code within the script. Within the parameter definition area, each parameter is separated from the english next by a comma. Poets Thesis? In keeping with the idea of neat formatting, it helps to place each parameter on a line of its own. Here is an example: This example defines three parameters. Macbeth Summary? Within the script, these are simply used like any other variable.
You’ll notice that on line four, I assigned a default value to the $attemptcount parameter. The default will be overridden by any input parameter, but will be used if the script is run without that parameter being specified. Here are several ways in which the script might be run, assuming I saved it as Test.ps1: The script accepts parameters pretty much like any cmdlet. Variable names are used as the parameter names, specified with the usual dash that precedes all parameter names in Windows PowerShell. Here’s a breakdown of how it works: On line one, I’m only dead poets, specifying one of the essays on erin parameters—$logfile will thus be empty, and $attemptcount will contain 5, its default. On line two, I’m specifying all three parameters, although I’m doing so using shortened parameter names. As with cmdlets, you only need to dead poets type enough of the parameter name for Windows PowerShell to on erin know which one you’re talking about. Line three shows me again all three parameters, although I’m doing so positionally, without using parameter names. As long as I remember to provide values in the exact order in which the parameters are listed in the script, this will work fine.
Line four shows what happens if you’re not careful. Here, $computername will contain 'SERVER' and $logfile will contain 2, while $attemptcount will contain 5. That’s probably not what I intended. When you don’t use parameter names, it’s harder to society thesis be flexible. It’s also more difficult for someone else to decode what you meant, which makes it harder for them to troubleshoot any problems. Line five is a better example. Here, I’ve specified parameters out of order, but that’s fine because I used parameter names. As a general rule, I always use parameter names for the greatest degree of flexibility. I don’t need to remember the macbeth order in which they came. Windows PowerShell supports a technique for specifying additional information about parameters.
This lets you declare a parameter as mandatory, accepting input from the pipeline and so forth. Poets Thesis? This technique is called Cmdlet Binding. It doesn’t change the way the script uses parameters. It simply gives the shell a bit more information about the parameters. Essays On Erin Brockovich? You’ll find this technique more commonly used in a function, but the syntax is poets society thesis valid within a script as well. Papers? Here’s a simple example: All I added was the [CmdletBinding()] instruction as the first executable line of code within the script. It’s okay for comments to dead thesis precede this, but nothing else. I also added a [Parameter()] instruction to two of my parameters. Economic Research Papers? Within that [Paramater()] instruction, I’ve indicated that these parameters are mandatory. Dead Poets Society? Now, if someone tries to run the macbeth essays script without specifying these parameters, Windows PowerShell will prompt them for the information.
Notice that the last parameter doesn’t have any special instructions, and all three parameters still appear in a comma-separated list (meaning the first two parameters are followed by dead poets society thesis, commas). There are a ton of other instructions you can specify for a parameter, which you can read about in the about_functions_advanced_parameters help topic. This was a whirlwind review of essays, some key Windows PowerShell scripting-related concepts. I hope you’ve learned a thing or two. Dead Poets Society? Being able to build parameterized scripts is especially useful, because you can make scripts that look and behave like Windows PowerShell native cmdlets.

26 Graphic Design Resume Tips for society, Landing Your Dream Job. When it comes to creating resumes, graphic designers are lucky. Not many fields allow for thesis splendid suns, potential employees to directly demonstrate their work-related skills with the resume itself. Pastry chefs don#8217;t get to bake their resumes into a cake, teachers can#8217;t assign their resumes as homework, and lawyers aren#8217;t given the chance to dead poets society, defend their resumes to a jury. But graphic designers can – and research papers, should – treat their resume as they would a sample in their portfolio. The design of your resume can help potential employers and dead poets society thesis, clients get a feel for research, your style and creativity, which is something you just can#8217;t get from a standard letter-style resume. Graphic design resumes can be challenging, since the standard rules of resume creation do not apply . Your resume has to society, ride a fine line between pizazz and professionalism—too much of one and not enough of the other can hurt your chances of employment.
Whether you#8217;re just starting out your career or you#8217;re an old pro who#8217;s looking for new opportunities, these graphic design resume tips will help put you one step closer to your goal. The very first item to rain research information, include in your resume is dead thesis, your full contact info. Include your name, phone number, e-mail address and any pertinent URLs, such as your online portfolio or website. Depending on the situation, you may want to include more information. If you#8217;re sending your resume via snail mail, then you#8217;ll definitely want to include your home or office address. Forget to macbeth summary, add your contact information to your resume and you can kiss your chances of getting hired goodbye. Poets Society Thesis! Photo Credit: Charlotte Allen.
Your contact info should be placed at the very top or bottom of the essays on erin brockovich page so that it can be easily located. Dead! If your resume is two pages, be sure to include the acid information contact info on the second page as well. This way, potential employers will still be able to contact you in dead the event that your resume pages are accidentally separated. A long time ago, someone decided it was a good idea to essays, include an #8220;objective#8221; statement at the top of a resume—even though everybody knows that the objective of dead society thesis any resume is to find employment. As such, objective statements are starting to go out of fashion-frankly, you can take them or leave them. Graphic design resume already tend to have very unique formats; it doesn’t seem all that important to stay traditional when your resume itself will be anything but. If you do decide to include an objective statement, make sure it#8217;s not something generic like #8220;Objective: I want to thesis on a thousand splendid suns, have a career as a professional designer.#8221; Put your unique spin on your objective statement and dead society thesis, personalize it for the job you#8217;re applying for. Make the objective something that would benefit your employer as much as it would benefit you. Essays! For example, your objective could be to help new businesses create long-lasting, recognizable brand identities. If possible, your resume should fit on a single page.
