Essay about Short Story -- Papers

Title IX Research Paper Essay Sample. In 1972 Congress passed the Educational Amendments. One section of this law, Title IX prohibits discrimination against essay about story girls and women in federally funded education, including in athletic programs. Since its arrival, in sujet de dissertation, regards to athletics, there have been arguments for essay about a short, and against the many aspects pertaining to this law. Title IX has had a large impact on high school and college athletics in the attempt to give females an english for muet, equal opportunity, but the means by which they are achieving this goal is an a short, ongoing debate. The basic Title IX statute provides: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from resume smaples participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance (DeHass 2002).” Two years later the “Tower Amendment” was proposed. This was introduced by senator Tower and was an amendment that would allow revenue-producing sports to be exempt from being calculated into Title IX Compliance. This amendment was eventually rejected.

There was other attempts made at altering Title IX coverage when it came to about a short athletics but they all died before reaching the House or Senate floors. In 1975 the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare had drafted the regulations for Title IX, including one section, which dealt with athletics. It requires institutions to “effectively accommodate the de dissertation, interests and abilities of members of both sexes(Cooper 2003).” This required drastic changes. Athletic facilities and support services for men and women now had to be provided on an equal basis. No longer could you focus all your marketing on male sports while ignoring the female sports. The same went for the facilities requiring that all locker rooms and playing fields be equal in about story, quality. Since the acceptance of Title IX the essay contest for inn, entire scope of high school and college athletics has changed dramatically. According to story the National Federation of State High School Associations, in 1971 there was approximately 3.7 million boys participating in high school sports but only resume smaples, 294,000 girls. In 2002, 3,960,517 boys participated but girls’ participation had grown to a short story 2,806,998(Cooper 2003).

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) also showed a dramatic jump in women’s participation. In 1971-72 there were 29,977female participants and that number jumped up to 150,916 by the 2000-01 academic year (Cooper 2003). This is a huge jump in numbers and there are not many that complain about this at all. Contest? Most people are very excited to essay a short see that women sports are expanding and allowing for more opportunities. Why Marijuana Remain? The complaints come from about a short those who feel that in order to comply with Title IX many universities are cutting programs and essay contest for inn setting a cap on some men’s programs.

Even though some universities choose to cut programs it does not mean that it is the only way to essay about comply with Title IX. In its 1979 Policy Interpretation, the Department established a three-prong test for compliance with Title IX , which it later amplified and clarified in its 1996 clarification. The test provides that an institution is in et decorum essay, compliance if 1) the essay about story, intercollegiate-level participation opportunities for essay for inn, male and a short story female students at doc policing the institution are “substantially proportionate” to their respective full-time undergraduate enrollments, 2) the institution has a “history and continuing practice of program expansion” for the underrepresented sex, or 3) the institution is “fully and effectively” accommodating the interests and abilities of the underrepresented sex (Reynolds 2003). The Departments Office for Civil Rights (OCR) encourages schools to essay a short look at corrige the three-prong test and essay about a short consider which of the doc policing, tests best suits their institution. This allows each institution to have a range of flexibility in a short story, complying with Title IX. Although it seems that many schools felt the need to go along with the substantial proportionality prong and felt it was the only way to comply.

This is what has led to the cutting of many men’s programs in order to get the numbers to be equal to that of the student body. In fact, OCR is attempting to make it clear that each of the resume smaples, three prongs of the test is an equally sufficient means of complying with Title IX, and essay about no one prong is favored (Reynolds July 11, 2003). The three-prong test also makes it clear that it is not Title IX that is forcing the cut backs in men’s sports but those put in a place of summary, decision making at each institution who chose how it is that they want to comply with Title IX’s three-prong test. In some cases a schools decision to cut sports in order to essay about a short story comply with Title IX has lead to a lawsuit. An example of this would be Miami University. The university formed a committee to address the issue of Title IX compliance and hired a consultant as well. “The committee and essay consultant determined that in order to comply with Title IX, the university had the option of eliminating a few sports for men. As a result, the about a short, university eliminated the men’s soccer, wrestling and tennis teams, effective at the end of the 1999 spring semester (Challenge 2002).” On November 18, 1999, the plaintiffs filed a complaint against the defendants, claming that the defendants’ elimination of the men’s wrestling, tennis and soccer programs at Miami University, a state university of the State of Ohio and a recipient of summary essay, federal funds, constituted gender discrimination in violation of the essay a short, 20 U.S.C. Dulce? et seq. And violated their rights to equal protection under the Fourteenth Amendment (United 2002).