Photo Credit: Anton Yermolov. Society Thesis! You#8217;ve done a lot of great things with your life, both professionally and personally—but not every one of essays of gods faithfullness your achievements needs to be listed in your resume. Keep it simple. The person reading your resume has to go through several applicants, and dead poets, if your resume is too long or too dense, you#8217;ll hurt your chances of making an impression. Think of your resume like a snapshot—a single photograph can tell a detailed, vivid story without needing extraneous details. Your resume is like a snapshot of your entire professional career thus far.
It#8217;s like a highlight reel that shows only the best of the best. The best resumes are a single page, if possible. It#8217;s entirely okay to spill over onto two pages if necessary, but it#8217;s always a good idea to have a one-page version of your resume ready to go in case an employer specifies that they only economic research, want to see one-page resumes. There was a time when #8220;everybody#8221; exaggerated on their resumes, but that was before Google was invented. These days, employers and clients can and will find out everything there is to know about a designer before working with them, so resist the urge to embellish. For one thing, if you#8217;re caught in your own lie, it#8217;s going to pretty much nullify your chances of getting the job. But the other factor you have to consider is that employers are going to hold you to whatever skill level you claim to dead society, have. Of Gods! If you can#8217;t deliver the results they expect, the job may not last long even if you get it.
There are, however, some gray areas where honesty is dead, concerned. If there are a few blemishes in your work history (such as being let go from a previous position), you can decide exactly how much information you want to reveal. Don#8217;t feel like you#8217;re obligated to research, showcase your worst moments along with your best. Unless you#8217;re going for a truly offbeat presentation, employers could probably care less about your preference for fruity shampoo. Photo Credit: Luke Sutton. Stick to the facts—your resume should be a representation of your professional experience and skill level. You don#8217;t need to include extraneous details like your age, your part-time job in high school or your favorite hobbies. Dead Poets! Your resume should focus on the information that makes you look like the top candidate for the job. However, there are a few details you may want to include that don#8217;t necessarily line up directly with the job you#8217;re applying for, but are helpful for understanding you as a person. For example, if you served in the military, you#8217;d want to english, consider including that detail if your military experience helped to inform the way you conduct your work as a designer (you#8217;re used to taking orders and society thesis, staying cool in jena economic high-pressure situations). Make sure to be detailed when talking about your past work experiences and clients.
Recruiters want to know what you did for past employers, but it#8217;s not enough to dead poets thesis, just list a bunch of tasks that you were responsible for. You also want to include the results of your hard work. Just saying that you helped a past client run a print campaign isn#8217;t going to excite anyone. Essays! But proving that your print designs helped drive up sales and dead thesis, conversions will definitely get people#8217;s attention. If you can provide specific statistics to back up your claims, you#8217;ll make a much bigger impression. Please do not call yourself a #8220;graphic design ninja.#8221; Please.
Recruiters hate this kind of stuff, and you won#8217;t be the first designer to try and dazzle them with how cool and witty you are. And in doing so, you#8217;ll automatically look the opposite of cool or witty—you#8217;ll come off as an annoying slave to trends. There may be the research rare occasion when you see a job advertisement looking specifically for a #8220;design ninja#8221; or #8220;rock star#8221; or something equally weird. If that#8217;s the case, then by all means, play to the room—but you#8217;ll probably want to do that in the cover letter anyway. One of the most common graphic design resume mistakes that people make is writing a cover letter that#8217;s basically just a long form version of their resume. That#8217;s not what a cover letter is for—it#8217;s your introduction to the employer and a chance to dead poets society thesis, explain why you fit what they#8217;re looking for. Your cover letter should be personalized for the business you#8217;re applying to.
When responding to a job listing or want ad, your cover letter should be a direct response to jena research, whatever it is the employer is asking for in a designer. For example, if the ad stresses that they need someone who can start working as soon as possible, your cover letter should mention your availability. Keep the letter brief; it should only be one page, period. Use small paragraphs and get to the point as quickly as possible. You can assume your cover letter is going to be skimmed for information, so don#8217;t make it too dense. Dead Poets! End your letter with a professional salutation that includes your contact information. When you#8217;re done writing your resume, you#8217;re not actually done writing your resume.
You still have to on erin brockovich, edit for dead poets society, spelling, grammar and clarity. Automatic spellcheckers aren#8217;t infallible, and on erin, don#8217;t always account for phrasing and thesis, proper nouns. You#8217;ll want to make sure the names of your references and past employers are all spelled correctly. Grammar is a little harder to check, and even spellcheckers that also check grammar can miss glaring errors. It helps to read your resume out loud; when something doesn#8217;t sound right, it can be an indication that the grammar is off. This also helps you catch omitted words. If you don#8217;t feel comfortable with checking your own work, have someone else do it for you. This is a good idea even if you do feel confident in thousand your own abilities as an society thesis, editor; a second pair of eyes will often catch something you never noticed before. Put away Microsoft Word for now. Essays! When creating the look of society your resume, whip out design software such as InDesign or Illustrator. That way, you can create a cohesive design scheme that you can use both online and in print.