The court found that the plaintiffs failed to state either an a short story, equal protection claim or a claim under Title IX (United 2002). The key to the university’s victory was that it eliminated the men’s teams in order to comply with Title IX’s requirement that schools that receive federal financial assistance provide equal athletic opportunities for women and men. Why Marijuana Remain? In a statement about the case Judge Batchelder said, “It is anomalous…to accomplish equality of essay about a short, opportunity by decreasing rather than increasing opportunities, but in the real world of essay, finite resources,” she added, “this approach may be the only way for an educational institution to comply with Title IX while still maintaining the other niceties of its mission, such as its academic offerings (Appellate 2003).” The students in this case felt that the University’s decision to eliminate their teams, but not corresponding women’s teams, violated their rights under the essay a short story, equal protection clause and english essay for muet Title IX but since the university took action in essay about a short, order to sujet corrige de dissertation comply with Title IX their case did not hold up. This was not the only case against Title IX. Essay About Story? In 2002 some groups got together lead by the National Wrestling Coaches Association and alleged in their January complaint that Title IX discriminates against men. Doc Policing Summary Essay? Pointing specifically to a 1996 “clarification” to the 1972 gender equity law, which they assert encourages colleges and universities to shutter men’s sports programs rather than add women’s programs in order to comply with Title IX (Wrestling 2002). The plaintiffs in this case sought a unique type of remedy. They asked that the U.S. Department of Education write new Title IX regulations that focus on providing opportunities for women based on a short story the number of women “interested” in competing in resume smaples, intercollegiate athletics, rather than the current standard, which is based on the “participation” of essay story, male and female student-athletes (Wrestling 2002).

Just as before the case was dismissed. The debate on weather interest surveys should be considered when dealing with Title IX compliance is one that has been going on doc policing essay since its introduction in 1972. The Secretary of Education’s Commission on Opportunity in Athletics took a look at this topic in depth. One of their many recommendations included the following: “The Office for Civil Rights should study the possibility of allowing institutions to demonstrate that they are in compliance with the third part of the three-part test by comparing the ration of male/female athletic participation at the institution with the demonstrated interests and abilities shown by essay about a short story regional, state or national youth or high school participation rates or national governing bodies, or by the interest levels indicated in surveys of prospective or enrolled students at that institution (Cooper 2003).” This was just one of many recommendations by the commission. Many people feel that these recommendations would further complicate the compliance issues because they would allow universities greater latitude in demonstrating that they are complying with the 1972 law. In a statement after reading the resume smaples, commissions recommendations Myles Brand, the new leader of the NCAAA, said, “as well-intentioned as the commissioners were, the recommendations simply provide too much opportunity for mischief in the implementation of Title IX (Commission’s 2003).” The athletic director for women at the University of Texas, Christine Plonsky had agreed with Brand. “The commission had a difficult task, given the time frame,” Plonsky said. “It was a comfort to read that Secretary Paige will not consider non-unanimous recommendations. I also agree with Dr. About A Short Story? Brand, however, that any alteration of the et decorum essay, law would negatively impact equity in opportunities and would be harmful (Commission’s 2003).” The commission also acknowledged the problem of essay about, schools attempting to comply with Title IX by the elimination of men’s teams. The Department of Education released a statement that included they will view the elimination of men’s teams as a “disfavored practice” for achieving Title IX compliance (Reynolds July 22, 2003). Overall the effects of Title IX have been very positive in equalizing the playing field for both men and women.

The debates about Title IX will certainly continue but the Department of Education has noticed some flaws in essay contest for inn, the way that certain institutions choose to comply with Title IX. Hopefully they will somehow figure out a way to ensure the about story, safety of men’s sports while at the same time allowing women’s sports to continue growing as they have been since the introduction of Title IX. David Lynch, a name that is for many film enthusiasts the why marijuana should remain essay, epitome for weird, surreal, and bizarre, surprised many people when he had characterised himself as a Boy Scout from Missoula, Montana. He is essay a short story also known as “Jimmy Stewart from essay, Mars,” or “Jimmy Stewart on acid”—a very polite, happy-go-lucky, enthusiastic individual, who unironically uses words and phrases like “Golly!,” “Holy jumping George!,” “Howdy!” etc., and who just happens to have a vivid imagination that has been the about a short story, basis of nightmares for many of his viewers. Contrary to popular belief, Lynch is not the type of a guy who, for instance, chops off his fingernails in resume smaples, his grandmother’s basement and then puts them in his dinner salad, but is somebody who is essay about a short actually trying, through foundations, meditation recommendations and charity work, to promote, and achieve without a hint of irony, peace and should remain, prosperity. But Lynch’s worlds are full of such contradictions, full of idealists who also happen to be scoundrels below the surface, and Lynch is fascinated with the dark and perverse facet of the human condition, but also on the profound and gentle side of humanity, a soulful aspect of his work that doesn’t get nearly mentioned as the former one. The oblique and mysterious nature of Lynch’s work draws many to become obsessed with finding a universal explanation or an enlightened meaning to his films. But Lynch insists on never revealing what the about story, abstractions in his films “mean,” and he suggests to his viewers that they also try to find out for themselves more on an intuitive than a rational level as to what the disturbing visuals, the labyrinthian plots and the unreliable characters truly convey. Lynch claims that everybody is a detective, but it is also important to note that Lynch’s movies are not merely a puzzle to why marijuana should illegal essay, be solved: they are to be experienced, after which a powerful cinema-going epiphany may come out of his best work. This set of essays will try and derive certain interpretations and explanations of Lynch’s ideas, but they are in no way to be understood as definitive or let alone indicative of what the director himself was thinking. Every reader should be an autonomous detective indeed. After an 11-year break from filmmaking, Lynch returns for, as he puts it, an 18-hour feature divided into 18 parts, called Twin Peaks , which sounds familiar to pretty much anyone remotely acquainted with the man’s work.

Lynch’s cult television show that originally aired in 1990 and 1991 and revolutionized television storytelling returns, against all odds, for a special event series starring Kyle MacLachlan as Agent Dale Cooper. Very little is known about the essay, plot or the resume smaples, characters, apart from the fact that it is essay a short story indeed happening again, 25 years after the murder of Laura Palmer, the teenage homecoming queen whose death has set the plot of the old Twin Peaks into motion. A 200+ cast list has been released, including newcomers such as Naomi Watts, Laura Dern, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tim Roth and Tom Sizemore. This mammoth project for resume smaples, a 71-year-old Lynch will, therefore, serve as a jumping point for Cinephilia Beyond to go to a short story, the past and explore his ten feature films, starting from the debut film Eraserhead in essay contest, 1977, all the way to Inland Empire in 2006. His short film, web, commercial and television work will not be included, with the clear and notable exception of Twin Peaks itself, which is an essential component for this retrospective. The nightmarish journey into the world of essay about David Lynch begins with his arguably most inaccessible and puzzling work, the epitome of the term “midnight movie,” launching the career of a talented director with his own unique style and sense of the unknown, who has made it possible to put terms such as “avant-garde” or “surrealism” more fiercely into the public sphere of cinema and, with some of et decorum his later works such as Twin Peaks , even into the mainstream. Eraserhead was a passion project and a labor of hardship, where Lynch had put his heart and soul into its development for five years, running out of money and a short, temporarily halting the production on various occasions, changing the key role of the cinematographer during filming and going simultaneously through his first divorce during this period. It is therefore a miracle that Eraserhead was indeed made, that it became such a cult classic and for muet, that it looks the way it looks, taking into essay about story consideration its troubled production and a low budget, with its stunning black-and-white industrial, dystopian, noisy landscape, where something threatening always lurks just behind the screen and whose stifling, claustrophobic atmosphere permeates through every frame of the film. Corrige De Dissertation. This would never be accomplished in such a striking manner if not for the unique sound design by Lynch and about a short, his close sound collaborator Alan Splet, which has since become the primary indicator of a Lynchian world—the “room tone,” as Lynch refers to it—a continuous, humming, industrial sound that heightens up the feel of english a malevolent presence hidden in plain sight, somewhere in the air, or behind the walls, or simply in essay a short story, the twisted minds of Lynch’s unreliable protagonists.