This also helps make it easier for employers and macbeth summary, clients to bridge the thesis gap between your print resume and your online portfolio, since they have a similar visual brand. Acid Rain Research Information! The look of dead society your resume gives you a chance to essays of gods faithfullness, show off the more unique parts of your personality. Photo Credit: Rianti Wong. Showing people your true personality is a bit of a risk. After all, there#8217;s a chance you might not be the sort of person they want to work with. But that#8217;s okay. In the thesis long run, you#8217;re going to jena research, have more success working for clients who understand and appreciate you and your work.
It#8217;s better to poets, be rejected for being yourself than to try and fake a completely made-up persona because you think it#8217;s what employers are looking for. On Erin! That being said, you still need to be professional and demonstrate to employers that you can use your style to sell a brand. Poets Society Thesis! In this case, the research information brand just happens to be you, so you should approach it from the same angle you#8217;d approach any other client. Figure out what makes you stand out and inject those unique qualities into your work, but in a way that will reach your audience (who, in this case, are potential employers and clients.) Templates are useful tools for making quick designs, but as a rule of thumb, you shouldn#8217;t use templates to create your resume. Dead Society Thesis! For starters, you never know who else is using the same template. If a potential client or employer sees you have the same resume design as another designer, they#8217;re likely going to jena economic, ignore the both of you. Poets Society Thesis! Worse case scenario: the thesis thousand splendid employer is actually impressed by the template design, and then disappointed later on when they discover that you have a different style and skill level altogether. The design you pick for your resume should be representative of what you can do for a potential employer. Sure, you save time and energy using a template—but you should want to put time and energy into something that represents you. If you do decide to use a template, you should at least make enough alterations to the design so that it doesn#8217;t look like you used a template. Graphic design resume templates can be a good learning tool for figuring out techniques to dead poets society, use in your own design, but using a template like a fill-in-the-blank form is just going to hurt your chances of employment.
Color in your resume works best in small doses. Photo Credit: Sarah Catanzariti. Be smart about your color choices. Unlike other professionals, graphic designers get to thesis thousand splendid suns, inject some color and personality into their resumes. This can be highly advantageous, as different colors can invoke different emotions from your audience. Using the dead thesis right colors in your resume can help you play to the recruiter#8217;s emotions. For example, the color blue evokes feelings of security and stability, which would therefore make you seem like a secure choice for the job. Use too many colors at brockovich, once, and you risk muddling your message and making your resume look unprofessional. Again, you have to think of yourself as a brand; most brands only dead poets thesis, use one or two colors to represent themselves. Plus, using fewer colors gives you more printing options (see CMYK vs PMS printing) and makes the design easier to convert to essays faithfullness, black-and-white if need be. When it comes to resumes, fashion should never trump functionality.
At the dead society thesis end of the day, your resume is research, still a resume and it has to dead poets, function as one, which means recruiters need to be able to read the important information you#8217;ve included. Fonts should be simple and readable. Forget all the fancy flourished font faces and stick with something legible. You should also make sure the font size is big enough, both in your digital and physical resumes. The layout of your resume should have a logical flow and arranged in a way that favors the way we read the page (hint: it#8217;s left to on a splendid suns, right.) Color can also be an poets, issue, both font color and the surrounding colors used in the design. Some colors clash and can be hard to of gods, read, while others blend into one another in a way that makes them practically invisible. Poets! At the end of the day, the information in on erin brockovich your resume should take priority over your design aspirations. Thesis! Infographic-style resumes can make a great impression, so long as the style doesn#8217;t overpower the substance. Photo Credit: Stuart Mayhew.
Who doesn#8217;t love an infographic? They break down big picture ideas into easy-to-digest points, and do so in a way that#8217;s entertaining and exciting. A lot of the best graphic design resumes contain the best elements of infographics, and some designers have excelled at completely converting their resumes into an infographic format. Tread carefully if you decide to go this route. If you focus too much on acid research information the visual design, you#8217;ll run the risk of overshadowing the dead important information your resume contains.
If you go too far off the beaten path, you might find recruiters aren#8217;t really reading your resume at all. Remember, these people often have piles of resumes to sort through, so if your resume takes more effort than most to acid rain, read, it#8217;s going to dead poets thesis, come off as a negative. Another way to appeal to recruiters who have to read dozens of essays of gods resumes at a time is to use ample whitespace. This is true for society, both your resume and your cover letter, even if you stick to a standard, text-only resume. Whitespace helps break up your resume and makes it easier to read. On A! Photo Credit: Dejmus.
Whitespace makes it easier to quickly scan for information, which means that all the dead poets society important points you make in english essays websites your resume and cover letter have a better chance of actually being seen. Use lists to break up information and keep paragraphs brief. When your resume is a wall of poets society text, it exhausts the eye and makes the essays recruiter miss out on a lot of the most important points because they#8217;re not reading every single word. Be consistent in the way you present yourself. How many times in society these tips do we have to rain research, say it? You are a brand, so treat yourself like one. Society! Have a consistent branding design scheme in any media that represents you. Your resume should have a design that matches your portfolio, cover letter, business card and anything else you might show off to a potential employer. The same goes for acid rain research, any digital portfolios, resumes or promotional websites you might use. Poets Society Thesis! This demonstrates to rain research information, recruiters that you have the ability to craft an entire branded identity, and that you can keep that consistent design quality throughout multiple mediums. Recruiters never need to play the essays websites guessing game as to which business card goes with which resume; they can tell just by looking that the two are a match. Your resume should match the brand identity of poets society thesis your business cards, portfolio and any other print media you use. Photo Credit: Afifah Idrus. Send a digital copy in PDF format. Depending on the situation, you may have to send a digital copy of your resume to potential employers. In this case, PDF is the best format. Why PDF? Well for websites, starters, you never know what kind of office program your employer is dead thesis, used to, and acid, there#8217;s a chance that a text document that looks fine on your computer will not look the same on theirs due to dead, compatibility issues. Jena! Sure, most people can open a .doc file, but it#8217;s a somewhat unpredictable format depending on what program a person uses to open it.
Practically everybody can open a PDF, and it#8217;s going to look the same across the board no matter what (provided you embed fonts correctly). You don#8217;t have to dead poets society thesis, worry about summary, compatibility issues or whether or not they#8217;ll have the right fonts. Most importantly, this allows you to have more graphical options for the look of poets your resume. Just one pro-tip for sending a digital copy of your resume: avoid using a generic file name like #8220;resume.pdf.#8221; Instead, put your name right inside the file name itself, such as #8220;John-Smith-Resume.pdf.#8221; Keep it as simple as that. You might use other words in your file names to keep things organized (such as #8220;John-Smith-Resume-Final-Draft.pdf#8221;) but you want to keep these words out jena papers, of the file that you actually send to thesis, employers. Why would you go through the trouble of creating a resume that is colorful and essays websites, visually appealing just to throw out all of your hard work by photocopying it? Photocopies might be cost effective, but they#8217;re not as effective at getting you the dead poets society thesis job, mostly because they strip away all the personality and charm your resume design once had. For starters, unless you designed your resume to look good in black-and-white, you#8217;re going to lose a lot of the detail and impact your design once had. Photocopies also tend to be extremely low quality.

Photocopier paper is of cheap quality and macbeth summary essays, it feels that way, too. Plus, photocopies always have that oily feel and strong smell from the ink that#8217;s used. The only time you want to use a photocopier is if you#8217;re running off a text-only version of your resume or copying your cover letter. Thesis! And even then, you#8217;ll have better results just running it off of summary your printer each time, preferably on poets thesis a professional-looking letterhead.
Your resume should be nicely printed on quality stock. Photo Credit: Ashley Spencer. Make your resume really pop by using high quality paper stock. If a recruiter can simply feel the difference between your resume and dead poets thesis, everybody else#8217;s, it will be a huge help towards getting it to the top of the pile.
Just like any other print media, the faithfullness feel of your resume can say a lot about you to potential employers. Dead Poets Society! A weak, flimsy stock portrays the message that you#8217;re a weak, flimsy designer, even if that#8217;s not the case. You don#8217;t have to go overboard. After all, you#8217;re trying to make money here, not spend it. Of Gods! But you should see this as an investment towards your future. It's just a (grammatically flawed) sentence that hints at Klinenberg's argument. Compare to a good thesis for the same prompt: Through consideration of quantitative data, exploring possible counterarguments to his position, and judicious use of striking phrasings and words, Klinenberg strengthens both the logic and persuasiveness of his argument that Americans need to greatly reduce their reliance on dead poets society air conditioning. The above thesis clearly specifies both what the author's argument is and what aspects of the argument will be analyzed in the essay . If you want more practice writing strong thesis statements, use our complete list of SAT essay prompts as inspiration. #3: Specific Examples That Support Your Point. To support your thesis, you'll need to draw on english essays specific examples from the passage of the poets techniques you claim the author uses. Make sure to provide enough information for each example to make it clear how it is relevant to your thesis - and stop there.
No need to paraphrase the thousand splendid suns entire passage, or explain why you agree or disagree with the dead society thesis author's argument - write enough that the reader can understand what your example is and be done. #4: Explanations of the Examples That Support Your Point. It isn't enough to just summarize or paraphrase specific excerpts taken from the passage and call it a day. In each example paragraph, you must not only papers, include details about a example, but also include an explanation of poets, how each example demonstrates an argument technique and of gods, why it is persuasive. For instance, let's say you were planning on discussing how the poets thesis author uses vivid language to persuade the reader to thesis on a thousand splendid suns, agree with him. Yes, you'd need to start by quoting parts of the passage where the author uses vivid language, but you then also need to explain why that example demonstrates vivid language and why it would be persuasive to the reader. Your conclusion should restate your thesis and briefly mention the examples you wrote about in your essay (and how they supported your thesis ). If you haven't done it already in poets, your essay, this is NOT the place to write about a broader context, or to contradict yourself, or to economic papers, add further examples you didn't discuss. End on a strong note.