Lynchian visual motifs that will be repeated throughout his career also have their genesis in Eraserhead : electricity buzzing, old gramophone players, fish models, zig-zag floors (making an appearance in one of Lynch’s most iconic set pieces, the Red Room of Twin Peaks ). This external sense of essay for muet dread and uneasiness reflects itself internally in about a short story, the main character of Henry Spencer, memorably played by summary essay, Jack Nance, who is nervously and wearily observing the unsettling world around him, trying to comprehend its gray and macabre features and at the same avoid its trappings and tribulations. Henry is in many ways a classic Kafkaesque character; he observes the world around him with a combination of reluctant amusement and baffling paranoia—there is a sense that the world is closing in on about story him, although there is never any hint of a reason as to why this feeling continues to linger. Lynch is an admitted fan of illegal essay Kafka, ‘The Metamorphosis’ in particular (for which he had actually written a script adaptation), although ‘The Trial’ might be the one whose influence could be recognized all over Eraserhead . Kafka and Lynch also share their sense of perverse humour that comes in the oddest and most awkward of moments; David Foster Wallace, the great American novelist, author of the mammoth ‘Infinite Jest,’ one of the greatest novels of the late 20th century and an enthusiast for about, both of these artists, has described the dulce, word “Lynchian” as describing a sense of something unbelievably grotesque mixed with the unbelievably banal. There are plenty of such moments in Eraserhead , where the randomness and banality of certain absurd events one has to laugh with (instead of at, which is what some Lynch critics pretend to do; Lynch, in fact, is a big fan of humor and very actively introduces it in even the darkest of his stories), combined with the grotesque and the morbid, representing a cinematic experience that refuses to essay about a short, take itself all too seriously apart from those moments where it decisively shocks and horrifies the viewer. In the case of Lynch’s first feature, the atmosphere of Eraserhead does not have the luxury of the false solace of a comfortable picket-fence neighborhood of Blue Velvet or Twin Peaks . Sujet De Dissertation. Instead, the darkness persists, putting its suffocating mantle all around Henry, who seeks to essay, find comfort in doc policing, his small but serene one-room apartment, where a significant portion of the film takes place. This sense of comfort soon changes when Henry finds out essay a short he has spawned a creature that can be only referred to as a “baby” with a certain amount of caution. Henry’s offspring is repulsive, miserable, cruel and at times oddly hilarious, its internal organs are held and meshed by a body-covering bandage and it seems it cannot be quiet at any point in time, ruining any sense of balance or inner peace Henry might have had in the past. A lot has been theorized and discussed regarding Eraserhead . Resume Smaples. Lynch has called it his most spiritual film, and his interpretation of the film, which came after it was already done and after Lynch was frustrated with the fact that he made his debut based on a set of ideas he didn’t fully understand, comes from story, a Bible verse he refuses to et decorum essay, divulge to about a short, his fans.

Lynch always says his movies are to be experienced and not understood in the traditional sense of that word; their meaning should come to the viewer from english essay for muet, their subconscious; to use a cliched phrase—they’re meant to essay about, be felt and not analyzed. But there is an emotional undercurrent to english for muet, most of Lynch’s films and story, Eraserhead , although cruder and more unapologetically deranged than some of his later work, has a certain human aspect to it that comes into the forefront, in largeness due to Jack Nance’s vulnerable, anxiety-ridden performance. Lynch has stated that Eraserhead is corrige not autobiographical and that Henry is not an extension of his persona, but that he understands him and about a short story, relates to him. One of the sujet de dissertation, more common theories as to what the a short story, meaning of Eraserhead is, and what it really is about, is the absolute fear of english fatherhood, mundane family life and, in essay, general, responsibility. Lynch had indeed had certain fears about doc policing essay, all sorts of impediments to his creativity and essay story, having a family at a young age certainly could have been a challenge in the achievement of his artistic goals. The bizarre scene at doc policing the family house of his girlfriend pretty much plays out all of the most horrible and surreal scenarios that any future groom might dream of when coming into the allegedly welcoming arms of future in-laws, including sexual innuendo, hysterical episodes and bizarrely awkward interactions. This is also the section which has the most dialogue in the film; Lynch has described dialogue as a sound effect, and the staccato, slowed down dialogue adding to the atmosphere and mood instead of trying to essay about a short story, realistically depict human interaction will spill over to his entire body of work. Henry has different archetypes that come to him in summary, an attempt to essay about a short, break him away from the resume smaples, horrible baby which has proven to be the cage to his ability to a short story, function in an already oppressive environment.

The “beautiful lady across the hall,” as she is credited in resume smaples, the film, may represent lust and excess, while “the lady in the radiator” could symbolize a more tranquil form of essay about a short story escapism, although this particular benevolent form might be slightly more devious, summoning Henry to for inn, her “Heaven” in the form of essay story a notoriously catchy lullaby, “In Heaven (Everything is Fine),” that was covered, among others, by successful alternative bands such as Bauhaus and Pixies. Remain Illegal. This is one of many examples of Lynch’s work where song performances lead to darker and deeper levels of Lynchian universe—Dean Stockwell’s demented take on Roy Orbison’s “In Dreams” in Blue Velvet , or Jimmy Scott’s “Under the Sycamore Trees,” which welcomes Kyle MacLachlan’s character in the Black Lodge in Twin Peaks , are other infamous examples which will be examined in their respective articles. The Lady in the Radiator welcomes Henry to what could be a brand new life, or an afterlife, while crushing weird spermatozoa-like creatures which got Henry into trouble in the first place (creating this wicked infant, whose creation may or may not be depicted in the movie’s cryptic, creepy prologue), clearing and erasing his head of all the nasty, external factors that have contaminated his originally peaceful and soothing room, but also making him numb and subservient. Eraserhead may focus on about story the unpleasant aspects of a marriage and an unwanted child, but it does ask at what price escape and artificial freedom indeed come. The success of Eraserhead came gradually: it was shown in cinemas on sujet corrige a midnight movie circuit for a very long time and thus acquired its cult status over the years, getting some unexpected fans such as Stanley Kubrick, who has described Eraserhead as his favourite film, which was a huge honour and about story, acknowledgement to Lynch who considers Kubrick to be one of his favourite filmmakers. Kubrick wanted to convey the atmosphere of dread and paranoia in Eraserhead and apply its mood to The Shining , making the crew watch Lynch’s nightmarish vision before they started work on the movie. The influence of essay Eraserhead is immeasurable, its originality is immune to essay, the poor man’s luxury of impersonations and why marijuana remain, its audacity opened doors for Lynch to essay about story, bring his art to english essay, wider audiences.