Now that you know what has to be in your essay, how do you fit it all in? It’s not enough to just throw in a thesis and some examples on paper and expect what you write to be an essay. You need to dead poets, be organized, and when you have to organize an essay under pressure, the generic five paragraph essay format is your friend . Just as with every five-paragraph essay you've written at school, your SAT essay should have an introduction, 2-3 body paragraphs (one paragraph for each argumentative technique you discuss), and a conclusion . Thesis On A? Your thesis statement (which techniques you'll be analyzing in the essay) should go in both your introduction and your conclusion, with slightly different wording. And even if you're just discussing multiple examples of the same technique being used in the passage, you’ll still probably need two body paragraphs for organizational purposes. So how do you write an dead society, SAT essays in this five paragraph format? I've created an macbeth summary, SAT essay template that you can use as a guide to structure your own SAT essays, based on the following prompt: Write an essay in dead thesis, which you explain how Eric Klinenberg builds an summary essays, argument to persuade his audience that Americans need to greatly reduce their reliance on dead poets air-conditioning. In your essay, analyze how Klinenberg uses one or more of the features listed in essays websites, the box above (or features of dead poets society thesis, your own choice) to strengthen the logic and persuasiveness of his argument. Be sure that your analysis focuses on the most relevant features of the passage. Your essay should not explain whether you agree with Klinenberg’s claims, but rather explain how Klinenberg builds an argument to persuade his audience.
You can read the full text of the passage associated with the thesis on a suns prompt (part of Practice Test 5) via our complete collection of official SAT essay prompts. In the following SAT essay format, I've broken down an SAT essay into dead society thesis introduction, example paragraphs, and conclusion . Since I'm writing in response to a specific prompt, some of the information and facts in the template will only be useful for answering this specific prompt (although you should feel free to look for and write about the argumentative techniques I discuss in any of your essays). When responding to essays faithfullness, any SAT question, however, you can and should use the dead society thesis same format and structure for your own essays. To help you out, I've bolded structural words an d phrases in the below template. Begin with a statement that explains the central claim of the passage's argument; this statement should provide some context for what you’ll be discussing in the essay. It can be brief if you’re short on thesis on a thousand suns time (1-2 sentences): In his commentary, Eric Klinenberg conveys a strong stance against society thesis the rampant and short-sighted utilization of air conditioning (AC) nationwide.
He believes AC is a massive unnecessary energy drain, and he implores the english essays websites reader to poets society thesis, reconsider the implications of constant cool comfort. Next comes the thesis on a all-important thesis statement that includes a clear outlining of what aspects of the author's argument you'll be discussing . You can be very specific (e.g. statistics about air-conditioning usage in poets society thesis, the US) or more vague (e.g. Essays? quantitative data) here - the important part is that you'll be supporting your opinion with proof (1-2 sentences). To buttress his argument, Klinenberg deftly employs quantitative data, acknowledgment of counterarguments, and thesis, vivid language. In his commentary, Eric Klinenberg conveys a strong stance against macbeth essays the rampant and short-sighted utilization of air conditioning (AC) nationwide. He believes AC is dead society thesis a massive unnecessary energy drain, and he implores the reader to essays of gods, reconsider the implications of dead thesis, constant cool comfort. To buttress his argument, Klinenberg deftly employs quantitative data, acknowledgment of counterarguments, and thesis splendid suns, vivid language.
Introduce your first example with some kind of transition (1 sentence). In his introductory paragraph, the author points to AC usage statistics to illustrate the grave magnitude of our hedonistic climate control. In this case, the writer linked this body paragraph to the introduction by explaining how his example (AC usage statistics) relates to society, one of the rain research information persuasive techniques he'll be discussing (statistics): it is an example of the harm created by overuse of air-conditioning. Next, provide relevant information about when and how in the passage the author uses this persuasive technique (4-7 sentences). Dead Thesis? Be sure to paraphrase or directly quote the passage for the strongest evidence. He shares that “Americans use twice as much energy…as we did 20 years ago, and more than the rest of the world’s nations combined.” These staggering statements immediately give the reader pause, forcing an internal dialogue about their significant.
Clearly, in research papers, the past 20 years, the American population has come nowhere close to dead, doubling - and yet, AC energy use has doubled. This can only summary, mean utilization per person has skyrocketed. Furthermore , the American population can comprise no more than 10% of the world’s population (400 million to the world’s 6 billion) - and yet we use more AC energy than the rest of the world. This leads to another profound inference - each American may use almost 10 times more AC energy as the average non-American. These conclusions are grave and thought-provoking. Finally, explain how this example works to strengthen the author's argument (3-4 sentences). By introducing incontrovertible data, Klinenberg empowers the reader to reason though her own arguments and formulate her own conclusions. The rhetorical consequence is that the reader independently and poets society thesis, actively agrees with Klinenberg’s thesis, rather than being a passive unengaged audience member. By the virtue of rain, her own logic, the reader is compelled to agree with Klinenberg. Sample SAT essay body paragraph (1)
In his introductory paragraph , the author points to AC usage statistics to illustrate the grave magnitude of our hedonistic climate control. By the virtue of her own logic, the society reader is compelled to agree with Klinenberg. Transition from the previous paragraph into essays this example (1 sentence).
Quickly after this data-driven introduction , Klinenberg effectively addresses potential counterarguments to his thesis. Provide at least one specific example of poets thesis, how the author uses the persuasive technique you're discussing in thesis thousand splendid, this paragraph (2-5 sentences). He acknowledges that there are clear valid situations for AC use - to protect the “lives of dead society, old, sick, and frail people,” “farm workers who work in sunbaked fields,” and “workers who might otherwise wilt in searing temperatures.” By justifying several legitimate uses of air conditioning, the author heads off his most reflexive critics. Explain how and why this example persuades the reader of the essays author's opinion. (3-4 sentences). An incoming reader who has just absorbed Klinenberg’s thesis would naturally have objections - if left unaddressed, these objections would have left a continuous mental roar, obscuring the absorption of further arguments. Instead , Klinenberg quells the most common objection with a swift riposte, stressing that he is not a maniacal anti-AC militant, intent on poets society thesis dismantling the AC-industrial complex. Essays? With this addressed, the reader can continue further, satisfied that Klinenberg is likely to be somewhat well-reasoned and objective. Ultimately, this facilitates acceptance of his central thesis . Sample SAT essay body paragraph (2) Quickly after this data-driven introduction , Klinenberg effectively addresses potential counterarguments to his thesis.

Ultimately, this facilitates acceptance of thesis thousand suns, his central thesis. This paragraph is in dead poets, the same format as Example 2. You should only include a third example if you think it’s strong and will help (rather than detract from) your point. In the information case of the essay we've been using as the dead society thesis backbone of this template, the author had the time to write a third example. Here it is, broken down in jena economic papers, the same way as the previous example, starting with a transition from the previous paragraph (1 sentence): When he returns to his rebuke of wanton AC use, Klinenberg employs forceful vivid language to dead poets, magnify his message . Provide at least one specific example of how the rain research information author uses the persuasive technique you're discussing in this paragraph (2-5 sentences). He emphasizes the blind excess of air conditioner use, comparing cooled homes to “igloos” circulating “arctic air.” Then, to thesis, underscore the unforeseen consequences of acid research, such behavior, he slides to the other extreme of the temperature spectrum, conjuring the image of “burning through fossil fuels in suicidal fashion.” This visual imagery shakes the reader from complacency.
Most likely, the reader has been the poets thesis beneficiary of brockovich, AC use. “So, what’s the big deal?” By comparing malls to igloos and society thesis, excessive energy use to suicide, Klinenberg magnifies the english websites severity of the poets society thesis problem. Explain how and why this example persuades the english essays websites reader of the author's opinion. (3-4 sentences). We are forced to consider our comfortable abode as a frigid arctic dwelling, prompting the natural question of whether we really do need our hones cold enough to see our breath indoors. The natural conclusion, in turn, is that we do not. By employing effective visual imagery, Klinenberg takes the reader through another internal dialogue, resulting in stronger acceptance of his message . Reiterate your thesis, using different words (1-2 sentences). Overall, the passage effectively weaves quantitative data, acknowledgment of counterarguments, and vivid language to poets society thesis, rebuke the rain excesses of air conditioning.
The reader leaves with the strong conclusion that perhaps a bit of moderation can do the world some good. You may also choose to mention the dead poets thesis examples you used if you have time and if it adds anything (1-2 sentences). In this case, the author of the essay chose not to. Overall, the passage effectively weaves quantitative data, acknowledgment of counterarguments, and vivid language to rebuke the excesses of air conditioning. Essays Faithfullness? The reader leaves with the strong conclusion that perhaps a bit of moderation can do the world some good. Here's what the final SAT essay template looks like (key structural words and phrases bolded): This essay contains some inferences about what the reader may experience (e.g. Dead? that the reader is shaken from of gods faithfullness, complacency by the image of suicidally burning through fossil fuels).
It also has some minor grammatical and spelling errors. Since there is no way to survey the mind of dead poets society thesis, every reader and see how the majority of them react to the author's arguments, however, graders will go along with any reasonable inferences about how a reader would react to essays, the author's argument. As far as grammatical, spelling, punctuation, or sentence structure issues, the dead poets society rule is even simpler: if the error doesn't make your essay too difficult to read and understand, the people who score your essay will ignore these errors. The essay graders will not fault you for factual inaccuracies or minor grammar/punctuation/spelling errors. To summarize, your SAT essay should stick to the following format: Introduction (with your thesis) - 2-5 sentences Start with a statement about acid, what the dead society thesis author of the english essays websites passage is arguing. Poets? Thesis with a clear statement about papers, what argumentative techniques you'll be examining in the essay.

Factors Affecting Reaction Rate Essay. In reference to the collision theory, molecules act as small spheres that collide and bounce off each other, transferring energy among themselves when the collide. In order for a reaction to occur, there must be collisions between molecules. Through experimentation, factors are discovered that influence the reaction rates of chemical reactions include the concentration of dead poets thesis reactants, temperature, surface area, the physical state of reactants, and a catalyst. This experiment regarding the factors that affect reaction rate tests the macbeth effects of increased concentration and temperature of the hydrochloric acid solution (HCl) and also the effect of increased surface area of magnesium metal (Mg). When glow sticks are immersed in a hot water bath, it is proven that they glow with greater intensity.
This proves that an increased temperature has an effect on the reaction itself, allowing molecules that make up the liquid inside the dead poets thesis glow stick to move with greater speed, resulting in more collisions. The balanced equation for essays faithfullness, this reaction would be: Mg (s) + 2 HCl (aq) = MgCl2 (aq) + H2 (g) Purpose: The objective of this laboratory experiment is to observe and record the effect of reactant concentration, reactant surface area and reactant temperature on the overall rate of society reaction. Hypothesis: During this experiment, acids of different concentration are utilized, and the different reaction rates calculated. On Erin. When the reactant’s concentration increases, there are more atoms per space for a collision to occur. A prediction for the effect of concentration on reaction rate would be that the higher the concentration of the reaction, the faster the reaction time.
As the temperature of the reaction rate increases, the molecules will move faster, also resulting in more collisions and perhaps a faster reaction rate. Lastly, in dead poets society a reaction, increasing the surface area of the solid reactant increases the number of collisions per second. The more collisions there are, the more energy is produced, and also could contribute to a faster rate of reaction. Essays Brockovich. Procedure(s): Please refer to Heath Chemistry Laboratory Experiment 18 A pg.
192-196 In Part III: Effect of Temperature on Reaction Rate, only three beakers were utilized in the experiment, Beaker A containing hot water, Beaker B containing water at dead poets society thesis room temperature, and research, Beaker C containing iced water. Poets. The fourth beaker was not utilized due to the limited time allotted for this experiment. In this experiment, a stopwatch was not used to record time. Instead, an Apple iPhone was used to suns calculating the time it took for dead poets society thesis, the reactions to occur completely. The device was capable of calculating time to the hundredth decimal point and an uncertainty of ±0.01 was provided. Safety Notes: Hydrochloric acid is highly corrosive to skin, eyes and clothing. When handling it, make sure to wear safety goggles, lab aprons, plastic gloves and use a full-face shield. Wash and spills or splashes immediately with plenty of rain information water and inform the supervising teacher. Reagent Disposal- Return any unused magnesium metal to the designated container.
Any hydrochloric solutions left in poets society the test tubes should be returned to another designated container for neutralization before being discarded down the suns sink. Data and dead poets society, Observations: Part I- Effect of thesis thousand suns Concentration on Reaction Rate. Mass of 11 cm strip of Mg: 0.18 g ± 0.01. Qualitative Observations- Before immersion in hydrochloric acid, the magnesium strips were a dull grey colour, coated in a sort of white substance. Sandpaper was used to english essays remove impurities from the magnesium strips, resulting in society thesis a grey strip, with a bit of summary metallic lustre. The strip of magnesium received was extremely malleable and was easily cut into 1 cm strips and dead poets, folded into a tiny ball. Essays On Erin Brockovich. During the immersion of the magnesium metal in the hydrochloric acid solution, white bubbles could be seen escaping the surface of the metal as gas was produced during the reaction. Depending on the temperature of the hydrochloric acid and the overall molar concentration, the rate of reaction differed but the same signs were shown.
During the reaction between the magnesium metal and higher concentrations of hydrochloric acid, it was observed that the test tube grew quite warm to society the touch. As the immersed magnesium strip sank down, it appeared coated in a layer of white bubbles that fizzed like a carbonated drink. In the lower concentrations of hydrochloric acid, the strip spent some time floating at on a thousand splendid suns the surface of the solution in the test tube, later sinking down to the bottom as the bubbles died down. According to the balanced equation, the white bubbles that rose to poets society the surface are hydrogen gas (H2 (g)) bubbles produced as one of the thousand splendid products in poets the reaction. During the reaction, as the magnesium reacted with the hydrochloric acid solution, there was a strong metallic scent that came from the of gods faithfullness open system, especially in when the magnesium strip was dissolved in the strongest concentration of hydrochloric acid. After the dead poets thesis reaction, no trace of the magnesium metal remained in acid rain information the test tube.
The test tube was filled with a completely clear aqueous solution. Questions and Calculations: 1.See attached graph #1: Reaction Rate vs. Concentration of HCl (aq) and graph #2: Reaction Rate vs. Temperature Data. 2. a) Please refer to thesis Reaction Rate vs. Concentration of HCl (aq).
As the concentration increases, the rate of reaction increases as well, due to the higher number of molecules colliding with each other. b) As the english essays websites surface area of the surface area increases, the reaction rate also speeds up. This happens because there is a greater surface area available for reaction. Dead Poets Thesis. c) Please refer to Reaction Rate vs. Temperature Data. As the temperature increases, the rate of research reaction increases. This is due to the increased kinetic energy, allowing the molecules to collide more often and with more energy.
3. Please refer to Reaction Rate vs. Dead Poets Thesis. Concentration of HCl (aq). As shown on the graph, as the concentration doubles, the reaction rate also doubles approximately (due to sources of essays error). Although this seems to be the poets society thesis case in this experiment, it doesn’t necessarily mean that this statement is true for essays faithfullness, all reactions. The orders of reactions and equations that calculate the poets society rate have to also be taken into consideration. 4. In Part II, the jena research papers small slivers of poets society magnesium produced the fastest reaction. Thousand Splendid Suns. This is due to in increase in surface area, by cutting the one-centimeter strip into tiny slivers, allowed more surface area to be exposed to dead the hydrochloric acids, allowing for a quicker reaction rate. 5. English. Please refer to Reaction Rate vs. Temperature Data.
When the test tube containing the hydrochloric acid solution was immersed in the ice water bath, it produced the slowest reaction rate and time. This is a result of the slowing of molecules due to decrease in temperature. As the kinetic energy and movement of the molecules decrease, the poets society reaction rate also decreases due to the reduced number of essays of gods collisions between molecules. 6. a) Please refer to Reaction Rate vs. Concentration of HCl (aq). For a 1 cm strip of magnesium metal to react with 4.0 M hydrochloric acid, the reaction time would be 21 seconds, calculated to two significant figures. Poets Thesis. b) Please refer to Reaction Rate vs. Temperature Data. For a 1 cm strip of magnesium metal to react with 1.0 M hydrochloric acid at 15 °C, the reaction time would be 190 seconds, calculated to two significant figures. 7. Please refer to Reaction Rate vs. Temperature.
Doubling the temperature does increase the reaction rate, due to faster moving particles, but it doesn’t necessarily double the reaction rate. The increase in kinetic energy provides many more collisions between molecules, but the energy coming from the macbeth molecular collisions does not exactly double. Dead. Follow-Up Questions: 1. It is on a splendid, possible to vary the factors of concentration, surface area and temperature in poets a way to prevent a reaction from research information happening. As the concentration of a solution decreases in molarity, there are fewer atoms per space for the collision to occur. Poets Society. By lowering the temperature drastically, it slows down the movement of jena economic particles so that the collisions are few in number and release less energy when molecules bump against each other. It is the same with surface area, as the density becomes greater and the sides exposed to the chemical reaction decrease, it lowers to rate of reaction significantly. In order to prevent a reaction from happening at all, the temperature should be extremely cold, the concentration as low as possible and the density of the reactant (ex. magnesium metal) as dense as possible, perhaps a large brick. This is only a hypothesis though, and as studied in reaction kinetics, every reaction requires a minimum amount of energy in order to react.
By not achieving that bare minimum of activation energy required, a reaction will not occur. 2. The definition of a catalyst would be a substance that speeds up a reaction, but remains chemically unchanged at the end of the reaction. After adding a catalyst to dead the reaction between the on erin brockovich solid magnesium metal and aqueous solution of dead society hydrochloric acid, the reaction rate would increase, due to macbeth essays the provision of an alternative route for the reaction with lower activation energy. This does not lower the overall activation energy, but simply provides a different route for the reaction to happen where the molecules collide more often. 3. Kindling wood has more surface area and dead thesis, has a lower density, making it easier for the fire to acid burn due to the increased area of exposure to oxygen (O2). The mass of kindling is also lower than a log, allowing it to heat up quickly to the temperature needed for dead thesis, a combustion reaction to occur. A log is very dense and has a larger mass, therefore taking a longer time to heat it up to the point where a combustion reaction would occur. 4. When a person blows on a smoldering fire, the level of oxygen is increased. Oxygen is a key component in a combustion reaction, is it needed as a fuel in order for the reaction to occur. This will increase the temperature, which speeds up the kinetic energy of the molecules molecules, allowing for essays, more collision energy and a faster rate of reaction. Conclusion and Error Analysis:
In conclusion, it was discovered that an increase in concentration, surface area and temperature all contributed to a faster rate of reaction, developing a conclusion that all of these are factors that affect the poets rate of reaction. As predicted in thousand splendid the hypothesis, the application of the collision theory was a key factor in the increasing the reaction rate as the concentration of HCl (0.50-6.0 M HCl), surface area of Mg (slivers, rolled, and flat) and poets society, temperature of HCl (5 °C- 57 °C) was increased. The highest concentration of summary essays HCl (6.0 M) produced the faster reaction rate of 0.0012 g Mg/s. When the magnesium metal was cut into tiny slivers, this also produced a faster reaction rate of 0.0015 g Mg/s. As hydrochloric acid solution was warmed in a hot water bath to a temperature of 57 °C, it produced a reaction rate of 0.00022 g Mg/s. This experiment was not perfect, and there were many sources of poets thesis error during the essays websites process of completing this laboratory experiment. The magnesium metal utilized was coated in a dull, white coating, due to the exposure of magnesium to the oxygen in the environment, producing magnesium oxide (MgO). Sandpaper was utilized to dead poets thesis try and remove most of the magnesium oxide coating, this also contributed to the sources of error because the sandpaper was not new and had contamination from the summary substances it had been used on before. Test tubes were used in the experiment, but through careful observation, some of the test tubes had not been properly cleaned, and contained minimal residue inside from previous experiments, perhaps contaminating the hydrochloric acid solution. As the magnesium metal was cut into slivers, particles of the magnesium might have been stuck to the blades of the scissors or the napkin the slivers were put on, lowering the mass and creating another error for the experiment.
There was confusion during the solution preparation stage about the labelling on the jars of dead thesis hydrochloric acid solution, and essays of gods faithfullness, a new solution had to be prepared by the supervising teacher. An Apple iPhone was used to collect the reaction time, and the measurement recording was restricted due to the number of decimal places the dead poets society iPhone could time to, and uncertainties had to be provided alongside the measurement data collected. Thesis Thousand Suns. There was also a source of error for the time the dead poets magnesium metal was dropped into the acid solution, as starting the time as soon as the magnesium entered the acid was very difficult. Hebden Chemistry 12: Workbook for Students, Unit 1: Reaction Kinetics, pg. 1-36 Heath Chemistry Laboratory Experiments, Experiment 18 A: Factors Affecting Reaction Rate, pages. 192-196 Factors Affecting Reaction Rates http://chemwiki.ucdavis.edu/Physical_Chemistry/Kinetics/Factors_That_Affect_Reaction_Rates This website was used on October 3, 2014 to jena economic help develop a better understanding of collision theory in order to explain the various factors affecting the rate of reaction.
